Well, for one thing...

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

I don't have to tell you what these words are. That said, someone should tell the administration what they are and what it means.

The DoD, led by Hegseth, has decided to not recognize some religions/faiths.
Soldiers will still be able to list the dropped religions on their dog tags, according to the Pentagon

The Defense Department moved last month to cut roughly 180 religion codes from its previous list of about 220 recognized faiths.

The new list, expected to take effect in July, recognizes 31 religious categories, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Baha’i, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, and non-religion. Christian denominations make up the majority of the new recognized religion categories. The military notes that individuals can still list religions not among the named 31 on their dog tags.
Among those no longer recognized:
Messianic
Eckankar
Heathen
Native American
Church of the Spiral Tree
Troth
Rosicrucianism
Dian Wi (Dianic Wicca)
Sacred Well Congregation
Druid
Deism
Gard Wi (Gardnerian Wicca)
Shaman
Seax Wi (Seax Wicca)
Asatru
Pagan
Humanist
Eastern Religions, Other
Unitarian Universalist
Wicca
Magick And Spiritualist
Atheist

I don't pretend to be knowledgeable about religions. BlueSky has people with better knowledge than I.

Department of Defense religious codes…where to start?

-United Church of Christ listed as Church of Christ, which is historical & theological nonsense;

-Messianic Judaism is listed w/ Judaism, which is an insult to actual Jews

-Orthodox Judaism is listed as a branch of Orthodox Christianity … wow.

We are now at the point where the federal government decides what religions are recognized. Congress didn't pass a law. The Executive branch can't pass laws. They can decree, I guess. I don't think it's going to stop with the military, to be honest.

Hello, bloggers!!!

I hope that everyone is well today.

I am deeply disturbed by the actions of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Messianic Judaism is not Judaism -- despite my seeing some of their followers argue otherwise. Orthodox Judaism is not Orthodox Christianity. Christianity is the belief that Jesus died to save humanity from sin. One would think that someone with an Iron Cross on his chest could understand this. Indeed, I think that some of my recently graduated middle school students could have done a better job listing faiths into categories.

I do not want to see an approved list of religions. Historically, members of religious minorities faced discrimination and persecution. I do not want the bad old days to return.

A former U.S. Army chaplain who now serves as an endorser told Military.com the revised list is “horrible.”

“When I raised my hand to become an Army chaplain, I swore that I would support and defend the Constitution,” the individual, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told Military.com. “The First Amendment is the free exercise of religion for everybody. That's what I was buying into.”

The individual said that oath years ago was never rescinded, which makes the new list “an excuse for the failure to provide the free exercise of religion for all people.”

“That's a tragedy and travesty, absolutely,” they said. “As far as I'm concerned, that's a violation of the United States Constitution.”

I bet we'll find out eventually that this is AI slop.

That still is no excuse for any of it.

Last night they tested the UFC stage lighting at the White House. Check it out.

The People’s House is looking more like a Six Flags amusement park after dark. It’s embarrassing.

Unitarian?

Well, that's just another strike against Boston, isn't it? Unitarianism is a distinctly American religion, having origins at the Arlington Street Church, this city, under minister William Ellery Channing.

Many of our cherished 19th-century writers and poets, among them Emerson and Thoreau, were Unitarian, interwoven with Transcendentalism.

It's over. The Union is dead. We should just call it a day and fucking secede.

Well, that will be a prominent target for any incoming jetliners, won't it?

Yeah, I went there.

May I ask what those of us in blue areas of red states should do. At my age, I have to hold on to my job -- which is in a red state. (Northwest Indiana is considered to be Chicago by most of the rest of this state.)

We must speak up for a rights and be the change that we desire.

Nothing is going to change, Will. Get out while you still can.

My in-laws didn't care what happened when they fled Castro; the only thing was to get out before he came after them.
