It seems that everyone is talking about the successful rescue of ship captain Richard Phillips by the Navy Seals. To be sure, it's a great story. While the world waited and right-wing pundits loudly criticized President Obama for "doing nothing", he was quietly working behind the scenes with the Navy to ensure they had everything they needed to rescue the captain. At the critical moment they acted, and acted perfectly. Besides rescuing the captain, they removed three of the pirates from the living, and snagged one to take back. It's the stuff Hollywood movies are made of (and we can all pretty much guarantee this story will become one).

You have to wonder if this will change the image of pirates in movies. Will Pirates of the Caribbean 4 even be made? If so, will Jack Sparrow still be painted in such a positive light? Will the Disney ride of the same name be changed so that Navy Seals come to the rescue? Will Talk Like a Pirate Day be canceled?

One thing is for certain - the Somalian pirates will not curtail their activities. On the contrary, they've vowed to continue, and seized four ships since the weekend:
Somali pirates were back to business as usual Tuesday, defiantly seizing four more ships with 60 hostages after U.S. sharpshooters rescued an American freighter captain. "No one can deter us," one bandit boasted. The freed skipper, Richard Phillips, will return home to the United States on Wednesday, after reuniting with his 19-man crew in the Kenyan port of Mombasa, according to the shipping company Maersk Line Ltd.

The brigands grabbed more ships and hostages to show they would not be intimidated by President Barack Obama's pledge to confront the high-seas bandits, according to a pirate based in the Somali coastal town of Harardhere.

"Our latest hijackings are meant to show that no one can deter us from protecting our waters from the enemy because we believe in dying for our land," Omar Dahir Idle told The Associated Press by telephone. "Our guns do not fire water. I am sure we will avenge."

On Monday, Obama vowed to "halt the rise of piracy" without saying exactly how the U.S. and allies would do it.

Undeterred, the pirates tried - but failed - to hijack a U.S. aid ship yesterday:
Somali pirates fired grenades and automatic weapons at an American freighter loaded with food aid but the ship managed to escape the attack and was heading Wednesday to Kenya under U.S. Navy escort, officials said.

The French are not backing down either. They rescued a yacht seized by pirates on Saturday:
At least one hostage and two pirates have been killed after French naval forces stormed a yacht seized by pirates off the coast of Somalia, officials say.

Three other suspected pirates were detained in the military operation on Friday, aimed at freeing five hostages on the Tanit, a statement from the office of Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, said.

"Today, threats were more precise, with the pirates refusing proposals and the Tanit moving toward the coast. An operation to free the hostages was decided," the statement said.
[...]
France has taken a lead role in attempting to bring the piracy, which has been rampant in the busy shipping lanes of the coast of east Africa, under control.

French forces have detained at least 60 suspected pirates since April 2008, taking several of them back to France to face possible trial.

"France will never give into pirates' blackmail or to terrorism," Morin said.

So what should the next step be?... a multi-national search and destroy mission?... a military operation to raid and/or bomb their home bases?... Trained monkeys?

How about trained dolphins? They're already helping out, if you believe this story:
Thousands of dolphins blocked the suspected Somali pirate ships when they were trying to attack Chinese merchant ships passing the Gulf of Aden, the China Radio International reported on Monday.

The Chinese merchant ships escorted by a China's fleet sailed on the Gulf of Aden when they met some suspected pirate ships. Thousands of dolphins suddenly leaped out of water between pirates and merchants when the pirate ships headed for the China's.

The suspected pirates ships stopped and then turned away. The pirates could only lament their littleness befor [sic] the vast number of dolphins. The spectacular scene continued for a while.

Yes, there's a picture at the link (which seems to be taken from the point of view of the pirate ship. Hmmm....).

Perhaps we should start asking for dolphins with frikkin' laser beams on their heads...

Pirates... they've always been shown in a "bad guys with a heart of gold" kind of light. Its silly. I remember when I took Aunt Azalea to Disney Land some years ago, I hadn't returned since I was a child and I said we should begin the tour with a ride of the silly "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride. I was shocked when I looked at the ride with adult eyes! Stuffed mechanical pirates with women thrown over there shoulders. With the women struggling to get away! Pirates standing over men on the ground with swords drawn. Rape and pillage...... as a kid I didn't understand this. Or, maybe I did on some level.

Whatever. Pirates = bad.

And where do you put counterdemonstrators who have threatened to crash a party that includes live television? Police will attempt to contain them in an area one very long block away, in front of a parking lot on Courtland Avenue.

Organizers and stage hands are out in front of the state Capitol now. Checks are being written by the national anti-tax group Americans for Prosperity — but will be backfilled by local donations, said spokeswoman Virginia Galloway (no relation to the author).[...]

Steve, Steve, STEVE. Since you live in NoVA I am sure you are aware of this thing in the Washington Metro area called The Metro. It's a public transportation system you see, Steve. About the Atlanta Tea Bag Party:

Atlanta tea party trimmed back by an hour

7:12 pm April 15, 2009, by Jim Galloway

We’ve picked up word that the tea party in Atlanta — which started minutes ago — has been trimmed from a three-hour event down to two hours, which means it will end at 9 p.m.

That’s when Sean Hannity is set to go on air from the stage at the state Capitol for his Fox News program.

We’re being told that Fox originally wanted the active crowd in the background, but have now decided against it.

The environment is very, very tight, with stages dedicated to the TV set and entertainment right on top of Washington Street. Giant TV screens have been erected at Mitchell and Martin Luther King streets, to give the crowd a reason to gather on those avenues.

And it’s surprisingly cold and windy.

Hannity will still do the broadcast, but without the crowd behind him — or trying to compete with tea party speakers in the confined area.

Comment by Raine on 04/16/2009 01:00:31
In case y'alll missed it: Sean is gonna cover the Tea bag party AFTER the people are gone.

We’re being told that Fox originally wanted the active crowd in the background, but have now decided against it....

So - does this mean that FAUX News is organizing the protests rather than just reporting on them??
