The change they deserve...
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 05/18/2008 13:20:43

Recently the GOP decided they needed a new slogan, after all, the "change" idea seemed to be working for everyone from Obama to Ron Paul. So they came up with something; as New York Times columnist Carl Hulse recently reported:

It looks like Republicans will counter the Democratic push for change from the years of the Bush administration with their own pledge to deliver, drum roll please, "the change you deserve." The first element of the party agenda developed over the past few months by the leadership and select party members will focus on family issues.

"Through our "Change You Deserve" message and through our "American Families Agenda," House Republicans will continue our efforts to speak directly to an American public looking for leaders who will offer real solutions for the challenges they confront every day," said the memo prepared for lawmakers.

"Change You Deserve". Sounds good! Snappy! Right to the point! Powerful! Sounds like........... like some smart ad exec. might have already thought of it!!

Oops!

What the GOP doesn't seem to realize, because they are idiots, is that "the change you deserve" is the registered advertising slogan of Effexor XR, a drug that many of you might have started taking as a result of all the...you know -- terrorism. (Hat tip to Bluestem for catching this gem.)

Effexor, also known as Venlafaxine, is approved for the treatment "of depression, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder in adults." Its common side effects are very much in keeping with the world the House Republicans have striven to build: nausea, apathy, constipation, fatigue, vertigo, sexual dysfunction, sweating, memory loss, and - and I swear I am not making this up - "electric shock-like sensations also called 'brain zaps.'"

Its less common side effects are equally awesome in their appropriateness.

Oops! Poor GOP! They can't seem to get things right very often. As this case in point with the backwards flag. What? You say? What backwards flag?

Well, as reported on HuffPo, it seems that the Boner; he of the Party that complains about "flag pins" and "patriotism", does not understand the flag code and how our flag should be displayed:

http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q151/velveeta_jones/people/bonerbonestheflag.jpg

According to the code:
When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's left. When displayed in a window, the flag should be displayed in the same way, with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street.

Tsk, Tsk!

Velveeta is a firm believer in unity. And in that spirit, I think we should help our friends on the Right come up with a new slogan! Here's a few ideas:

GOP: We're the Good kind of Christians!

Reach out and touch a Republican!

GOP: Now with 3 black people!

GOP: Good Christians only; unless we need your votes in Florida or Ohio!

Republicans: Its our way or the war way!

GOP: We believe in a woman's right to choose: Kitchen or Bedroom?

Republicans: We are so pro marriage we do it over and over and over!

GOP: Its the Gay People, Stupid!

Republicans: Our pundits can shout louder.

Republicans support the troops. We don't play golf! But Wii golf doesn't count, does it? (Thanks to JD for that one!)

GOP: Poverty is for the poor!

The Republican Party: We love you before you're born and as you lay trying to die. In between you're on your own!

GOP: Embryo's before immigrants.

Republicans: Homeskooled!

GOP: Got Bootstraps?

Republicans: When it absolutely, positively has to be done; do it in the bathroom stall!

GOP: Black people are perplexing.

GOP: 100 Billion embryo's strong!

Republicans: We believe! And no amount of "facts" will change our minds.

GOP: We do fear!

Come on people! The GOP needs our help!

And............ for those of you that missed this train wreck last night on SNL. Yikes! John McCain.......... um, someone needs to explain what makes satire funny. You see, you might not want to actually insult, say, your constituents like this. When you really don't bring home money to your State!

You uh, um, well.......... see for yourself:

Mornin' Everybody :coffee:

Great post Velveeta! As a consumer of that particular brand of medication (Effexor XR) I resented the hell out of the GOP trying to bogart that phrase. It literally made me sick every morning when I took my neds. I like your suggestions of slogans that fit better with the GOP mentality - my personal favorite is "Republicans - terrorism you deserve!" Happy Sunday :)

Cheers,

mfaye :D

P.S. I fell asleep before old man McCain did his schtick on SNL - and apparently the video that you posted is no longer available (can anybody say embarrassed?)

The McCain clip is available over on HuffPo. It is not too impressive and not very funny either - two characteristics that I believe SNL is going for...oh well, as far as new slogans go - how about "I have a plan for a GOP victory, do you? Mine is CANADA, what's yours?" A little wordy, but it makes a point :)

Liv,

I'm looking at Vancouver BC - nice temperate climate, liberal views on hemp and other issues that matter to me. Hemp (notorious marijuana's useful cousin) could solve all of our energy problems in just a few years if we started a massive grow campaign, please see VoteHemp.com. Plus you'd have to smoke a bail of the stuff in about 20 seconds and all you'd get is a headache Ah well, got me off in another direction... Hope you have the day off Liv - seems like you work an awful lot

Enjoy your day

Cheer,

Oh, I like that one. It's kind of cool, and the color scheme is real nice.

:thud:

Yeah but is Portland. They are smugly satisfied about how progressive they are. I have a friend who lives there. She says the cult of look at us, we are Portland, we are liberal and great is really annoying.
IT still is an impressive crowd. That looks like anywhere from 40-60 thousand people!

No doubt! I just wanted to slam Portland

My friend in Portland's dad could give you an estimate of the crowd size. When he was with the US Park Police in DC on of his jobs was to go up to the top of the Washington monument and calculate the crowd density. He spent many years disapointing both liberal and conservative groups.

Kos and a few other places are actually saying that was about 75,000 people.

Obamapalooza!

Oh dear... HRC goes to Kentucky to campaign and instead gets a sermon on infedelity.

What was likely less of a treat was Pastor Paul Fryman’s sermon she heard Sunday morning at Bowling Green’s State Street United Methodist Church on marriage and adultery entitled “When the Devil Whispers Over Your Shoulder.”

Pastor Fryman launched into his sermon with Matthew 5, verse 27, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

The verse goes on to say anyone guilty is better off plucking out their eye or cutting off their hand lest they end up in hell.

Clinton did not speak at the service, nor was she recognized at any point from those on the alter, instead sitting quietly in the second pew praying and singing along with the rest of the congregation.

She smiled broadly as a baby was baptized and carried down the aisle by the pastor.

THAT had to be a little uncomfortable...

What is a Libertarian? Gawd, ask me something easier!!! Gotta give that one some thought, but I won't let it die. I'd go so far as to say "Check back next Saturday".

Presidential lifespans....

Emerged from the womb under LBJ, vaguely remember the Carter presidency, became politically aware under Reagan, became a die-hard in 1988 when our hometown governor ran against Papa Bush...became enraged in 2000, horrified in 2001, and ran out of tears after Katrina spun in in '05.

Change the Americans deserve...

you can see the entire interview by going to This Weeks website. It was the best laugh I had all morning. Boner has NOTHING. He said Change Americans deserve 9 times during this interview. George kept asking him WHAT he planned on doing, he answered, we have to bring change americans deserve.

Oh. And he looked like he started tossing back bourbons about 7 in the morning.

The entire interview is a classic.

But it's alright, I was still on the Edwards Bandwagon then, and it was a JOY to listen to him speak... (John has an AWESOME handshake)

I WILL see him when he comes to Georgia in the GE. There are a few rumblings down here that the state may actually do quite well for the Dems this year...

(ahem) Those of ya'll that frequent the SMS live blog:

At a fundraiser last night in Portland that raked in an estimated $350,000 to his campaign coffers, Barack Obama predicted a victory in Oregon, and said he believed the resulting delegate haul would “put us over the top.”

“We will be able to say we have won a majority,” he said. “But we have a lot of work to do ahead of us.”

For Dems to win in November, he said, it will require a unified Party, adding: “That means all of you have to be nice to Clinton supporters.”

After Tuesday there are three more contests.

Heya Random. I've been an actual card-carrying member of the Libertarian Party since 2003.

I recently re-enlisted for another year....but I also recently changed my voter registration here in this Commonwealth. I've been unenrolled since I can't remember when, but I changed back to "Democrat" about two weeks ago especially for this election season. It's just too important not to.

Velveeta may simplify it, but it is indeed Live and let live, or as I'm fond of saying "Do no harm." I will admit it's the foreign policy aspects of the party that first attracted me, falling for that avoiding foreign entanglements bit that was so near and dear to Jefferson's heart.

Then there's all that personal liberty stuff....although I'd like to think that if by your actions you endanger or harm someone else, that should be illegal under a Libertarian society.

I can't say I agree with the free-market stance and elimination of welfare and all that other crunchy liberal stuff that I kinda think we should have. But the LP as a whole agrees pretty closely with a lot of things I believe in...far more so than the two major parties.

Give this a try and see where you might stand...

Still:

LIBERALS usually embrace freedom of choice in personal

matters, but tend to support significant government control of the

economy. They generally support a government-funded "safety net"

to help the disadvantaged, and advocate strict regulation

of business. Liberals tend to favor environmental regulations,

defend civil liberties and free expression, support government action

to promote equality, and tolerate diverse lifestyles.

Your PERSONAL issues Score is 100%.

Your ECONOMIC issues Score is 10%.

Tri, how many NASCAR fans are there in New England? I notice that Comcast Sports New England still airs Around the Track and we don't run that show on our New York regional? There are a number of FSN or FSN-affiliated regional sports networks that take the show but most of them are in areas where NASCAR has a following.

I would imagine there's a fair lot of them in NH and Maine...but in Mass, VT, and Connecticut, not so much. There is the New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, after all. And it is almost Bike Week...
