Libertarian Saturday
Author: TriSec    Date: 10/18/2008 12:41:27

Good Morning!

With just 16 days to go, I'm feeling less and less like a Libertarian these days. Most of you probably know that I changed my registration back to the Big D over April vacation this year...specifically to cast a proper vote for the Senator from Illinois. I have also just joined the Waltham Democratic City Committee...I attended my first meeting this past week and have signed up for some phone-banking down the strectch.

In any case...I'm wondering just how much longer the ol' motivation is going to be with me for this little column. I have been writing it for at least 2 years now, but seeing that Your Loyal TriSec has recently "flipped"....doesn't seem right, somehow.

Nevertheless, I can't let comedy gold go by unreported.

We hope that Joe the Plumber's 15 minutes are almost up. Both sides have had a field day with this poor republican plant working stiff from Ohio. Bob Barr, Libertarian for president, has also noticed him, but he thinks his alter-ego should be getting some headlines.

"'Joe the Plumber' doesn't need Senators Barack Obama or John McCain'" says Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party's nominee for president. "He needs 'Bob the Builder.'"

"While Senators Obama and McCain seek only to put government patches on today's problems, 'Joe the Plumber' needs a leader who will rebuild our government into one that serves the interests of the people; not the interests of Washington," says Barr. "Senator McCain wants to make 'Joe the Plumber' responsible for his neighbor's mortgage, and Senator Obama wants to tax 'Joe the Plumber' for being successful. Both Senators Obama and McCain want to spend 'Joe the Plumber's' tax dollars on wasteful projects, such as the $850 billion dollar bailout of Wall Street."

"Senators Obama and McCain are no friend to 'Joe the Plumber,'" says Barr. "But 'Bob the Builder is.' 'Bob the Builder' says that Joe should be able to keep the fruits of his labor, and shouldn't be responsible for the mistakes of other people. 'Bob the Builder' says Joe shouldn't be asked to shoulder Wall Street, and shouldn't have his son sent off to die in a war that should have never been started. 'Bob the Builder' wants to build a government that is limited to its Constitutional authority, spends less of Joe's money and stays out of Joe's life."

"America needs a builder, not a patch-job," says Barr. "Senators Obama and McCain are a part of our problems—they are not the solution. America needs a leader with the vision and the courage to stand up against government, and truly reform it, where it once again begins serving the interest of every Joe and Jane across America. America needs Bob Barr."

Libertarian Party presidential candidate Bob Barr represented the 7th District of Georgia in the U. S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003.

All fine and good, "Bob the Builder", rebuilding America, right?

Well.....for most Americans with children, Bob the Builder means this guy:

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005NHSN.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

But....much like his Republican counterpart, Mr. Barr neglected to do some vetting. Mr. Builder is a Democrat! (Thanks to Raine for the link...)

Bob the Builder is a construction contractor, specializing in masonry repair. He is an early supporter of Barack Obama, mainly due to his use of Bob’s catchphrase (Can we fix it? Yes we can!). The more Bob learns about Obama and his policies, the more enthusiastic he is about his candidacy.

Bob’s main concerns are the effect the coming recession will have on his business and the cost of providing health insurance to his employees. He believes that Obama’s plans for health insurance and the economy offer the best hope for the future.

So....we're apparently left with a choice in candidate, Bob the Builder, the Incredible Hulk (You wouldn't like McCain when he's angry) or "Normal Man". Who are you voting for, hmm?

So...let's veer off the Libertarian vein now and take a look at one of the truly delightful seasons on the Northern Tier...fall!

All through the month of October is harvest fair season throughout New England. The Big E, Topsfield, Fryeburg, and a host of smaller and lesser known town fairs have been going on for several weeks now. If you live in a growing area of the country, you've probably got one, too. Make sure you get out and see one; it's our last link in an urban society to our farming and agricultural past. Besides, where else are you going to see something like this?

[Disclaimer - that's last year's winning pumpkin, weighing in at over 1600 lbs.]

This year's winner was a mere 1400 pounds, but it's going out in a blaze of glory.

TOPSFIELD — One comedian made his way smashing watermelons, but David Letterman's next big antic could be to explode the 1,464-pound pumpkin that won at the Topsfield Fair.

The details were still sketchy yesterday, but Letterman wants to wreck, in grand style, the winning pumpkin raised by Oakham's Wes Dwelly. The giant pumpkins are grown out of pride rather than for food, but the idea still left a bad taste in the mouth of Rick Skrzypczak of Barre, whose pumpkin took second place at the fair this year.

"David Letterman contacted me first, and I told him I was not interested in doing that, so he contacted Wes. It's just something I don't think should be done to a pumpkin," Skrzypczak said. "I've worked hard on it all season long."

Dwelly said he's still trying to finalize the details — the pumpkin may be exploded around Oct. 27 and aired on television on Halloween night, he said. That's assuming the pumpkin lasts through the month and survives transport to Coney Island. Someone would scoop out the seeds and insert dynamite, he said.

"I have mixed emotions about it," he said. "What we do with pumpkins, when you get in close to fall of the year, we put blankets on 'em every night, you treat 'em like kids. It becomes almost like part of the family. Having them blown up in some ways doesn't seem right, but we know they're not going to last forever anyways, and it is something that people like to watch."

Chip Howe of Paxton said people have started pouring into Howe's Farm & Garden to see Dwelly's winner and two giants from Skrzypczak, at 1,399 and 1,284 pounds.

"It's unbelievable how good they look together. It's just awesome," he said.

The other great thing this time of year is....apples! I'm of the opinion that a Macintosh is no good unless you pick it yourself. It's late in the season for Macs, but there should still be plenty of fruit hanging around this weekend, and several orchards in Massachusetts start picking Fujis this weekend. We're also getting a pumpkin for halloween from Shelburne Farm today.

Speaking of pumpkins, do you have your Barack'O lantern yet? Check out the pumpkin stencils and think about putting one on your doorstep this season! (psst...these are legit, straight from the campaign and their "Yes, we carve!" website...)

So. We'll re-visit our libertarian haunts again, but for now everyone enjoy their weekend!

Day 14 of 14 in a row at work today. Can't wait for Sunday to actually get some rest.

Can't decide whether I should watch the Sox tonight or not. They seem to do better when I don't. Not that it's likely I'll be able to stay awake until Sunday "morning"

A touch screen should be calibrated before use, in these cases when the thing is powered up a calibration routine should be forced before any votes can be counted. I deal with many products with touch screens where I have to calibrate many, many times because I'm powering the equipment up and down. Essentially you're presented a place to touch in each corner and maybe in the center. Even with a fairly complex screen with small buttons I don't have many problems at all. Of course since these are medical products they're designed to WORK PROPERLY!

Ideally, these things should be using some sort of stylus (so you don't have to worry about fat and thin fingers) and the selection buttons should be big enough so even if it's slighly miscalibrated the vote should be correctly counted.

Of course, there are ways to deliberately miscalibrate if you know where to touch.

And cosnidering how all these voting machine "errors" always cause the vote to flip from D to R, you can take a guess on the reason why they are not "working".

All you have to do is design the positions on the screen "properly" and miscalibrate "properly"

You know, even after hitting these touch screens with 15,000 volt static discharges, they don't seem to have any problem holding their calibration. I mean, the device itself may crash (8000 volts is the standard test where the device must continue to work properly, we go to 15000 to be sure, but at that point all we care about is that the hardware survives), but the touchscreen still knows where it is.

Afternoon Everybodee or is it time for ?

Over 100,000 at an Obama rally in St. Louis I've been working on a rather extensive post over at my blog that focuses on the assault on Indigenous peoples in the western hemisphere (Alaska, Colombia and Bolivia). Please wander over and check it out - thanks mucho. It was inspired in part by Obama's thoughtful response (as opposed to McSame's knee jerk enthusiastic support) to the Colombian Free Trade Agreement. That and Palin's horrible record on Alaskan Natives (in spite of the first dude's claim to Yup'ik heritage). So Raine and Mondo, I gather that you both have seen "W." How was it? Is it worth the money ($8.00 on the old credit card)? Hope you all have a great day. Thanks for the fun post Tri!

Cheers,

Heya crew,

I just signed a petition calling for the censure of BatSh*t Crazy Michele Bachmann over at the following site: Censure Michele Bachmann. if you haven't seen her highly incendiary remarks, a clip is available at the site. Here is my comment that I left on the petition:

Call for the removal of FASCIST Michele Bachmann!

I am writing to you all with the most urgency that I believe that action must be taken immediately to remove Michele Bachmann from Congress. The remarks that she made yesterday on Chris Matthews' show reveal that she has no understanding of the history of this country. I fully support freedom of speech, however I am loath to support freedom of ignorance which is what Bachmann displayed in abundance in her comments. She apparently has no idea of the role that dissent has played in the foundation and evolution of our country. If anyone deserves investigation, it is Michele Bachmann herself. Please at the very least censure her and her highly inappropriate statements. Thank you.

Cheers,

mfaye

Back in 2003, we were in Palm Beach and had to take a very young Javi to JFK Memorial's ER for an ear infection..

While doing the registration, the young lady asked us what county we were from.

Good character studies. very on point as to what happened historically, it would be good for Americans to see.

I enjoyed it too. Some things were glossed over that I think could have used more examination, and other things had more detail than necessary. It never really explained why a goody-two-shoes like Laura was attracted to him. It showed what an evil fucker Cheney is. It made Dubya's dad and Colin Powell look a little too saintly.

But overall, it really showed how Bush's approach to life in general (and the presidency in particular) was that he felt entitled to everything appreciated nothing, and never really earned anything in his life. It was a pretty scathing indictment of him.

It was okay, but I don't think I learned any revelations about W. It seems as if Stone wanted to make "George W. Bush for Dummies." Much of the stuff that was covered were things I already knew, the drinking, the failing upward. The callow sense of entitlement. I do agree that Stone let Colin Powell off to lightly. If he had a pair he would have resigned over the war.

It all the press Stone was going on about you think you Bush, but you don't. Well Ollie ya didn't tell me anything I didn't know. I think this is because I like the rest of us here have been actually paying attention for the past 8 years. We know what a dick Bush is. We know how awful his appointees have been. We know how corrupt they have been.
