A Storm's Aftermath
Author: BobR    Date: 09/19/2008 12:34:27

This past week the news has been wall-to-wall with coverage of the economic meltdown. Between it and the escalating campaign rhetoric, most other news items have been essentially ignored. One of those news items was all anyone was talking about a week ago: Hurricane Ike. He's gone and may be forgotten by most of the U.S., but his memory lives on along the southern coast.

They say the first casualty in war is the truth. Apparently the first casualty after a hurricane is freedom of the press, followed closely by common sense. When it was discovered that there were dead bodies laying around on the streets of Galveston and in the surrounding water, the government did what one might expect: They made it a no-fly zone to hide it from American eyes:
The ABC News affiliate in Houston carried a video of investigative reporter Wayne Dolcefino confronting Texas governor Rick Perry about temporary “no-fly” zones for TV helicopters over parts of the Bolivar peninsula and west Galveston, the hardest hit areas. Later in the video, Dolcefino tells the ABC anchors:
...
"You know, we hear about disasters in other countries—what was it, Burma, Myanmar—where they won’t let people in to see and you know, this is the state of Texas; this America. And we’re not trying to interfere with rescue and search operations, nor did anyone suggest we would be."

When asked why he thought the government was obstructing access, Dolcefino did not mince words:

"I don’t think they want us to see images that may remind people… of the images that we saw in New Orleans. I don’t think they want us to see the images that were seen in Waveland, Mississippi or Gulfport… I think that’s the reality; they do not want us to see yet, until they can control what we see and how we see it. And that is simply, at least in my career, unacceptable. Maybe a lot of reporters won’t say it, but I will. I think they do not want us to see images of potential fatalities that may be on land or on water".

It's hard to imagine how (this time) the government could be blamed for the deaths in Galveston. The NWS stated in no uncertain terms that those who stayed faced certain death. Galveston is not New Orleans; there is (was) not a large contingent of the population that had no access to transportation off the island.

Instead, many people chose to stay and face "certain death" because they felt they could better protect their property in the aftermath:
But down here on Moss Lake, Hackberry, a town of some 3,000 people and with an average annual income of $37,336, the calculation had less to do with foolhardiness and more with protecting property and animals.

"Survivin' is the name of the game down here," says storm rider Ernest Welch of Hackberry.

In fact, many of the holdouts here share a common distrust of government, intensified by a spate of recent hurricanes and ensuing political maneuvering about who can rebuild.
....
In Galveston, an attempt to allow residents to return to the island was scrapped Tuesday as I-45 piled up with frustrated residents wanting to survey the damage. Meanwhile, 15,000 Galvestonians who stayed were busy cleaning up after the storm, mostly in good spirits despite lack of water and sewer facilities.

"What's happening in Galveston right now is that people who stayed are putting tarps on their roofs and those who did what the government wanted can't get back to their homes to minimize further damage," says Eliot Jennings, Galveston's former emergency management director.

Of course, it doesn't help when pin-heads like Bill O'Reilly proclaim that predictions about the approaching storm are all "hype":
Last week, prior to Hurricane Ike hitting the Texas coast, Bill O'Reilly told his Radio Factor listeners that the dire warnings of Ike's potential damage and threats to life were "hype."
....
Wonder how many of those Folks™ listen(ed) to Bill, and believe what he says isn't hype.

I too wonder how many people died from taking this idiot at his word.

But I suppose people have a reason to distrust their government's handling of the aftermath. The inaction and gross incompetence after Katrina was criminal and is still being dealt with today, 3 years later. Will the survivors of Hurrican Ike suffer a similar fate? So far, it's not looking too good. Besides incompetence distributing food to survivors (they are handing out food that needs to be cooked to people with no electric or gas), FEMA has decided not to distribute ice:
It's frustrating that the government can deliver $85 billion to bail out AIG, and they can't deliver ice in Texas," said Ben Smilowitz, executive director of the Disaster Accountability Project (DAP), a nonpartisan organization that monitors the nation's disaster response system.

In fact, while the federal government can deliver ice to disaster areas, it's chosen not to, under newly-revised FEMA rules. Instead, individual states and local governments are now tasked with purchasing, delivering and storing ice, even though they face tough logistical challenges in doing so, according to critics of the new policy.

Besides preserving food when electricity is out, ice is essential in maintaining temperature-sensitive medication and feeding formulas and keeping people cool in the aftermath of disaster, relief and support workers say.

This has GOT to change. The last 7 years of Republican rule have devastated our ability to cope with disasters; instead they are trying to hide the aftermath from people (strange how the like to use fear when they want to claim they can protect us from external dangers...). With the election less than 7 weeks away, you have to wonder: how are the people in Galveston (and other areas hit by Ike) going to be able to vote? For that matter, what happens if another hurricane or bad storm hits? There's been a lot of flooding in midwest. What if the electricity goes out on election day?

Voter Rights groups in Ohio are posing that very question to the Ohio Secretary of State:
Ike has blown all the way up into the Great Lakes region with devastating impact. Power has been knocked out and airports shut by gale-force winds up to 78 miles per hour. Days later, hundreds of thousands of Midwesterners remain blacked out, and casualties still mount. Ohio Governor Ted Strickland has declared a state of emergency, with up to 2 million Ohioans still without power.

A repeat performance on election day could change the course of US history if paper ballots are not universally ready.

A bitter battle now rages here in the Buckeye State over whether the Secretary of State’s office should provide as many paper ballots as voters might want.

Under current arrangements, half or more of Ohio’s may show up to the polls and be forced to cast their ballots on electronic touch-screen machines. Of 5.4 million ballots cast in 2004, George W. Bush’s official margin of victory was less than 119,000 votes.

These are important issues. Remember the huge blackout several years back that blackened a third of the northern states? What would happen if on election day a huge number of "blue states" lost power? Would there be a "do over"?... or a Supreme Court hearing?

The people of Galveston likely won't have a place to vote come election day. How will that be handled? Natural disasters are bad enough, taking lives and destroying property in their wake. We can't allow them to destroy our democratic process as well. We can't allow poor planning and criminal negligence in the face of disaster to be rewarded.

Good morning all. Oh, I have a headache.

So, Gov. Rick Perry has no problem finding dictatorships as an example of how to deal with national emergencies which is just to hide the problem from view instead of actually dealing with it. Has anyone filed a suit saying he can't do this? Further proof that the modern Republican Party has become a Fascist Political Party.

And as for Rush, he is further proof that you can be a failure and keep getting work. A man who claims he no longer wants to be a water carrier but still is.

The ARC has been working with animal rescue groups to shelter pets next to (but not with) people so that people can evacuate with their pets.

Thing is the quote is from "The End of Poverty" by Jeffrey Sachs, published in '05 and he's talking about third world countries, that fail to thrive economically.

In some ways, we are functioning like a Third World Country. For example, the reaction to Katrina and apparently to Ike as well where they just want to suppress the media coverage.

You are really freaking me out here, :star:

I cannot believe we are taking over Wall street. Basically that is what is happening. To the tune of half a trillion dollars.

We are bailing out the same fuckers who did this to us, and the only people who truly will feel the brunt of it are the middle and lower class. I hate even saying that. I pray for my country today.

I am left wishing that this would have waited (believe it or not) that this would have happened AFTER BArack was elected, I simply TRUST him more no matter what his solution would be. So.. I was flipping through the radio dial yesterday seeing if I could find something interesting to listen to, and I caught a few moments of this local rightie talk show. Bascially the host was saying this:

- Rich people who work hard and are smart and successful get screwed because they pay 40% of their income to various taxes.

- Poor people who don't do anything don't get taxed at all, and want to screw over everyone else because they didn't hit "the genetic innovation lottery".

[rant]

Okay, it's a legitimate argument to want to have a level playing field - either by lowering the rate on the rich or raising the rate on the poor & middle class. But step out of your own comfortable yet unfairly taxed position for a moment and look at it this way.

First, Not everyone who is rich necessarily works hard or is successful. In fact, a fair number of rich people are born into families of wealth. Is that a morally wrong thing? No. BUT IT IS MAKING MONEY WITHOUT WORK. Also, even at a 40% tax rate a millionaire is still keeping $600k which is WELL OVER the cost of living, not to mention their returns on investments WHICH IS MAKING MONEY WITHOUT WORK. If you want to bitch about people who don't do work but get plenty of money, you should start right there with inheritances/estates and capital gains.

Second, the assertion that the poor or even the middle class for that matter doesn't work hard is either a misinformed statement or just a flat-out insult. If we didn't work our asses off this country would come to a dead stop, and you'd be just as dirt poor as the rest of us. So please do the world a favor and shut the fuck up if you're gonna have a holier-than-thou fit.

Third, let's do a little math. Let's take a family of three with a house and one car as our example. Average yearly net income after taxes is about $55k. After a year of $1200 mortgage payments, $450/mo in regular bills, $300/mo in basic needs purchases and $75/wk in gas they've already spent $27k. Another $100/mo each going into a retirement account means they spent about $36k each year. Add a reasonable family splurge vacation and it's another $3-5k. That leaves about... $13k over for miscellaneous stuff or emegency expenses.

The same family making a million a year will usually take home about $600k (that's a 40% tax rate). They will spend much more on their cost of living due to mere extravagances and luxury items. At the end of the year, this same family will have spent 3-5 times the yearly income of the other family, but still have plenty left over (at least $250k) to put into investments and earn more money off of it.

If you raised the income higher, the luxury spending and investment returns would go up exponentially, but cost of living would eventually reach a point where it didn't matter.

Now, do you really expect people to believe that you are basing your argument on the fact that you can't make a decent living off a net income of at least $600k a year because you got taxed 40%?

If that's the case I'll be GLAD to trade places with you and give you an idea what it's like to be in the position of a lower middle class person. Then maybe you'll understand exactly what REAL hard work and REAL money management is like.

[/rant]

Ok, I've been vaguely worried for a few days. Not because of Wall Street (essentially meaningless to me. Investments? What are they?). Not because of the polls, although I'm concerned that Obama's number has dropped and he seems to have lost the lead in electoral votes.

Not even about the day-to-day. I can still pay the rent, most of my bills are current, and there's food in the fridge.

I just realized it now, especially after listening to the right-wing callers today.

It's the future.

I have no confidence in the American Voter. Except for a handful of us around, I just don't see the United States as a very smart place anymore. I'm worried for sure that another election is going to be lost, blown, or stolen.

And that's my worry. If McCain wins.....what will become of us? Not the big-picture "us", as I have no illusions that the rest of the world will put up with us. Hell, they've already shown signs of moving past the United States.

No, it's me personally. My wife. My 7 year old son. My aging parents and in-laws. I'm deathly afraid of what the United States, and indeed the world, is going to look like in 10 years.

And I wonder if we can survive it.

Reading "Rise and Fall" after the 2004 elections was a real eye-opener. I just can't get over how most of Germany just rolled over and let it happen. Those that saw it coming got out, or were rounded up and killed.

Well, I see it coming.

Sorry for the melancholy....but I don't want my son to grow up in a world with a President McCain.

My mother-in-law was from a rich sugar family; they lost their plantation, home, and everything else when Castro nationalized the industry. (They knew each other in Cuba, but left at different times and didn't see each other for 2 years. They married in the US in 1963.)

Yet, they are full-bore, McCain Republicans.

I am not worried such about me. I worry about my friends and family with little people.

And yes I worry, but I still have hope that come november, we will elect Barack Obama as president. THAT is where my energies lie. getting that man elected.

This is NOT '04. This is 2008, this is the first election of this new century.

I worry, but I will not give up. I truly think about my neice and nephew, and my nephew getting ready to make an appearnce in this world. I think about Javi, and Ian... I think about the new little baby that Bob's neice brought into the world a few months ago.

I think about all these little people and I worry, but I know, in my heart that WE... and WE are not just a bubble here on 4F, we are all the people that Barack Obama is bringing together, and WE will NOT let that happen.

That is not optimism, that is resolve. This is NOT over. McCAin has NOT won. What it is, simply put, it is the 7th inning... and we can still win this game if we do not give up.

Come on Tri... if the BoSox can do (twie, in case you did not know... ) , why can't we?

Have you asked them if it has anything to do with the idea that Castro is considered a ideological leftist? I ask because that ties in with the whole commie liberal stigma that Repubs have beaten into people for years.. It's a tough one to crack, considering how brutal Castro was back in his glory days.

If that is the case, ask them to consider the idea that leaders who greedily hunger for power and wealth only use a political position to hide their intentions. It doesn't matter if they are communist or socialist, conservative or liberal. In the end, anyone with such a position is a dictator.

I will say it again, Tri. Secession is a failed policy. Look how well it turned out. Witness the breath taking cultural redneckification of the US! Some how I don't think the once the secessionist movement is crushed by the central government, there will be a flowering of cultural liberalism. First time in a very long time their map has Obama leading in EV's. He also runs his projections off confirmed trendlines instead of daily poll averages (which is what e-v.com uses) so they tend to reflect true momentum more accurately.

Well, that's encouraging news.

I don't know about anyone else, but I have always been, and continue to be, mesmerized by the red/blue split.

I mean, really. Look at the states and where they traditionally fall. There really are two Americas; the "northern, educated liberal" and the "ignorant, southern redneck" stereotypes have surely been reflected in the polling for quite some time.

(of course, so have the "godless, socialist, elitist" and "churchgoing, patriotic, family type" stereotypes...)

Mondo hates when I mention secession....but really, under President McCain, what other choice would we have? The schism has already happened, it wouldn't take too much more to push it over the edge.

I will say it again, Tri. Secession is a failed policy. Look how well it turned out. Witness the breath taking cultural redneckification of the US! Some how I don't think the once the secessionist movement is crushed by the central government, there will be a flowering of cultural liberalism. Speaking of rednecks, when was the last time you were in say New Bedford, MA?

It's all fond memories...

Riding in Mom's Blue Nova, Steely Dan on the radio...playing with Matchbox cars...eating popsicles in the summer....sleeping out in the backyard on summer nights. Good times, man. Good times.

Good morning, bloggers!! (Running late as I had to put my car in the shop.)

BobR, thanks for an excellent entry. Sarge is hearing a lot of the same things from his contacts in Houston, some of whom will be on the Unreported News Radio Show on 1480 KPHX and Nova M Radio at 11 AM Eastern this Sunday. A lot of people are not getting the services that they need - heck, the National Guard has been short on blankets and water for their own members.

For those who want to look, the Daily Headlines are up. There is some good news from Galveston in that repairs are ahead of schedule, but it looks like FEMA has not improved much since Hurricane Katrina.

Or would the cultural and intellectual talent remain in the North while the ignorance of the reactionaries remained in the South? The South would eventually end up worse off economically since they wouldn't have much to offer outside of agriculture.

This morning Senator McCain gave a speech in which his big solution to this worldwide economic crisis was to blame me for it.

This is a guy who's spent nearly three decades in Washington, and after spending the entire campaign saying I haven't been in Washington long enough, he apparently now is willing to assign me responsibility for all of Washington's failures.

Now, I think it's a pretty clear that Senator McCain is a little panicked right now. At this point he seems to be willing to say anything or do anything or change any position or violate any principal to try and win this election, and I've got to say it's kind of sad to see. That's not the politics we need.

It's also been disappointing to see my opponent's reaction to this economic crisis. His first reaction on Monday was to stand up and repeat the line he's said over and over again throughout this campaign -- 'the fundamentals of the economy are strong' -- the comment was so out of touch that even George Bush's White House couldn't agree with it.

And another email about the RI Obama HQ gathering tonight...

The response to the headquarters opening has been unbelievable! So many Rhode Islanders signed up for tonight that we actually had to move the event outside and are now planning a "rally for change" with our state's Democratic leaders

The office will still be open, and you'll definitely have a chance to meet other Obama / Biden volunteers and staff, but I wanted to give you an update as to what will happen when you actually get here.

The event officially begins at 6:00, and when you arrive at our office at 321 South Main Street, you'll be greeted by an intern or volunteer who will direct you to the staging area behind our office. We'll be gathering on the Green along the river on South Water Street for the rally. The speaking program will begin at approximately 6:20 and as of right now, we expect several members of the Congressional delegation and general officers to be on hand.

After the rally, we'll be able to talk to you about ways you can support the campaign and get involved in all that's going to happen over the next 45 days.

See you tonight!

(Oh, and don't forget a jacket or sweatshirt)

Wooooooo go Rhody!

Scoop, I just offered myself up for a field organizer --- told them I am down south, so they can use me as needed down here.

Offered myself up for 2 weeks. Dunno if they will take me, but they have my name for whatever they want.

Say, it is talk like a pirate day.

I bet I'm about the only one here who has an actual pirate associated with his hometown!

Dungeon Rock

Late in the summer of 1658, a sinister ship appeared in Lynn Harbor. The ship was painted black and flew no flag. Word spread quickly among the citizens of the small town of Lynn, Massachusetts: There were pirates in the harbor! A boat was lowered from the ship, a chest was loaded into the boat, and four oarsmen rowed it toward shore. The boat headed up the Saugus River and landed near the Saugus Iron Works. The next day, workers found a note attached to a door, asking to purchase a supply of shackles, hatchets, shovels, and other tools. The note promised that if the requested tools were manufactured and left at a secret location, then a supply of silver would be left in exchange. The tools were made and paid for as promised.

The pirates made camp in a place now known as Pirate's Glen near the Saugus River. British soldiers stationed nearby heard about the pirates and set off to capture them. Three of the buccaneers were captured and hung but the forth, Thomas Veal, escaped into the woods. It was believed that he took the stolen hoard with him as he headed deeper and deeper into the woods. finally arriving at a natural cave in what is now Lynn Woods. Veal lived in the cave for some time and became a member of the Lynn community. The story says he mended shoes for spending money and lived in relative peace with his neighbors. Suddenly, an earthquake rocked the Lynn area, causing a gigantic piece of the rock to tip forward and permanently seal the cave opening. Poor Veal was either trapped inside or crushed to death with his treasure, locked forever in Dungeon Rock.

The remains of Thomas Veal and his treasure were left undisturbed for nearly two hundred years. In the 1830s, two attempts were made to recover the treasure by placing kegs of powder the cave opening and igniting them. Both attempts failed, and the opening to the cave was destroyed, but no riches were found.

More at the link!

(And I have tread Pirate's Glen and have been all the way to the waterline in Dungeon Rock...)

You ever live in a "Swing" state? jesus, all the bullshit you see and read. You talking for a guy for a few minutes thinkin he's alright, then he starts with the B.S. Rightie talking points.

Only in a swing state can you have one of the GAYEST cities in the country, only miles away from a city that fancy's itself a western town, and let the KKK march down it's streets.

It's a bloody mess.

I don't think we should attack Sarah Palin for her Preacher being bat-shit insane.

Palin is not her preacher, we should not judge her on what her bat-shit insane preacher says.

We should judge her on the bat-shit insane things she says.

She did get up on the Church stage and preach. And she did that in her church. Tell me agan why the right went after Barack's reverend? Was it wrong? yes. What about Sarah's church? what about what she has SAID in that church?

Sarah has said HERSELF that she believes the IRaq war was sent from god. THAT is something to attack, and you know what? if that came from her preacher... and her church, we REALLY should question that.

I am not in the mood for a Theocratic nation. Sarah, AND her preacher seem to be advocating that.

So we judge Sarah on what she's said. She has said things very similar to what her preacher has said. So attack her on that. Don't combine her and her preacher. Judge her on herself, not on her preacher or church.

Now, of course feel free to mock Fox for not going after the church, cause that's hypocrisy.

But if we're good people, and good Obama supporters, we will not make attack Sarah Palin because she's got a crazy preacher. We attack Sarah Palin because she's a crazy Alaskan.

(Edit: We will also try to talk straight)
