No warning Sirens?

No Sirens Warned Downtown of Tornado
Minutes before a deluge of rain and hail hit the south Decatur neighborhood of Oakhurst on Saturday, a siren sounded a steady wail.
A man's voice boomed: "Attention. A tornado warning is in effect for Agnes Scott College. Seek shelter now. I repeat: A tornado warning is in effect."
Perched atop a college library, the siren didn't reach only students. It also delivered the primary warning for residents nearby who were not tuned in to a television, radio or the Internet.
Agnes Scott's siren is a rare piece of equipment in DeKalb County, which dismantled its outdoor siren system years ago. Fulton County did the same, citing upkeep costs.[...]
State emergency officials do not track who sounds what sirens or where. [...] "We feel that is a local decision."
Does this sound familiar? Maybe not if thought about as just a local issue, but this is a sympton of a bigger problem in this country. Georgia is a Red State, and the fact that they cut costs by ridding programs like this should send out a huge siren to all people.
This is the result of Government being slashed and gutted, with the lack of oversight, the lack of emergency management and the lack of regulation.
Departments like the FDC have been gutted, and the results we have seen could have been prevented by sounding the sirens that they once had available to them. People and pets may not be dead today. The FDC says it has neither the money nor the resources to do it job. In the meantime we have more medicine recalls than at any time in modern history, and the cost of precription drugs are skyrocketing. Regulation and government oversight used to prevent this.
The USDA has experienced the same. Their job is to sound the Siren when our food is contaminated. That no longer happens. How many food recalls have happened AFTER someone died?
What about the banking industry? Because of deregulation, we are in a national Mortgage Crisis. The Dollar is tanking. Regulation is meant to be our financial siren.
Same can be said for the deregulation of the Airline industry. There is no regulation, only a constant presence of the government more concerned with terror, than making sure those planes are safe. (Google Northwest Airline)
How about the Electric Industry? That was deregulated as well. How many of us over the years have seen our electric bills skyrocket? How many have experienced more frequent power outages? Slow service repairs?
Do I need to mention the Oil industry? Oil at over 110 dollars a barrel. The government says let the market handle it while Americans are more frequently forced to choose between heat and food or medicine, or a combination of them.
The Consumer Products Safety board is guilty as well, they do not issue warnings until they are forced to... and that is usually AFTER someone has died.
We already Know about FEMA..... then there is the mining industry. I could go on. The list is so deep and so wide.
The idea of Government oversite and regulation of these industries was put in place to ensure that Americans are safe and secure in their houses and homes and persons. That is a constitutional right. Republican policies of the free market and deregulation have done the opposite.
It is time for us to listen to the warning sirens we can hear and make sure come November we change this course. America so far - like Atlanta - actually has been very lucky. We still have a chance to prevent the worst from happening. We have a chance to REMANTLE that which has been dismantled.

Sorry I've not been around of late. Work and sick wife have been keeping me busy. Yesterday we got bad news......... I made my wife call the doctor because her flu was not better - 4th day.
She has pneumonia and a very high fever! Thank God the doctor saw her. Anywho, I'm trying to work extra hours in order to pay for a DC trip, as well as save up for the upcoming rapture/armageddon.
To make it sadder........ today is the one year anniversary of the death of our dog Max, due to the tainted Chinese dog food. :cry:

IF I may say something. regarding Florida and Michigan... As awful as the situation is, Dosn't it matter MOST that they get up and VOTE in the GEneral election?

MY candidate is no longer around, The media did a hellova job taking care of that, and YES I felt some what disenfranchised (again not to excuse it) But I NEVER not ONCE said I would not get out in the GE and vote for a Dem.

Besides, if I am to understand even with those 2 states, Hillary probably would not be ahead in delagates... but that is another issue, I believe.

I go back and forth on closed primaries, because I don't want to force people to tie themselves to a single party in order to have a say in who runs for President. On the other hand, I absolutely HATE the idea of cross-party voting to SCREW UP the other side.

Saying "that's the way the system works" and "be a part of the process" is problematic to me, though -- as much as I'm all about following the rules -- because it implies that you accept or approve of the system/process. There must be a meaningful way to change the system/process first. This election cycle is further evidence that there isn't such a way yet.

This is why I have advocated MORE being done in bewtween election years to build up third parties... PLUS, I really believe that states NEED to make it easier for third parties to get ON the states ballots.

This is why they are able to happen at all, they are PARTY functions. IT is the STATES that decide who gets to be on the ballots.

This is why is so important to work at the grassroots and states level. Our country has grown quite a bit since our forefathers. The elections were all about the electoral collage. People in this country have always ligned themselves somewhat to a party, and those that choose not to have never been excluded. The thing that I need to point out is that Primaries are not a constitutional right. They are functions of political parties, which, like religion cannot be sanctioned by the government.
Plus, While Washington Did Warn us about political parties, he also warned about it in the sme breadth as the USA getting involed in foreign affairs. He did warn us about putting party about governmetn for the betterment of the Union. I believe in that. I do.
But as far as political Parties, They did exist, we had at least 2 at the time, Federalist Party (led by Hamilton) 1789–1820 and the Democratic-Republican Party (Led by Jefferson) 1792–1824
I don't know if the Anti federalists were considered a party, by they certainly were a political affiliation.

I had the satellite radio machine on driving in to work and I caught Steph's segment and I think she was on for about a minute. I think they should giver her some box wine for wasting her time (and some box wine for me for wasting my time). And I went away from Sam to do that. Two contract employees of the State Department were fired and a third person was disciplined for accessing passport records of Sen. Barack Obama "without a need to do so," State Department officials confirmed to NBC News.
The three people who had access to Obama's passport records were contract employees of the department's Bureau of Consular Affairs, NBC News has learned. The unauthorized activity concerning Obama's passport information occurred in January.
"A monitoring system was tripped when an employee accessed the records of a high-profile individual,” a department official told NBC News. "When the monitoring system is tripped, we immediately seek an explanation for the records access. If the explanation is not satisfactory, the supervisor is notified."[/Quote

The State Dept has security to prevent this. A NOTICE pops up on the screen, alerting the viewer that they are about to break the law. So, these low level employees KNEW what they were doing.........and did it anyway.
