After hearing the story on last night's Countdown, I was planning on writing about the McK-Street of Dreams, where it's All Lobbyists - All the Time. In case you missed that one, McCain's advisor on economic policy is Phill Gramm, who helped the mortgage companies create and then bail themselves out of the recent mortgage crisis:

Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain’s national campaign general co-chair was being paid by a Swiss bank to lobby Congress about the U.S. mortgage crisis at the same time he was advising McCain about his economic policy, federal records show.

“Countdown with Keith Olbermann” reported Tuesday night that lobbying disclosure forms, filed by the giant Swiss bank UBS, list McCain’s campaign co-chair, former Texas Sen. Phil Gramm, as a lobbyist dealing specifically with legislation regarding the mortgage crisis as recently as Dec. 31, 2007.

Gramm joined the bank in 2002 and had registered as a lobbyist by 2004. UBS filed paperwork deregistering Gramm on April 18 of this year. Gramm continues to serve as a UBS vice chairman.

News of Gramm’s involvement as a paid advocate for the banking industry, simultaneous with his unpaid work on McCain’s economic policies, comes as McCain’s campaign continues to reel from the purge of four other lobbyists. Two weeks ago, McCain banned lobbyists from advising him on the same subjects covered by their lobbying work.
....
When Gramm chaired the Senate Banking Committee, he wrote and passed deregulatory legislation in more than one industry, establishing himself as a pre-eminent foe of government regulation. McCain’s March 26 speech recommended further deregulation of the banking industry as his response to the mortgage crisis.
....
In 1999, Gramm successfully undid the Depression-era Glass-Steagall Act, removing the decades-old wall between commercial banking, which was heavily regulated, and investment banking, which was not. The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act did not extend significant new regulation to investment banking.

This is huge. McCain has said that he knows little about the economy and his taking advice from this economic Typhoid Mary is proof of it...

Speaking of McCain: Another story bubbled to the surface yesterday (we're waiting for it to break open) regarding McCain's involvement with a SmearBoat group known as "Vets For Freedom" (as opposed to the other kind that are against freedom? ). As reported by Raine yesterday, there are several prominent people that are involved in his campaign that are also members of this 527 group, including:
Senators Lindsay Graham and Joe Lieberman, both campaign co-chairman, also both sit on the Vets for Freedom board of advisors. The group's executive director, Pete Hegseth, is on McCain's Virginia steering committee along with the group's treasurer, Wade Zirkle.

More information here... Is this even legal? Can a campaign that is subject to campaign finance laws share personnel that belong to a 527 that does NOT have campaign finance restrictions?

Speaking of the Iraq War: Bush actually tried to compare it to WWII:
"America has assumed this obligation before," Bush said in prepared remarks released by the White House. "After World War II we helped Germany and Japan build free societies and strong economies. These efforts took time and patience, and as a result Germany and Japan grew in freedom and prosperity and are now allies of the United States."

The result, Bush says, was "generations of security and peace" in the United States.

"Today we must do the same in Afghanistan and Iraq," he says in the prepared comments. "And by helping these young democracies grow in freedom and prosperity we will once again reap the benefits in generations of security and peace."

Today's wars aren't over yet. As reconstruction unfolds, the enemy keeps fighting — not national militaries but a complex mix of militias and terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Another difference: It remains in debate within the country whether the pre-emptive Iraq war has bolstered U.S. security or weakened it. Bush has expressed no doubts it was warranted.

This comes 2 months after Bush made his stupid comments about how the Iraq War is "Romantic", and he was envious of those fighting in it. This really bolsters the notion (okay - the reality) that he is a delusional idiot.

Speaking of delusional: When Cynthia McKinney was a House Rep, there were plenty of people that said the same thing about her. In reality, she was an "uppity" black woman who didn't "know her place" and spoke out against Bush when he was riding an undeserved wave of popular support in the early post 9/11 days. With the help of Republicans, she was drummed out of her seat in the GA primary (an open primary). I've met her and listened to her speak; she is intelligent, compassionate and passionate, driven, and actually cares about her country. That's why the Republicans hated her and the Dems were scared of her.

These traits are likely what has gotten her where she is today: She is the presumptive nominee for president for the Green Party. The party that Nader helped bring to national attention (and helped Gore lose in 2000) has welcomed her and hoisted her upon their shoulders. Will she do to the 2008 election what Nader did in 2000? I guess it depends on how disgruntled certain Dem voters will be if their candidate of choice is not selected as the Dem candidate. Obama supporters and Clinton supporters now have the opportunity to vote for a black AND a woman all in one. If they don't want to vote Dem, they'll have an option other than McCain.

This could get interesting.

Mornin' Everybody,

Excellent post BobR - I sat down after work last night and was dumbfounded by KO's report on Gramm. As for Cynthis McKinney - I hope against hope that all the Kyles of the country don't seriously consider voting for her - no matter how passionate and intelligent she may be - she cannot win - and a Dem win is a must for America if we are to survive as a nation that is founded on liberty and justice for all. Obama all the way :D

Cheers,

mfaye

So wait just a second here.. there's a possibility that the candidates for president might be:

Republican: John McCain

Democrat: Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton (just sayin.. a slim chance)

Libertarian: Bob Barr

Green: Cynthia McKinney

Independent: Ralph Nader

What the hell.. when did the minor parties get infested with the same junk that has plagued the two mainstream parties?!

Keep in mind though that it's the political/military leaders of China that are the cause of all the grief in Tibet, not the poor common folk most affected by the quake.

I also don't think that plate tectonics are related to karma in any way. It's a matter of geography. A more appropriate karma "response" would be the people rising up and throwing the bums out of office, or the leaders being poisoned from drinking contaminated water (because they allowed the contamination to occur), etc.

In a larger sense, I was comparing the "they are being punished for their wickedness" meme, whether it's by God or by the universe. I think it's a bad idea to assume one's self is that knowledgeable as to those finer details

Barak tells Olmert: Quit or face elections

By Ofra Edelman and Tomer Zarchin, Haaretz Correspondents, and Agencies

Tags: Ehud Barak, Morris Talansky

Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Wednesday called on Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to leave his post or prepare for early elections, saying he did not believe the premier was capable of simultaneously leading the country and dealing with his personal matters.

The call comes a day after Jewish American businessman Morris Talansky told a preliminary hearing at Jerusalem Magistrates Court on Tuesday that he gave Olmert $150,000 over a period of 15 years. The testimony is part of an investigation into Olmert, who is suspected of illegally receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars from Talansky.

"I do not think the prime minister can run, in parallel, the government and deal with his own personal affair," Barak told a news conference at the Knesset press room in Jerusalem on Wednesday.

"Therefore, out of a sense of what is good for the country and in accordance with the proper norms, I think the prime minister must disconnect himself from the daily running of the government.

Hmm, so I wonder if we will see BARACK Obama and Ehud BARAK meet next year if both gain the leadership of their respective countries. Hmm, Barack meets Barak.

Random, I do agree with you about her trying. There is right now, I think it is going to happen today a lawsuit that will be heard in Florida regarding the delegates... YES, a lawsuit... after watching *Recount* last night it makes it all more appalling to me.

if the suit goes the way of the plaintiffs, it will make the DNC rulles committee this weekend rather moot.

It's sad that we'd destroy structure and rules, just to win. And the B.S. that goes with it.

This new talking point about the Obama Great-Uncle mistake is kind of lame.

IT is very lame - I have a great aunt name Gussie who is about 94. (No one is sure, as the records were not that great in Eastern Europe at the time.) Sometimes, I call her AUNT Gussie when I talk about her - especially to older relatives.

So, how is this more significant than John McCain's ties to lobbyists, Gramm's influence on McCain's housing policy, or McCain's confusing of Sunni with Shia?

Strawmanning at it very best.

=====================================================

Carefully presenting and refuting a weakened form of an opponent's argument is not always itself a fallacy. It can refocus the scope of an argument or be a legitimate step of a proof by exhaustion. In contrast the straw man fallacy occurs in the following pattern:

1. Person A has position X.

2. Person B ignores X and instead presents position Y. Y is a distorted version of X and can be set up in several ways, including:

Presenting a misrepresentation of the opponent's position and then refuting it, thus giving the appearance that the opponent's actual position has been refuted.

Quoting an opponent's words out of context -- i.e., choosing quotations that are not representative of the opponent's actual intentions (see contextomy and quote mining).

Presenting someone who defends a position poorly as the defender and then refuting that person's arguments, thus giving the appearance that every upholder of that position, and thus the position itself, has been defeated.

Inventing a fictitious persona with actions or beliefs that are criticized, such that the person represents a group of whom the speaker is critical.

Oversimplifying an opponent's argument, then attacking the simplified version.

3. Person B attacks position Y.

4. Person B draws a conclusion that X is false/incorrect/flawed. This sort of "reasoning" is fallacious because attacking a distorted version of a position simply does not constitute an attack on the position itself.

John Bolton to be target of citizen's arrest at Hay Festival

By Stephen Adams, Arts Correspondent

John Bolton, the former US ambassador to the United Nations, faces a citizen's arrest when he addresses an audience at the Hay Festival in Wales this evening.

George Monbiot, the journalist and activist, is planning the action because he believes Mr Bolton is a "war criminal".

He said he was surprised that Mr Bolton would be allowed to "swim through the politest of polite soirees – which is of course Hay."

Mr Bolton, who was the American ambassador to the UN from August 2005 to January 2006, is due to talk at the Hay-on-Wye literary festival at 6.30pm on international relations.

Crossing Jordan: Iraq fuel deal sparks lawsuit

Exclusive

By Aram Roston

Investigative producer

NBC News

updated 5:32 a.m. CT, Wed., May. 28, 2008

A little-noticed civil lawsuit in Florida is shining a light on an unusual but hugely profitable Pentagon contract to ship millions of gallons of aviation fuel to U.S. bases in Iraq through the kingdom of Jordan.

The deal involves a cast of influential characters, including the king of Jordan’s brother-in-law, who is suing Harry Sargeant III, a top Florida-based fundraiser for Sen. John McCain's presidential bid.

Sargeant is a Florida businessman and former Marine Corps pilot hailed by the McCain campaign as a "Trailblazer" for raising $100,000 or more in political donations. Through a company called International Oil Trading Co., or IOTC, Sargeant and a partner have a lucrative contract worth hundreds of millions of dollars per year to supply American military forces in Iraq with fuel, especially aviation fuel. The firm ships the fuel to Jordan and then trucks it across the border, where U.S. forces escort the convoys to air bases.

The conflicts of interest here in this story remind me of some of the tactics of Chicago politicians - IOTC was the ONLY company that could meet the criteria of the contract.

So if they are NOW only to seat half of the delegates, that makes her worse off than before. I think.

The interesting thing about the next batch of movies is how they are supposed to lead up. Robert Downey Jr. makes a cameo as Tony Stark in the new Hulk movie (they are acting as if the Ang Lee movie didn't happen)..

Then coming down the pike there will be a Captain America movie, a Thor movie, a Nick Fury movie (with Samuel Jackson this time playing the Agent of SHIELD), Iron Man II and they will eventually lead up to an Avengers movie.

More election news.

There is an interesting story from the Associated Press showing that McCain's base of support is not as strong as it seems.

Obama competitive against McCain with key voters

By ALAN FRAM

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Barack Obama has done poorly in the Democratic primaries with women, Catholics and others who will be pivotal in this fall's presidential election. Yet early polling shows that with several of these groups, he's competitive when matched against Republican John McCain.

A look at voters who have been closely contested in recent presidential elections - or veered from one party to the other, making them true swing groups - shows a significant number have leaned toward Obama's rival, Hillary Rodham Clinton, in the primaries. Besides women and Catholics, these include the elderly, the less educated and suburbanites, leading Clinton to argue that this makes her the Democrats' stronger candidate for the fall campaign.

Yet Obama's performance with these voters in the primaries doesn't necessarily mean he'd do poorly with them in the general election, assuming he nails down the last few convention delegates he needs to win the nomination.

I posted this over at UNN and Steph's blog, where the battle continues among Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama supporters. (I do not like the primitive technical level of the blog there - can't post long urls without them stretching over the page - or some of the tone.)

From Today's AJC... regarding Puffy's Book...

The book recounts an evening in a hotel suite "somewhere in the Midwest." Bush was on the phone with a supporter and motioned for McClellan to have a seat.

"'The media won't let go of these ridiculous cocaine rumors,' I heard Bush say. 'You know, the truth is I honestly don't remember whether I tried it or not. We had some pretty wild parties back in the day, and I just don't remember.'"

"I remember thinking to myself, How can that be?" McClellan wrote. "How can someone simply not remember whether or not they used an illegal substance like cocaine? It didn't make a lot of sense."

Bush, according to McClellan, "isn't the kind of person to flat-out lie."

"So I think he meant what he said in that conversation about cocaine. It's the first time when I felt I was witnessing Bush convincing himself to believe something that probably was not true, and that, deep down, he knew was not true," McClellan wrote. "And his reason for doing so is fairly obvious — political convenience."

In the years that followed, McClellan "would come to believe that sometimes he convinces himself to believe what suits his needs at the moment." McClellan likened it to a witness who resorts to "I do not recall."

"Bush, similarly, has a way of falling back on the hazy memory to protect himself from potential political embarrassment," McClellan wrote, adding, "In other words, being evasive is not the same as lying in Bush's mind."

And McClellan linked the tactic to the decision to invade Iraq, a decision based on flawed intelligence.

"It would not be the last time Bush mishandled potential controversy," he said of the cocaine rumors. "But the cases to come would involve the public trust, and the failure to deal with them early, directly and head-on would lead to far greater suspicion and far more destructive partisan warfare," he wrote.

At least we NOW KNOW that Bush was at parties where Plenty of this was happening. ;)

The fact that he doesn't know whether or not is stunningly scary . So which is it Puffy? Did you lie for a man that can't recall?

There's a lot of fuzzy math there. It also ignores the fact that Obama got more votes in most states than McCain did. I really wonder how many states McCain will actually win. I predict a blowout.

I read that not so much that Bush can't remember, it's that he purposely is repressing the memory, perhaps consciously so. It's almost a deliberate pyschosis.

In order to not remember whether or not he did it, Bush must have done a lot of blow. I really have to wonder not only that he's psychotic but apparently his heavy intake of substances during his "youthful indiscretion" years may have caused brain damage.

If Bush can't be impeached, can we at least invoke the 26th Amendment to argue that Bush should be removed on the ground that he is mentally unfit to hold office.

The trollish behavior of the three stooges (clay, DRII and SMH) really needs to be put in check. It's one thing to be a Hillary supporter, but it's another to be so off the rails and to have every troll be an insult on anyone who doesn't agree with their view that Hillary should be crowned queen and anoited as the next president while at least one may be on the Operation Chaos plan and would switch to McCain even if Hillary got the nod.

MoDo had a very interesting column today. Basically, it is questioning if BILL is ready for Hillary to be VP. here is a snippet:

“Mr. President, I’m going to run a very transparent administration, everything on C-Span. So I’ll need a full accounting of your foundation donors.”

“Oh, sure thing, buddy, from this day forward.”

“No, Bill, we’ll need full disclosure of your business dealings for the last eight years. And you can no longer accept Arab millions — not if I’m going to talk tough to them about oil. I can’t send Hillary on diplomatic missions to the Middle East if you’re taking money from Dubai and Kuwait. And no more trips to Kazakhstan. I wouldn’t want to have to put a Geiger-counter bracelet on you to check that you’re not involved in another shady uranium deal.”

“Ha, ha.”

“We need to know where that $11 million came from that you guys loaned your campaign. And the $15 million from Ron Burkle at Yucaipa and the $3 million from Vinod Gupta. And you must spill about any offshore accounts in the Caymans. And no more big-money speeches, Bill. You guys have already cashed in for more than $100 million.”

“You’re right, Barack, no more speeches. Just conversations. If a C.E.O. interviews me in front of a small audience, that’s fine. But no speeches.”

“I’m not debating the meaning of the word ‘speech,’ Bill. We’re going to have an administration so squeaky clean that it makes Jimmy Carter look like Marc Rich. All your trips abroad will have to be authorized by a higher authority.”

“The State Department? Fine, I’ll check with them.”

“Higher.”

“Oh, no. Not that.”

“Yes, Michelle. She’ll have you on a much shorter leash, Bill, and it’s not so fun. There’ll be no more Ron Air, no Burkling and Binging. Eight long years of Michelle watching your every move. No eruptions of any kind. And that big telescope in the Naval Observatory is off limits. We’re going to be a family-values administration. And in the campaign, we’ll use you the way Al Gore did: Not at all. No more Bill YouTube meltdowns.”

Mike Malloy is ranting on Dunkin' Donuts for their cowardice. He says the coffee tastes like urine.

just got done watching LKL! only the segment with Momma... I was FLOORED that Kiki Davis said that Scott McClellan should be ashamed of what he did by writing that book. Stunned actually. I suspect Shane-O will have the youtubery of it for everyone tomorrow, and Momma was REALLY great tonite, but kiki just made me cringe.

Seriously, cringe.

Chummy McSharkbait's book was a topic on KO last night. I was floored by the way he threw Bush under the bus. Of all the former members of the crime cabal that is the Bush administration, I never thought the Malomar addict would trash his boss.

Kiki needs a zetz in the tucus. I don't even know who the hell she is. McClellen should be ashamed of what he did? Coming clean about the lies and crap that he helped sell? Good on ya Scotty is what I think!

Human Events is hilarious! Check this howler out:

That as a government-protected monopoly the U.S. Postal Service can jack up postal rates as much as they want whenever they want, without worrying about free-market competition is outrageous enough. But what really burns me up is that this postage hike was engineered in part by lobbyists for liberal media giant Time Warner and other large publishers to benefit themselves at the expense of smaller, conservative operations such as HUMAN EVENTS.

  Yeah the liberal media lobbied to do damage to poor Human Events. : wipes tears of mirth from eyes:

How about the same thing that happening to ohhh I dunno, THE NATION!

Wasn't it the turd over at Murdoch's Weekly Standard who basically admitted that the "Liberal Media" is just a slogan they throw around so that the M$M will do its bidding?

My bad, I got her last name wrong.. it was Kiki Mclean, not davis, who is a Senior Campaign advisor to the HRC campaign.

That would be why I was stunned.
