Is this McCain's blowjob?
Author: Raine    Date: 02/21/2008 13:42:27

By now you have all heard the big news. Did he or didn't he? Does it matter?
We have eaten bigger scandals than this for lunch. But this really is not about us, it is about John McCain, the Republicans, Ethics, and Hypocrisy. And even more important: why was this story published now?

McCain does have a history with ethics, there is no doubt about that. He was a member of the Keating Five, and received a large sum of money in donations from Charles Keating himself. That was back in 1989.

Now we see that he did it again. The NYT article reports
...a partner at the firm Alcalde & Fay, represented telecommunications companies for whom Mr. McCain’s commerce committee was pivotal. Her clients contributed tens of thousands of dollars to his campaigns.
This happened before the McCain-Feingold Act was passed in 2002 and after the savings and loan scandal of the eighties.

That is important because he still takes money from Lobbyists. He accepted money From Jack Abramoff's former lobbying firm - over $100,000. It may be legal, but it certainly doesn't look ethical. It isn't in the spirit of the law that HE helped write and it is downright sleazy that this is the same firm that had good old Jackamoff.

And - it is something that Americans are tired of. We are tired of Republican corruption. Sadly, the media will not focus on this money stuff. They will focus on the titillation of a possible affair.

What I do find peculiar, and fair to ask, is WHY all of a sudden did Cindy McCain start showing up wherever John McCain went? Why the sudden attacks on Michelle Obama from Cindy? I think we have the answer now. The American Spectator reported last month that the NYT had this story, and that McCain threatened to sue if they went with it. I can only assume that the Times got a few more facts straight. We have yet to hear a denial from Mr. McCain himself. He has chosen to attack the messenger and wave his hero status as a deflector shield.

Something is going on. I don't think that this is your run-of-the-mill attack story. Despite it's foibles, I do respect the NYT. As an affair itself, it really doesn't have the Za Za Zooie. It happened 8 years ago. If aides were concerned about McCain and this woman, I believe them. This is where the question of good moral judgement does come in. It is the kind of thing that makes the social conservatives go nuts. It's the kind of thing that get presidents impeached. [see: Bill Clinton affair;] It is the kind of thing that prevents a nomination. [See: Gary Hart affair;]

Personally the in me is wondering what will happen next. The man does not look healthy these past few weeks. I have seen him on more than one occasion getting helped up on stage. I wonder if he is healthy enough to finish this campaign? This stress certainly won't help him. Will he bow out of the race? Who then - if this happens - will be the Republican nominee? Those are a lot of if's I know, but they matter. We have been barraged this past week with who can beat McCain in the General election... Hillary can't, Obama can, and back and forth. This affects us as well.

It is no secret that the republicans despise this man as their candidate. Heck, they seemed to despise all of their candidates. But the reality is this: they called themselves the party of morality, the party of family values, the party of fiscal responsibility. John McCain seems to have failed on all these fronts. In the end, the republicans have put themselves up on this pedestal, and now it is time for their party to make a decision about what they stand for. If John McCain's closest aides could not trust him to do the right thing, why should we trust him with the Constitution?

Put the sex aside for a minute and understand that we have a real problem here. Actually, thank the goddess' for the sex in the story, because the media will finally pay attention to the scandal. It looks like we have our own version of the blowjob.

See you inside.
:peace: and
Raine

Mornin' Raine,

Here's my take on the scandal last night (I was just pissed that it bumped Momma off the TeeVee )

The McCain brouhaha is a tempest in a teapot as far as I can tell - he's denied any shenanigans and so has she, so it's the word of a few disgruntled old campaign workers. I'm still waiting for the cancelled check or something else that links Johnny to crookdom (I'm not doubting that it's there, I just wish the NYTimes would pony up... let's see the goods). So will the Iseman cometh? (Sorry folks, I couldn't resist)

But your thoughtful post has me rethinking my colossal shrug at this development, and it has me worried - if McCain can't hang in there (I do believe that Old Man McCain is beatable, by Obama, at least), who will the rethugs turn to? Gingrich? Jebbie? I'll read the Spectator piece and get back to you all. Thanks for fleshing out this scandal du jour - you guys as always rock my world :)

Cheers,

mfaye

I've had a different take on this so-called scandal.

Someone wants McCain out and Huckleberry in. They want the left to jump all over this and turn it into our blue dress.

Whether it's someone *on* the left or someone deep in the right is the question.

After all, Huckleberry would be way easier for *either* Dem candidate to beat when you get down to it.

Good morning, bloggers!!!

The real issue is the possibility of an improper business relationship - far more damaging to our country than a sexual affair. I am curious if the NYT has more.

The UNN Daily Headlines are taking shape - there is more on the McCain story.

That thoery has been bandy-ing about my head as well.

What I did truthfully scpecualte is the fact that Hillary has not had polls where she could beat MCCain. Thus my allusion to it in the blog post about it DOES affect our campaign as well.

Viggo's T-shirts are *always* made in America and, from what I can tell, he's not making a profit on them. My cost for two was $16.00 plus $4.85 for priority postage.

The site also shows some in pink, possibly for the Code Pink ladies?

From Wikipedia;

The Smurfs (originally Les Schtroumpfs in French) are a fictional group of small sky blue creatures who live somewhere in the woods. The Belgian cartoonist Peyo introduced Smurfs to the world in a series of comic strips, making their first appearance in the Belgian comics magazine Le Journal de Spirou on October 23, 1958. English-speakers perhaps know them best through the 1980s animated television series from Hanna-Barbera Productions, The Smurfs.

The LA times held back on this story for even longer than the NYT

So I was down in DC this past weekend and happened to run into a well-connected media person, who told me flatly, unequivocally that “everyone knows” The LA Times was sitting on a story, all wrapped up and ready to go about what is a potentially devastating sexual scandal involving a leading Presidential candidate. “Everyone knows” meaning everyone in the DC mainstream media political reporting world. “Sitting on it” because the paper couldn’t decide the complex ethics of whether and when to run it. The way I heard it they’d had it for a while but don’t know what to do. The person who told me )not an LAT person) knows I write and didn’t say “don’t write about this”.

This is a serious problem with ALL of our news outlets. Sex or not the ethics questions abound all over the place. The rest of this blog is an excellent read addressing this issue.

For me, it is about McCain's decision making. If he can't remember, is it becuase it did not happen or can he REALLY not remember?

No wonder why I have to go to Democracy Now!, alternative press sites, and international news outlets like BBC World to find out what's going on because the media we have is not reporting the real news.

I think it's now up to 65% with Obama's recent victory. The more primaries Obama wins, the higher Hillary's percentage needs to be to clinch the nomination in the remaining primaries. And if she loses Ohio or Texas, that goal will beocme much harder to reach.

Comment by Raine on 02/21/2008 16:10:42
From Will in Chicago, Passing on information from Sensi:
By the way, for those who might be interested in how things work in Texas:

How the Texas Primary/Caucus Hybrid Works.

How the texas Primary/Caucus works:

Texas will send a total of 228 delegates to the Democratic National Convention. 126 delegates will be assigned based on primary results in 31 State Senate Districts (instead of allocating delegates by its 32 Congressional Districts like many states). The number of delegates in each Senate district varies based on previous Democratic turnout in the last two general elections. The delegates from each Senate District are assigned to candidates proportionally based on the percentages they receive on primary day.

Of the remaining 102 delegates, 67 are determined through a convention process that begins at precinct conventions (caucuses) on the night of March 4 and culminates with delegate allocation based on each candidate's delegate strength at the State Convention on June 6-8. Of those 67 delegates, 42 are "at large" rank and file delegates and 25 are pledged party leaders, legislators, and local elected officials.

The remaing 35 delegates are "unpledged" delegates, including 32 so-called "superdelegates" who are DNC Members, Members of Congress, a former House Speaker and a former DNC Chair. Three other delegate slots are reserved for highly-honored state Democrats, such as respected former officholders.

* 126 Senatorial District Level Delegates allocated by primary results.

* 42 At-Large Delegates and 25 Pledged Party Leaders, Democratic Mayors and Legislators, all allocated by the presidential preference of delegates attending the State convention (with a 15 percent threshold).

* 32 Super Delegates made up of Members of Congress, Members of the DNC, past House Speakers and former DNC Chairs.

* 3 Unpledged Delegates (Add-Ons) elected through a three-tier, post-primary convention process.

It ain't simple, that is for sure. Can we blame Tom Delay for that?

I was learning to Swim when Jaws was a box office hit. I was a little scared of the water.

I got over it.

But I remember (after seeing my first drive in film, Jaws, at about the age of 8) that I was taking swim lessons in the LI sound. I saw a dorsal fin in the water. I reported it to the lifeguard and they evacuated the entire beach. *EVERYONE PLEASE LEAVE THE WATER*

It turned out to be a dead sand shark floating. looking back, the fin was only in about 3 feet of water, at the most. That was when I got over my fear. I felt a little silly after that.

Quote by livingonli: We got our VCR in 1985 and it was $700 but it wasn't a front-loader. Those were already past that point. The hard part was convincing my parents to get cable when it became available in my area in the early 80's.

I got my first VCR around 1981ish - it was a floor model and a top loader - courtesy of my Dad. We worked it out that it would be birthday presents for the next few years. (Although he caved after the second year - he felt funny not sending me monetary presents. *g*)

When cable became available in our area, I was already working and decided to pay for it myself. My parents were split and Mom couldn't afford it (or she wouldn't, anyway).

The downside was that since the TV was hers, she tended to monopolize the cable so I rarely got to watch what I wanted.....

Did you have the cable box with the switch between groups of channels or the rotary dial?

We had the switch so that the box went from 2-13, 14-25, and 26-37. It was the closest thing to a remote then.

The biggest novelty on our system for some of us young males was discovering you could tune in Playboy if you held down 4 and 7.

And when I didn't have time for the podcast, I would catch the Sirius airing, but now they only air the third hour at 8 PM. They have an open channel where they could carry the whole show live so I could listen in my car. (channel 143 is supposed to be a talk channel but now only fires up for some sporting events).

It's still sitting on the Feds desk waiting for approval. It has been sitting there for awhile under review. While it has been expected to past, the long delay does seem to leave a lot of questions. Even the Bush FCC may be leery of only one satellite company being in business considering they shot down the DirecTV-Dish Network merger plans a few years ago.

The one plus for a merger for me would be I could have just one receiver in the car. At least maybe then there could be one channel just carrying Air America and then a second channel carrying other progressive talkers.

This was more of a primary assessment to see how serious I am about relocating...then the usual "what do you do for Athena" barrage of questions....but then they threw me by asking point-blank "why do you think this would be valuable in Maine?".

I think I supported myself rather well...

In any case, it's on to round two, I'm meeting with the Director of the Claims Services department next week. (which is odd for Athena, usually you start with HR and climb up the chain, I started at the top and seem to be working backwards...)

It amazes me how many people around here think Michael Moore is off his nut.

I just had an email conversation with a woman in another office of the hospital where I'm temping. Her son had to undergo a five organ transplant and had 32 operations even before that one. The insurance companies have given her nothing but grief and, ultimately, the family had to get senators involved in order to save her son's life.

She considers her son to be a hero. I said Michael Moore must be her other hero since he's the main reason universal health care is in the conversation for the presidential candidates this year.

Her reply was:

"No actually I think Michael Moore is lost and has no idea what he is talking about."

This is the second person I've met up with since I got back here who's this far gone about Michael Moore and his battle for us.

This woman, more than anyone, should appreciate the need for health care for all of us without having to battle insurance companies.

I just don't understand people sometimes.

And I think the local group discussing single payer health care needs to sponsor some free showings of "Sicko" just to educate people.

The right has been on a campaign to demonize Michael Moore for years. The righties went on the warpath when Fahrenheit 9-11 came out because god forbid you should criticize dear leader. Remember how they were trying to say that Moore made factual errors in the film but did not produce the evidence to back it out other than a book and another documentary which were nothing more than right-wing hit jobs attacking him because of the money he made off his documentaries.

But then again, if we have a Democratic house, senate, and administration, I think we'd need Air America Radio more than ever to be the voice of reason, since you know the right-wing radio will be in full swing for the next four years.

Rational disagreement and pointing out of problems will be helpful; damaging attack rhetoric is not.

But then again, AAR is it's own worst enemy; how many boneheaded programming and affiliate decisions have they made? (like killing "Unfiltered" and leaving Boston without a liberal radio station?)

One thing that I have noticed is that more stations call themselves Progressive Talk stations and use a variety of networks - AAR, Jones, and Nova M Radio.

Perhaps what we will see is the growth of progressive talk and a mix in each market of different hosts. It is hard to find a station that just carries the shows of a single netwok.

As for bad decisions, AAR has a LOT to live down. Honestly, I think the theme song for Springer on the Radio should have been "Born to be MILD."

AAR needs to figure out if they want to be progressive or not. PERIOD. Just IMO. Hartmann is still his own guy. Rach is AAR but so is Lionel. and to me lionel is not progressive. he is wonder bread. I am fine if they want to resposition themselves with the likes of say... Jones Radio, which is what I see happening, but if that is the case, then we need to stop thinking of the company as progressive. They are not and were not for a long time. After all... Jones carries Steph, Shultz and Boortz. I wanted AAP to be our answer to RWTR. I don't see that happening. I see companies understanding who and what radio personalities will make them money... and yes... that DOES directly correlate to who is in power in the upcoming election cycle.

These results determine the allocation of 4.5 delegate votes at the Democratic National Convention. Senator Obama won 2.5 delegate votes, and Senator Clinton 2 delegate votes. A further 2.5 votes will be determined at the Democrats Abroad Global Convention in April. In addition, Democrats Abroad holds 4 superdelegate votes. A total of 22 delegates, each with a half vote, will attend the Convention. The Democrats Abroad Global Primary was conducted February 5-12, 2008. Balloting took place at voting centers in over 30 countries, by mail and fax, and for the first time, on the Internet through a secure online voting system. Online ballots were cast from 164 countries and territories, from Antarctica to Zambia. "With the U.S. image so badly damaged by the present Administration, American Democrats living overseas were eager to have their voices heard," said Christine Schon Marques, International Chair of Democrats Abroad in Geneva. "Across the board we saw an enormous diversity in participation, including many first-time voters."

I think that Barack is holding his own - go Obama go!!! I think that Hillary is hogging the spotlight - she had definitely had more time on the mic than Obama has.

Agree with you completely, Raine....
