The times...
Author: BobR    Date: 07/25/2008 12:16:20

Come writers and critics who prophesize with your pens
And keep your eyes open, the chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon, the wheel's still in spin
And there's no telling who that it's naming
Oh the loser will be later to win
For the times, they are a changing

Come senators, congressmen, please head the call
Don't stand in the doorway, don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt will be her that has stalled
The battle outside ragging will soon shake your windows
And rattle your hall
For the times, they are a changing

- from The Times They Are a-Changin' by Bob Dylan

I had a friend I've known since we were both teenagers in the 70's visit us last night. The three of us talked about the old times. It brought back memories of another era, one that likely seems so alien to anyone a couple decades younger. We bought soda in glass quart bottles by the case, and returned them (and the wooden case) for the deposit. We spent summers in a tiny cottage in the mountains with no TV and no computers (no such thing as a PC at that time). We had a shortwave multiband radio that we could dial in staticy signals from around the world in the evening (even that activity's days are numbered, as everything goes digital). We played games on a board instead of a computer, went for walks, swam in the lake during the day. My special treat was an ice cream sandwich from the Tasti Freeze.

It was a turbulent time back then in the early 70's. The Cold War was at its height, there was social and racial unrest, Germany and Berlin were divided, and war in a faraway land. The previously quoted lyrics, although written a decade earlier, could well have described the palatable need for change felt among the populace.

As is often the case, the monetary fortunes and conscience of the nation goes through cycles. We made strides towards helping those that needed it, we ended a war, the walls fell, the cold thawed. We as a nation got richer and found we wanted more, and got more and partied like it was 1999.

The rest of the world? For a lot of people - not so much. Our consuming consumer frenzy was built on the backs of the poor people in the world who made our products for what could easily be considered slave wages. As we consumed more, we bought more from overseas, sending our money there and padding the bank accounts of the executives of the companies that sold us the things we thought we needed.

We never really ended our civil and social ills, we simply outsourced them.

For some, though, too much is never enough, and the poor of the world could not support the lifestyles of America AND fill the coffers of the rich at the top. So after a decade of money flowing uphill, once again the poor and middle class in America are in the position of having to push for social and economic justice for themselves.

At the same time, we once again have wars in faraway lands and - ironically - walls going up in Israel and America.

It is against this political and social backdrop, and the very physical backdrop of the reunited Berlin that Barack Obama gave his speech yesterday. He asked the world:
Will we extend our hand to the people in the forgotten corners of this world who yearn for lives marked by dignity and opportunity; by security and justice? Will we lift the child in Bangladesh from poverty, shelter the refugee in Chad, and banish the scourge of AIDS in our time?

Will we stand for the human rights of the dissident in Burma, the blogger in Iran, or the voter in Zimbabwe? Will we give meaning to the words “never again” in Darfur?

Will we acknowledge that there is no more powerful example than the one each of our nations projects to the world? Will we reject torture and stand for the rule of law? Will we welcome immigrants from different lands, and shun discrimination against those who don’t look like us or worship like we do, and keep the promise of equality and opportunity for all of our people?

Will we? The times they are a-changin'.

Again.

Pedestrian "Doing Fine" After Novak Hit - 7/25 - The homeless pedestrian who was struck by a car driven by syndicated columnist Robert Novak said in a WMAL interview yesterday that he is "doing fine," recovering from a dislocated shoulder, and voiced surprise and amusement that the political pundit was at the wheel of the Chevrolet Corvette that hit him in downtown DC on Wednesday. "Bob Novak is the one that hit me?" said 86-year-old Don Clifford Liljenquist, sounding astonished when WMAL reporter Troy Russell told him that the driver was Novak. "Well, everybody knows who Bob Novak is! He's a famous journalist!... I was struck by Bob Novak?... Well, I think that makes it a great story!" More in the DC Post and at wmal.com.....

Mrs. TriSec and I were as hardcore as anyone over the X Files back in the day....

It's sucked since the next-to-last season. As we called it then, the "Y-Files", as in "Why are we still watching this?"

We're not optomistic; Mrs. TriSec has already declared that this is the "Z-Files" movie.

Besides, how did they film it without Gillian and David killing each other?

Mornin' Everybody :coffee:

Excellent post BobR - I also came of age in the 70s (graduated high school in '77), and even in back woods Indiana where I was reared, we got the news and I remember watching the body bags coming back from Vietnam and knowing that something was happening beyond my little world out in the cornfields. I remember growing up watching the Kennedy assasinations and MLK being shot dead and thinking that all great leaders were ultimately assasinated. Now comes another leader with great potential - I hope that as a people we have come farther than to squander this opportunity. My two cents for this Fridee morning... :P

Cheers,

At least their nicer then our neighborhood squirrel. if you move one of the peanuts he's buried then he gets all pissed of and takes revenge. When we put in the extention to the flower bed we found a bunch of peanuts where we were digging so we threw them out in to the commons for the squirrel to find again. The little thing, over night, found the nuts, buried them and then dug a big hole in on of our pots pushing on of the plant almost all the way out.

If it happens, I hope that this country is invaded by outside forces (not unlike our invasion of Iraq) in order to force a regime change. I would certainly join forces with the foreign invaders to displace the illegitimate government Taking up arms is something that I don't think I could do, but I would definitely support their efforts - mend their wounds, feed them, house them.... I'm just saying:

When a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

The caller is a real head-case.

I lack the ability to make any sense from what some people say. I think they are stuck in a word game mentality - they are dead set in their thinking so all that is left is word games. They think they are smarter and better than anybody that doesn't think like them. They assume their superior position is absolute and correct so they just do their best Perry Mason moment made from whole cloth.

THE COSTS OF MAJOR U.S. WARS

U.S. military spending on the war in Iraq has nearly matched the cost

of the war in Vietnam, according to a new Congressional Research

Service analysis of the financial costs of wars throughout U.S.

history. And total post-9/11 U.S. military spending has exceeded the

cost of Vietnam by a considerable margin.

The ongoing war in Iraq has incurred an estimated $648 billion to date,

and total post-9/11 military spending including the Iraq War,

Afghanistan and other terrorism-related military expenditures has

reached $859 billion, the CRS reported.

The Vietnam War (1965-1975) cost an estimated $686 billion in 2008

dollars, the CRS said.

The total cost of the American Revolution (1775-1783) was $101 million,

or about $1.8 billion in 2008 dollars.

The cost of World War II (1941-1945) was about $4.1 trillion in 2008

dollars, and consumed a massive 35.8% of gross domestic product. The

Iraq war represents 1% of GDP today.

These estimates include various caveats and limitations spelled out by

CRS.

"All estimates are of the costs of military operations only and do not

include costs of veterans benefits, interest paid for borrowing money

to finance wars, or assistance to allies," the CRS report indicated.

"Comparisons of costs of wars over a 230 year period... are inherently

problematic," the new report cautioned.

See "Costs of Major U.S. Wars," Congressional Research Service, July

24, 2008:

When we send our young men and women into harm’s way, we have a solemn obligation not to fudge the numbers or shade the truth about why they’re going, to care for their families while they’re gone, to tend to the soldiers upon their return, and to never ever go to war without enough troops to win the war, secure the peace, and earn the respect of the world.

Watch what is being said and by whom, the politicians are talking about "drilling" the oil companies are talking about "leases" - if the oil companies talked about drilling we could ask why they aren't drilling in the millions of acres of leases they are holding. We could ask the politicians the same thing if they spoke to leases instead of drilling.

I've been asking myself that question, Mala. I think it has something to do with the root idea of conservative. They essentially look to the past for answers. They want to conserve. So they look for the extractive bidness, coal, oil, natural gas. These are the ones they get. You have remember that all alternative energy research stopped as of October 1 1981 when Reagan's first budget took effect. St Ronnie of the Many Municipal Buildings was against that government R&D into things like solar, wind, syn-fuels etc. So we lost eight year of R&D there. Another four under Bush 41. So there ya have it, something else that is all Dutch's fault. That twenty years after his presidency we are still paying for.

I was watching a little C-Span during my getaway (it was one of three channels on the cable at the family compound that I would actually watch, the rest is garbage TV), and there were Repub reps on the floor of the House talking about mining for oil shale, drilling off the coast, all kinds of stuff to do while we work on getting alternative energy up and running.

The way these idiots talk, you'd think a new oil platform that started construction today and could pump oil in 10 years would be providing energy faster, or a strip mine for oil shale would be able to come close to producing the same quantity of energy as say.. a wind farm that can be constructed from the fiberglass mold to operating condition in less than two years.

Still translates as "cats misery" in bablefish - probably like "bear-bite" a nickname for a hangover? Babelfish is very literal and so is not a translator for how a word is used in the culture. Babelfish will translate the English word "chick" into the word for chicken. And the common phrase for my "girlfriend" in French is literally "my little cabbage."

Per Wiki:

The word katzenjammer is German, used to indicate a general state of confusion or bewilderment. It's commonly used in reference to a hangover. The literal translation is "wailing cat."

So the food industry has held up an electronic system for tracing stuff like people getting sick from tomatoes yet . . .

Tomato growers push for compensation over FDA warning on salmonella

So, if I understand this, the tomato growers (and others) lobby to stall a new electronic system that could trace produce then when there is a problen they also want to sue the government for taking so long to trace the problem?

Sounds like a heck of a racket?

The Wolf Blitzer interview of McCain running on CNN right now - 4.20 PM EST - might be a turning point for US media.

For the first time, a major television personality did not let McCain squirm away from answering a direct question. And McCain is doing a dead-on imitation of a delusional Bush.

Mac is claiming flat out that Maliki will simply not ask him to withdraw US troops - because he knows Maliki so well that this is simply inconceivable.

Interestingly, McCain tried to evade the question initially by giving a rambling, Grandpa Simpson non-answer that was aimed at bamboozling Wolf from pressing on with the question.

So Wolf did something highly unusual - he repeated the question.

And McCain claimed he simply knows Maliki will not ask him to withdraw the troops.

Could he get any closer to Bush and his "I know Putin's soul" fiasco?

"Bush never uses the word 'table'", explained hagiographer Dana Perrino. "He prefers the word 'horizon', as in 'Time Horizon for Leaving Iraq'."

"Likewise, the George W Bush Library will feature 'Reading Horizons' that will support books, newspapers and coffee cups. The library's website will detail its features in convenient 'data horizons', formatted by use of the HTML 'horizon' tag. The cafeteria will even feature a Foosball Horizon!"

A motion by the Library's Trustees to reconsider the language change was swiftly horizoned.

WHK AM/1420, the only Cleveland-area station carrying Savage's radio talk show, is break ing its contract with Savage's syndicator, Talk Radio Net work, said Mark Jaycox, who manages the Cleveland stations under the Salem Com munications corporate um brella. WHK is owned by Cali fornia-based Sa lem Communi cations.

MSNBC beats on Fox for its 'anti-aging fix' for McCain

Over a "Beat the Press: Fox Anti-Aging Fix" graphic, Abrams urged, "Take a good look at the senator and the video they use." He then showed a clip in which Fox ran video of a strangely youthful and vigorous-looking McCain at a campaign rally to accompany a story about McCain's current campaign schedule. However, the video also prominently features a sign reading "www.mccain2000.com," which at one point is even waved in front of McCain's face.

"Fox is actually using eight year old video to discuss today's activities," Abrams marveled. He concluded cheerfully, "They report -- you decide."

By the time Tri sees this, I should already be back home. I'm probably going to try and nap on the plane since I have plenty to do when I get home tomorrow.

Alas, I am not a richer man and I share the same wish as Velveeta and that I want enough money so I don't have to work. God, I hate my job and the crappy pay I get.

I know this might fall on deaf ears but . . .

I know some wealthy people, very wealthy. No addage has ever been more true than "if you aren't happy without money you will not be happy with it" -

Happiness is a mindset, one you have to take charge of with or without money.

Money really doesn't buy happiness but it will buy a higher quality of unhappiness.

The rich are the scum of the earth in every country.

2 more U.S. banks fail

WASHINGTON: Federal regulators closed two small Western banks Friday, bringing to seven the number of U.S. banks that have failed this year.

The banks, owned by First National Bank Holding Co. of Scottsdale, Arizona, will have their deposits and some assets transferred to Mutual of Omaha Bank, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., or FDIC.
