Unless you've been living under a rock, the huge story yesterday was a Washington Post research article about Mitt Romney's youth while at the prestigious Cranbrook School. The story itself was an odd mix of Romney's accomplishments and leadership with his penchant for cruel pranks. Two of those pranks stand out:
One venerable English teacher, Carl G. Wonnberger, nicknamed “the Bat” for his diminished eyesight, was known to walk into the trophy case and apologize, step into wastepaper baskets and stare blindly as students slipped out the back of the room to smoke by the open windows. Once, several students remembered the time pranksters propped up the back axle of Wonnberger’s Volkswagen Beetle with two-by-fours and watched, laughing from the windows, as the unwitting teacher slammed the gas pedal with his wheels spinning in the air.

As an underclassman, Romney accompanied Wonnberger and Pierce Getsinger, another student, from the second floor of the main academic building to the library to retrieve a book the two boys needed. According to Getsinger, Romney opened a first set of doors for Wonnberger, but then at the next set, with other students around, he swept his hand forward, bidding the teacher into a closed door. Wonnberger walked right into it and Getsinger said Romney giggled hysterically as the teacher shrugged it off as another of life’s indignities.

Back on the handsome campus, studded with Tudor brick buildings and manicured fields, he spotted something he thought did not belong at a school where the boys wore ties and carried briefcases. John Lauber, a soft-spoken new student one year behind Romney, was perpetually teased for his nonconformity and presumed homosexuality. Now he was walking around the all-boys school with bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye, and Romney wasn’t having it.

“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann, his close friend in the Stevens Hall dorm, according to Friedemann’s recollection. Mitt, the teenage son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, kept complaining about Lauber’s look, Friedemann recalled.

A few days later, Friedemann entered Stevens Hall off the school’s collegiate quad to find Romney marching out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Lauber’s hair. Friedemann followed them to a nearby room where they came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors.

The rest of the article lists typical pranks a teenager might play, and describes his admirable actions as well. But it's these two items - particularly the second one - that has everyone aTwitter. Republicans are calling it a smear job from Obama (despite the Washington Post being an unimpeachable news source). Democrats say it fits into a pattern of lack of empathy (along with strapping dogs to the car roof and firing people for profit).

He denies remembering doing it, but others have stepped forward saying yes - it did happen and it was "assault and battery". Gay Rights activists have condemned the incident as "an act of torment".

Romney knows this is a problem for his campaign. He has gone so far as to ask a friend to counter the story:
Stu White told ABC News that Romney’s older brother asked him and several other classmates to counter the story. White said he was uncertain whether he would offer his support..

Another former classmate of Romney, who wished to remain anonymous, told ABC News that Romney’s behavior in high school reminded him of “Lord of the Flies.”

Now that President Obama has been lauded for supporting gay marriage, these incidents color Romney in an even uglier light. Now he has offered a blanket "apology" for pranks, while insisting he doesn't remember the specific incident, and that "homosexuality was the furthest thing from his mind". He's also said he's "fine with gay couples adopting children". They just can't be married gay couples adopting children. Apparently, the child is better off with the parents "living in sin".

The House, meanwhile, in their never-ending quest to be the anti-Obama, passed a measure to prevent the Justice Dept from using taxpayer funds to actively oppose DOMA. Once again, House Republicans are ignoring polls to the contrary, and pretending that they are doing the will of the people by suppressing rights for all Americans.

In particular - those gay kids that Romney tormented will grow up and adopt children into their unwed households. What happens when one of those two in the relationship dies? The widow(er) and the child are not protected by law. Romney and the House Republicans are okay with that. That's the 800 lb gorilla in the room: They claim they're not anti-gay, just anti-gay-marriage.

Riiiiiight.....

Will today's blog address the Morgan-Stanley 2 billion dollar derivative debacle?

it will not. It is up now, however.

The more I think about this Romney story -- the more angry I get about it. To WaPo's credit -- it is front page on this mornings paper.

Aside from his arrest in Massachusetts (which has been verified) Did anyone else know about these Romney arrests? Can I get some help in verifying them?

An article about said trading debacle. And Jamie Diamon says we don't need tighter regulation. To that I say, your company just lost 2 billion dollars doing the same thing that was at the heart of the 2008 finanacial meltdown. HORSESHIT, you do need to be more tightly regulated.

We're sorry we did something stupid and risky. We're sorry that like most of the really risky propritary trading we off-shored it to London when there is even less oversite of what we do. How about we are sorry for being some of the most egregious, arrogant buttheads in the history of captialism.

We planted our around the same time, right?

Are they getting enough sun?

It's been a little strange for me, Mala. I am literally having people in the neighborhood stop and ask what I am doing. (or Bob if he is out front) Don't get me wrong, I am proud of the garden -- but I really don't see me doing anything out of the ordinary-- with the exception of using the spent grains in the soil, I just water and use miracle grow once a month.

We make sure the soil is healthy. It has a balanced drainage system (Bob built it like that last year) This year was a big gamble, planting everything from seed -- except the cabbage. I tried, but the seedlings were to wiry. SO I decided to pick up a 4 pack from MOM's market -- and even then, it turned into 6 plants. I broke them apart and replanted.

Bob says I have a green thumb, but I don't buy it. I really believe this is easy stuff, you try -- you fail, you try again.

Started ours inside and they got a little root bound while we prepped the garden.

Full sun, soil's good we amended with compost, even rotated the what's growing where. Can't use miracle grow, we supposed to be organic

haven't put on any Fish Fertilizer yet though, might have to do that next watering

so it sounds like in small quantities its okay, hmmm, see we're only supposed to use organic - last year the one plot that used MG had some crazy large squash, we called them the cheaters

The fish fertilizer works really well when I remember to use it and I think its about the same price. We got a good size bottle for 7.99. Granted it does stick like crazy

I am of mixed mind wrt to MG. I truly am. This year was a big step for me, trying to grow everything from seed.

I will say I have no issues with using it on my flowers. The rest, everything in moderation.

What I do know is that I have no monsanto veggies this year. That was my goal.

might have monsanto seeds by accident, I'll have to be more careful when we buy for next year. Though a lot of times we buy plants from Southern States. This reminds me I have to move my sweet potato cuttings into soil, the roots are long enough now ;).my first year trying this. Just hoping I don't find as many black widows! I hate those!!!!

I think my wife and I are headed for a major argument when I get home tonight.

Got an innocuous text message saying I shouldn't go into Sophie's (cat #3) room when I get home and I'll know why later. I insisted she tell me now and she said there's the cutest cat in there. She's now off having dinner with her friend.

I literally blew my stack. I have enough problems supporting a wife that can't work and 3 cats (with one getting on in years) now. And she adds a 4th one.....

I just said it better be gone when I get home.......

I have a feeling it won't be.

I do love cats, but there's a limit.

If she got it from our neighbor in the next apartment which sounds like what happened, THEY can take care of it. Kinda difficult for stray cats to make it to the 3rd floor.

I am not in a position to judge, but I would question that kind of retribution. It doesn't seem in line with the situation.

I know Raine. I know.

Thing is, I'll calm down and realize that it's no good to escalate. I'm just lashing out now.

Hopefully my commute home is uneventful...
this is a good place to lash out. Please know I wasn't trying to shut you down.

With my living situation in flux right now, I wish I could take it in.

If she got it from our neighbor in the next apartment which sounds like what happened, THEY can take care of it. Kinda difficult for stray cats to make it to the 3rd floor.

Oh.

Oh.

This is uncomfortable. Much different from when Bob talked me into welcoming momma cat and her birthing kittens a few months later.

It puts me in a position of possibly having to do something very cruel to a living thing that doesn't deserve it (and she knows damn well I won't). The only thing I can do that would possibly have any effect on her is disable the internet (or at the very least block Facebook).

You know when we took on cat 5 and cat 6 (Missy and Pippin of blessed memory), Since we were both there when we found them mewling in the yard, there was a certain obligation to take care of them until they were weaned. I didn't want to keep them but, I came around to that position. Mrs Mondo and I both relized they came to us for a reason, so we kept them. It was a mutual decesion though.

Cat "crisis" over.

The cat did come from our neighbor who has her because the cat won't get along with the neighbor's sister's cats. I very politely asked if she could take the cat back because 4 cats are too many for us. It took almost a year to get Cat #3 acclimated and I really don't want to go through that now.

I just think 4 cats in a two bedroom apartment is too much, and I do feel sorry for poor Miles, she must be terrified.

I now have two scratched up arms and I"m covered with cat fur....
