“Now, you want me to tell you my opinion on autism, since I'm not talking about autism? A fraud, a racket. For a long while, we were hearing that every minority child had asthma. Why did they sudden -- why was there an asthma epidemic amongst minority children? Because I'll tell you why: The children got extra welfare if they were disabled, and they got extra help in school. It was a money racket. Everyone went in and was told [fake cough], "When the nurse looks at you, you go [fake cough], 'I don't know, the dust got me.' " See, everyone had asthma from the minority community. That was number one.
Now, the illness du jour is autism. You know what autism is? I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is.
What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, "Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot."
Autism -- everybody has an illness. If I behaved like a fool, my father called me a fool. And he said to me, "Don't behave like a fool." The worst thing he said -- "Don't behave like a fool. Don't be anybody's dummy. Don't sound like an idiot. Don't act like a girl. Don't cry." That's what I was raised with. That's what you should raise your children with. Stop with the sensitivity training. You're turning your son into a girl, and you're turning your nation into a nation of losers and beaten men. That's why we have the politicians we have.”
Children's asthma is associated with reduced parental employment among single parents and increased welfare receipt among single- and 2-parent families. These associations with children's asthma may have implications for policy makers interested in increasing employment and decreasing welfare use.

I am with Ms.on this one. I don't know enough about it, necessarily...however, I think of late there is an overwhelmingly rapid move to medicate/diagnosis kids with Autism, ADD, ADHD, etc.
My concern is always that the children who really need the help, get it. And, it makes it difficult when there are seemingly a lot parents who are too quick to assert that their child has a "problem."
Not all parents Clinster!! Not all...at all.... Some kids really do need professional/medical help.
It's just been my observation. . . I was in the education system for a few years during college.
Clintster, I am going to check out those links you posted.

The principal, the home room teacher, all his other teachers, and his parents thought he was fine and thought testing would be unnescessary.
Sometimes I think that some teachers jump too soon to say there is something wrong with a kid instead of looking to see if there isn't something wrong in the way they are teaching a kid.

Yes, that was my point too exactly.
I was a student teacher in an inner city school system. . . and it was always "OH, he is a behavior problem." " Or, she is slow to learn." Etc, etc, etc.
Really? Because when I sit with him and give him 1 on 1 help and he actually is engaged in his task, his "Behavior Problem" doesn't exist. MAYBE HE'S BORED WITH YOUR LACKLUSTER TEACHING STYLE!!!

This is another thing...vaccines. Again, virtue lies in the middle. There are some that are necessary. But, I look at some parents today who may as well wrap their kid in anti-microbial bubble wrap when they leave the house.
When I was a kid there was no Anti-Bacterial soap. There were Flinstone Vitamins. That was your safeguard against the big, bad world. We got dirty. We wiped our noses on our sleeves. We got skinned knees. We got the Chicken Pox! It was a right of passage. But, we were never really that sick.
Maybe....just maybe....it's just a theory....if you expose your kids to some germs that won't constantly be sick!!!

They no longer use it because it is bad. My post didn't address any other subject, not autism, not other spectrum disorders not current vaccines preservatives. I did read that piece. No reason to condescend.
WTF is with the "nice try?" I wasn't trying anything, just a little comment about thimerisol having mercury in it.

VJ, I take the opposite opinion. There is nothing in the environment/drugs causing autism. Since it is a spectrum disorder, there are more diagnoses on the spectrum. Hence, statistical increase in autism. Skeptical Inquierer did a great article on this very subject.

Hello again.....just chiming in on the vaccine thing.
Most of you know that young Javier was born on the island of Luzon in the Philppines. (we adopted him at age 7 months).
Being unwanted by his birth mother, and spending the first few months of his life in an orphanage resulted in very fragmentary medical records from Manila. We don't know what (if any) vaccines he may have received there, so his pediatrician recommended the full treatment once we got him to the US.
This was before I really knew much about thimerisol (2002) and despite it being banned from 2000, I can't help but think that the more I learn about it, the more we may have dodged a bullet. There is a possibility (however slight) that Javi got 'double vaccinated' for some things.

This sounds so outrageous, it seems like a joke or something out of "The Onion."
Attorney General Michael Mukasey is demanding that Congress issue a new declaration of war so that anyone that this president or the next one declares to be an "enemy combatant" can be held indefinitely without a trial.
The new declaration of war would make the entire globe — including the United States itself — a “battlefield” where the president decides who will be locked up forever.
With only five weeks left in the Congressional schedule and only six months left in the Bush presidency, Mukasey’s ridiculous power grab should be laughed out of town. But given this Congress’ track record, the Mukasey proposal is no laughing matter. Especially because it also includes a cover-up of the Bush administration’s systemic torture and abuse of detainees.
We can’t take for granted that Congress will reject this outrageous proposal. We have to meet it with an immediate wall of protest that says to Congress: “Don’t you dare.”
I just told my members of Congress to reject the dangerous Bush/Mukasey plan. You can do the same thing here:
http://action.aclu.org/mukasey
. . ."In language virtually indentical to that in the Senate bill that passed earlier this month, the House bill — which I received via e-mail but could not find online — requires any “loan originator” to “furnish” to the newly created Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry “information concerning the applicant’s identity, including fingerprints,” that will be sent to the FBI and other government agencies. “Loan originator” is defined broadly as anyone who “takes a residential loan application; and offers or negotiates terms of a residential mortgage loan for compensation or gain.” Real estate agents are also covered if they receive any type of compensation from “originators.”. . .

I see your point Capt. I absolutely do. But, when it comes to products and frivilous purchases, we've got to accept the responsibility there.
For example, everyone who ran out and spent $600 on the first iPhone and then complained about the issues they had with it, etc. I think a phone that expensive should work flawlessly and make me coffee in the morning. But, I know it won't. And, I wonder why others don't.
I'm rambling and maybe sound like a judgemental prick. I just want to stress the distinction between someone who is disappointed with their new fancy phone and someone that got manipulated into a mortgage that didn't fit.

I've got the cough/sore throat/respiratory infection that has been going around the liberry crew, so I completely missed Steph this morning - thank goodness for the StephCast. Everybody else who's had this thing has had to go to the doctor for anti-biotics, but I hate to take anti-biotics (there are very few I can take anyway, 'cause I'm allergic to penicillin and sulfa
). Anyway, I heard a great interview with Janis Ian on the radio while I was drifting in and out of consciousness - she has a new book out - "Society's Child." Sounds interesting... That's all for me today - gonna head back to bed...
Carry on, kids![]()
Cheers,

Seems to me, that Fanny and Freddy -- when they were PRIVATIZED was when things went screwy.
Raine, Freddy and Fanny have always been public companies, government backed though. Since they hold together something over half of all the mortgages in the country, them going belly up would be...bad.
Speaking of other government backed companies, they include things like NPR and CBP. Both of them got seed money and after that a tiny annual stipend otherwise they do what all good non-profits do, hit the bricks and find people who want to make donations.
The CPB has nine board members who serve six-year terms and are selected by the President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting's annual budget is funded by a combination of private donations from members, foundations and corporations (54.6% of 2005 budget), State and local taxes (24.6% of 2005 budget) and Federal appropriations (19.0% of 2005 budget).
CNN will be broadcasting live from Berlin and the hosts of the three major US TV networks -- ABC, CBS and NBC all plan to broadcast their prime-time newscasts from the German capital.
They will go on air at 12:30 a.m. German time.

Cable networks MSNBC and CNN have aired segments discussing McCain's "misstep" today, while Joe Scarborough talked about the media angle of the story this morning, and had some harsh words for his fellow MSNBC host...
"I know a couple of hosts ran this last night, made a huge deal because a liberal blogger picked it up. I will guarantee the host that ran it, waving their arms had no idea whether the Sunni Awakening or the surge began at the same time," Scarborough said.
"Anybody that would argue that the Sunni awakening would have survived in Al Anbar Province without the surge, anybody that would make that argument, is so ignorant of the facts on the ground in western Iraq, in Al Anbar Province and what the Sunni Sheiks were doing throughout 2007, that they are too stupid to be on TV. So I hope they don't carry that argument much longer because it is laughable."

He told reporters during an unscheduled stop in a super market that, what the Bush administration calls "the surge" was actually "made up of a number of components," some of which began before the president's order for more troops.
It's all a matter of semantics, he suggested.

We interrupt the nonstop coverage of Barack Obama's overseas trip to bring you some breaking whispers about John McCain.
He has been making a series of verbal slips -- invariably described as "gaffes" -- that are starting to ricochet from liberal blogs to the mainstream media. And fairly or not, some critics are suggesting the 71-year-old Republican candidate is showing his age.
McCain referred to the "Iraq-Pakistan border" in a "Good Morning America" interview; since there is no such border, he must have meant Afghanistan-Pakistan. He has twice referred to Czechoslovakia, a country that ceased to exist in 1993; mixed up Sunnis and Shiites; band identified Vladimir Putin as president of Germany.

Is Russia serious about deploying its nuclear bombers in Cuba to retaliate against U.S. ballistic missile defense deployments in Poland or Lithuania?
The story broke Monday this week when the Russian newspaper Izvestia, citing what it described as "a high placed source" in the Russian government, said if the United States went ahead with its plans to deploy Ground-based Mid-course Interceptors in Poland or Lithuania, the Kremlin could retaliate by basing its Tupolev Tu-160 White Swan supersonic nuclear bombers -- NATO codename Blackjack -- in Cuba.
