While Joe the Plumber WANTS, America NEEDS.
Author: Raine    Date: 10/16/2008 12:37:06

"Congressman John Lewis ... Made allegations that Sarah Palin and I were somehow associated with the worst chapter in American history, segregation. ... That, to me, was hurtful... ."
John McCain

"I think the American people are less interested in our hurt feelings during the course of the campaign than addressing the issues that matter to them so deeply."
Barack Obama

From the Front Page today of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. That says it all, to me, about last night. One man stood before America, cool collected and ready to lead. One man stood before America twitchy, mean, nasty and lying. This is about Wants and Needs.

While Americans watch their 401K's disappear, John McCain offered not much more than a fascination for some man named 'Joe the Plumber', William Ayers, Acorn and John Lewis. It was clear last night that John McCain is more interested in attacking than helping to get America back on track. His body language said it all. It was painful to look at. He was angry at being a continuation of *ush, he was angry that John Lewis called him out... Look, Barack Obama did last night what I had hoped he would do... he called John McCain on everything that he has done, and Grampy had nothing but self-righteous indignation.

Now, about Joe... He is the most famous plumber in America right now. His name is Joe Wurzelbacher*. This might an interesting read about him. He's been at this company for (according to Grampy) for 10-12 years--- and he can't buy it? You really think he wants to?

Somehow Joe the Plumber (not Six Pack, his cousin) wants to blame Barack Obama for that. It simply is not logical to blame policies that are not in place yet for Joe's unfortunate situation. Besides, this is not about Joe the Plumber, this is about putting our Country, back on track so people like Joe (and you and me and our parents and grandparents and children) never have to worry about losing everything -- ever again. I have nothing against the 'wants' of people like Joe the Plumber -- we ALL have wants -- but I think it is time to start getting back what we are losing right before our eyes before we focus on one man who "wants" when he already HAS a job in this economy. What America NEEDS is more jobs. Joe the Plumber already has one, I am still trying to find the employment status of Joe Six-Pack, altho early reports indicate that he may be working for a Budweiser distributor.

That might be cold of me, but that is how I am feeling. John McCain doesn't really understand that fact that many of us out here can't find work. HE doesn't truly care, actually. He cares about winning. He cares about himself. John McCain never lost a job, and he never bought a company. John McCain missed that very important point last night. Too many people in America don't even have the luxury of wanting to buy a company because they are not even counted in the unemployment numbers. Too many people are worried about putting FOOD on the table. Too many people just want to get from one day to the next. Owning a business is a luxury for far too many Americans. Gramps doesn't get that.

He wants you to worry about Joe the Plumber, and how John Lewis hurt his feelings. I don't care about John McCain's feelings. He can pick up the phone and call John Lewis if he is so hurt, he can personally LOAN Joe the Plumber the money for a business -- I don't care.

What I care about is having a leader that asks us ALL to roll up our sleeves and get this country back on track.

19 days to go, we can do this, YES WE CAN!

:peace: and
Raine

From my post in the stub..

Quote by Scoopster:

Morning all you crazy drunkards!

So yeah.. I fell asleep before the debate and woke up with about 20 minutes left, so I only got a chance to see the extra-unhinged McCain give that ridiculous and unbelieveable answer about abortion, the stupid answer about wanting to close schools that are "failing" and the whole not knowing the difference between autism and down's syndrome.

Anyways yeah Johnny Boy.. if you're gonna say "health" is how Obama and the Dems try to "killing babies", then I'm gonna say that closing "failing schools" is just the batshit crazy Republican way of you saying "them negroes don't need no edumacation".

Oh yah and one more thing - McCain thinks being certified to teach is not necessary?? He thinks people who've been in the military should just be allowed to go straight into a classroom, pick up the chalk and start molding young minds?! NO FUCKING THANKS.

Rewatching the debate now.. McCain claims that he's repudiated any bad remarks that have been made against Obama?!

And to this day he has STILL not denounced Rev. Hagee, Rev. Phelps, Pat Robertson, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, Michael Savage, etc...

He's stood up once. ONCE in his almost two year campaign to denounce the remarks and attitudes demonstrated by people attending his rallies. And he didn't do it until the third to last week of the campaign.

And the next day he and his VP choice were back to the same BS encouraging a mob and letting them shout KILL HIM among other nasty comments. And then he has the nerve to claim that John Lewis wasn't correct for making a comparison between the campaigns run by McCain and Wallace.

And yes, Obama said during the debate that Lewis' comparison of Wallace and McCain's campaigns was inappropriate. Well guess what - OBAMA IS WRONG AND MCCAIN IS A FUCKING RACIST WHO IS INCITING WHITE-SHEET SYTLE RIOTS ACROSS THIS COUNTRY, JUST LIKE GEORGE WALLACE DID.

And, you know, the thing about a Republican... he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be living... until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. So...I'm curious. Social Security is a tax, right? i mean we are taxed, the money is put in a pool than redistributed. And it was a tax implemented during the Depression by FDR. so someone "raised" taxes during an economic down turn since hoover.

BREAKING on MSNBC: The Republican Party is challenging the Ohio Voter registration Database.

Comment by Raine on 10/16/2008 14:37:05
From the NYT:

More than 200,000 registered Ohio voters may be blocked from casting regular ballots on Election Day because of a federal appeals court decision on Tuesday requiring the disclosure of lists of voters whose names did not match those on government databases, state election officials and voting experts said.

Experts say a federal order in an election-law suit could result in the casting of more provisional ballots. Jennifer Brunner, Ohio’s secretary of state, has fought the suit.

The court decision requires Jennifer Brunner, the Ohio secretary of state, to provide the names to local election officials by Friday. Once the local officials have the names, they may require these voters to cast provisional ballots rather than regular ones, and they may ask partisan poll workers to challenge these voters on Election Day. Both possibilities could cause widespread problems when the voters show up at the polls.

Concerns about those problems led the Ohio Attorney General’s Office to file an appeal of the decision to the United States Supreme Court on behalf of Ms. Brunner on Wednesday night.

The state’s appeal went directly to Justice John Paul Stevens because he oversees the Sixth Circuit. It argued that the Republican Party had nearly two years to raise complaints about the process of screening voter registrations and failed to do so. Any changes now to the process would disrupt preparations for the election, it contended.

It’s Really, Really, Really Over

To my eyes and ears, Obama destroyed McCain on substance as well as style last night. Obama had clear substantive answers to every question, he seemed calm and measured, and his closing statement was as devastating as McCain's was rambling. Sure, he took a few liberties with the facts--even his own campaign is saying that the average family will save $2,500 in total from his health plan, not $2,500 in premiums alone--but this was a confident debate performance in which Obama again and again reached out to independents with a call for a new kind of politics and drove home his advantage on economic policy.

McCain, on the other hand, really had a disastrous performance. Even if he hadn't looked as if he were undergoing some kind of strange, recurrent seizure, he threw out his points in staccato fire without pausing or linking them together. On substance, he didn't know the basics of Obama's health and tax plans after three debates, leaving himself open to looking ill-informed. McCain was very strong in the first debate, on his favored foreign-policy ground, but his performances have steadily degenerated since. This was his worst--and it's the final nail in an already tightly sealed coffin.

By the way, we political scientists generally subscribe to the "minimal effects" view of campaigns, in which both sides are savvy enough that their efforts cancel each other out. And this certainly seems like an election in which the fundamentals have swamped any campaign strategies either side has used. But I think it's time to recognize that Obama has done something more profound in this cycle than simply run a smart campaign; he is showing that the old Republican strategy on economic policy of calling for tax cuts and criticizing government, while thowing mud in every other area, has real limits when the other side directly confronts it with arguments for "investment" and more carefully targeted tax policies.

We can only hope that it really is the end of the Karl Rove era in American politics. It's certainly the end of John McCain's campaign.

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) released a letter today outlining his findings after reviewing contracts Sargent's oil company brokered with the U.S. Department of Defense.

They aren't pretty.

"I have been conducting oversight of procurement problems in Iraq since the war began over five years ago. The IOTC contracts stand out for the extent of the company's apparent profiteering," Waxman wrote. "Of the $210 million in profits received by the company, at least one third -- $70 million -- appears to have benefited a single individual: Mr. Sargeant."

At issue were the prices Sargeant's company, the International Oil Trading Company, charged for jet fuel. Waxman said the company offered the highest prices of six companies to bid for the military contract, but won because it was the only one with the blessing of the Jordanian royal family to deliver fuel over Jordanian land.

Waxman says that if the oil contracts Sargeant's company had been awarded to the lowest bidders, the taxpayers could have saved over $180 million.

John Zogby Statement on Political Message Testing

There have been attacks in recent blog posts concerning survey questions Zogby International asked on behalf of a client. The client is Newsmax, a well-known conservative magazine.

The questions were legitimately worded message tests to accurately determine voter sentiment concerning charges leveled against Sen. Barack Obama. Understand that we at Zogby International conduct a lot of similar research for left, right and center interests and fairly believe that our data is part of a broader process that serves to illuminate real voter sentiment—warts and all. In many instances over the years, voters have strongly disagreed with the interests of our clients and at other times they have agreed—this is what good research is all about.

Our process provides a much more beneficial role to the public discourse than the one-dimensional, adolescent rantings of many blogs, both left and right.

The Client was NEWSMAX. you know what I think? I think EVERYONE should ask EVERY time who a pollsters client is.

I'm guessing he has no problem making use of the government services that everyone else's tax dollars provide... >P

McCain to Appear with Virgina Head of the RNC.

Earlier this week, Time magazine’s Karen Tumulty reported on how Jeffrey Frederick, the chairman of the Virginia Republican party, gave GOP volunteers talking points on “the connection between Barack Obama and Osama bin Laden.” “Both have friends that bombed the Pentagon,” Frederick told 30 volunteers. “That is scary.”
yeah, THAT guy.

About McCain's eyes....ol' Quint said it best back about 1975 or so...

The ocean turns red, and despite all the poundin' and the hollerin', they all come in and they... rip you to pieces.

Why in Blues Brothers are Jake and Elwood trying to raise the money for taxes on the orphanage where they were raised? It is a Catholic charity and tax exempt. Discuss.

Did the orphanage endorse a political candidate, thus losing their non-exempt status?

[I expect Mondo to leap in his car one day and drive to this fair Commonwealth to dope-slap me. I uh, have never seen Blues Brothers end to end. Add it to the list.]

NBC running with the Joe the Plumber story. These are the items that they included in the story (which they wouldn't even say if it were verified)

- Said the name really matches the name "Samuel Joseph W-hateverhisnameis"

- There's no one with that name registered as a plumber in PA

- He doesn't make enough to be taxed under Obama's plan.

Nothing about the whole related to Keating thing.
