No Seat for you! (not you, actually - It's Him, that one. Over there)
Author: Raine    Date: 01/05/2009 13:30:14

Can you help me figure out this conundrum? Harry Reid has said that he will not seat Roland Burris as the next Democratic Senator from the state of Illinois because of the taint all around Blago. Harry has expressed the need to make a stand on this issue and has stated that he can use the US Senate to block this from happening. I have a little problem with that and I will get to it in a moment...

Did you know that Minnesota has an open senate seat? A REALLY wide open seat. (not a Larry Craig open seat -gutter!! people -- out of it!!) As of Saturday, Norm Coleman was no longer a sitting senator.
When the 111th Congress convenes on Tuesday, Norm Coleman may be out of an office, even though his Senate race remains far from settled.

Coleman’s first term officially expires at noon on Saturday, and he is locked in one of the closest Senate races in history, with Democrat Al Franken clinging to a 49-vote lead out of nearly 3 million votes cast.

Since he has not been certified a winner in the race, Coleman may have to give up his privileges as a senator, including his desk on the floor, his personal office and his right to vote on legislation, according to Democratic aides familiar with the rules.
We learned over the weekend that Al Franken won the popular vote in his state by a number closer to 200 votes. It now must go the the Secretary of State to be verified, and then to the state senate. In the mean time, Norm will be fighting it all the way.

That brings me back to Harry Reid. What will Harry do? On Tuesday, the 111th Congress convenes. 2 quick questions come to mind:
1) Will he allow Norm to take a seat in his office?
2) Will he block Roland from entering the Senate building?

I have been watching the drama unfold over the past few days and Harry has taken a bold and STRONG stance as the Senate leader. A bold stance to block a DEMOCRATIC senate selection. He has taken a NOT so bold stance to tell a GOP senator that he no longer has a seat. While I understand the desire to have the corruption taint not exist, why is Harry fighting harder to have Roland Burris NOT show up than he is to make sure that Norm knows he lost?

Tuesday will tell what happens. It seems to me that if Harry is gonna fight, it would be about keeping a non seated senator out of the senate building.

Reid keeps invoking Article 1.5 as a reason to block Burris. Why didn't he invoke Article 1.5 when Ted Steven was convicted?
Section 5. Each House shall be the judge of the elections, returns and qualifications of its own members, and a majority of each shall constitute a quorum to do business; but a smaller number may adjourn from day to day, and may be authorized to compel the attendance of absent members, in such manner, and under such penalties as each House may provide.

Each House may determine the rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behavior, and, with the concurrence of two thirds, expel a member.

Each House shall keep a journal of its proceedings, and from time to time publish the same, excepting such parts as may in their judgment require secrecy; and the yeas and nays of the members of either House on any question shall, at the desire of one fifth of those present, be entered on the journal.

Neither House, during the session of Congress, shall, without the consent of the other, adjourn for more than three days, nor to any other place than that in which the two Houses shall be sitting.
It seems to me that in order for this provision to be invoked, a senator needs to be seated AND commit disorderly behavior to be expelled. I am looking for a clause in the constitution that says it gives ANY member of the senate the ability to prevent an appointment. Harry never invoked this clause with Ted Stevens. As a matter of fact, the convicted felon got a standing ovation from GOP members.

This is not an endorsement of Roland Burris. I am just questioning Harry Reid's priorities. His leadership is looking like he is fighting small battles and not understanding the war. That is not real leadership, that is bad management.

We need to get our Democratic Senators seated now... it might not be the people Harry wants, but if we as Dems are going to respect the rule of law, we need to let Roland Burris be seated regardless of who appointed him. Harry needs to respect the rule, as ugly as it might seem.

Harry should spend more time making sure senators who are NOT sitting in elected office don't show up on Tuesday expecting a seat.

Let Burris stay. He was appointed legally, if not morally -- and the people of Illinois can make the choice in the next election whether they want him to remain senator. In the meantime, we have another Dem seat that we very much need. Harry Reid doesn't get to appoint the next senator from the state of Illinois. He is overstepping his authority and ignoring the one he has right now by not preventing Norm Coleman from returning to the Senate. He lost. He has no seat and he was not declared the winner.

Am I missing something here?

:peace: and
Raine

(On second thought, maybe Harry could let Coleman have a broom closet over next to storage Room B. )

I must be ahead of something, as I wrote most of it last night, hoping that the story would change when I got up this morning.

Sadly, nothing changed. Once again, Harry fights the very side of the aisle he should be fighting for.

Good morning, bloggers!! Excellent post, Raine!! I have little faith in Reid, who if he was more laid back in fighting for the Democratic Party, he would be comatose.

The new local affiliate 1190 AM is playing well, but the second hour of Bill Press was replaced by a Randi re-run. I hope that things will improve during the day.

Israel rains fire on Gaza with phosphorus shells

Israel is believed to be using controversial white phosphorus shells to screen its assault on the heavily populated Gaza Strip yesterday. The weapon, used by British and US forces in Iraq, can cause horrific burns but is not illegal if used as a smokescreen.

Not to be harsh, but it might be that he doesn't want a relationship if he chooses not to share his personal life. He's being polite, but not getting too personal.

Once a year, we make a foray into the cartoonish world of "As seen on TV". It's at the Topsfield Fair in the so-called "professional building".

Seeing it on TV is one thing, but being in a room full of these guys as they make their presentations is quite a show. Plus you actually get to handle the merchandise before buying. Some of it actually works, but most of it is incredibly cheap.

We usually do buy a trinket or two, just to make the day complete. (And they always have "Just for the Fair!" special deals, too...)

Anyway, I digress.

Have I mentioned how much I dislike the work "progressive" as opposed to "liberal?"

Let explain why.

Progressivism started as the middle class reaction to the perceived bad behavior of the rich in the Gilded Age. Some of the ideas the progressives has were good, settlement houses, conservation of land and resources, anti-trust. With that said there were some really bad ideas that were part of the progressive movement as well like, temperance and its close cousin prohibition, and Jim Crow.

There is a wiff of anti-emigrant nativism that comes of prohibitions against alcohol, primarily against Germans in the upper mid-west because of the cultural tradition of going to the beer garden on Sunday after church. Drinking on Sunday? How awful! Those bad foreigners besmirching America's cultural purity! All I have to say about Prohibition is this, we know that worked out.

On the race issue the progressive thought that race mixing was a bad thing. It might lead to the mongrelization of the White race. Yeah there is that eugenics thing there too. So best keep those black folks in their place, so thought southern progressives. We know how well that worked out too.

My other and possibly more important object to the word than two of progessivism two greatest failures is the way it was adopted by liberals as cover when "liberal" was made into a slur by the far right reactionaries who have take over the Republican party over the past thirty or so years. We need to take "liberal" back from them. American liberalism helped win WWI, it won WWII, it brought about the Marshall plan, it pulled the US out of the Great Depression (BTW check out David Sirota's crushing of the new conservative meme), it got civil rights legislation passed despite the resistance of the Southern Democrats. I could go on, but you get the point. So take it back. To put spin on a certain work in the "urban" vernacular: Franklin Roosevelt, OL (Original Liberal)!

Here is an interesting editorial that I found at Ha'aretz, a leading Israel liberal daily. Fortunately, there are some calmer minds in any country or region. Sadly, they are out of power in many places.

Lull now

By Haaretz Editorial

Tags: israel, hamas, Gaza

French President Nicolas Sarkozy's visit to Jerusalem today provides Israel with an exit ramp from the fighting against Hamas in Gaza. Sarkozy proposes declaring a lull in combat, which would test whether Hamas would agree to halt firing rockets. Israel would do well to respond affirmatively to the proposal, which protects its right to respond with force in the event the Palestinians continue firing from the Gaza Strip.

The lull would also be a good opportunity to halt the ground operation and pull back the Israel Defense Forces to Israel proper. In its decision to deploy ground troops in the operation, Israel showed that it is not deterred from assuming risks to defend its citizens, and it proved that its army is not afraid of engaging "armed" Palestinians in combat. But it is difficult to understand the purpose of prolonging the ground operation, which is liable to end in a difficult entanglement and casualties.

My hope is that there will be an effort to end the current conflict - but it will take courage, insight, and humility from all sides in the conflict to build a lasting peace.

Thanks for posting this Will. I especially appreciated this part:
It is vital to preserve these goals and not get dragged into a futile pursuit of Hamas in an effort to topple its regime. Experience teaches that expanding the set of objectives complicates achieving them, turning a lightning-quick operation into a long war of attrition. The government and IDF succeeded in mustering domestic and international legitimacy to an extensive military operation against the rocket fire, and it would be a pity to risk that legitimacy if the fighting drags on "until Hamas waves a white flag."

This is a situation that is very out of hand. It's hard for me to grasp the entire situation, and I would never say that A country should not defend itself, but what I am seeing is really just devastating.

I hope that people can understand it when I say that I suddenly understand how so many people around the world hated our administration more than our country. I am not pleased with Israel right now. That is not a defense of Hamas, I just have to wonder if this could have been prevented.

It's really crappy, cause it'll get the kids who play NFL two thosand whatever into joining and eventually dying. But then again...the think NFL two thosand whatever are real games, and their 300-400 dollar system is worth it to buy a new NFL game every year.

Raine, I think that perhaps the Israeli government could have done its part to avoid this by trying to put more supplies into Gaza and have them distributed by relief agencies. They also would have been best not to target Hamas leadership. Hamas has seen some success politically in its charitable work. (This is despite the fact that the Charter of Hamas calls for the destruction of Israel and has such puzzling and disturbing phrases as this.

Moreover, if the links have been distant from each other and if obstacles, placed by those who are the lackeys of Zionism in the way of the fighters obstructed the continuation of the struggle, the Islamic Resistance Movement aspires to the realisation of Allah's promise, no matter how long that should take. The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him salvation, has said:

"The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. Only the Gharkad tree, (evidently a certain kind of tree) would not do that because it is one of the trees of the Jews." (related by al-Bukhari and Moslem).

At the same time, Hamas has its own role in the conflict and blame - firing rockets at random is wrong and Israel does have a right to a response. Families in Gaza and Sderot both deserve to live in peace. I just think that there could have been better options. One of the great tragedies of this situation is that I do not see the Israeli or Palestinian peoples being well-served by so-called leaders.

I support peace, a two-state solution and the state of Israel - but I reserve the right to criticize any and all parties. So, I think that there has to be better solutions but I realize it is perhaps perilously easy to say this sitting behind a computer thousands of miles away from the region.
