A Stormy Season

With our quadrennial presidential election just weeks away, the candidates have been at the eye of the storm, while campaign advisers, 527s and the media swirl around the periphery. The victims of the destructive hot air have been the truth, common sense, and common decency.

The only interruptions have been the hurricanes which - this year - seem to be coming more frequently and more brutal, almost as if to mimic the maelstrom which is the campaign circus. Hurricane Ike seems to targeting Galveston, TX which was submerged by a hurricane 108 years ago. There are, however, more scientific explanations, and none of them bode well for residents near the Caribbean.

My sister lives in Louisiana between Baton Rouge and New Orleans (closer to Baton Rouge). She survived Katrina without much difficulty because it passed about 70 miles to the east of her. Gustav, however, passed about 15 miles to the west of her. As you may know, the eastern side of the hurricane is always worse, because it is being fed by warmer waters. She lost power for 3 days and had some minor structural damage to her house from the wind.

Her husband went to get some supplies that were being handed out to those in need. He only asked for a few items, but they seemed to not listen and tossed all kinds of supplies into his truck (such as bottled water). One might be encouraged by their enthusiasm and the thought that they "got it right" this time after the disastrous relief effort for Katrina, but there's also the realization that the supplies he got which he didn't need were effectively denied to someone that really DID need them.

Relief efforts will likely be a growing concern in this and future seasons. The current studies show that while warmer water may not necessarily create more hurricanes, it can create stronger hurricanes:
Global warming is affecting the intensity of Atlantic hurricanes, according to a new study by a university professor in Florida who says his research provides the first direct link between climate change and storm strength.

James Elsner of Florida State University said he set out to perform a statistical analysis of the two theories in a raging debate within the scientific community: Whether recent intense hurricanes are the result of climate change or natural ocean warming and cooling cycles.

"Is the atmosphere forcing the ocean or the ocean forcing the atmosphere?" Elsner asked.

The issue has a wide-ranging impact on insurance companies, municipal planners, some 50 million residents of hurricane-prone US coastal communities and millions of others in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean islands.

Atlantic hurricanes draw their energy from the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea.

He found that average air temperatures during hurricane season between June and November were useful in predicting sea surface temperatures, but not the other way around.

"It appears that atmospheric warming comes before sea warming," he said, indicating that hurricane damage will be likely to continue increasing because of greenhouse warming.

But a growing body of research indicates human-induced global warming -- driven by heat-trapping gases in air pollution from cars and factories -- could be heating sea water, which in turn fuels stronger hurricanes.

Conservatives have selfishly denied that global warming exists or - if it does - is not the result of mankind's actions, nor do we have the power to arrest it. These denials are likely due to their desire to maintain their destructive lifestyles, nor "cave in" to foreign countries' "demands". However, the financial fallout and increased national security risks from these destructive storms may be the key to changing their tune:
A new draft report from the United States' top intelligence analyst forecasts future security threats to the U.S. and other nations from climate change, as well as declining influence of the U.S. on world affairs. The report is intended to brief the new U.S. president early next year on the security outlook for the next 15 years, and parts of the assessment may sound familiar to environmentalists and other climate watchers since the U.S. intelligence community is apparently up on its climate science. The report predicts that climate change will cause drought and food shortages and exacerbate freshwater supplies around the globe; it will also likely cause dustbowl conditions in the U.S. Southwest making the area hostile to agriculture. For developing countries, climate change "could be the straw that breaks the camel's back," leading to political and humanitarian crises and spurring mass migrations, said report author Thomas Fingar. The new report's climate conclusions are in line with three other climate-change security assessments also released this year from the U.S., Britain, and the European Union.

This should amplify the point of just how important it is that we elect a president, vice-president, senators, and congresspeople that understand the environmental crisis we face, and are willing to do something about it. While the hurricane season is a handy metaphor for our political season, the two are entwined in a cause/effect danse macabre. Despite the focus on jobs and the economy, damage due to the effects of global warming will further devastate our economy, illustrating yet another reason why this election is so critical.

I'm worried we're getting lulled into a level of low expectation again. Plus when Biden stikes back at her inthe debate they are gonna scream sexism. Which in my eyes is completely sexist it self.

HE was released becuase the statute of limitiations (right to a speedy trial)... I quoted the 6th ammendment...

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district where in the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defense.



It occurs to me, if Sarah Palin charged victims to pay for their own evidence in a rape case... would that NOT be unconstitutional in accordance to the 6th and possibly the 14th ammendment? HEre is the 14th, Section 1: (boldface mine)



Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. Sorry that I have been quiet, but I just got my internet connection here in Phoenix. I am busy working on a few things but I thought I would swing by as I am getting ready to run some errands.



As for Palin, I am not surprised by her performance. She should know the Bush doctrine, and I think that she will prove to be a flash in the pan.



Raine, I did see some of Barack Obama at the service forum and he handled himself well. I think that we have to keep some faith that the American people will chose a superior candidate (Obama) over a cynical panderer (McCain).

It occurs to me, if Sarah Palin charged victims to pay for their own evidence in a rape case... would that NOT be unconstitutional in accordance to the 6th and possibly the 14th ammendment? HEre is the 14th, Section 1: (boldface mine)

I think that the constitution might show why. Equal jurisdiction of the law does not seem to be applied here.



What if a person cannot afford that kit?



Why should someone pay for something that the police should be doing regarding CRIMINAL cases?



This is what police are supposed to do. This is like asking a victim of a murder to pay for the film that forensic police have to take at a murder scene.

Unfortunately, the question is not "is requiring alleged victims to pay for rape kits Constitutional"? -- the question is - "is it Unconstitutional"? (I know that may seem hinky in-and-of itself -- but I'll avoid my whole diatribe on what the Constitution is and isn't (you've already heard it before ))



Just because something is totally grotesque, it doesn't mean the Constitution protects against it.



I can go through the 6th and 14th Amendment arguments, if you like - I don't want to get too far into the weeds if you don't.

At one point, we did not have ballistics testing... at one popint we did not have fingerprinting.



A LONG time ago, rape kits became normal regarding investigations.



I propose that people are still regarded as innocent until proven guilty, and as such, it is the states responsiblty to uphold that.

"Innocent until proven guilty" - no application - that is the right of a defendent, not a victim (ie. 6th Amendment doesn't apply)



And again - the government doesn't have to prove that their action IS Constitutional!



The government can do anything EXCEPT what is Unconstitutional. Just as the people can do anything EXCEPT what the government says they cannot.



Alaska does not have to show that charging for rape kits is Constitutional - the people have to show that charging is Unconstitutional.

I agree on the assessment of the Republicans, but look at the reality of this. They got a post-convention bounce with a surprise VP pick that seems initially appealing. However, the facts on her are leaking out, the Obama camp has a lot of money for ads, and the debates are still to come. This "honeymoon" with Palin will wear off.

Randi talking about Palin's hair and glasses. . . . I have to say I am bummed at how Palin wears her hair. Why? You ask. Well, yours truly is growing her hair out from very short to a little past the shoulder. Now, this process involves the hair seeming to grow at different rates...so the back always looks longer than the top, etc. Those of you at the DC meet up may remember the pigtails. MmmmHm...that's a "Growing Out" situation.

The best style, recently, that I have come up with to make it through the transition, is a sloppy, pseudo naughty librarian updo with the plastic clip, long bangs in the front, tucked behind the ear.



Imagine my shock when the God Warrior had the same doo as !!!

I have a friends in the area of the storm - one is staying because 1) he is a college student from Mexico and doesnt' really have any place to go but to an aunts house that is local and 2) he feels that he can help once the storm has cleared and if people need help aid groups can use the help with translating.



The other is a college student near Houston, he's worried but he and his family don't really have any place to go either.

That's very true and I'm sure they would appreacate the offer but I dont' think they have their cars with them. Think it's going to come in as a low cat 3 high cat 2, Mom's ridden out a Fran a mid to strong cat 3, in Wilmington so I know they will be fine. It's the same problem that happened with New Orleans, they aren't holding back a massive river as far as I know.



They're gonna be okay, they're smart kids.

Ok, I saw the video, and yes I applaud Tweety. This was a really good insight. I would REALLY love for the MEDIA to call slime what it is.



I will offer myself up as a person who has NOT hated him. I have found him to be an opportunist, I never found him to be left or right, I found him to go the way of the wind. (I also think he REALLY wants to run for office in Pennsylvania) HAving said that, tweety annoys me on a daily basis.

Raine, the trip went well - although I was slightly ill on the stretch between Oklahoma City and Amarillo (I made it to to Tucumcari, New Mexico that day.) My dog Holly is well, and is enjoying her new dog and cat friends here!!
