Democratic Family Values
Author: BobR    Date: 09/10/2008 12:10:27

Yesterday I happened to catch a minute of FOX News asking people who they supported and why. The man who was asked that question responded that he supported McCain (surprise! ) because McCain/Palin better represented his "values". Had I been that reporter, I would've asked what values he was talking about. Of course, the reporter did not ask. But the question stuck with me nonetheless...

How can anyone say that Democrats do not support family values more than Republicans?

Democrats have long supported causes and legislation that help families, often against Republican opposition. One of the most obvious examples is SCHIP. This program is meant to ensure that all children - regardless of the family's financial resources - can get the healthcare they need. Democrats tried to expand the program. How is ensuring that children get the healthcare they need NOT a "family value"?

Of course, Democrats would like to take it a step further and provide Universal Healthcare ("a family doctor for every family"). Republicans prefer a "market-based" approach. How is ensuring that every family gets the healthcare they need NOT a "family value"?

Democrats have fought for school lunches, after-school programs for families of working mothers, preschool programs, and college loans for kids that can't afford them. They've fought back against school vouchers which destroy the public education system we've had for so long. The Republicans support NCLB even though it has ruined the education system, replacing actual teaching with "teaching to the test", and taking school funds away from schools that need funds the most. How is ensuring that every child gets the education they need NOT a "family value"?

Democrats have had to fight tooth and nail to keep programs like Welfare and WIC going. Republicans sneer at these programs referring to "Welfare Queens", when abuse of the programs is minimal and ensures that down-on-their-luck families get the food and clothing they need. How is ensuring that every family gets at least basic food and clothing NOT a "family value"?

Democrats have been the ones that have always had to push for environmental regulation. Republicans always accuse Democrats of being Chicken Littles, crying "the sky is falling" (if it gets any more pollution in it, it just might). In case you weren't already aware, the FDA under this Administration can no longer mandate food recalls. They must ask the food manufacturer, and the manufacturer can decide to issue a recall or not. The Republicans are against ANY form of regulation on business. How is ensuring that every family is protected from unscrupulous business NOT a "family value"? How is ensuring that every family can raise their children in a world where they can breathe clean air and eat safe food NOT a "family value"?

The Democrats have always been on the side of Labor, pushing for safety regulation and a minimum wage. This helps to ensure that Dad comes home from work every night in one piece, with a paycheck that the family can live on. How is ensuring that families get a livable wage and a safe workplace NOT a "family value"?

Democrats have always supported allowing gay couples to foster and adopt, against Republican opposition. The evidence shows that these children are happy and well cared for, and do NOT grow up to be gay (at least not anymore than the statistical average). How is ensuring that all children have a chance to grow up in a family environment NOT a family value?

Finally, Democrats have pushed for REAL sex education for teenagers and free condom distribution, while Republicans push for "abstinence-only". The fact that the current Republican vice-presidential candidate has a pregnant teenage daughter should show what a failure abstinence-only sex education is. How is trying to keep teenagers free from pregnancy and sexually-transmitted diseases NOT a "family value"?

I'm sure I missed a few other family values that Democrats support (feel free to add them in the comments).

Meanwhile, the Republicans try to disassemble the safety net that was initiated by FDR, they always want to punish rather than help, they try to deny education to their kids if they feel the facts do not agree with their religious beliefs, they continue to run up budget deficits that their children will have to pay for, and they want the "market" to regulate itself, even if it means some people get hurt, starve, or worse. Are these family values?

Not in MY family.

Listening to Gov. Palin on last night's KO podcast....

OK, I don't like her voice. It's just got that "note" to it that irritates me. It's sing-songy; almost like a little chirping bird.

I'm sorry; maybe that's my last prejudice. If people sound stupid to me, I guess I can't help but think that they are.

Morning all! :coffee2:

I found something quite intriguing about Obama's speech yesterday on education reform. He is in favor of merit-based pay for teachers. This seemed like a really bold, unorthodox move for a candidate of the party that traditionally gets the most support from unions, particularly the NEA. They've fought hard against pay based on performance, and I can understand why..

...but I have to ask the teachers and the unions, with all due respect and admiration for the work they do and the struggle they have in a union-hostile environment, why is this not something that we can agree on? Why shouldn't teachers be encouraged to do the best job they can to prepare children for the world, and why shouldn't the best teachers be rewarded for such an important task?! Unions can still handle other important aspects of the labor movement - baseline pay, health insurance, workplace safety, and pensions - but in this case let's put the students first, do the best we can, and then worry about being rewarded.

So why was this ok, exactly? Not too hypocritical?

The Republicans needs to grow up and stop treating Sarah Palin like some fragile little Rapunzel. This is politics. No one said it was easy.

Good morning all.

I guess the tinkering with the registration and ignoring the shift to Democrats is the way to maintain the illusion of a competitive race. But what does worry me is that the Republicans may be trying to use tactics to purge people from the voter rolls and intimidate people to keep people especially Democrats from voting this year. I remember the problems BobR and Raine had with their voter registrations and even Randi has ranted about how she changed her registration when she moved back to Florida and she still hasn't gotten her card.

You could just make an ad going after the Health Care Proposal. A $2500 tax cut so you have to pay $12,000 more in health insurance means you fall further behind instead of coming out ahead.

I guess that he figures that he can one up what Cheney, Rove, and Libby did with Valerie Plame to try and save his own ass but that won't work unless he has official approval from the Bush/Cheney crime family like what they did with Plame.

Apparently, I met rap "star" MA$E Monday night and didn't even know it. As some of you know, I work a second job a couple nights a week delivering pizza to get myself out of my finanicial hole. I got a delivery to a warehouse district, and the "business" name was "Elyon".

It turns out the business is actually some kind of church (El Elyon), and the head of it is "Dr." Mason Betha, aka MA$E. After delivering, he followed me out to the car and handed me something and invited me to pay them a visit.

What I thought was a brochure for a business turned out to actually be a ticket for "preferred parking and seating" for a Sunday service.

Only in Atlanta...

I have a friend from an other site that now has to work 2 jobs to bring more money into her families home. Right now they are living under the poverty line and I am amazed how they are able to make it. A lot of it, is they've learned to be extremely resourceful - something more people need to learn to be.

Comment by livingonli on 09/10/2008 14:56:44

Regarding Jane Swift...

As I recall, she was governor on the morning of September 11.

Unfairly or not, she was made the scapegoat by the local media, and everything she did the rest of her term was under the world's biggest microscope.

She never had a chance to be re-elected, and that's how we wound up with Argeo Paul Cellucci and then Mitt the Twit.

So now she's a GOP attack-dog? Great, McCain must have offered her a position or something.

I continue to be disgruntled.

I brought it all up... the investigation, the pregnancy, abortion (believe it or not, my father is pro choice) the national debt & how much we owe to China.. the national Oil preserve and the 10,000 unused oil leases, John McCAin voting against Women, oil... the war debt... the lying into war... her experience, John McCAin saying what he said about child predators...

Pastor gate, jews for jesus... Oh the list goes on... and YES, I yelled, I told dad, in no uncertain terms, not to f*ck with me this morning.... I told him I am sick and tired of his party making such a trivial Joke of an election that is more important than any other in our life time. I asked him if he is pleased with this man McCain treating Americans like they are stupid is OK with him? I told him that he is a fool if he thinks John McCain really cares about issues if he is more than willing to create a fake outrage over a comment that he himslef has made numerous times.

The conversation ended well... believe it or not. I do not think that dad will try to poke me with a stick for a few weeks....

In other news, Reason 845 why Obama shouldn't be elected: among his mocking of McCain in being a "change" agent, he uses termonology from a political cartoon. saying McCain will stand up to Bush, except for (list of similiar policies). It's the one honor that can't be consciously earned; you're voted in by your peers, so it's a more "pure" award.

In any case, I've used snippets of the Obligation as my own 'personal mission statement' of sorts.

Govt. Proble of interior deprartment in Denver and DC...
Government officials handling billions of dollars in oil royalties engaged in illicit sex with employees of energy companies they were dealing with and received numerous gifts from them, federal investigators said Wednesday.

The alleged transgressions involve 13 Interior Department employees in Denver and Washington. Their alleged improprieties include rigging contracts, working part-time as private oil consultants, and having sexual relationships with — and accepting golf and ski trips and dinners from — oil company employees, according to three reports released Wednesday by the Interior Department's inspector general.

The investigations reveal a "culture of substance abuse and promiscuity" by a small group of individuals "wholly lacking in acceptance of or adherence to government ethical standards," wrote Inspector General Earl E. Devaney.

The reports describe a fraternity house atmosphere inside the Denver Minerals Management Service office responsible for marketing the oil and gas that energy companies barter to the government instead of making cash royalty payments for drilling on federal lands. The government received $4.3 billion in such Royalty-in-Kind payments last year. The oil is then resold to energy companies or put in the nation's emergency stockpile.

Between 2002 and 2006, nearly a third of the 55-person staff in the Denver office received gifts and gratuities from oil and gas companies, the investigators found.

Devaney said the former head of the Denver Royalty-in-Kind office, Gregory W. Smith, used illegal drugs and had sex with subordinates. The report said Smith also steered government contracts to a consulting business that was employing him part-time.

Smith, contacted by e-mail by The Associated Press, said he had not seen the report and could not respond. He and nine other employees in the Denver office are mentioned in the reports.

The findings are the latest sign of trouble at the Minerals Management Service, which has already been accused of mismanaging the collection of fees from oil companies and writing faulty contracts for drilling on government land and offshore. The charges also come as lawmakers and both presidential candidates weigh giving oil companies more access to federal lands, which would bring in more money to the federal government.
I wonder how many of those people are friends with MCCAin... or his lobbyists.

Oh... you were being sarcastic?

I was a little nervous there for a minute Random. My dry humour button is on the fritz today.

This is something that concerns me more.

Thomas Frank noticed in the Journal today that Sarah Palin used an odd source for a quote in her announcement speech attributed only to a "writer."

"We grow good people in our small towns, with honesty and sincerity and dignity," she said, drawing from a once-powerful, now forgotten mid-century conservative columnist named Westbrook Pegler.

It's an odd source because Pegler, who moved further right as his career went on, ended up very, very far out. Frank notes that he talked hopefully of the assassination of Franklin Roosevelt.

He was also known for what Philip Roth described as his "casual distaste for Jews," which had become so evident by the end that he was bounced from the journal of the John Birch Society in 1964 for alleged anti-semitism. According to his obituary, he'd advanced the theory that American Jews of Eastern European descent were "instinctively sympathetic to Communism, however outwardly respectable they appeared.

OK...

I have to say this. I had a dream the other day, actually night.

Let me see if I can transfer the chat I had with a friend about it (this was yesterday):

Raine: I had a dream last night that MCCain had to step down from the nomination.

Friend: Did Palin take over the top spot, or did they put in someone else/

Raine: In the dream she was trying to act like she was all in charge... it was a crazy chaotic dream...

Friend: wow

Raine: people were walking around like they didn't know what to do. We had to leave the bar.... becuase it didn't feel safe.

Raine: Sarah was there trying to tell people she would handle this... and she was kinda screachy. So I don't know if she got the slot.

Raine: we went home to watch Bill Maher.

Friend: I just hope people in America do the right thing like the voters did in Pakistan

Raine: The other part of the dream was that what McCain did just shocked everyone. Damn I wish I could remember what the hell it was. Even I was shocked.

=================================

This was yesterday Morning. I have been walking around with a funny feeling all day. I wanted to share this all with you.
