Sick and Tired
Author: BobR    Date: 07/08/2011 12:34:40

As noted in yesterday's excellent blog by Raine, the immediate and far-reaching outrage over a headline in the newspaper is premature, and likely misplaced. Once again, the purveyors of anger on the left against The Left have sewn mistrust against the best president we've had in our lifetimes.

It would be one thing if my fellow liberals and progressives looked at them as the loons that they are. Have they ever written anything in support of the president? We know that some members of the "Professional Left" are making money from the professional right, but we've covered that one before. What irks me no end are the smart, informed people that should know better that start blasting their emotional shotguns in all directions every time one of these writers spews out yet another angry screed magnifying some tiny (or imagined) misdeed by President Obama.

Once the bile is foaming, there's no talking to these people. If you ask them to wait until all the facts are out, you're called naive or stupid. If you point out that the headline in question is misleading and the facts speak otherwise, you're told that the headline - not the facts - falls in line with all of his previous "transgressions".

And - ultimately - if you are proven correct, and point out that they got riled up over nothing, they will sullenly admit only that Obama did the right thing THIS time, but it he should have also done A, B, and C, and that doesn't negate all the previous misdeeds, and they are not going to be so easily won over, and warily state that they have their eye on him, and remember when he did THIS horrible thing??.... blah, blah, blah...

I have two words for you people:

FUCK OFF

I am sick and tired of your constant negativity. I am worn out by your addiction to outrage. I am way past your knee-jerk opposition carrying over from the previous administration. If you think President Obama is no better than Bush (or the same as), then you are a complete idiot. If you think President Obama has not accomplished anything worthwhile while in office, then you have blinders on, and you REALLY need to get over the fact that Hillary Clinton did not win the presidency (much less Dennis Kucinich).

I've written on more than one occassion about all of the accomplishments of his presidency. There's also the matter of what he can't accomplish as president. Sometimes, it requires Congress to take action. No "Public Option" in the health care bill? Blame the blue dogs in the Senate (and don't forget that what IS in that Act required using the budget reconciliation maneuver). DOMA? That's going to require the Congress or the Supreme Court to change (which brings up another important point as to why President Obama needs to be re-elected).

Now that he has to deal with a Republican-led House, the ability to get ANYTHING done is nearly impossible. All of you assholes that constantly denegrate everything the president does (and the firebagger "journalists") are to blame for that, for not voting and for inspiring others on the left to not vote. Ed Schultz once again proclaimed he will not vote for Obama in 2012 because of this perceived attack on Social Security. Ed is not very bright. Ed can fuck off too.

Our only hope against the goose-stepping well-(financially)-oiled Republican machine is a certain amount of solidarity on our side. Does the country really have to go into the shitter before you will grudgingly support a Democrat that isn't a progressive wet-dream? Really?...

If that's the case - our demise rests on your shoulders. I hope you're happy... not.

Morning, Comrades!

Well, let me put away my "Ambivalent on Obama" t-shirt here....

No, no...I know he's done all he can. The blame lays at the feet of Congress and their obstructionism. Curiously enough, my differently-winged friends agree with me that the Senate is where bills go to die. Of course, they are mostly thankful for it, while we rail against it. How quickly they forget; the same thing happened under the Bush regime. I doubt that will change anytime soon.

The true nature of all the histrionics is the media and the messaging; we all know that the liberal media is a myth, but somehow the rest of the US still believes it. Like a certain German said long ago, keep repeating a lie and eventually people will believe it to be the truth.

I'm curious to see if they use or sell it and to whom

Negativity can get to be a habit with some, and old habits can be hard to break. As far as the media pundits, I refuse to let any of them control what I think or how I react. There's far too many that make obscene amounts of money shooting off their mouths, and the only way they can keep getting those obscene amounts of money is to be controversial. But it is a contrived controversy, only for the sake of ratings and the almighty dollar.

As far as Obama, I live in Illinois, heard him speak in person many times when he ran for the Senate, and followed his record while in the Senate. Why people ever thought he was a flaming progressive, I'll never know. Much of what he said has been what he has tried to do as President, stepping up the war in Afghanistan as an example. But until you hear this man speak in person, you really don't know the charisma he has. He can really grab your attention, he's got the ability to reach out to people in a group as if he's talking to you individually. That some were caught up in that charisma is to be expected, and when that happens what Obama actually said was lost in the beauty of how he said it.

I know that Bob posted it in his blog, but it worth a repost again, especially wrt to what you mention as the paid punditry.

Mercenary Ideologists
In particular:
The bottom line is that the "Professional Left" does not make money by being happy clappy Kum Ba Ya liberals. They make money by dashing off angry screeds that end up raising similar emotions in their readers. Their targets are whoever is in power, regardless of ideology. There may be some purists out there, but from what I've seen, they're mostly mercenaries.

It is an amazing song, and the fact that they pretty much timed it to the real time events of a liftoff makes me love Rush even more.

I hadn't listened to "Countdown" in a while; think I'll go get a new copy (off to the iTunes store)

Here:
"Frankly, I had been pushing NASA to revamp its vision," the president said. "We're still using the same models for space travel that we used for the Apollo program 30, 40 years ago. Now what we need is that next technological breakthrough."

NASA is currently preparing for the 135th and final mission of its 30-year shuttle program, scheduled for Friday.

Even while praising the recent accomplishments of NASA, Mr. Obama contended that it was time for the program to push for new technological achievements.

"Rather than keep on doing the same thing, let's invest in basic research around new technologies that can get us places faster, [and] allow human space flight to last longer," he said. "What you're seeing now is NASA, I think, redefining its mission."

The ultimate goal, he said, was to "get to Mars."

"A good pit-stop is an asteroid," he added, before noting that "we haven't identified an actual asteroid yet."
Here is from a direct transcript:

Q So a slight deviation from the economy -- we have a lot of questions, and this will be our last before we start reading some responses to your question -- about the space program. And this one from Ron: "Now that the space shuttle is gone, where does America stand in space exploration?"

THE PRESIDENT: We are still a leader in space exploration. But, frankly, I have been pushing NASA to revamp its vision. The shuttle did some extraordinary work in low-orbit experiments, the International Space Station, moving cargo. It was an extraordinary accomplishment and we’re very proud of the work that it did. But now what we need is that next technological breakthrough.

We’re still using the same models for space travel that we used with the Apollo program 30, 40 years ago. And so what we’ve said is, rather than keep on doing the same thing, let’s invest in basic research around new technologies that can get us places faster, allow human space flight to last longer.

And what you’re seeing now is NASA I think redefining its mission. And we’ve set a goal to let’s ultimately get to Mars. A good pit stop is an asteroid. I haven’t actually -- we haven’t identified the actual asteroid yet, in case people are wondering. (Laughter.) But the point is, let’s start stretching the boundaries so we’re not doing the same thing over and over again, but rather let’s start thinking about what’s the next horizon, what’s the next frontier out there.

But in order to do that, we’re actually going to need some technological breakthroughs that we don’t have yet. And what we can do is for some of this low-orbit stuff, some of the more routine space travel -- obviously no space travel is routine, but it could become more routine over time -- let’s allow the private sector to get in so that they can, for example, send these low-Earth orbit vehicles into space and we may be able to achieve a point in time where those of you who are just dying to go into space, you can buy a ticket, and a private carrier can potentially take you up there, while the government focuses on the big breakthroughs that require much larger investments and involve much greater risk.
Hope that helps, Scoop.

I saw on Rachel Maddow that if there was a problem with this shuttle post-launch, the Russians would be the ones to get us off the space station. However, they can only bring back one per launch, so it might take a while.

Did I just hear Thom suggest the Pres be primaried cause Barney didn't want to give an answer to that question?

Jeez people, really?

Hey, look over there, curled up in the gutter!

It's a drunk!

It's an addict!

It's the TriSec!

Speaking of addiction.. I've relapsed.

After eight years, I've started collecting/playing Magic The Gathering again. Gonna be playing in a pre-release tournament for the new base card set this weekend too.

So http://www.uspirg.org/ just showed up. they talked me into donating -- not as much as they wanted, but I offered them use the lavoratory -- they took advantage -- does that make my meager donation work out?

Damnit, I love seeing young people out there working for a good cause.

Barney Frank, he was asked by a caller if he thought the pres was leaning right because he wasn't being primaried (I'm paraphrasing) and Barney didn't really answer the question. Thom took his answer to mean that a primary might be a good idea

Hi, Bloggers!!

I hope that everyone is doing well today.

Forrest, good to see you here.

I am busy with a few things, but doing well.

TriSec, if you can contact me on Facebook. I have a few questions on teaching in Massachusetts, where a friend says there is a demand for teachers with masters degree. (Ask Raine for my name.)

The shovel ready jobs were stopped when the stimulus ended.

I wish Randi would remind the caller of that.

Because we haven't posted the cliche recently:

An awful lot of music out there ages badly. Mr. Henley has done a rare thing...this is quite possibly even more relevant and accurate today then when he recorded it, 29 years ago. (what? that can't be right!)

From the article:

I have rounded up (or possibly invented) the reactions of all the 2012 Republican contenders to the news of Casey Anthony's "not guilty" verdict.

It's NOT true.

and I am dismally disappointed by Salon right now. Some media outlets should stay out of satire.

oy.

No one can primary Obama. No one.

Once again the so called third parties have failed to organize -- even the tea baggers are more than willing to be included into the GOP. That was a potential thrid party that even Thom touted -- on principle, I will admit that -- but it failed.

The tea party is nothing more than a massive shocking ideological shift of the GOP. that is all the Koch brothers and Dick Armey ever wanted.

Thanks Clint.

I missed that the first time reading it. I went onto check those alleged quotes. I got nothing.

Salon should stay out of the business of Satire -- unless they mean that Glenn Green
wald is satire too....

Can someone weigh in on this? Pam Spaulding says this is a friday night news dump. I'm more inclided to this this is actually the status quo, and the good news is that the fight can go forward in court, instead of languishing as it has for many years. I mean seriously-- did anyone ever really thing the DEA would say anything else?

I thought the feds have long said Pot had no accepted medical use, have I missed something? how is this a news dump, and if it is, why is it bad?
