How to listen to progressive talk the hard way.
Author: livingonli    Date: 04/23/2008 05:54:47

In light of some other bloggers recent comments I felt the need to throw in my own.

Progressive Radio seems to be in another state of flux as a result of the whole Randi Rhodes situation. Here in the New York area, we have always had at least one alternative voice to counter the spin and disinformation of the M$M. For many years, the main choice was Pacifica Radio’s WBAI which always had an eclectic mix of programs to tune in. But, in recent years, the station has been a victim of factions and in-fighting with staff turnover that has turned the station into an un-listenable mess of amateur programming and hacks who are on the air because they are friends with current Program Director Bernard White. Except for Democracy Now! and a handful of smaller shows, I can’t listen to it anymore.

Fortunately, on March 31, 1994, Air America came on the air.

We in the New York area had received the network from day one through first WLIB and then later WWRL. I also ended up purchasing satellite radio so that I could listen to the programming of Air America and other progressive talk shows when I was outside of the New York area. Recent programming changes at Air America and at WWRL have created conditions where I lost the ability to listen to certain shows without being tied to the computer. It was one thing when I needed the internet to listen to Steph, but now like some other people I have to be tied to the computer to hear hours 2 and 3 of Thom or Randi Rhodes live and how many people can do that if they need to get other activities done. The convenience of being able to listen to these shows in my car or on a regular radio helped me quite a bit. So, you can compare the choices, here are the weekday schedules for WWRL, “Air America” XM 167 and Sirius Left-Sirius 146.

WWRL;
6-9 AM Local morning show (whose description disappeared from the web site)
9-11 AM Infomercials (who listens to Infomercials on the radio anyway?)
11AM-Noon Dr. Ron Daniels
Noon-3 PM Ed Schultz
3-6 PM Air America Afternoons (apparently WWRL’s new deal with Air America locks them into carrying the network at that time so no Randi).
6-8 PM Rachel Maddow
8-10 PM Al Sharpton (delayed broadcast)
10 PM-1 AM Alan Colmes

XM 167:
6-9 AM Bill Press (AAR no longer provides programming for this time slot)
9 AM-Noon Lionel
Noon-3 PM Ed Schultz (Exclusivity apparently doesn’t require them to carry the network full-time as is)
3-6 PM Air America Afternoons (no word on whether XM will bring back Randi any time soon)
6-8 PM Rachel Maddow
8-10 PM Thom Hartmann (first two hours delayed)
10 PM-Midnight Mike Malloy (hours 1 and 2 on slight delay)
Midnight-2 AM Clout (delayed)
2-4 AM Jon Elliot (hours 1 and 2 delayed)
4-6 AM Thom Hartmann repeat

Sirius 146:
6-9 AM Bill Press
9 AM-Noon Alex Bennett (in-house)
Noon-1 PM Thom Hartmann (first hour only)
1-3 PM Lynn Samuels (in-house)
3-5 PM Ed Schultz (hours 1 and 2)
5-8 PM Make It Plain with Mark Thompson (in-house)
8-9 PM Stephanie Miller (hour 3 only)
9 PM-Midnight Mike Malloy
Midnight-3 AM Thom Hartmann (all 3 hours)
3-5 AM Lynn Samuels repeat

So what are your options or are you stuck in front of the computer all day? Feel free to discuss.

In Atlanta our ONLY option is streaming or buy satelite radio. About a year after AAR started, we had a station that played the entire AAR lineup. It was great. However, after the one year contract was up, the owner decided to convert the station to an "Arts and Music" station. He kept Al Franken until Al retired from AAR.

Although GA is a red state, the Atlanta area is VERY blue. It's unimagineable to me that this radio market can't support a left-wing radio station. After AirAtlanta closed up shop, we were part of an effort to get one of the local stations to change, but due to lack of interest, that petered out.

Until some programming director with some balls and vision comes along, we're tied to the computer...

Good morning! Good job there liv!

Someday I want to liv in an area that has prog radio. Someday. I have always been tied to the computer for my listening pleasure.

Comment by TriSec on 04/23/2008 12:52:45
Well, it boggles my mind that Boston/Cambridge does not have an AAR station.

We're similar to Atlanta...about a year after the startup, we got a station. It was low-wattage and I could only pick it up during the day and line-of-sight, but it was affiliated with the FM powerhouse "Kiss 108" and seemed immune from financial pressures. There was even a permit pulled to construct a new antenna and increase the wattage.

Less than a year into it, the owners decided to change format to the lucrative Spanish-language format, which of course there was a huge demand for in the Boston area.

Did I mention that it was owned by Clear Channel?

Anyway, there was a group founded, and a grassroots movement started that had some steam for about a month. There was a petition, and a lot of angry people, but they drifted away once it became apparent that we couldn't do a damn thing.

I don't listen to much anymore. I hardly get a chance to listen to Momma....I don't even pick up Dr. Maddow's podcast anymore, but I'm trying to remember to get on to NovaM in the afternoons for Thom...

Hey Bob and Raine!

You have to remember, Atlanta may be blue, but the corporations that broadcast here...ClearChannel, Cox Communications are all Red to the core

As such, combined with the religious right's domination of local politics, especially state politics they pool resources together and usually, 'buy out' stations cause they don't want that damn liberal stuff on the airwaves...

We're in the land of Neal "Fair Tax tooth fairy" Boortz and the evil empire Cox Corp (basically Newscorp-South)

There is a petition, but maybe someday after Obama is elected, we'll have a local station again... Daily Reading has been posted

Morning all!

:rage: don't get me started on our "progressive" station! It more than sucks. Its owned by CC, but often the quality sounds just like they are holding a cheap omni microphone to a cellphone that has a radio station playing in the background! I swear! Oh, and have I mentioned that they shut off at sunset? That's around 5:15 in the winter. :rage:

Anywho. Aunt Azalea will be appearing later this morning. She got up really early and felt compelled to write a blog because she was sooooo angry!! She'll post it after SMS if there's no complaints.

Here in the "Blue" state of CT, I have to stream or buy satellite. Yup! We used to have "The Voice" in New Haven, but it got replaced by sports radio.

:star:'s 2 favorite moments in Obama's speech last night.

1) :: obama supporter :: "We love you Obama!"

:: obama :: "Love you too!"

Can we say "ROCK STAR!?"

2) "We can be the people who don't do anything to win, but know why we should!"

For those that missed it last night... Does this look like an unendorsment? From the NYT:

The Low Road to Victory

The Pennsylvania campaign, which produced yet another inconclusive result on Tuesday, was even meaner, more vacuous, more desperate, and more filled with pandering than the mean, vacuous, desperate, pander-filled contests that preceded it.

Voters are getting tired of it; it is demeaning the political process; and it does not work. It is past time for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton to acknowledge that the negativity, for which she is mostly responsible, does nothing but harm to her, her opponent, her party and the 2008 election.

If nothing else, self interest should push her in that direction. Mrs. Clinton did not get the big win in Pennsylvania that she needed to challenge the calculus of the Democratic race. It is true that Senator Barack Obama outspent her 2-to-1. But Mrs. Clinton and her advisers should mainly blame themselves, because, as the political operatives say, they went heavily negative and ended up squandering a good part of what was once a 20-point lead.

On the eve of this crucial primary, Mrs. Clinton became the first Democratic candidate to wave the bloody shirt of 9/11. A Clinton television ad — torn right from Karl Rove’s playbook — evoked the 1929 stock market crash, Pearl Harbor, the Cuban missile crisis, the cold war and the 9/11 attacks, complete with video of Osama bin Laden. “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen,” the narrator intoned.

If that was supposed to bolster Mrs. Clinton’s argument that she is the better prepared to be president in a dangerous world, she sent the opposite message on Tuesday morning by declaring in an interview on ABC News that if Iran attacked Israel while she were president: “We would be able to totally obliterate them.”

I just got a deal on a rental car. I was trying to call the Enterprise office so I could arrange to be picked up tomorrow evening and no one answered the phone.

Then I started thinking that it would be more convenient to pick up the car near to where I'm working and, since it looks like I'll have an interview on Monday morning, I can just drive to the interview, drop off the car and have them drive me to work.

And the best part? It's about $40 cheaper! Woohoo!

That should pay for almost one night in the hotel. *g*

Blackest thumb you've ever seen.

Actually, this is a little different than that. I want to give myself a little privacy in my bedroom, but I'd like to leave the curtains drawn a bit so my cats can see out. (I'm on the first floor.) How hard would it be to set up some kind of window box that would obscure the outside view from me, but might attract birds, etc and afford me that measure of privacy? And what could I plant that would grow fast and stay green through the warm weather without a lot of "tending?"

I used to drive my 1990 everywhere - at least three or four trips back and forth between Chicago and Pittsburgh.

Then the windshield wipers quit on a trip back during a rainstorm on a highway at 70mph in the far left lane. And the driver's seatbelt broke immediately after pulling off to the side of the road.

Then the alternator quit about ten miles from home with no warning.

Then, while visiting with friends at a hotel about fifteen miles away, the starter stopped.

That was when I began renting cars for any trip over two hours away.

Enterprise has pretty good deals and they'll pick you up and drop you off too.

How does that work? Do you have to bring the driver back to the location, or do they bring 2 cars?

Also, if they show up late, do they try and charge you for an extra hour? Not trying to be a cheapie, but I don't want to get nickel and dimed on their error.

Can you tell I am a bit independent? Not a big fan of relying on other people being responsible.

They pick you up wherever you ask them to - generally from home or work and you fill out the paperwork before driving away in the rental car.

Then, when you're finished, you drop the car off at the agency, complete any other paperwork necessary or just give them the keys and they drive you back to wherever you need to be - again generally home or work, wherever your normal transportation car resides.

The start and end times are from when you drive away and when you arrive back again. If there are any problems with the car while you have it, let them know when you return the car. Most agencies will give you some sort of discount to make up for any problems.

Hotel check-out is 12:00. Last time we got together we had a late breakfast before splitting up. I ended up leaving with HBK just before 2 PM and it took me 8 hours to get home that time between rain and construction work on I-95. Hope I don't have to go through that again.

If you get on at Farragut North take the Red line to Glenmont but get out at Metro Center. Find one of the people in the info box (near the tickets) and have them show you how to get do to the Orange line platform and take Orange line to Vienna off at Rosslyn.

So the first hour of Rachel is now a straight MSNBC simulcast and with David Bender doing the last hour more or less (which I can only hear online) that means Rachel's pretty much back to an hour of her own show.

Is that what they said at the top of the show? If so, I'm *really* disappointed. I don't listen to Rachel to hear David Gregory. I listen for Rachel's sharp, insightful take on the events of the day.

MSNBC, just give Rachel her own show and put AAR out of our misery.

Comment by livingonli on 04/23/2008 23:16:02
Yes, it was road of the White House but they ran slightly behind MSNBC because AAR still has top of the hour news so they don't match up due to the different outlets break formats.

Comment by livingonli on 04/23/2008 23:18:06
They should just give Rachel the 6 PM hour and move that pundit crap to another time. Of course if Air America were to go under, it would be another story. But with the thinning out of the talent I don't know how much longer they can go on.

Comment by Raine on 04/23/2008 23:40:59
Sheez. Are you kidding me? AAR is simulcasting MSNBC?

Yes, I agree, give her her own show already, let David go back to doing what he does best, reporting.

Comment by shelaghc on 04/24/2008 00:10:45
I'm hoping Rachel was just so tired from last night that she needed a break.

I guess we'll find out tomorrow.....

Evening, folks!

Great night to be a Boston sports fan...the Sox are trying to keep a 7-game win streak alive, and the Celtics are feasting on the Hawks. Meanwhile, I've poured myself a double-martini and have KofB all set up here in the lounge.

Ahhhh.....it's all good.

Comment by livingonli on 04/24/2008 01:12:32
That's livin' the life Tri. How does your brother feel about Da Bruins?

Comment by TriSec on 04/24/2008 01:18:00
Well, they could have just as easily been swept. Taking it to 7 games was actually quite an achievement for this team...

Comment by livingonli on 04/24/2008 01:21:01
That is true. They weren't expected to go the distance. The Rangers-Devils series was expected to go the distance but ended in 5. Although the round against the Penguins will be tougher.

Pfft. You could be watching the Alaska special on Mythbusters. The are crashing cars into a rubber moose! Television doesn't get much better than that! Next they will be blowing shit up!

*snort* Well, I was once on a camping trip up in Maine, and we needed to canoe out into the lake and pull in a buoy. Did I mention this was in January?

Anyway, one of the dudes pulled out a shotgun and starting blasting a path through the ice, and when that was done, he pulled out a 9mm and emptied the clip into the lake.

We got the buoy...

Well the dynamite was under an SUV. It put a small crater in the thick Alaska ice. Then on take two, they had something like a dozen sticks of TNT in shaped charge things. BOOM.

This rubber moose thing is just downright weird, Tri. Tory is totally into it.

Comment by Mondobubba on 04/24/2008 01:57:54
So the myth with the rubber moose is you need to speed up if you are hitting moose and it will do less damage. It is BUSTED!

Comment by livingonli on 04/24/2008 02:01:16
Could that also apply to hitting a deer.

I just read a comment on Rachel's blog. Apparently Rachel will be a regular on "The Race for the White House" every night from now on and AAR will be simulcasting that show instead of her first hour every night as well.

So instead of two hours of Rachel and one of David Bender, we get one hour of David Gregory with a few minutes of Rachel, a severly truncated version of Rachel's show in a one hour dose and an hour of David Bender taking calls.

Count on "Ask Dr. Maddow" to go away along with the weekly giveaway of Kent Jones' photos. :-<

Between that and the guest hosts, the race to the bottom continues. And it looks like a lot of the upcoming 3-6 hosts are Hillary supporters. A management initiative.
