"THAT one"...
It was a tossed off comment in the middle of a sentence. It wasn't the centerpiece of McCain's response. During the debate, McCain was trying to make a point, and - to distinguish himself from Obama - pointed in his direction (without looking at him) and referred to Obama as "THAT one". It was dismissive in a very insulting way and it highlighted McCain's disdain for Obama.

Could this be the "macacca" moment of his campaign?
For those with short memories, in the 2004 election, former senator George Allen (R-VA) pointed at a member of the press and said "say hello to Maccaca over there". That particular member of the press was NOT white. This dismissive tossed-off comment highlighted Allen's casual bigotry and arrogance, and may have cost him the election.
In McCain's case, it is just another clear instance of his disdain for Obama. He certainly didn't help himself post-debate when he ignored Obama's friendly overture of a handshake:

These may be little, but they offer glimpses into the soul of McCain, and the view is not pretty. They display an angry little man, furious that he is being beaten by someone he clearly considers his lesser. Whether that opinion is based in bigotry, Obama's age and short time in DC, or is just a result of McCain's inflated self-importance cannot be known with any certainty... but it certainly reflects on how his temperament would affect his potential presidency.
His supporters are worse, of course, and there seems to be a certain downward spiral of decency and decorum as the hatred feeds on itself. At a recent McCain rally, a supporter clearly refers to Obama as a terrorist, and McCain just goes with the flow:

Where McCain opens the door and lets the miscreants in, Palin grabs a bullhorn and hollars "get yer red meat her, yoo betcha!". As noted by Dana Milbanks:
That last comment is telling. When a politician exudes hatred, his (or her) supporters take that hate and amplify it and spew it back out. These audience reactions are a direct result of McCain and Palin winking and saying "it's okay to hate. Look at me." It's a license to kill. Fortunately, the secret service is taking that "kill him" comment seriously and are investigating.
So while the ugly core of McCain's supporters will abosrb the "THAT one" comment and use it as fuel for their hatred, one can only hope that through media and word of mouth, McCain's casual dismissal of his opponent will open the eyes of the undecideds, and help them realize what sort of person McCain really is.

One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, "Sit down, boy."

The reception had been better in Clearwater, where Palin, speaking to a sea of "Palin Power" and "Sarahcuda" T-shirts, tried to link Obama to the 1960s Weather Underground. "One of his earliest supporters is a man named Bill Ayers," she said. ("Boooo!" said the crowd.) "And, according to the New York Times, he was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that, quote, 'launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and our U.S. Capitol,' " she continued. ("Boooo!" the crowd repeated.)

I had a thought from last night....McCain was on and on about being a "cool hand at the tiller". I suppose it's an idiom of some kind, but realistically does anyone outside of the sailing community have any idea what a tiller is these days?
And of course, Edward J. Smith and William M. Murdoch were considered the most experienced, 'coolest hands on the tiller" back in their day, and look at what happened to them...

Actually, they left by about 1045, according to Rach last night.. she said that the Span made emntion of the time they left the building... it kept it's camera rolling for a bit... and according to reports the Obamas were there condiderably longer.

So.. McBitter didn't formally drop the n-bomb, so I managed to stay quite sober last night. But cmon Johnny boy - are you seriously that pissed off that you've lost your two best chances to become President while you're still alive?!
Let's think about this for a second. McCain ran in 2000 and the race came down to him and Dubya.. and he got beat out by that numbnuts moron mommas-boy after a bullshit racist campaign that insulted his adopted child. He watches from his sideline perch in the Senate where he's forced to watch - and by ideology to participate - in the demolition of this country's moral and economic foundations. He watches as his party's fate leads them to the gutter, and then to the exit door of the halls of power.
And then he comes back now, years later, addled by age and illness and fury over the chance that was stolen from him by a fucking idiot. And he watches the country pass him by, because of that idiot's legacy, for someone so full of energy and promise and intelligence and sheer force of will.
And he stands there, the anger rising in him day after day, to the point where he can't even say the man's name or even shake his hand after a spirited discussion of the country's issues and concerns.
No, I don't think John McCain is a racist. I think he's just another victim of the Bush Legacy - a man whose best chance to satisfy his greatest ambition was spirited away by a imbecile, and whose second best chance happened after his own time had run out.

All politics aside, wasn't Teddy the youngest man in history to assume the office of the Presidency? If he's McCain's hero, then shouldn't he not have any issue with Sen. Obama assuming the office, being somewhat older than Teddy? (Of course, the second Sarah joined the ticket, you'll notice the "experience" talking point went poof.)

You know, I thought McCain's only "genuine" moment last night came at the end...
When Tom Brokaw (worst moderator ever) told both of the candidates that they were in the way of the teleprompter, and McCain looked truly concerned and scampered out of the way...that seemed real.

Morning all. Got back from work late and caught snippets of the debate last night and this a.m.
WOW! Do we need a towel to wipe the floor from the sweat of John McCain? What an angry little old man/gnome!!! In almost every clip I've seen he's either gritting his teeth or sitting in his chair looking at anything but Obama. While Obama seemed respectful.

McCain was very vague last night - save for the buying back the home program which seems to have alienated even more of his conservative base.
People want to know what a candidate will do for America. Of course, in the case of John McCain, it may be what he will do to America between naps.

The Republicans have absolutely poisoned the well of intellect, disparaging the science related to global warming and demonizing colleges as "bastions of liberalism". I keep waiting for them to demand a "Conservative Arts" program to counter the traditional Liberal Arts degree.
They appoint heads of depts. based on the applicants' ideology (and strict adherence to same) rather than training, experience, or resumé. They view with suspicion anyone smarter than them, because intelligence intimidates them.
I hope an Obama presidency can restore a sense of education as goal rather than a liability.
