Putting out a fire with gasoline. Author: RaineDate:04/16/2009 12:49:47
Yesterday was fascinating and frightening all at once. I will stand by my assertion that people have the right to protest, regardless of political affiliation and I will always support that right. That said, I will not support the right to yell fire in a theatre, and - to a large extent - that was exactly what was happening all over the country.
It was like watching Sarah Palin rallies all over again. It was the same racist rhetoric, fear-mongering of the new administration, calls for God, cries of civil liberties being trampled, high taxes -- you name it. It was a regular potpourri of anger. It was all there. While many were trying to tell us that this was all about the over-spending of Government, and that this was not about Republicans or Democrats -- it was about Obama. It was about people being genuinely unhappy about who they have as a president. I would have more respect for these protestors if they would just come out and say it instead of being fed lies by a corporate-owned media center (Fox News) and then regurgitating them.
There were signs crying against nazism, communism, socialism and fascism. It was fascism that struck me as odd. In particular, this clip:
This man works for a major corporation, he is employed by what is known in some circles as the mouth-piece for the GOP and he's crying fascism?
It got me to thinking about the bad old days while we on the left were watching our country fall into obscurity. We cried those words as well. So I pulled up the old 14 Points of Fascism, to see what has changed, and what has not. What I found was disturbing. It isn't that we are still heading towards fascism, it was that many of these people were actually out protesting FOR further fascism, without realizing it. In particular, and with a direct reference to the Fox News Business reporter in the video I posted above I found this:
6) A controlled mass media Under some of the regimes, the mass media were under strict direct control and could be relied upon never to stray from the party line. Other regimes exercised more subtle power to ensure media orthodoxy. Methods included the control of licensing and access to resources, economic pressure, appeals to patriotism, and implied threats. The leaders of the mass media were often politically compatible with the power elite. The result was usually success in keeping the general public unaware of the regimes’ excesses.
It struck me as disturbing that Fox was actually making itself the news. I found out later how true that was.
We’ve picked up word that the tea party in Atlanta — which started minutes ago — has been trimmed from a three-hour event down to two hours, which means it will end at 9 p.m.
That’s when Sean Hannity is set to go on air from the stage at the state Capitol for his Fox News program.
We’re being told that Fox originally wanted the active crowd in the background, but have now decided against it.
It's full-blown media propaganda and it is very dangerous. It's exactly how Rwanda found itself in a full-blown genocide.
I understand people are not happy in this country, but the reality is that we had our revolution in November. It was called the election process. What is happening now is a mass manipulation by a small group of people that lost that power in November. They have whipped a few vocal Americans into a frenzy without explaining to them what is really happening. They might not be in the majority now, in regards to elected office, but that doesn't mean they don't still have power. Don't believe me? Watch this guy speak truth at a Tea Bag Party in Pensacola Florida Yesterday. Watch what happens:
The man was booed when he told them taxes have been lowered. Protesting is a wonderful thing in this country; I have long advocated that in order to change, you must get the government to listen. The problem is when the anger is unfocused and rampant and is based upon lies. When a media outlet fuels that anger by BEING the news instead of reporting it the result is civil unrest. If the wind blows the right way, riots will follow. Nothing good can come of putting out fire with gasoline, and yet that is exactly what Fox News is doing.
3) Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
We need solutions, not scapegoats. The first step to stopping fascism is to know what it really is.
Now I have a few journalism classes under my belt, even wrote for the college paper at one point and thought about being a journalist a long while ago - no way, no how was I insturcted to do the things that person from Fox did. That was not journalism in any way, shape or form.
I know how much we love to use them for cannon fodder but really I'm thinking it might be time to start reporting them to the FCC

I saw what they did to the protesters first hand.
So do I.. that whole experience, and the fact that it was COMPLETELY IGNORED by the media, make this whole bullshit thing yesterday even more insulting.
These morons come out with their misdirected outrage and their lawn chairs and their self-righteous attitudes and their sponsorships by fascist right-wing organizations and they sit there and embarass themselves. Yet when the leaders of this country deceive them and send them to die for a lie and for their own profit, and they spy on them and steal their money and their children's future, they stay home and sneer and accept the falsehoods they've been handed because they're too fucking dumb or afraid to see and accept the truth.

I'd say no. Both fascism and Nazism are founded on similar ideas, but they are not identical.
Fascism is a political ideology.
Nazism, is based on blind racial hatred, militarism, and totalitarian power in the interest of a master race.

Good morning from the Valley of the Sun, bloggers!
Excellent post, Raine!! Good luck on the job interview, BobR! (I have a big job fair on Saturday, so I am already printing up resumes.)
I think that what we are seeing in the GOP is the party becoming more and more radicalized, with heated rhetoric. It is not acceptable to sling the terms fascist, communist, socialist, and traitor in describing opponents. I worry how some people will take these words as a call to action. Indeed, we saw one person who decided to target liberals kill two people last year at a Unitarian-Universalist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee. So, I must ask with William Butler Yeats, "What rough beast slouches towards Bethlehem, waiting to be born?"

Among the anticipated documents are detailed 2005 memos by Stephen G. Bradbury, who as acting head of the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel authorized the C.I.A. techniques. The documents have never before been made public, but an article in The New York Times in October 2007 said that the memos gave legal support for using a combination of coercive techniques at the same time and concluded that the C.I.A.’s methods were not “cruel, inhuman or degrading” under international law.
Another document expected to be released this afternoon is a Justice Department memo written August 1, 2002. The memo, written by John C. Yoo and signed by Jay S. Bybee, two Justice Department officials at the time, is a legal authorization for a laundry list of proposed C.I.A. interrogation techniques.

The Obama administration on Thursday informed CIA officials who used waterboarding and other harsh interrogation tactics on terror suspects that they will not be prosecuted, senior administration officials told The Associated Press.
Even before President Barack Obama took office in January, aides signaled his administration was not likely to bring criminal charges against CIA employees for their roles in the secret, coercive terrorist interrogation program. It had been deemed legal at the time through opinions issued by the Justice Department under the Bush administration.
But the statement being issued Thursday by Attorney General Eric Holder, the nation's chief law enforcement officer, is the first definitive assurance that those CIA officials are in the clear, as long as their actions were in line with the legal advice at the time.
This was a needed step to keep the good faith with the CIA.
Now, bring on the Memo's!
