The McCain Campiagn said there was never a deal:
To address our current financial crisis, John McCain suspended his campaign and returned to Washington, D.C., today to help build a bipartisan consensus for a proposal that would protect the American taxpayer.

Despite today’s news reports, there never existed a “deal,” but merely a proposal offered by a small, select group of Members of Congress. As of right now, there exists only a series of principles, including greater oversight and measures to address CEO pay. However, these principles do not enjoy a consensus in Congress.

At today’s cabinet meeting, John McCain did not attack any proposal or endorse any plan. John McCain simply urged that for any proposal to enjoy the confidence of the American people, stressing that all sides would have to cooperate and build a bipartisan consensus for a solution that protects taxpayers.

However, the Democrats allowed Senator Obama to run their side of the meeting. That did not work as the meeting quickly devolved into a contentious shouting match that did not seek to craft a bipartisan solution.
Interesting that this comes from a man who on Tuesday still had not read the Paulson Proposal, who, by Thursday still had not called or contacted Senator Shelby, who along side Senator Dodd and many others were working to come together, and who had by all accounts worked out a deal that looked a little something like this:

  • Two oversight boards would be formed—one with congressional representation, another would have the power to undo decisions by the Treasury Secretary.

  • The Treasury Secretary would be prohibited from acting in an arbitrary or capricious manner or any way inconsistent with existing law.

  • Regular, detailed reports would be made to Congress disclosing exercise of the Treasury Secretary's authority.

  • An independent inspector general would be set up to monitor the use of the Treasury Secretary's authority.

  • The Government Accountability Office would be required to perform audits to ensure proper use of funds, appropriate internal controls, and to prevent waste, fraud, and abuse.

  • Maximize and coordinate efforts to modify mortgages for homeowners at risk of foreclosure.

  • Loan modifications would be required for mortgages owned or controlled by the federal government.

  • A percentage of future profits from the bailout fund would be made available to the Affordable Housing Fund and the Capital Magnet Fund to meet America's housing needs.
Source.

That was the major Idea of the deal. Until John McCain came riding in to DC. The meeting was a disaster. According to Chris Dodd: [...]That bipartisan meeting with President Bush at the White House on the mortgage rescue plan was nothing short of a disaster. In an interview on the CNN cable news network, Dodd described a meeting in which Democrats were blindsided by a new core mortgage proposal from House Republicans, with the tacit backing of Republican presidential candidate John McCain. "I am not going to sign on to something I just saw this afternoon," he said. Dodd said Republicans and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson had to decide what they wanted to support. The whole meeting "looked like a rescue plan for John McCain," Dodd said. He said he was simply going to pretend that the meeting had never happened.

The Only deal that never was, was the one John McCain wanted, which actually includes cutting MORE corporate taxes and further de-regulates the industry. Still no word on what the blank check is supposed to be.

To say that there was never a deal is just a lie. There is no shading the truth here. I wrote a blog the other night about John MCCain being one of those guys who pulls the fire alarm to get out of a test? Well Last night, John McCain called in a bomb threat. He and the fringe right GOP are putting their party first in this very serious economic crisis. People still think he is a maverick? A moderate? A heroic POW?

I think he is a disengenuous politician that puts himself first, party second... and somewhere down the line, his country. And make no mistake, if he is elected, it will be his country, not ours.

Shame on you John McCain.
:peace: and

Morning, comrades!

I'm curious about the deal-breaker yesterday. Our congressman (Barney Frank, D-MA) has been a bit bemused this morning about having to referee Republican infighting. But the way it was described on NECN this morning was that a group of "conservative Republicans" torpedoed the deal.

Conservative how? Non-Neocons? GOPers that don't march with Bush? Old-school republicans that think it cost too much?

If they've stopped it, perhaps for the good of the USA at the expense of the party, president, and candidate...that's pretty heady stuff.

I ws writing the blog, went out for a quick smoke, and when I came back inside, Bobber says "I F*cked up."

I asked concerned about a big F-up, and he says, "your pills look just like mine. I didn't know why I left them on the counter, and I didn't know my script was so low. and then as I swallowed the pill, I knew what happened"

Keep in mind the Dentist gave 4 of these pills one for each of my appointments. They are the MAx dosage in a pill. I have had friends that take about .10 mg for day to day anxiety. He'll be a gonner for most of the day. Bright side, he will be nice a calm for the debate.

McCain jumped the shark with his "suspend the campaign" stunt....it's about time they smell the blood in the water.

Anybody remember 1984? This is the kind of landslide we need to see this year. (for our guy, of course!)

Michaela Heyer, a police spokeswoman, said that, contrary to initial reports, the airplane was not stormed by police. “The arrest was entirely unspectacular,” she said. There was “no indication” that either man was carrying explosives or weapons.

Ah, and I wonder if the M$M is going to issue a retraction? Every story I heard about this today states that the plane was "stormed" and there was a dramatic confrontation...

10. I have to wax all 13 cars that night.

8. 9/11

7. Taller candidate usually wins and these podiums don’t let me hide my orange crate

6. Debate Commission disallowed use of the phrase “My Friends”

The Senator's campaign plane is a Boeing 737-400, rated with a cruising speed of 514 mph.

So, direct flight-time is 1:25. Since he'd be on a priority flight, he'd have preference in both takeoff and landing, so factor in at most another 45 minutes total. That gives me a complete cycle time of 2:10.

With the debate scheduled for 9pm, McCain would have a wheels-up time of 6 pm if he's to make it. (factoring in ground-travel and TV prep time.)

Good morning, bloggers!!! Excellent blog entry, Raine!!

I hope that everyone is well, and that BobR will be fine. (Raine, please resist the urge to put his hand in a bucket of warm water even if he might not notice it today. Now, if it was John McCain, I would feel no such compulsion.)

Here in Phoenix, I am busy setting up substitute teaching and plan to volunteer at Obama's headquarters later. Sorry that I have been away, but I have been running around a lot. (I spent four hours with paperwork earlier this week for one school district.)

As for McCain, he is being very dramatic. Indeed, I think he is riding the drama llama - something that makes about as much sense as McCain's actions.

http://www.ontariocountyfair.org/pix/2002%20pics/Winner%20of%20Llama%20%20Costume%20Contest%20m.JPG

Maybe we should call John McCain Sir Flipflops-a-lot. (Maybe we should convince him to do all of his campaign appearances on a trampoline, for truth in advertising purposes.)

By the way, the UNN Daily Headlines are up, and there will be more after breakfast.

Hmm, Raine, I just thought of something. BobR may now be more coherent and alert than McCain might be tonight.

I guess the same first name confuses every one. Naomi Klein did No Logo and Shock Doctrine and she's Canadian. Naomi Wolf is American and besides the Beauty Myth, she has written several recent books reflecting how the neo-cons have peed on the Constitution. Naomi Klein has largely focused on Economics like her September, 2004 Harper's article on how the Neo-Cons were turning Iraq into a playground for neo-conservative economic policies with the unregulated economy.

My modified drinking game for tonight:

- If McCain shows up, take a shot and relax your left eye so it's looking downwards. If he doesn't, take two shots and do your best imitation of Ben Stein saying "Bueller... Bueller... Bueller..."

Take a sip/gulp of beer whenever..

- McCain says "my friends", "9/11", "POW", "Russia" or "surge"

- Obama says "hope", "Al Qaeda", "Bin Laden", "Darfur", "Sudan", "Afghanistan" or "Pakistan"

- Either candidate brings up the cold war or Vietnam.

Chug a beer or do a shot whenever...

- McCain says "Bin Laden", "Al Qaeda" "war with Iran", "Afghanistan", "Radical Islam", "leave Iraq with honor", "bring the troops home with honor" or "missile shield"

- Obama says "nuclear proliferation", "South Ossetia" or "Georgia"

- Either candiate brings up expansion of NATO or North Korea.

KUOX (34°23'04"N 89°32'13"W)

Heading: 248° (W)

740 mi

The Senator's campaign plane is a Boeing 737-400, rated with a cruising speed of 514 mph.

So, direct flight-time is 1:25. Since he'd be on a priority flight, he'd have preference in both takeoff and landing, so factor in at most another 45 minutes total. That gives me a complete cycle time of 2:10.

With the debate scheduled for 9pm, McCain would have a wheels-up time of 6 pm if he's to make it. (factoring in ground-travel and TV prep time.)

Tri, have factored in the deliciously awful rush hour traffic in DC. I don't think he gets to clear a lane to go from Capitol Hill down Pennsylvania Ave to get to I66 to pick up the Dulles access road. That is a at least a trip of an hour to get to the access road. At least Grampy can use the HOV portion of 66 in Arlington in his limo. There will be at least three people in the car. So Grampy has from right now about about four hours.

The other scenario is better for McCain. If the Straight Talk Express plane version is a 737 he can hope on 395 get off at GW Parkway and get to National faster. I've flown on 737 out of National.

Tri so what kine plane does Grampy have.

Nice planes.

I find it kind of funny that Obama has his slogan and a large O on his plane.

And McCain has his name plastered all over it.

Comment by TriSec on 09/26/2008 17:18:45
Oh, and John McCain was flying on an A-320 during the primaries...a European-built aircraft from the same company that he wants to award the tanker contract to. Sarah Palin's plane is an Embraer ERJ-145 (built in Brazil.)

Obama has always flown aboard an American-built aircraft; Joe Biden is also flying aboard a Boeing (a 737 like McCain's.)

Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

The United States started the petroleum reserve in 1975 after oil supplies were cut off during the 1973-74 oil embargo, to mitigate future temporary supply disruptions for example fallout with Relations dealing in oil or World War. According to the World Factbook, the United States imports a net 12 million barrels (1,900,000 m3) of oil a day (MMbd), so the SPR holds about a 58-day supply. However, the maximum total withdrawal capability from the SPR is only 4.4 million barrels (700,000 m3) per day, making it a 160 + day supply.

If Palin resigns as the VP candidate, I think that Obama and Biden should demand to debate with a new pick. The problem I see for McCain is that they would be hard pressed to pick someone like Palin who would satisfy the evangelical Republicans and be a media sensation. I think we should remember Chris Matthews' phrase of Razzle Dazzle but let's remember that McCain is a Flim-Flam Man.

Uh Oh.... Palin Lost Kathleen Parker from NRO....

[...]

Yes, she recently met and turned several heads of state as the United Nations General Assembly convened in New York. She was gracious, charming and disarming. Men swooned. Pakistan’s president wanted to hug her. (Perhaps Osama bin Laden is dying to meet her?)

And, yes, she has common sense, something we value. And she’s had executive experience as a mayor and a governor, though of relatively small constituencies (about 6,000 and 680,000, respectively).

Finally, Palin’s narrative is fun, inspiring and all-American in that frontier way we seem to admire. When Palin first emerged as John McCain’s running mate, I confess I was delighted. She was the antithesis and nemesis of the hirsute, Birkenstock-wearing sisterhood — a refreshing feminist of a different order who personified the modern successful working mother.

Palin didn’t make a mess cracking the glass ceiling. She simply glided through it.

It was fun while it lasted.

Palin’s recent interviews with Charles Gibson, Sean Hannity, and now Katie Couric have all revealed an attractive, earnest, confident candidate. Who Is Clearly Out Of Her League.

No one hates saying that more than I do. Like so many women, I’ve been pulling for Palin, wishing her the best, hoping she will perform brilliantly. I’ve also noticed that I watch her interviews with the held breath of an anxious parent, my finger poised over the mute button in case it gets too painful. Unfortunately, it often does. My cringe reflex is exhausted.

Palin filibusters. She repeats words, filling space with deadwood. Cut the verbiage and there’s not much content there. Here’s but one example of many from her interview with Hannity: “Well, there is a danger in allowing some obsessive partisanship to get into the issue that we’re talking about today. And that’s something that John McCain, too, his track record, proving that he can work both sides of the aisle, he can surpass the partisanship that must be surpassed to deal with an issue like this.”

When Couric pointed to polls showing that the financial crisis had boosted Obama’s numbers, Palin blustered wordily: “I’m not looking at poll numbers. What I think Americans at the end of the day are going to be able to go back and look at track records and see who’s more apt to be talking about solutions and wishing for and hoping for solutions for some opportunity to change, and who’s actually done it?”

If BS were currency, Palin could bail out Wall Street herself.

If Palin were a man, we’d all be guffawing, just as we do every time Joe Biden tickles the back of his throat with his toes. But because she’s a woman — and the first ever on a Republican presidential ticket — we are reluctant to say what is painfully true.

What to do?

McCain can’t repudiate his choice for running mate. He not only risks the wrath of the GOP’s unforgiving base, but he invites others to second-guess his executive decision-making ability. Barack Obama faces the same problem with Biden.

Only Palin can save McCain, her party, and the country she loves. She can bow out for personal reasons, perhaps because she wants to spend more time with her newborn. No one would criticize a mother who puts her family first.

Do it for your country.

================================================

:thud: THAT --- my ---- friends is straight talk....

The only problem is, the reason he picked Palin was for a cynical ploy for white women voters. He's not gonna drop her, cause nothing will turn off those puma assholes more than McCain dropping Palin. I think they picked her more because of the lack of enthusiasm amongst the Fundie base which wasn't too fond of McCain. And they were hoping that PUMAs were stupid enough to not notice her reactionary politics and just knee-jerk support her because she's a woman.
