How High is the Water Momma?
Author: Raine    Date: 06/19/2008 12:50:54

Good morning. Today the pResident will take a tour of the Midwest. So will the man who wants to be President. But don't worry, They won't been seen together. McCain wouldn't want you to think he is like a third term of *ush, you know.
The debate about whether Senator John McCain is “McBush’’ continues, but on Thursday one thing will be clear: The presumptive Republican nominee and President Bush will be in Iowa touring areas hard hit by floods.

Mr. McCain’s campaign said on Wednesday that he had decided to cancel a town-hall-style meeting in Minnesota on Thursday morning and visit Columbus Junction, a city of fewer than 2,000 residents. [...]

The McCain campaign said that it was not trying to step on Mr. Bush’s trip and that the two men’s paths would not cross. “We’re not going within 30 miles of the city he’s in,’’ said Charles Black, one of Mr. McCain’s senior advisers.

OK, we get it Johnny, you are just LIKE *ush. I took a look at John McCain's website and saw nothing about the Flooding disaster anywhere. In the meantime the Barack Obama campaign has mobilized itself to get relief to the victims of this disaster; it is telling the stark differences between the two. Obama is doing what he promised, he is mobilizing people from the ground up to help each other. And Bush and McCain are just getting around to touring the area. To see how you can help go to Obama's Website.

Also, please visit The Red Cross. Our own 4F Family member, Velveeta Jones, is on the ground in the midwest helping out. They have a dangerously low disaster relief fund. We love her for all she does.

Speaking of assistance and disaster relief, this is something that I find highly disturbing. During his briefing to the press, pResident *ush said the following:
Now that the water is beginning to recede, the question is, how do we help with the recovery? And Secretary Chertoff briefed me on plans, particularly when it comes to housing. A lot of people are going to be wondering, is there short-term help for housing? And there is, and we'll provide that help.

Secondly, what's going to happen in the long term to the homes? And so Michael is going to set up a housing task force similar to the kind we set up in California for the wildfires, to work with state and local authorities to have an orderly strategy to help people get back in their homes.

I fully understand people are upset when they lose their home. A person's home is their most valued possession. And we want to work with state and local folks to have a clear strategy to help people find -- get back into a place that -- where they can live.
[...]
And finally, Director Nussle is here from the Budget Office. We've got what we called a Disaster Relief Fund. There's enough money in that fund to take care of this disaster. But what we're concerned about is future disasters this year. And therefore, we're going to work with the Congress. Jim Nussle is going to go up to work with Congress to get enough money in the upcoming supplemental to make sure that fund is -- has got enough money to deal with a potential disaster, another disaster this year.

Congress doesn't need to worry about working with the White House on this, because we think the supplemental is the way to go. What they do need to worry about is making sure that there is enough but not too much money in the fund, so we can say we have done our job.
The waters are not receding in the Mississippi river. They may have receded north, but this is not over. I am concerned about housing, considering we still have people homeless from Katrina thanks to the failed *efforts* of FEMA. Just last week, CNN reported, that FEMA gave away 85 million dollars worth of disaster relief suppies that were supposed to go to Katrina survivors. Since then some of it has been recovered, but the reality is that FEMA sat on, and then gave away to local states and counties (schools, prisons etc.) the very things people need when they lose thier homes: dinnerwear, cots, coffee makers, toilet paper,... the basics. And Now we have *ush say that we have enough money for this disaster, but not for another.

Let me ask this, do we have trailers yet? I think we are still waiting for them. FEMA doesn't have a long term disaster plan. If they did, we would not have to have the pResident to say that we 'WILL' be setting up a long term housing task force.

Now, when *ush tells us that there is enough money in the Disaster relief fund for ONLY this disaster, he is deeper in the bullshit than the silt left behind from the flooding. There is no way to tell how much this is going to cost, especially when the floodwaters are still rising. And when *ush tell congress to attach it to the upcoming supplemental, be very wary of those code words. He wants as much money as he can get, attached to the upcoming vote of the war funding. Remember also that for the federal government the fiscal year ends on September 30.

I have spent the past day or so looking for the Disaster Relief Budget numbers. I cannot find them, bu I did find this.
From FEMA's website:

A $100 million increase for FEMA’s Vision Initiatives, including staffing increases, new technologies, and targeted investment in equipment and supplies that will support emergency management efforts across preparedness, protection, response, and recovery.
The transfer of $48 million from the Disaster Relief Fund to the Operations, Planning and Support account to convert FEMA’s Cadre of On-Call Response Employee (CORE) positions with 4-year terms into permanent full-time employees.
They took money OUT of the disaster relief fund.

And there is this information from the FY 2007:
The U.S. Office of Management and Budget released their FY 2007 disaster prevention and disaster relief budget:
    • Pre-disaster mitigation grants total of $100 million, up $50 million from FY 2006
    • $3.1 billion will go toward FEMA activities, a $363 million increase in FEMA spending from FY 2006
    • An additional $1.94 billion allocated for a disaster-relief fund to cover the costs disaster response and disaster recovery contracts, a $189 million increase from FY 2006
    • An additional $70 million will go toward additional disaster prevention and disaster relief contract funding

So where is the money? *ush doesn't know. He cannot possibly know, but he sure as hell wants to tangle up the relief for Americans at home by using them as pawns to get his money for more war.

How High is the Water Momma? About as deep as the crap this administration is feeding us.

:peace: and
Raine

Ahem...

Rush, people in Iowa aren't whining "Where's FEMA", and "Where's Bush" because Katrina conclusively showed that they don't give a flying fuck, so the people in Iowa are smart enough not to expect any help.

Comment by livingonli on 06/19/2008 14:01:07
It seems that the problem today is companies are just looking for the big profit. They don't want to try anything new or take chances by being innovative. They will just stick with the tried and true. This is why auto-makers have thought more fuel efficient cars and why oil companies don't want to invest in alternative energies.

Excellent post Raine. As a complete non-sequitor, you may want to venture over to my blog - I blogged on a topic that really gets my goat ("pharmacists" who refuse to fill prescriptions that don't agree with their religious beliefs). I saw a story in the WaPo on Monday that described how these charlatans are planning on establishing a chain of religiously-limited drug stores. Comments welcome. Have a great day everybody.

Cheers,

You know, there is another issue to this as well. Many of the innovations, inventions and solutions as it were, have had the patents bought up by big corporations that feel threatened by said solution, and then the patent is locked away in a safe, never to be seen again.

The electric car was a good example of a company actually letting the cat OUT of the bag, and then killing the cat... now they just don't let it happen at all.

So caller is wrong, the things are out there and it is more than just over regulation. it is corporatism that is preventing things from really changing.

The problem is not that there are problems. The problem is expecting otherwise and thinking that having problems is a problem.

When asked, on The View why the Media "goes after spouses," Michelle gave her opinion that it is because there is a lot of "space to fill" now that the Primaries are over. Jim Webb also gave that arguement when asked about his name being floated as a possible Veep pick.

I would like to take issue with that fact. There should never be "space to fill." There is news worth reporting every single day. I would like to see the Corporate Media start reporting on issues/news of the day, rather than filling airtime with speculation and spousal criticism.

I think it's because Libertarianism seems to be associated with the Ayn Rand/Grover Norquist school of thought which is just privatize everything and no regulations on corporations. Although these so-called "Libertarians" are not above supporting more oppressive laws for people (especially poor ones).

Well, that's just the thing about Libertarianism...it's a mighty big tent.

There's room at one end for the "drown government in a bathtub" types (which garners all the media focus, btw), but there's also room at my end of the tent for the "live and let live, do no harm" types.

It was the foreign policy aspects that initially attracted me to the party, though.

My guiding principle in all of this is unless and until something puts another person at risk, there shouldn't necessarily be a regulation or a law about it.

Which in my fuzzy bunny and chirping bird part of libland would keep consumer regulations, safety requirements and things like that while leaving most other things the hell alone, like abortion, drugs, marriage, etc...

If the oil futures speculation bubble breaks, the cost could come down. It's up to congress to try to make that happen by re-regulating the industry and/or eliminate the "enron loophole".

Paulville

From the www.paulville.org website:

"The goal of Paulville.org it to establish gated communities containing 100% Ron Paul supporters and or People that live by the ideals of freedom and liberty.

The process is forming a co-op of people buying shares in the community and these people would be granted land use at a minimum of 1 acre per share. for as long as they homesteaded the land. The community would be privately held by the co-op to establish private property for the general community thus preserving the community is 100% freedom and liberty lovers. The community votes on all community efforts, such as utilities etc. However no one is forced to consume these utilities and or pay for them, AKA people can be off grid on there share of land. This is in line with the ideals that your free to live your life the way you want and not be forced to do or pay for other people life styles you may not agree with.

These communities are not for the faint at heard they will start as undeveloped land in non city locals, as this is the way to secure large tracts of land needed for these efforts.

However the goal is a minimal financial outlay of around $500 per share to establish this community.

If your interested and willing to attempt to literally change the world one community at a time then please Join us if your interested.

By signing up your just showing true interest in this project and under no obligation to commit to any obligations."

I have to go and do some work around the house for a few hours. (I love mowing - NOT, but it has to be done.)

Here are a few thoughts.

In any movement to create lasting change, there are often going to be very diverse groups involved. Such was the case in the New Deal coalition, the Civil Rights Movement, and the groups protesting against the Vietnam War.

I may pretty much disagree with everything Pat Buchanan says, seeing him as an apologist for power hungry tyrants, a 15th rate historian on a good day, and a man who always assumes the worst of others but takes umbrage when others do the same for him. Yet, I will agree tht he does have a case for his opposition to the war in Iraq.

I am not a Libertarian, but I do agree that the personal and private activities of consenting adults should be their affair - so long as no one is harmed and that the activities are consensual.

Let's remember, what unites us as human beings is ultimately more powerful than what divides us. Let us also remember the words of the man I consider the wisest of our Founding Fathers, a man who helped start the abolition movement in the United States, Benjamin Franklin during the early days of this Republic:

"We must all hang together, or we shall most assuredly all hang separtely."

I think many of our Founding Fathers would be pleased at much of what we have achieved, but alarmed about other things such as the extent of corporate power and the treatment of habeas corpus. Let's remember that even despite the vast divides among the Founding Fathers, they were able to come up with wonderful documents called the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. They also had the wisdom to put in means to amend the Constitution, realizing that conditions can change and that people will come together to stand on issues of concern to them. In these troubling time, let us take counsel with each other and try to stand together when we can.

I'm beginning to think that he's starting to develop Alzheimer's. The only way they can pitch that is by reminding people that Reagan was senile during most of his second term.

It seems like if not McCain, any other candidate will probably be another wingnut who would also be campaigning on continuing Bush's policies. And there could very well be a split by people going to Ron Paul/Bob Barr.

DRII and the other Hillary "supporters" (for want of a better name to call them) are gone, but will probably show up again if Obama stumbles. I'm sure they'll reappear as we get close to the convention.

Seems the noise quotient at SMS increased the closer we got to the end of the primary season, and it died out when Hillary "conceded". Only one who seems to have stuck around is Clay, and he seems to truly want the party to unify.

That is really good to hear , regarding Clay. Truthfully.

Yaron is just so wrong it stuns me. Sorry, These are the guys who give libertarianism a bad name.

Donnie (DRII) always seemed to be around forever. I certainly remember him calling in to the show for awhile. That aside, who needs DRII when you've got plenty of people to imitate him and mock him.

When I came home I found one of the felines had puked on the sofa. Didn't know which one it was, then just before my wife came home, Cleo puked three times on the floor. She must have been the one who did the sofa. Poor little girl :(

Does anyone know a surefire way to sleep in class without getting caught?

It involves astral projection and a parallel universe cross over, kind of more trouble than it's worth. I know for sure you can't be a snorer or a drooler.

proof of how to never underestimate a cat's ability to look really evil and REALLY cute at the same time

Comment by trojanrabbit on 06/19/2008 23:22:35
We had just gotten her from the shelter about a week after we lost our 14 year old cat Buddy from cancer. We were surprised she even ventured out this far.

What we didn't know was that the previous owner was mistreating her - he was hitting her with his cane.

Now after a year and a half of TLC she's a little sweetheart.

Kitty! Is Cleo wondering where the food is? Although if Cleio puked, it may not be so hungry.

Comment by trojanrabbit on 06/19/2008 23:25:51
I'm thinking it's just a furball. Both cats have plenty of food.

you make the assumption that the two are mutually exclusive. I tend to find that the more beauty there is...the more evil there is.

Obama Remarks on Detainees and Afghanistan

I may not agree with him 100% but WOW - McCain has bitten off more than he can chew I think . . .

(I like it!)

Buddy was our first cat, and since he was an only cat for most of his life he was absolutely spoiled rotten.

Whenever I hear Jim supposedly do Mama's Dodge Dart, I cringe. Chryslers do NOT sound like that, they have a distinctive starter, even when the battery's run down.

We visited some friends in Montgomery a long time ago, and when we left they held the camcorder while we started the car and drove away (then came back for the camcorder). Whenever we played that video, when the car "started" Buddy would freak out, I think he thought he was in the car. As a kitten he used to love going for rides, until one day he was left at the vet and he came home an "it".

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.
