Four Freedoms DC MEETUP!
Author: Raine    Date: 02/12/2008 19:55:40

http://www.fourfreedomsblog.com/images/meetupboard.jpg

We're having a Four Freedoms meet up in Washington DC on the Weekend of April 26, 2008!

Some of us will be arriving on friday evening, but if anyone wants to come for an overnighter that is fine as well!

All members of Four Freedoms are invited as well as our progressivive friends around the internets. We will be staying at the Holiday Inn Rosslyn at Key Bridge. Many have found that it may be cheaper to book a room at one of the many travel sites out there, rather than directly thru the link provided.

The 4F Blog members and Staff hope you wil join us for a weekend of discussing politics, ending this war, getting some culture, visiting history and of course, cocktails...

So, if you would like to be a part of the meet-up, tell us here!

This blog is also the place to discuss all that we want to do for the weekend, including the possibility of carpooling if anyone needs or wants, sharing a room, travel information, and directions as the weekend nears, and other logistics as they arise.

We hope to see you in DC!
:peace: and
Four Freedoms

UPDATE: The photobucket location for the photos is: http://s203.photobucket.com/albums/aa213/FourFreedoms/Meetup08/

I've emailed the login and password to everyone that attended...

LOL!

I'll be there! Taking that Friday off too!

Comment by livingonli on 02/12/2008 21:42:22
I'm going to try and head down Friday and I will coordinate with HBK if she needs a ride (at least back if she can't come down Friday).

I wonder if we can get a group rate at the hotel if enough of us are coming?

Sounds like you have a homework assignment. :P

btw - I have a Priority Club acct number (which is the Holiday Inn version of a frequent flyer card), so if we CAN get some sort of group discount, maybe that will help as well.

FWIW - I saw a rate of $105/night at the Holiday Inn website, which is actually cheaper than the rates I saw at Orbitz, Expedia, and Travelocity...

EDIT: If we can associate my number for each room (for those coming that don't have a number already), I believe it can get us a free continental breakfast.

Comment by livingonli on 02/12/2008 23:09:26
I also saw the $105/night on AAA when I was checking. So, I might get a deal with my AAA membership.

Comment by livingonli on 02/12/2008 23:18:46
I saw $105 also when I looked on the hotel web site.

Comment by livingonli on 02/12/2008 23:23:19
With AAA, I can get the room for $85/night if I were to stay until Monday.

Comment by TriSec on 02/13/2008 00:03:05
Well, *snort*.

Now I'm wondering if we couldn't sneak down for the overnight. It's only 400 miles from here...we'd have to get on the road at insane o'clock Sat am to make it worth our time, though...

Comment by livingonli on 02/13/2008 01:22:50
Really rough for you because it tales me about 6 hours. I guess it would be another four. Too bad the trains are so expensive, it might be easier to use Amtrak.

Does anyone want to share a room? I got a glimmer of what my heating bill might wind up being for this non-insulated apartment with a thermostat that doesn't let me see what the inside temp is.....

Comment by livingonli on 02/13/2008 17:43:36
We'll have to find out who wants to bunk up to save money? I know Mala and HBK roomed together last time.

I'm a snorer and a slob so no one will want to room with me.

Just a thought - do you think we should see if there's a local branch of Drinking Liberally to see if any of the members would like to connect with us while we're around?

Since we won't be there early enough to talk with our senators or reps, it'd be nice to hook up with active progressives in the area.

Comment by wickedpam on 02/19/2008 14:46:13
I'm sure there are a ton of active groups in the area - it is DC after all.

That's cool with me, so let me know if HBK is coming. If she isn't I can always share with someone else - not a prob.

I am sure we can get some room sharing happening. I know MAla is going, and so is VJ. Not sure about HBK, but that iss also a possibility.

I believe also Starling, Mondo, and Grumpy. TriSec is thinking about it, but it's a l-o-n-g drive.

Another friend of mine here in Atlanta may be coming as well

For Tri, it would be a long drive especially if he only comes down for overnight. It would only be worth it if he could get down on Friday.

I would say 6-8 depending on how many are sharing a room.

Comment by shelaghc on 02/22/2008 18:30:20
Here's a thought:

Does the hotel have any suite-like rooms with three or more sleeping spots?

The ideer being that with as many of us as there are, it'd be way cool to have a larger room for all of us to hang out and do stuff in.

If there are three or four of us willing to all bunk in one of the suites and share the expense of that, the rest of us could toss in $10 or $20 apiece to defray any additional costs.

Thots?

Comment by livingonli on 02/23/2008 20:08:58
I just took the liberty of calling the Holiday Inn and we can get a discount rate, if we are using at least 7 rooms. So, I guess if someone can set aside those rooms (probably one with a priority card) and then we can each claim our room since we will be paying separately. So, breaking it down we are looking at;

BobR and Raine (1)

Me (Liv) (2)

Mala (3)

VJ (and Mrs. VJ?) (4)

Grump (and Mrs. Grump?) (5)

If Star and Mondo are taking their own rooms and presuming that ShelaghC and HBK will be bunking, we should be able to secure the seven rooms. And throw in one more if the TriSec Family is able to join us.

When I first tried through the national number, he gave me $20 a night per room. The National number reservation number wasn't helpful (I think I reached India) so i called the front desk of the hotel and went through their reservations. The only thing was the rates were higher than the ones on the website. So, I guess the only thing now is to see if you priority card can get a group deal and knock the price off the rooms while we still book our reservations separately so that we pay our own ways. Currently on the web site, the best rates are $114-119 per room if ordered individually. We should look into this soon because the rates went up from when we were first looking at the rates. I guess the other option would be if we could get a deal from priceline through negotiation (which will be my next plan).

One more time - Is that:

$20/night

-or-

$20 OFF / night

I only ask because $20/night is ludicrously low, and doesn't sound right.

If it's $20 OFF / night, then $20 off of what?... in other words - what was the actual price after the $20 discount?

I guess it's too many shortcuts. The rate I got on the phone was $139 per night (without discount or membership), so it would be knocked down to $119 per night which is what is on the website. On the Holiday Inn website, the best rates were $115/night for a room with two double beds and $120/night for a single king.

Okay I heard from HBK, she and I are sharing but if we wanted to get a suite to sleep 3 (something like a suite with 2 double beds and a pullout) would be fine with us. Let me give the hotel a call and see what I can find out.

Comment by wickedpam on 02/25/2008 15:09:13
Okay they don't have any pull out sofas so that could make things difficult - and I don't know if anyone is willing to share a bed.

There are suites and regular rooms - we were thinking that if the suites had a pull out sofa we could get three people in there.

In the mean time, May I suggest that everyone click on the link that says *4F - Contact the Staff* and send your phone numbers? I want to get them programmed in, as well as give y'all mine. Please put *4F meetup* in the subject line of the email. I have a few of you, but I just want to make sure I have everyone.

I would like to have them at the ready so when we get closer to the day, I can call people. PLUS, I would like to be able to give y'all my number.

And I want you to have BobR's as well...

I'm going to need to know ASAP if I have a roommate or not.

If someone is willing to room with me, could you let me know now? I realize I'm the newcomer in the group and everyone really would rather room with their friends, but I can't plan for this trip if I'm not sure I can even afford to go.

I honestly cannot afford to stay in this room alone and just being told "I'm sure you'll find a roommate" isn't the same as actually having one.

I recommend booking the room, just in case. You can always cancel later if you need to.

I guess I'm going to have to bag this.

It's no fun begging for a roommate when everyone else is happily planning.

This looks to be quite a party.

Hey there Liv,

I may take you up on your offer to share your room. Last night I booked my flight (only cost me $47.00 more than the credit that they gave me for the Columbus trip I didn't make). I arrive on Friday - early afternoon - and fly out around 10:00am Sunday morning. I am really looking forward to meeting you and the rest of the 4Fs gang - can't wait...

Cheers,

mfaye

Yeah!

Are you coming into National or Dulles? If Dulles let me know what time and I could probably pick you up and we'll still hit Arlington before rush hour. If National you could take the blue line train(metro) from National (they call it Regan National) to the Rosslyn Metro and the hotels only a block away we can come meet you at the station.

File under "day late, dollar short".

We are probably headed to DC this year...just not at the same time as you.

Unfortunately, my bonus and tax return went to clearing the slate and paying down a ton of bills in anticipation of a clean break while Maine was still alive. So we can't come down for the April shindig. But, with the president's money coming in May, maybe we can afford a vacation this year after all.

So....we'll be down sometime in August. Wicked Pam is local, yes? Maybe we can see you, at least.

I'm still expecting a phone call on the Saturday night so we can have a long-distance toast.

:martini:

Oh, and Livin....Javi was recently diagnosed with a mild chocolate allergy...so we took Hershey/Lancaster off the table. That would be kind of mean. But you're still welcome in Boston anytime. How about here for the next major gathering?

We have one, but the only pump we have for it plugs into a car lighter. Not that that's a huge problem, but it would be a minor inconvenience. We should be able to bring it, so long as Mondo's PT Cruiser has enough space in the trunk for that along with 4 people's baggage and drinking supplies...

Yeah, I talked Delta into letting me use my old ticket that I didn't use for Columbus and only had to shell out $47.00 extra for a RT to BWI (Baltimore) - there is a shuttle that runs from BWI to DC regularly that isn't too expensive. I'll be arriving around 1pm on Friday, leaving about 9am on Sunday. I'll probably stay with a friend on Friday night, but am looking forward to hanging with you all on Saturday. Can't wait With whom am sharing a room? BTB - I snore too, although those breathe right strips help :)

Is there any chance anyone is coming with a laptop that can create DVDs? I have nearly all of season one of the Sarah Jane adventures from the BBC on my laptop (along with the episode of Dr. Who from last year where she guest starred) and would love to transfer them to disk(s) so I can watch them via my DVD player.

I only have a CD burner on my laptop thus far. Obviously the disks can be shared at that point.

As long as it's still showing there, the locations are 555 11th Street NW,

Washington, DC 20004 (E Street Theatre - fifteen minutes away) and 7235 Woodmont Avenue, Bethesda, MD 20814-2951 (Bethesda Row Theatre - about 25 minutes away).

I just got off the phone with someone there - they said they should know for sure either today or tomorrow.

I google-mapped them both - the Bethesda Row theatre is only seven miles away, not too bad really. I think the long drive is more because there's no expressway between the hotel and the theatre.

OTOH, the DC theatre is only three miles away. Hopefully both have parking?

FYI - I just checked and WitWiObL will indeed be at the E Street Theatre this weekend.

Two shows, 7:05 and 9:35 -both PM.

I'll be working until something like 11:00 or 12:00 on Friday so I can't count on being at the hotel before 4:00 or 5:00PM now. :(

But at least I'll have a paycheck next week, eh?

So do we want do have dinner then see the 9:35 movie or see the 7:05 movie then have a late snack?

Or is someone coming on Saturday instead who'd like to go as well? In which case we have the same questions for Saturday instead of Friday?

Comment by livingonli on 04/22/2008 16:08:34

Hey guys! That's really sweet to want to wait for me, but please feel free to plan whatever the majority wants. I will jump into the Agenda/Itinerary where and when I can. I will most likely get to DC around Noon on Saturday.

For what it's worth, I would like as much "talk" time as I can get with you all.

So, if I miss the film that is alright.

But, I will leave it up to the majority, as I am the only one who can't be there until Saturday.

You would have to take the E train at the same station. If you're going from Grand Central you would take the S to Times Square and then the 8th Ave. line (A,C,E) to 34th St.

Mala, here are the DC Train Pick-ups

Which one is easiest from the Hotel?

Dag! If I take the 10:30 train, I won't get to DC until AT LEAST 2:30.

That's barely any time with you guys.

If you want to maximize your time with us, that rental car might be a better idea. Too bad you couldn't meet us on Friday.

Yeah, I know. Just trying to not spend too much money.

The F train takes you to 34th and 6th Avenue. Then you walk 2 blocks over to 8th avenue. Otherwise, the S trin tkes you to 42nd street and I think Port Authority, then you would have to either tranfer a thrid time on the E train or walk 8 blocks south.

It is just a way to save a tranfer and/or walking.

Actually if you get off the bus by the McPherson Metro stop take the Orange line to the Rosslyn stop. That would be the Orange line to Vienna.

Comment by starling310 on 04/23/2008 19:23:49
Alright...thanks for all of your input! I am going to figure out what works best on my end....

Either way, I will see all of you on Saturday!

Comment by wickedpam on 04/23/2008 19:25:17

Red line goes to Chinatown and that area. She wants Orange line it's like 3 stops away.

You DO know, you should call me when you can get the chance. This subway thing is a lot easier than it is starting to appear.

Once we know what the closest MEtro station is in Dc we can easily get you there.

But call dahling!

Or if you get hit the Farragut West station use the Orange line to Vienna also - get off at Rosslyn.

If you get on at Farragut North take the Red line to Glenmont but get out at Metro Center. Find one of the people in the info box (near the tickets) and have them show you how to get do to the Orange line platform and take Orange line to Vienna off at Rosslyn.

Either way just find the Orange line to Vienna and out at Rosslyn.

We'll find you

You are not going to GCS at all.. The F is north of it. I am trying to get you to avoid having to make a zillion transfers.

Comment by livingonli on 04/23/2008 19:52:08
Actually if you go to GCS. You only take two trains to go to 34th. But you're only going one stop on each. S from GCS to Times Square. A,C,E from 42nd st. to 34th st.

Another question - probably won't get an answer in time, since I'm packing now.

What is anyone wearing to this little shindig?

I'm packing a couple of subversive t-shirts, a pair of jeans and some comfortable pants.

Anyone?

Buehler?

Nothing like starting out the weekend with a bang.

I spent ten minutes this morning searching my apartment for my tollway transponder. You see, I thought it would be prudent to remove it from my own car last night so I would have it all ready for the trip today.

Mind you, I didn't transfer it *directly* to the rental car. That would have been too easy.

I couldn't find it before I left for work.

Then, on the way to work I realized I didn't have my cell phone car charger. I'm a real stickler for having that thing when I'm traveling in case something goes wrong with the car and the cell phone isn't charged up. I realized at some point that I'd grabbed both the transponder *and* the charger at the same time. So wherever one is, so is the other.

Now I'll have to check through my suitcases before I head out and, if they're not there, I'll either have to just leave without them or stop at home for one last look. So on top of being later to work than I wanted to be (and will have to leave later from work to make up for the time(, now I'll have another delay.

*This* is why I don't like to have to work on travelling days......

Velveeta, I'm so sad you can't make it. Next time. (or maybe I'll make a side trip to your area when I'm in Raleigh this Sept for son#1 wedding...).

Hi Tri. We all got in around 6:30 and after checking-in and having dinner and I making a raintini supplies room. We are all now curled up with raintinis and chat.

Here's to you, Tri. :martini:

Hey everyone!

We're in the room drinking and talking... we've got Raine and I, Mala, Livin, Shelagh, HBK, Al from WV, and my friend Stan (Mondo left before dinner to visit relatives).

We're drinking beer and Raintinis after having dinner at the hotel restaurant (yes, I know - boring, but we were in a hurry).

Looking forward to Starling and Faye (and Mondo) joining us tomorrow....

:)

OK, I'm 5 minutes from the apartment, leeching wifi to tell you guys I made it just fine. Great to meet you all, and no, Stan and I were not considering bodily damage to each other (chuckle), we are both just passionate about how we see things.

To all of the readers of the blog. Making it to one of these things is invaluable, even if the rest of the people there are people you never agree with on the board. All the typed interchange in the world will not substitute for hearing a person's voice and seeing their body language.

Good to meet you all, again. Take care. Bob, you done good, on both counts.

actually, half the "politics" discussion last night with Stan was religion, anyway. He did have an interesting look on his face when I said I hold a fundamental theology (personally) and that attempting to use the Bible in the place of the law of the land was not only unconstitutional, but unbiblical as well. Great guy to talk to, actually.

I'm a little embarrassed. Pretty much every picture I took with people in it came out out of focus or basically crappy.

The ones that *did* come out were all of things. And I never did get a picture of God's Gas......

Uploading what I've got anyway in case anyone wants to see 'em.
