AT&T Could Owe You $146,000
FISA violation means $36,500 per claimant, per four years of wiretapping
The Legality Blog has an interesting read on just how much telecom providers like AT&T could owe their customers should the lawsuit against them for illegal wiretapping be allowed to proceed. While there are more than forty potential suits currently open against Sprint, Verizon and AT&T, the EFF's case against AT&T is the most highly visible, given it involved a 22-year former employee turned whistleblower. If the EFF case proceeds and it shows widespread violation of FISA laws, AT&T would be in some serious financial trouble:Code provision 50 U.S.C. § 1810 imposes civil liability on any person (or entity) for each violation of FISA. Victims of illegal surveillance are entitled to recover $100 for each day they were wiretapped, or actual damages over $1000, whichever is greater. Additionally, FISA provides compensation for attorney’s fees and other costs of litigation. . . As you may imagine, one hundred dollars per day, per person adds up over four years. If the Hepting lawsuit is successful, AT&T could face damages of over $36,500 per claimant per year. Nearly every person with a computer or phone in the United States could be impacted.
AT&T serves 14.2 million broadband customers and roughly 70 million landline users. If they were forced to pay $146,000 to each landline customer, AT&T could be facing a total legal liability cost of $10,220,000,000,000.

My older cat, Sandi, had a rough day yesterday.I accidentally shut her in a closet before I left for work. Usually they both are in the front room when I leave, but I was in a hurry and I didn't have time to investigate when I noticed they weren't there.
Poor Sandi! She was trapped there from 7:30AM until after 5:30PM. :(
I feel like such a bad mom.
And in the process, since of course she had to relieve her bladder, one silk dress and one silk kimono got "marked." I've found only one place locally that's willing to try to save them.
And just to put the icing on the cake, I was having some friends over for dinner and apartment decorating. Sandi was still so shook that she wouldn't even come to bed with me last night - the same room where the closet is.
I made damn sure I knew where both of them were before leaving today!

Funny that you mention this. Yesterday I noticed that Camille was outside for MUCH longer than usual. I try not to sweat it since she used to be outside for 12 hours or more at a time, back when I was in NY. But Bob and I decided to take a quick peek for her. She was in the neighbors yard, and she would come when called, altho I could hear her shuffling around (she doesn't really meow)
Turns out this silly feline somehow got her front paw stuck in her collar....I don't know how long she was there, and yeah I felt bad.
She was so glad to be carried back home. She ate some Ice cream and went right to sleep.

I got home from work and after about 10 minutes, I said "Where's Parker?" Former girlfriend had not noticed that she hadn't seen her since she got home from work.

We had a Maine Coon cat that used to hang out in the back yard only. She was a big time hunter and would stalk a gopher or mole for hours. She also went after baby black birds because their parents were always bothering her. That was the icky part. Any hoo, one day she did leave the back yard and we searched for her for three days. It was the saddest three days. Late on the third day, she came home covered in pine tree sap and skinny as a rail. Evidently she had run up a tree and couldn't get down. She was quite the talker and we heard about it for days, especially when we were trying to de-sap her. Sweet kitty except when she was in a mood.![]()

The idea that it would rotate every 4 years or so, based upon the average voting stats, the more your state vote4s the more important ... and earlier you get to vote in the primary!

Kansas? Utah? Iowa? Minnesota?, yo hey der!!
Other than Illinois the states he’s won we’re not going to carry anyway in the general election.
Way to Alienate Americans, there Dude. People like you give liberals a real bad name.
REAL BAD.
You remember Howard Deans 50 State strategy? it was to overcome attitudes like this that entire states are not viable.
You just reinforced a very republican stereotype.
AND also, and maybe even more important, you just verbally disenfranchised lot of people who ARE democrats (members of OUR PARTY) in those states who REALLY feel like their votes count just as much as NY and California… and you know what?
They do.
OK, I am not done… Obama Won Georgia. He not only won Georgia, but it is an open primary state, Repubs are allowed to vote for dems.
He won. SOUNDLY.
you may want to call it a country bumpkin state and that is fine, but do your history, that was a huge win.
NOW — I am done.

If you Want to see my Tax Returns you are acting like Ken Starr:
From the Hill:
Ann Lewis and Howard Wolfson, top aides to Clinton, held a conference call with reporters in which they said that Obama’s calling on the former first lady to release her tax returns were similar to attacks from the GOP that the Clintons have faced before.
“I for one do not believe that imitating Ken Starr is a way to win a Democratic primary for the presidency,” Wolfson said.
Methinks the lady doth protest too much. Especially after it was Hillary who made "Mr. Lazio, release those tax returns" a key part of her 2000 Senate campaign against Republican Rick Lazio. Back then Hillary said it was "frankly disturbing" that a candidate would waffle over when they were going to release their returns. But now that she's the one waffling, saying she may release them "around" April 15 (if we're lucky), suddenly it's the Spanish Inquisition to expect her to be true to her previous word. (Obama released his returns a year ago.)
And a quick word about the "around" April 15th quasi-promise. Does around April 15 mean before or after the final important primary in Pennsylvania on April 22? And even if it's before April 22, how much before? Is Hillary planning on dumping 7 years worth of tax documents on the media with only days to go before the Pennsylvania primary, so there's no time for the media to fully vet the documents, no time for Democratic voters to find out what's in them and have all the facts before voting? Why not just release them now? It costs a dime to go to Kinkos. What is Hillary hiding that she would invoke Monica - Monica! - in order to change the subject?
Hillary's campaign also argues that there are 20 years of her tax returns already released to the public. Well, yes - from 1980 to 2000. It's now 2008. We don't get to see the last 8 years? That's an odd standard, and in any case, she didn't demand in 2000 that Rick Lazio only release his returns pre-1992.
One more thing. This of course now means that Hillary was the one acting like Kenn Starr when she demanded that Lazio release his returns.

Essentially, the Court has told the Bush Administration attorneys that their arguments re: if we tell you all the truth, we'll all die, are bulls*&t. And the Ninth Circuit is one that just might have the balls to let the case go forward. UNLESS the new FISA act stops it in its tracks with Telcom immunity...

"Legal" is the term she used - and it's inflamatory - and that's why I LOVE Randi. The more subtle problem is not whether HRC can win "legally" rather, will a technically legal win will be seen as legitimate by the other half of the Democratic Party. Because without legitimacy, it is impossible for HRC to lead (Robert A. Dahl).

Technically tath would be legal, but I think it would be a big problem for a lot of dems.
Right now she is behind, in th epop vote and the delagates, I know I don't have to tell you that, and I am really uptite about these 2 states.
She agreed to no Delelgates.

Exactly!! -- So the issue is the legality - it's the legitimacy of the nomination. Even worse, the
perception of legitimacy - ack! What a clusterf$&k!!
