Not feeling Magnanimous, Nope, not yet.
Author: Raine    Date: 11/10/2008 13:32:30

Monday. A week ago we were all nervous and happy and concerned. About every emotion one could feel was probably pulsing through our veins. Tuesday night, it happened. A great weight was removed from the collective shoulders of most of America. It felt jubilant wonderful and thrilling.

.. at least in most of the United States of America. States like Arizona, Arkansas, California and Florida joined in the backwards advance of states like Mississippi to strip away rights from our GLBT brothers and sisters. We must work to regain the rights that are slowly being taken away from our citizens. We still have work to do.

*ush is still pResident, and still is doing all he can to undermine this Country. Imagine drilling for oil in Arches National Park. He will try to undermine as much as he can before he leaves office. A lame duck he is not, he is a wounded animal that will lash out trying to survive. While President Elect Barack Obama can and will take care of as much of this damage as he can-- we're going to have to keep writing letters and making phone calls to our elected officials telling them what we think and feel. We still have work to do.

Rush and Hannity and their ilk still have radio and TV shows. They still control a majority of the airwaves. The hate that they spew is not going away. Most of these people rose to media power under a Democratic president, lest we forget. We still have people like Bachman and Boehner in office. They will not go quietly into the night. Faux News and the propaganda machine are still with us, alive and well. Until they become irrelevant, we still have work to do.

On Tuesday we elected Barack Obama to be the 44th President of the United States of America, and the world celebrated with us. Sorry to bust the bubble, but that was just a small tiny step in making the change happen for our country. It was the beginning. We needed that to happen in order to save America from fascism, but we still have work to do.

It would be easy to forgive and forget. I would like to simply forgive, but right now I can't. Not when People on the right are still thinking that what they have done is right and just. I don't expect them to ever apologize for calling me unpatriotic, because that is just not the way it is. We are Liberals, and our job is to just keep going forward trying to make things just for our fellow humans. Tuesday was a good respite. It was nice to finally be able to breath again. It was something we have worked very hard to achieve, but it was just the beginning of the end not happening. We are liberals. It is easy for us to forgive. It's easy to say it's alright, let's just work from here on in and make this better... But I am just not ready to forgive and forget yet. There is no time to sit back and relax, because those that have done this to our country have not stopped doing what they do. And they won't. While our President Elect should be bipartisan for the sake of our country, I can not. I will not.

I cannot forgive and simply forget while the people who did this still have power, whether it be in office or on the airwaves, and feel no remorse. I am just not that magnanimous a person. After over 8 years, 12 even, of the partisan attacks from that party over there -- (you see I have not forgotten the Clinton years) I have learned to never sit back and trust these people. Newt Gingrich is still around, as are many others... like say Karl Rove. I can't just let all that go, not now not yet, maybe never. I use that to keep me going to make change. You see, this is going to take all of us, Some people will become more moderate in the coming weeks and months, and that is fine. I understand, but if I still sound radical, it is because, I don't ever want to look down from the edge of a cliff knowing that at any moment with the wrong breeze, our country would fall, and never return. We still have work to do.

Our President Elect and our new congress can only do so much to enact the change we need. The battles won't be SO uphill as they have been the past 12 years, but battles still must be waged. We are ALL in this now, responsible for turning the U.S.A. back around. You see, they say 'watch out what you ask for, you might get it' ... well we got it. Awesome and huge responsibility.

We still have work to do.

:peace: and
Raine

Morning all! :coffee2:

Excellent opening today Raine.. it's been easy to forget for the past week that these idiots are still out there doing everything they can to milk this country dry, both of reasoned thought and of its financial stability. We know we've got a lot of work to do going forward to bring things back, but knowing that we have a president, a Congress, and millions of our fellow Americans (and, it seems, citizens of other countries as well) motivated to make the needed changes and advances to bring this country back to the greatness it once knew.

Comment by TriSec on 11/10/2008 13:52:54
Raine, I am reminded of something Prime Minister Winston Churchill said not long after the British victory at El Alamein (November, 1942)

"We have a new experience. We have victory - a remarkable and definite victory."

And moments later, in the same speech:

"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

All we did Tuesday was pull the emergency brake. We can't start the train again until the track ahead is fixed.

BTW does anyone else here actually watch CNN's Late Edition? They had this fantastic segment on how the election of Obama could positively affect the black community in the country. I'll see if I can find a Youtbue clip of it..

Yay Raine-O,

I love that you are pointing out in a much more palatable fashion than screechy Chris Lavort going on about the obnoxious Prop 8 being passed - he is not the only one who is angry about that, some of us don't have the luxury of living in WeHo, or the Village (NYC) or Massachusetts, but that doesn't mean we care about our rights to love and live as we choose any less than those who live in larger media markets. Right on Sistah! I love you (and I mean that in whatever way you choose to interpret it :P)

Cheers,

I'll take the wrong job right now, thank you. A friend of mine, who is a "professional," thinks that if I just send out three resumes and "really go after" those jobs, I'll get one of them. She's also suggested that I try to target specific companies that I'm interested in and that they'll create a job for me if I present myself that way.

No one "creates" a job for an administrative assistant.

How old is your mattress?

I was having trouble sleeping and was also feeling old and tired for a while earlier in the fall...until I took the bed apart and discovered the central support had collapsed. I got the thing fixed and it's like having a new mattress again, that ol' restful sleep is back on most nights.

I know you've got a weird schedule and other issues, but maybe a little thing like that might help a bit...

I have just discovered that I have a relative buried in Arlington National Cemetery (WWII service in the Philippines), so we might have a field trip come January!

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has obtained evidence suggesting that documents which have been described as technical studies for a secret Iranian nuclear weapons-related research program may have been fabricated.

The documents in question were acquired by U.S. intelligence in 2004 from a still unknown source -- most of them in the form of electronic files allegedly stolen from a laptop computer belonging to an Iranian researcher. The US has based much of its push for sanctions against Iran on these documents.

The new evidence of possible fraud has increased pressure within the IAEA secretariat to distance the agency from the laptop documents, according to a Vienna-based diplomatic source close to the IAEA, who spoke to RAW STORY on condition of anonymity.

The laptop documents include what the IAEA has described in a published report as technical drawings of efforts to redesign the nosecone of the Iranian Shahab-3 ballistic missile “to accommodate a nuclear warhead.” The documents are also said to include studies on the use of a high explosive detonation system, drawings of a shaft apparently to be used for nuclear tests, and studies on a bench-scale uranium conversion facility.

These technical papers, along with some correspondence related to the alleged secret Iranian program -- referred to by the IAEA as “alleged studies” -- have been the primary basis during 2008 for the insistence by the US-led international coalition pushing for sanctions against Iran that the Iranian case must be kept going in the United Nations Security Council.

Comment by Raine on 11/10/2008 19:09:09
This is what I have heard... there are going to be 250,000 free tickets. Many are going to the Obama election tean or something like that. Also, many are going to congressional representatives -- of those you can contact your rep and request tickets. We sent a letter to our rep John Lewis, I doubt we will get them, but it is worth a shot.

Those that do not get tickets can go to the National Mall where there will be jumbo screens to watch. The parade route is open to the public as well (for free, no tickets needed)

ANYONE who buys a ticket is buying a counterfeit ticket. Tickets are FREE, it's just that there are a limitied number to get inot the actuall area where the inaugeration will be.

All seems well and good on the surface, an experimental radio service that can serve the most rural parts of Alaska. What the dunderhead that let this thing go through didn't realize (quite easily determined by looking at an F*ckingCC allocation chart) is that the Amateur Radio Service has used some of the frequencies proposed for DECADES, as it allows worldwide communications with very little power (100 watts), and is PARTICULARLY useful for Amateurs in Alaska, the firing up of one 100,000 watt experimental transmitter would make one amateur band completely worthless worldwide.

Fortunately they saw the error of their ways. No, it was not April 1st.

I was listening to a thing about the fuck on NPR, there is some contention about about saying "fuck" is obscene or not. Apparently, if you say I'm gonna fuck you bow-legged baby, that is obscene, but if you say "fuck all ya y'all!" that isn't since it isn't in the original meaning of the word. Which just proves to my why fuck is the fuckin' greatest word!

If your goal is to not draw attention to yourself that is not the strategy.

I have two newbie leaders upset over money and the lack of parental involvement. So we spent a tiresome hour arguing back and forth over these neverending issues.

After the season we had last year, I was hoping for a better season this year. It's not shaping up that way.

TriSec has to do some outreach and try to smooth some ruffled feathers....your Cubmaster's work is never done.

Earlier today I pretty much blew off everyone on the blog by stating:

Sorry - I forgot that the unemployed are a lower class.

I'll come back when I'm not in a position to depress anyone.

Then I left the blog. Later I was a bit sorry and wondered if I'd been hasty so I stopped back and found that, other than a few people seeming rather puzzled, nothing much was made of my statement and departure. No one had bothered reading my previous comments to see if anything was wrong.

So I suppose some explanation is necessary.

After Mala noted that I was becoming something of a regular in calling Stephanie I replied:

Frankly, I'd rather that I didn't have the time to be a regular.

One year unemployed and counting.

:-(

The one and only response to something, which was, for me, a very upsetting admission, was Mala simply (in paraphrase) telling me to buck up because she was sure I'd get a job.

I replied in earnest about how distressed I've become on my unemployed status including that a very good friend of mine is totally clueless about how hard this has all been on me. What I wrote in that comment wasn't easy for me to put into words.

Not a soul on the blog so much as acknowledged my distress. Instead, there was an influx of links and a rather distressed Trisec begging for help in rescuing some planes.

I'm learning firsthand about the plight of the chronically unemployed and to say it is depressing is an understatement. This isn't a chemical imbalance that a few pills will take care of - it's situational and needs emotional support.

As I stated earlier, one very good friend sincerely believes:

that if I just send out three resumes and "really go after" those jobs, I'll get one of them
despite telling her that between July and now, I've applied for nearly 250 jobs and had about ten interviews for my efforts - that's less than a 5% return rate I believe.

Being chronically unemployed isn't fun because you get to sit around the house all day if you want. It doesn't just suck. It's demoralizing and after a while it becomes self-fulfilling. I was confident when I first started interviewing. Now I'm becoming desperate and I don't know if it's reflecting in the interview process. Jobs that I'm absolutely qualified for go to other people and I have no idea why. Why them and not me?

I have to contact an energy assistance program this week because I'm not sure if I'll be able to afford the cost of my heating bills in a drafty apartment this winter. Again, demoralizing.

I make too much to qualify for food stamps. Also demoralizing.

I have medical bills that should have been covered by the half-assed insurance I paid for but they're refusing to pay on the grounds of pre-existing food-poisoning. So I'm getting calls from bill collectors because of that.

Pretty demoralizing too.

And, of course, I have no family support system. The only person in my family who asks if I need help is my Mom, also the only person who really can't help me and forgets that I'm unemployed within two minutes of me reminding her.

Oh, and being depressed about it is pretty lousy too because there's no simple way to keep your chin up when another best friend reminds you that standard job searches are now taking at least three years.

How's that for a pepper-upper?

And when I suggested to someone at my church that a support or networking group for other unemployed members might be a good idea I was dusted off.

So I brought up in the blog that I've passed my one-year anniversary of being out of work and it pretty much hit with a thud and was lost in all the excitement of some planes and some cool links and whatever else was more interesting.
