11.5.08, the King Reflection Pool, Atlanta, Georgia

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

You can read the entire speach here. On Tuesday, November 4, 2008, because of the work, the message and the dream of Reverend King and his message of nonviolent resistance, we elected a president based upon the content of his character, not his skin color.

This isn't as much about racism as it is about civil rights in our country, and we - as a nation - took a wonderful giant step forward this week.

We are still a far from perfect nation. We still must fight for the equal rights of our GLBT brothers and sisters. We still must fight for the our constitution that has been so ravaged over the past 8 years. We still must keep pushing forward. That is our task, that is what we must keep working for, because until everyone achieves the same rights in America, none of us truly are equal. For over 230 years, this has been the struggle of America, and we will still work for a more perfect union. That is the thing about perfection, we must strive for it, knowing that we will never achieve it, but - in striving, in doing so - we become better humans.

This week, this election day, we took a giant step in coming together and for once, truly, for once... we said that skin color and race no longer matter when we choose a president. The message that this sends to children is probably something we can barely fathom. The children of this generation will grow up in a world where they won't have to be amazed and stunned and overjoyed that America elected it's first black president. Because of the Reverend King and all those who walked with him, the ones who dared to dream, the ones who were beaten, the ones who went to jail, the ones who died... OUR children and grandchildren can enjoy a luxury that many only thought was a dream.

We judged our American president based on his character and not the color of his skin.

I would like to say that is not a significant thing, but yesterday, as Bob and I walked around the Martin Luther King Jr Center, and we took a moment at the final resting place of Mr. and Mrs. King, it really dawned on me that this IS significant. It's real and it is ok to celebrate this. We should celebrate this.

Martin Luther King Junior gave his life in the hopes that this dream would be realized, and 45 years later, it happened. There is still much to be done, But if you can, take a moment and give thanks for those that went before all of us...

:peace: and
Raine

Morning, comrades!

Being raised by musicians has some advantages.

I learned at a very early age that it really makes no difference what a person looks like. To a man, any serious musician will only ask one question when a new guy walks onto the bandstand.

"Can he play?"

That's all. Not "Is he Black, Gay, Muslim..."

"Can he play?"

Dr. King is surely proud today...for we did indeed judge someone on the content of his character. Perhaps we judged both candidates this way, maybe for the first time ever.

I'm glad we made the right choice.

Beautiful morning! Still feel like I'm living in a dream world!! Ahhhhh.

Just heard on ABC - Good Morning America. Diane Sawyer queries:

"What does a President-elect do after the acceptance speech?"

Answer according to ABC:

Family goes to Michelle's brother's house, entire family has pie. Then goes to bed.

Kerry headed for Obama cabinet?

US Senator John F. Kerry's widely reported place on Barack Obama's short list for secretary of state raises the possibility of dramatic changes in the Massachusetts political landscape, just days after Kerry won easy election to a fifth term.

Kerry's leap to a federal Cabinet post would spur what strategists and even potential candidates are already describing as a mad scramble among a dozen or more Massachusetts political figures over a tantalizing opportunity, a rare open seat in Washington's most exclusive club.

"These Senate seats come up once in a lifetime," said Dan Payne, a Democratic media consultant who has worked for Kerry's campaigns. "Anybody who has ever thought they wanted to be a senator will assemble the kitchen cabinet and take a good, careful look at it."

[Which goes back to something I said in 2004 about our Senator. President? No way. But wouldn't he make an awesome Secretary of State? (So would Bill Richardson, which is the guy I really want there now.) - TriSec]

Meanwhile, Gov. Patrick wants to stay in the State House.

A beaming Governor Deval Patrick met with reporters today after his return from Chicago and reiterated that he has no interest in a post in President-elect Barack Obama's administration.

After speaking about being "enormously moved and excited and proud" of Obama's electoral landslide, Patrick said definitively that he did not want to return to the White House.

"Are you asking me if I am going to Washington again?" Patrick asked, rephrasing a reporter's question. "No I am not. We have an ambitious agenda and a lot of work to do here. Frankly if the people will have me, I'd be interested in a second term."

Patrick did say, however, that he expected the ranks of his own administration to thin because of Obama appointments.

Since the security briefings are SOP for any new president, I don't think the Bushies could prevent that if they wanted to. However, I don't think they'll be giving him any info that could be used against the BushCheney - he'll have to find that stuff himself after he gets into office.

What I find most stunning is the referral that there was indeed 2 campaigns. The Palin and the McCain. I also enjoy the fact that she actually is trying to Blame John McCain for the prank phone call.

Has Sarah Palin ever left a position without completly burning her bridges?

Oh, talk of Prop 8 reminds me...

Young Javi is attending First Communion classes, so I'm trying to "plant" a question for his teachers.

"Javi, tell your teacher that one of your Godparents is gay."

"What's the gay?" (yes, he really said that!)

"Well, you like girs, right?"

"No."

"That's you, then."

Anyway, Mrs. TriSec and I went on to describe it better, capping off with "Sometimes two men like each other and end up getting married."

"Well, that's dumb."

"What do you think about if a man and a women got married?"

"I don't think that's a good idea, either."

So.....not sure what kind of child I've got here.

Good morning, bloggers!!

Excellent blog entry, Raine!! We have seen in the election of Barack Obama a significant milestone towards Dr. King's dream of judging others not on the color of their skin, but on the quality of their ideas and the content of their character. The monster of racism has not been staked through the heart yet, but it is cowering before the rising sun and those who wish to bring a long nightmare to an end.

The Daily Headlines are up over at UNN. We had several good blog entries in the Blogosphere section on the election, and I decided today's entry is one to put in the headlines, have others look at, and send with the rest of the headlines to a few good progressive hosts.

Oh puh-lease!

The other day, I was contacted by 72-year old man who pleaded with me to share his story with the media and politicians. He and his wife lost all of their savings in the stock market recently. They worked all their lives for this country and now they have nothing. Why? Because of corruption in Washington. That man asked me, “What do I do now Joe?”

So, here’s my promise to Robert and the other Joes and Janes out there who have been failed by their politicians. I have formed this organization to bring together individuals who want to help others, while at the same time ensuring our government keeps answering our tough questions.

With your help, we can stop the government and banks from taking peoples' homes away. We can stop our elected officials from selling our children into debt with our enemies. We can help each other far better and faster than the government has ever been able to.

Please join me in taking back our country from the elites in Washington by selecting a registration option to the right.

You all realize that comedians are all going to suffer under Obama's administration.

He's articulate, well-educated, unflappable, doesn't cheat on his wife, has a beautiful wife with nothing shady in her background, two adorable children....

This will be a four-year (hopefully eight-year!) nightmare for political comedy.

Joe Lieberman.

Is it wrong of me to wish that the Democrats would give up the extra seat just so they can kick him off every committee and strip any chairmanships he might have?

I would think that even the GOP is breathing a sigh of relief. With the Bush power machine gone, it will be OK to disagree with the party and cross the aisle to do things for the good of the country, instead of worrying about the repercussions should they fall out of step with the White House...

Alaska keeps changing its law on how to replace a Senator -- .... At the moment there are two versions: one would let Governor Palin name an interim replacement, the other wouldn’t. The courts haven’t got around to sorting out the conflict yet.

If Palin were to choose a replacement, she could choose herself. Or she could choose someone else, and then run in the special election that must be held within three months. She could resign as governor, run for the Senate and be back in Washington by spring.

Interesting...

Massachusetts has a similar quandary right now. When Sen. Kerry was almost president, the legislature changed the law to require a special election. (Romney was governor at the time.) Now that we have a Democrat in the State House, there's talk of reverting the law back to a Gubernatorial appointment....

Senator Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut independent, said he met with Majority Leader Harry Reid about his status in the Democratic-majority Senate after campaigning for Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

Lieberman didn't reveal whether Democrats would strip him of his chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

``I'm thinking about what my options are,'' Lieberman said.

In the current two-year session of Congress, Lieberman, 66, is the margin of difference in the Democrats' 51-49 control of the Senate, and he caucuses with Democrats. The party expanded its majority by at least six seats in the November elections.
From Bloomberg.

I'm curious why Huffington Post isn't covering this on their front page. Instead, they're claiming Olbermann dissed Campbell Brown. FTR - he never mentioned her name, only that "another host" forgot something dead easy.

Why HuffPo is covering this non-story instead of the denial of civil rights to a minority is inexcusable.

FireDogLake is collecting signatures for a petition to them asking them not to do it. You can sign it here.
