Completely Frivilous Friday
Author: wickedpam    Date: 09/05/2008 12:19:43

Morning All!

I know I could have focused on last night's speech but to be honest my brain and heart weren't in it. It's hard to gin up even the remotest interest in something that I already have a notion will go sometime like this: blah, blah, blah, POW, POW, POW, bah, blah, blah, 911, 911, 911, blah, blah, blah. So I thought I would end this week with some frivolous fun instead. This is something of a throw back to the old days of Unfiltered.

For those who for whatever reason didn’t get to listen to the original show that brought a lot of us together, Fridays were reserved for not just the usual news but also had a feature of bringing music and mixology to the table. I think that is also the place where we saw the origination of the Raintini.

This week the news has been dominated by hurricanes and the Republican convention, so basically it’s all hot air and blowing stuff around. And that is the overall theme for music and adult beverages, so feel free to add.

How does one rock you like a hurricane, I wonder. I mean a few of us have been through a good number of storms and it seems to me that it’s mostly –

Dark & Stormy
2oz Black Rum
8oz of Ginger Beer.
Pour rum over ice add ginger beer and stir.

In addition to the wind there is also an amazing amount of –

Eye of the Storm
7oz Spiced Rum
10oz Coca Cola
1oz Lime Juice.
Add lime juice, then rum, then coke, stir but don’t kill the bubbles.

Then the eye comes over and it’s absolutely beautiful, with the freshest air you can imagine and a bright blue sky. In some cases it can be a little creepy knowing you’ve just gone through this storm and you still have the back to go, so –

But at the end of the storm we all reach out for

and know that everything will be better with the dawn of a new day. :p

Tequila Sunrise
2 measures of Tequila
Orange Juice
2 dashes Grenadine

Pour tequila in a highball glass with ice, and top with orange juice. Stir. Add grenadine by tilting glass and pouring grenadine down side by flipping the bottle vertically very quickly. The grenadine should go straight to the bottom and then rise up slowly through the drink. Garnish stirrer, straw and cherry-orange.

So have a good weekend everyone. Safe travels for all those on the road and thanks to everyone for letting me be totally frivolous this Friday.

Ya'll know your the best, right?!

Good morning Mala!

Don't know if I want to rehash my gibberish I deposited over at mfaye's post

I just posted a little blurb over there about a proposal to revamp the entire AM radio band (obviously affecting just about all the current talk stations) creating a new band with much more space that would cater to more local broadcasting.

OW! I'm listening to yesterday's SMS. What the frell is that noise?

Not surprising, they're only 5kW. Not much coverage there.

Sorry to say I'm not into Ghost Hunters. My list of shows I watch religiously is extremely limited.

The military person at the RNC last night was from IVAW. Nothing on their website, but compare and contrast the "top story"...

IVAW Updates

IVAW Turned Back from Delivering Briefing to McCain

A formation of 60 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans marched in uniform to Xcel Energy Center on Monday to deliver a briefing on veterans’ issues to Senator McCain on the opening day of the Republican National Convention.

IVAW member Wes Davey led the march and attempted to deliver the briefing to Senator McCain’s staff. Despite numerous mailed, faxed, and in-person invitations to meet, McCain’s office refused to send anyone to receive the briefing. When Davey, a retired Army First Sergeant and former St. Paul police officer, attempted to deliver the briefing, he was escorted off the premises.

Davey is a father of five and grandfather of seven. He served 28 years in the Army, including a tour in Iraq in 2003. His oldest child has served two tours in Iraq. "After being an NCO for all those years, I care deeply about all those still serving in Iraq," said Davey about his reasons for organizing this march.

Read more for a full description and photos of the action and to download a copy of the briefing IVAW was attempting to deliver to Senator McCain.

*************

IVAW Victory: Message Delivered at the DNC

IVAW members were in Denver on August 27th where they led a march of ten thousand to the Democratic National Convention to deliver a message to Barack Obama calling on the Democratic nominee to endorse the three main goals of IVAW: Immediate withdrawal, full veterans benefits, and reparations for the Iraqi people.

Following a packed show at the Denver Coliseum where Rage Against the Machine and the Flobots encouraged the crowd to join IVAW's march, two squads of 25 IVAW members each formed up outside the venue and began marching to the Pepsi center. The squads were led by members in dress uniforms and combat uniforms, with thousands of supporters marching behind them in support.

The death of a taboo

September 4, 2008 08:41 PM

ST. PAUL -- One of the most enduring taboos in American politics, the airing of graphic images from the September 11 attacks in a partisan context, died today. It was nearly seven years old.

The informal prohibition, which had been occasionally threatened by political ads in recent years, was pronounced dead at approximately 7:40 CST, when a video aired before delegates at the Republican National Convention included slow-motion footage of a plane striking the World Trade Center, the towers' subsequent collapse, and smoke emerging from the Pentagon.

The September 11 precedent was one of the few surviving campaign-season taboos. It is survived by direct comparisons of one's opponents to Hitler.

Comment by velveeta jones on 09/05/2008 14:19:49
WoooHOOOOO! My old friends, Ann and Nancy Wilson, of Heart, have also told McCain to STOP using their music.

 Poor John.

But the Wilsons condemned the usage, adding that Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG have sent a cease-and-desist notice to the McCain-Palin campaign, according to CNN. "We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music,'' the group said in a statement.

Poor Grampy. Maybe Air Supply will let you use "Afternoon Delight". *snort*

Good morning.

I just want to clarify about the Arial hunting of Wolves and Bears. That itself is not the "sport." Those animals are being culled to make the "sport" of hunting Caribou and Moose easier for the Hunters. Wolves and Bears are their competition.

It makes me f*ckin' sick.

I'd rather my President be a Vegan than a Hunter.

Well, you know that's much less of an issue in New England. I think we have Black Bears and Coyotes....not really the same level of competition as the Grizzly and Wolf. No he just said we should've fired a few Tomahawk missiles at the spot, without regard for what the governments of other countries might think or possible civilian casualties or anything.

And ya know what.. I agree with that. We should have taken that kind of action - it wouldn't take more than a few minutes to speak with the leaders of India and Pakistan to get approval for such action. What I don't agree with is that killing Bin Laden would've done anything to stop 9/11 from happening because the plot was already WELL into motion if anything it would've made those involved more brazen.

“So Sambo beat the bitch!”

This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.

According to Lucille, the waitress serving her table at the time and who asked that her last name not be used, Gov. Palin was eating lunch with five or six people when the subject of the Democrat’s primary battle came up. The governor, seemingly not caring that people at nearby tables would likely hear her, uttered the slur and then laughed loudly as her meal mates joined in appreciatively.

If you've got cable, you probably can rent one - like $15/month. They're serviceable.

I'll assume you don't have a Media Center PC. If you have recent PC with a good size hard drive you can get a USB tuner for about $100 that will record as well.

Bob R. thanks for the Joe Biden video today. It made my day. I wanted to jump up and down in my kitchen.

I swear if HALF this shit about Palin is true, it will be amazing if she survives politically after this. I think she is just thinking about flying up to heaven in the end times.

Have I mentioned I begin my theology class tomorrow at the College of St Catherine in St Paul?! HA! Sgonna be funnee!!!

My cable system charges $10 month for DVR service. The only thing is they charge the same whether it's HD or SD. I went with the HD before I had the HD set because the HD DVR's have more storage space.

Comment by velveeta jones on 09/06/2008 01:56:42
Michael Moore rocks!! I love the way he is under-handedly snarky. Like "We should not mention the kids at all. Never. I remember when McCain told that joke about Chelsea Clinton........"

Larry King showed a clip from that it looks crappy An American Carol movie. He just said that he hopes it's funny. I wonder if he wanted his South Park figure from Team America?

Of course, the nastiest thing about the cable DVR is that you can't save anything unless you have another recorder.

That's if you want to keep it. I could still transfer my recordings to tape but most of my recordings are just stuff that I record to watch later. Unfortunately, they tend to build up then I am just catching up to clean out the storage space.

Comment by livingonli on 09/06/2008 02:38:49
If I could go back to Dish Network, their 722 Hi-Def DVR has 300 hours of storage capcity in its hard drive for SD although it drops to 45 hours if you only record HD content.

There's no way of getting the actual file off the hard drive - unlike a TiVo where you can send it over a network to another PC. If you want to keep something you have use something like a VCR or a DVD recorder.

I can't wait for the take on the McCain speech tonight on Stewart and Colbert.

Comment by livingonli on 09/06/2008 03:09:00
John Stewart juxtaposed John McCain's acceptance speech with George Bush's 2000 speech. Eerily similar.

I'm trying to listen to today's SMS. I'm also trying to collect all the photo files I have and all the camera cards and try to make some sense of it, while the wife keeps finding other cards and she insists some photos are missing.....

I think it's way past my bedtime.....
