Symbiosis
Author: BobR    Date: 05/16/2008 12:14:23

sym·bi·o·sis [sim-bee-oh-sis, -bahy-] –noun,
1. Biology. a. the living together of two dissimilar organisms, as in mutualism, commensalism, amensalism, or parasitism.
2. Psychiatry. a relationship between two people in which each person is dependent upon and receives reinforcement, whether beneficial or detrimental, from the other.
3. Psychoanalysis. the relationship between an infant and its mother in which the infant is dependent on the mother both physically and emotionally.
4. any interdependent or mutually beneficial relationship between two persons, groups, etc.

There are many examples of symbiosis in the natural world. There's the crocodile bird that eats parasites on the skin of the croc, and in turn the croc doesn't eat the bird. There's the clown fish which protects sea anemones from predators, and in turn the anemone provides shelter to the clown fish from its predators. There's the e-coli bacteria in our digestive tract that help us digest our food, while we provide them with a place to live and food to eat.

Within politics there are symbiotic relationships as well. The most obvious one is between political parties and news organizations.

The various political machines provide sensationlist fodder to the news organizations, and the news organizations provide an outlet for their talking points. This has served the Republicans well over the last number of years as political operatives essentially wrote the stories that the news reported. It seemed like the TV news channels never bothered to do any research. They never called Republicans on their outlandish assertions. They never verified the stories were true. If any dared step out of line, then they were dealt with (think: Dan Rather and the planted false documents). In turn, TV News became a profit center.

Slowly, however, the tables are turning. The news organizations are beginning to realize that they need to unhitch their wagon from the Republicans. With the Republicans increasingly becoming perona non grata within the populist political arena, the relationship has turned sour. We are seeing the news go after Republicans (and their apologists in talk radio) and call them on their bullshit more and more. A perfect example of this is this clip from Hardball (which Raine posted in the comments and on the board yesterday):

Two years ago you would never see a Republican talking point questioned. They would have let the "nazi" part slide, and discussed why Obama was "appeasing" Hamas. Now?... now they are being asked to put up or shut up. The crocodile has learned to clean itself. Let's hope it remains as self-sufficient when the Democrats take power so that we don't become the thing we've loathed - a parasite providing digestive gas to a fickle host.

Mornin' Everybody! :coffee:

Kevin "I flunked High School History" James is a freakin' moron - what an idiot!

I kept wondering if Dubya could have answered Tweety's question any better - I think not. He likely would have been just as moronic and stumbly as KJ - ugh. I bet some flunky got her/his ass chewed out for not googling Neville Chamberlain before the show. What a maroon Great post BobR!

Cheers,

mfaye

Kevin James = total loon. and taken to school by Matthews, that's just pathetic.

Hey Everyone...sorry...to rehash...but everyone needs to read this...

Like that list I posted yesterday of Bush & Hitler actions...

MUST READ:

Larisa Alexandrovna: All the President's Nazis (real and imagined): An Open Letter to Bush - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/larisa-alexandrovna/all-the-presidents-nazis_b_102022.html

A taste: I am ashamed of you Mr. Bush. I am ashamed of those who applauded your political porn played out against the hallowed backdrop of the Holocaust. I am ashamed of those reporters with you, who between them could not muster the moral courage to call you out on your ugly rhetoric and ask you about your own family Nazi ties. You are, sir, the most abhorrent human being of my lifetime. I dare say, in the lifetime of this nation.

Pete Stark just endorsed Barack Obama.

Needed to win:

Obama: 124

Clinton: 309

Edwards still has 11 delegates outstanding, and there are a total 421 remaining delegates.

This does NOT include Michigan and Florida. With those: the number is 453.

Yeah I've heard that too. George Soros was on the News Hour earlier this week. He was talking about how money has gone out of housing and in to oil, causing a bubble. I was saying this weeks ago. I predict that the price of oil will collapse with in the next six months.

I just got an email from Hillary Clinton asking me to tell the DNC to count the votes in Michigan and Florida.

: snerk :

How should I word it so the delegates are split fairly since Obama's name wasn't on the ballot in Michigan and, while neither of them actively campaigned in Florida, Hillary certainly had large fund raising events that certainly impacted the number of votes she received.

Okay, no one jumped in with a suggestion so I tried my hand at composing something.

How's this sound:

To the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee:

Michigan and Florida deserve a voice in the Democratic Presidential primary. Obviously those who made the decision to break the rules and hold their primaries early were wrong. But the people in their respective states should not suffer for that. Nor should the rest of the Democratic party.

Therefore, the only fair thing would be to split the delegates evenly between both the candidates. Senator Obama's name was not on the Michigan ballot and, although neither candidate openly campaigned in Florida, Senator Clinton held large fundraising events that certainly impacted the number of votes she received.

The fairest thing for all parties is to split the delegates evenly. In this way, Michigan and Florida voters are not disenfranchised and neither candidate has an unfair advantage.

Thank you for your time.

And now I'm off again.

Late for picking up my mother.

Earlier, I mentioned an Obama Smackdown... here is the youtuberey of it.

And now, my friends, you get to see the FIRST MCCain Campaign meltdown of the General Election...

From TPM:

"It was remarkable to see Barack Obama's hysterical diatribe in response to a speech in which his name wasn't even mentioned. These are serious issues that deserve a serious debate, not the same tired partisan rants we heard today from Senator Obama.

"Senator Obama has pledged to unconditionally meet with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad -- who pledges to wipe Israel off the map, denies the Holocaust, sponsors terrorists, arms America's enemies in Iraq and pursues nuclear weapons. What would Senator Obama talk about with such a man?

"It would be a wonderful thing if we lived in a world where we don't have enemies. But that is not the world we live in, and until Senator Obama understands that, the American people have every reason to doubt whether he has the strength, judgment and determination to keep us safe."
Hysreical... you watch that video and tell me WHERE he was hysterical, and tell me WHEN Obama ever... EVER said we don't have enemies.

This is the best they have.

They got nothing.

Say, I doubt the airline industry is one that would engender any sympathy, but you think it's tough driving out there? Check out the rise in avgas prices that may spell the end of the industry as we know it. From Ask the Pilot:

...Everybody knows the airline business is cyclical. The boom-bust cycle has been playing out since before deregulation. What's different, this time, is how potentially devastating this latest scorching might be, and how quickly it followed on the heels of the post-Sept. 11 industry wipeout. The recovery period was brief, to say the least.

The culprit, obviously, is the price of petroleum. Jim May, president of the Air Transport Association, says that soaring fuel prices are "the worst economic shock since 9/11, and, possibly, one that is worse." The cost of aviation kerosene, i.e., jet fuel, has gone up 70 percent in the past year alone. A week ago oil hit $125 a barrel, and in some corners of the globe a gallon of Jet-A is selling for upward of $6. Five years ago, the average cost per gallon was less than 86 cents. Ten years ago, it was 51 cents. I remember analysts sucking their teeth when the price topped a dollar. Such anxiety seems quaint. In an ATA press release, Dave Emerson, head of the Bain & Co. airline consulting firm, said, "The reality is that there's no U.S. airline that has a sustainable business model if $117-a-barrel oil prices endure." That was $8 per gallon ago, with no end in sight.

According to the International Air Transport Association, the past year's increases have already impacted the world's airlines to the tune of $65 billion. How bad will it get? Nobody knows. There are those who believe that oil will eventually stabilize and begin a backward slide. Considering supply and demand, the fuel-thirsty economies of India and China, etc., I am not one of those people. There's a fair chance that oil will climb past $200 a barrel, at which point the airlines will face massive realignment and consolidation. Google "peak oil" and behold the Armageddon some expect...

CA might have residency requirements, anyway, so it might not even be a valid marriage there unless you live there for a while.

And states vary on whether they will apply FF&C to same sex marriages -- the Constitutional arguments support FF&C (of course), but as we know, THAT's why some are pushing for the amendment...

Hearing a loud noise and interrupting his speech, Huckabee said: "That was Barack Obama. He just tripped off a chair. He's getting ready to speak and somebody aimed a gun at him and he — he dove for the floor."

actually, there's another wrinkle. FF&C doesn't apply if the law in question is totally "against public policy" in the receiving state. The states that don't want to recognize same sex marriages argue that it is so against public policy, and so potentially damaging to the state that they shouldn't have to recognize it just because the other state does. ...and that might be the subject of that case.

The ad may be saying "Tell McCain to fire Black", but what it's really doing is trying to draw a connection between McCain and the despicable acts of those brutal dictators via the scumbag lobbyists that provided them PR. It's the same tactic that McCain and Hillary have used to try to smear Obama with guilt-by-association campaigns. It's swiftboating.

I consider Obama to be above it, and for MoveOn to do this on his behalf indicates to me that they don't really get that he's not that kind of candidate.

I really don't think that McCain or his supporters care that his campaign staff worked PR those despots. So who is this really for? What's the real motive for the ad?

I'd prefer to see ads that attack McCain directly for his policies, words, and actions. There's certainly plenty of material there. These sort of tangential 3 degrees-of-separation smear attacks are unbefittting our party.

McCain is either incoherent, a flip-flopper, or pandering...

I am perfectly happy with the size of my penis so I don't need a gun or a hummer.

And, he sounds a lot like Al Gore in his SNL skit from two years ago (almost to the day).

I couldn't quite get the Gore clips to line up - grr!

They are largely setting up since this is a two-part episode. Martha summoned the Doctor back to Earth for a UNIT assignment investigating a factory where the Sontarans have been replacing the human works as part of their latest plan to invade the earth.

This is the first appearance of the Sontarans since 1985's The Two Doctors.

Ohh, one of the few Old Doctors I've ever seen.

Have they been in any of the new Doctors?

They don't look familiar...

Edit...I am blind...Right, they haven't been seen since then...Still don't recognize them.

The Sontarans previously only appeared in a few of the "original" Doctor Who stories.

The Time Warrior (Jon Pertwee)

The Sontaran Experiment and Invasion of Time (Tom Baker)

The Two Doctors (Colin Baker with special guest Patrick Troughton)

So far the only meeting with an old Doctor and one from the new series was a brief piece in last year's BBC's Children In Need special which had a piece with David Tennant and Peter Davison. The way the new series is done, I think they try to have the new show as a continuation of the old show but not necessarily requiring knowledge of the original series to bring in new viewers.

BTW, Tri, tonight was also supposed to be game 1 of the Subway series and right now this is a season where neither New York Team is doing very well. And you're probably happy, the Yankees are in last place.

That's nice, makes it easier than having some of us watching 17 seasons (series) of old epis.

that being said, I kind of wish they'd do a cross Doctor epi, probably won't happen unless it's 8 or 9 with 10.

And I like Tennant better than Eccelston.

I was more refering to that because this a British show, it's already aired, and if you know the right place to look...not that i know...

Comment by livingonli on 05/17/2008 02:16:42
For the first few seasons, Sci-Fi was always airing the episodes after the BBC had already finished the season. This is the closest we have ever come to seeing new episodes in relative sync with the UK like BBC America with Season Two of Torchwood.

On the other hand, the earliest our neighbors to the north will see Season Four won't be until after the NHL playoffs are finished because CBC devotes nearly the entire spring to Hockey.

Really? All i know that's the only reason i saw most of Season 3 because of that.

Also...that Sarah Jane show sucks...just sayin.

Liv, have you had a chance to watch all the unexpurgated, non-SciFi versions of the Sarah Jane Adventures yet?

It's painful. Unless what they're showing here in the states is edited badly...nothing can save it.

Comment by livingonli on 05/17/2008 02:37:18
And I still wish Rachel got to do worst person. How come none of Keith's fill-ins have ever done worst person in the world? I would think if anyone could follow in Keith's spirit it's Rachel.

Sci-Fi is very heavily chopping them up in order to fit the time slot they have it in with commercials. One of my other co-workers who's a long-time Doctor Who fan has not been impressed either, but I think he's only watched the butchered Sci-Fi episodes.

No, but each episode *is* each supposed to be about twenty-eight minutes long with a cliffhanger for the next ep.

There are a couple of blogs that record all the stuff that SciFi takes out.

I always found it disturbing that i missed the first 5 minutes of that premier episode, and it looked like 10+ minutes of exposition...Maybe I'll look it up in it's full form. But SJA does't look lke hte kind of show i could ever like..

hm...Maybe that'd help the show...I know how editing can destroy a show. (refering to early localization of Anime)

I'll see if i can feel an episode intact and make a full assestment.

Comment by livingonli on 05/17/2008 02:47:40
But does anyone remember watching those early Tom Baker Doctor Who episodes when they first aired in the US and the BBC felt that we needed a narrator (Howard Da Silva) to "explain" what was going on? Thank goodness once enough PBS stations were running the shows, they got rid of those wraps.
