Don't Dream.
Author: Raine    Date: 01/21/2008 13:46:14

Let us for today, remember all the work that Martin Luther King did. It was so much more than this speech. He worked to end poverty, to improve labor conditions to end the war. When he was murdered in 1968, he was in Memphis, supporting labour. He was calling for a radical redistribution of wealth in this country. he told the striking sanitation workers '"All labor has dignity, but you're doing another thing. You are reminding not only Memphis, but the nation that it is a crime for people to live in this rich nation and receive starvation wages."

Mr. King had been talking about injustice for a long time. From his Lettter from a Birmingham Jail, April 16, 1963:
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial "outside agitator" idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds.

HE spoke out against the war... From Riverside Church in NYC, he said
"As I have walked among the desperate, rejected and angry young men I have told them that Molotov cocktails and rifles would not solve their problems. I have tried to offer them my deepest compassion while maintaining my conviction that social change comes most meaningfully through nonviolent action.

But they asked, and rightly so, what about Vietnam? They asked if our own nation wasn't using massive doses of violence to solve its problems, to bring about the changes it wanted. Their questions hit home, and I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today, my own government. For the sake of those boys, for the sake of this government, for the sake of the hundreds of thousands trembling under our violence, I cannot be silent."

His house had been firebombed, he had been wiretapped, he constantly recieved death threats to him and his family, he had been thrown in jail, threatened by our government, labeled as a dangerouss radical element to our nation's security, he still carried on his work.

And the night before he was killed, right after another bomb threat, after his flight was delayed, he gave to the world these hallowed words...
Well, I don't know what will happen now.
We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now.
Because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind.
Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place.
But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will.
And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over.
And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you.
But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land.
And I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything.
I'm not fearing any man.
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.

So Today, let us not just remember his dream, let us honour and carry on the work he did for all Americans. We must recognize that this man was more than just his I have a dream speech. It is time that we go beyond his dream and start doing. Don't just dream, but rather just do. We have so far to go.

:peace: and

I was at a congressional district Democratic Convention yesterday and, if the guy who spoke for John Edwards is any indication, I think I know why Edwards is having so many problems.

The speakers for Hillary, Kucinich and Obama were dynamic and engaging. The Edwards guy read from a sheet of paper and just sort of talked. I was wearing an Edwards button and literally felt sorry for the guy.

True they have. But I think he needs to look outside the borders of this country and see the worlds history. Great civilations of the world have been built by slave labour and not just in the "fertile crescent" region also in South & Latin America.

Wanna hear something funny? After that particular movie came out, a friend and I were talking and she started giving me the plot from start to finish. I hadn't seen it yet and started telling her "You realize I haven't' seen this movie? And she would acknowledge "Yeah, and then __________ happened." And she finished giving me the full story all through to the surprise ending.

Basically, she wasn't connecting that I wanted her to stop telling me the complete plot. I wasn't sure if I wanted to see it because I'm no Bruce Willis fan and Haley Joel creeps me out. But still.......

WIlliam Castle movies are notorious for this kinda stuff. He used to have people sign waivers that it was okay to see his movie. Or have medical staff on hand "in case you needed them". and with the movie The Tinger, he even wired some seats to make it feel like you were being attacked in the theatre and paid people to jump up and interact yelling stuff like "Run! THere it is!"

I believe that's the last of the video recycling for now.

Yay! Computer and at least half of the tapes are all out of my life now.

If I'd only known about the recycling centers last summer, I'd be willing to bet the pile would *all* have been gone by now.

Now all I have to do is transfer the stuff I still have to DVD and/or sell the tapes that are left.

Phew!

These aren't pre-recorded tapes. They're personally recorded TV shows from the eighties, nineties and 2000s. What I'm finding fascinating is the space - some of the stuff I transferred to DVD fits on a disk spindle, but on tape they're in a monster-sized box or bag.

Most of the tapes are older and generally only of interest to people who are trying to find TV shows that haven't yet or possibly never will show up on DVD.

And most of the tapes I'm able to sell rather cheaply - about $1.50 apiece.

Looking for some clarification here. article 6 :

All Debts contracted and Engagements entered into, before the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be as valid against the United States under this Constitution, as under the Confederation.

This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.

The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

I'd give you two caveats....you didn't say where your friend was that was interested in buying one, and both would be relevant to Florida.

The air conditioning is weak. Mrs. TriSec's 14-year-old Escort still pumps out more cold air on a hot day.

Subees are rare in the south...we had tire trouble on the way to Disney, and wound up paying through the nose at the ol' Disney Care Care Center because "it's an unusual size tire" and were hard to come by down there, or so the man said.

But otherwise...solid ride, great transmission (5-speed, anyway) and not too thirsty.

BASically what I just heard from barck, is that women should vote for hillary, blacks for barack and white men for Edwards...

I was not happy with what I just heard from barack.

You know what? I despise this insider talk between barack hillary and the caucus.

I wish they were still standing. John need to speak up again NOW.

Mike Malloy was ripping into Obama's Reagan comment. He felt that it was a pro-Reagan statement and then reminded us of the legacy of Ronzo's foreign policy. He is worried that either of these two will stick us with a Republican in the White House again.

Back to the mines tomorrow. There's a big meeting about AthenaMaine, but I have a schedule conflict...I think I'm going to miss it.

Still trying to get Mrs. TriSec to give me a green light. We're up to yellow, though.

Tri, how much do you think the market will drop tomorrow?

So when is there going to be Athena Florida???

Comment by TriSec on 01/22/2008 03:08:58
Well, given how much the global market has sunk, and I saw over at UNN that the leading Canadian indicator was off 600 today...

I really can't say. When do the automatic trading restrictions kick in? (instituted post-1987 crash, if you recall.)

I'd say we hit the trigger, wherever that is. Could be ugly.

You do not want to see Candy Crowley in HD. Way too much makeup.

Ah, but there is already. Sort of.

PSS buys a stake in AtheanaHealth

JACKSONVILLE, FL – A company that focuses on supplying doctors with medical products and inventory management systems is looking to help them pay their bills, too.

PSS World Medical of Jacksonville, Fla. announced on July 2 that it has made a $22.5 million equity investment, approximately 5 percent of current outstanding shares, in athenahealth, Inc., a Watertown, Mass.-based provider of revenue cycle management, practice management and EMR solutions.

In addition, PSS’ Physician Sales & Service branch will be marketing athenahealth’s Web-based solutions to the physician market.

According to David Smith, PSS World Medical’s CEO, small-practice physicians who aren’t affiliated with hospitals – he estimates there are between 200,000 and 300,000 in the country – have seen their incomes drop 10 percent over the past five or six years due to insurance reimbursement problems and rising administrative costs associated with billing. And studies have indicated that 35 percent of medical charges submitted by doctors to insurance companies for reimbursement are denied.

‘That’s the work you do for free,” he says. And for small-practice physicians who are “outgunned and outmanned and out-dollared by the insurance companies, that’s too much.”
