Distractions
Author: Raine    Date: 05/21/2009 12:48:09

President Obama is expected to give a speech today, renewing his pledge to close Gitmo. Interestingly (and not coincidentally) the former VP - Dick Cheney - will be giving a speech today arguing that torture works. According to sources, Dick will tell people that not only does torture work, but that Americans deserve to see all the proof that it works. See? Dick wants all the documents released too!

According to reports Dick may delay his speech at the American Enterprise Institute until after the President speaks at the National Archives. Sadly, the media will cover Dick like a condom. I have seen it happen all too often. The media will try to change the conversation, change the focus. It all is part of the grand distraction. Instead of everyone talking about that big bad Nancy Pelosi and how she is the greatest national security threat ever, we will be talking about the man who made our country less safe through torture. Snap, the talking point changed again. It would be deliciously ironic if is wasn't as serious as a heart attack.

That said, expect our President to talk about the Declaration of Independence, our Constitution and the things that America has stood for (and will again). He will tell you and me that America lost it's way during the Bush/Cheney years. He will outline what he wants to happen. We must close Gitmo. That needs to be a focus regarding our national security. He signed an executive order 2 days into office. He wants it closed. We want it closed. I don't need to have any of these silly gimmicks the GOP plays to take that focus away. I don't need the media trying to make everyone forget that Gitmo is a giant torture chamber that NEEDS to be closed.

That is important to remember today. Obama is President now, Cheney is a war criminal. Obama will be talking to you and me, Dick Cheney will be talking to those that enabled war crimes. Our President will talk about the detainees. If it's possible, he wants to try them in Americans Courts; if that doesn't work, he will try them by military tribunals and - if nothing else is possible - he will seek to find other nations to take these people. Not ideal, but seriously, what are we to do with this mess that was left in the wake of the previous administration?

What we are seeing is the exactly what we had feared. We are seeing how bad things really were, and still are. At every turn, when this administration tries to make some headway, to shine a light on the problems and determine how to fix it, the reminders of the 8 year disaster show how deeply damaged our country is.

I tire of all of this, I really do. We shouldn't have to fight this hard to close Gitmo, we shouldn't have to deal with spineless Dems who have fallen for GOP talking points regarding bringing detainees to American federal prisons (military or otherwise), we shouldn't have to deal with sensationalistic media, and we certainly should not have to deal with Dick Cheney anymore.

All of these things are distractions, that -- had they been dealt with properly, would not have neccesitated the need for the President of the United States to speak today.

:peace: and
Raine

Morning all. Oh.... its so nice to have a speedy blog. Though, that being said, I will continue my search today for some RAM for my Mac G5 (non-Intell chip). My film editing has made me need to go to 8G.

Anywho, Cheney sucks. I wonder if some news (FOX) will even broadcast it? Meantime, our current Admin stopped a terrorist attack of the homegrown variety and they are sending a Gitmo detainee off to NYC for actual "Justice". Yay!

Comment by wickedpam on 05/21/2009 13:08:12
Morning

I whole heartedly agree, if we'd had an ethical man as President for the last 8 years we would not be in this state now.

And like I mentioned yesterday, its going to talk a lot more then 100 days to fix this mess.

Morning all

Allergy has me stuck at home again today. Another nosebleed when I woke up, worse than the first Sunday night, so I'm off to the doc this morning to see what's going on. Just have the fear that #3 will be worse and happen on the holiday.

Why does Dick the dick deserve any airtime, unless it's him answering to a judge/jury?

TJ, have you ever tried the Neti Pot for cleaning out the.., um... stuff? I HIGHLY recommend it, they work really well when used regularly (don't use table salt though, sea salt is better) and will change your allergy life!

Newt Gingrich on his conversion: ‘Part of me is inherently medieval. I resonate to Gothic churches’

The best part is one of the reader comments:
Rarely in history has a human been so vain that he cannot clearly see, and be shamed by, such gargantuan hypocrisy. He loved his wife, then left her for something new. He loved his church, but left it for something new. He promised smaller government in the Contract With America, yet the government GREW while he remained in office. The opening promise of the Contract was that laws that pertained to the public would also pertain to members of Congress. But while voting themselves raises, and growing the size of government, Gingrich and the hypocritcal right somehow forgot to increase the minimum wage. Gingrich is a joke to anyone who can actually READ and COMPREHEND.

One of the most amazing things here- in hearing back to back speeches--

You can really understand how MUCH things have really changed in our Nation since this administration has taken over.

I leaned on something and now I have a pain in my side. It hurts when I move or cough.

Geesh, my luck just keeps going downhill.

I'm on the far side of the Cambridge Reservoir. My office in on the side overlooking the Lincoln Woods. There's a few hundred acres of undeveloped land around here.

Comment by TriSec on 05/21/2009 19:01:50
Wha?

I'm listening to WCRB (99.5 FM) this afternoon. I was only half-listening, but I think I just heard a commercial for a dude.

It sounded like he was reading his resume, and he concluded with "If you need an electrical engineer, give me a call!!" with his info.

Are we that desperate now?

(and in a side note, I went out for my daily constitutional today, further exploring the office park I'm in. I'd guess the next park over is fully 1/3 empty; entire buildings are shuttered and dark.)

What is this "nice" of which you speak, Sir? I have dim memories of this thing called "The Sun," which if I remember correctly provides bright light and warmth. Since I have been living in a gray, overcast rain soaked pall for what seems like an eternity, I might be wrong about this "Sun" thing. Am I right?

Sounds like a New England spring. Only we get that weather in March and April, so in addition to a gray, overcast, rain-soaked pall....it's freakin' COLD!

Ahh a good day's work is now done, and now it's time to pillage iTunes for all the new music I downloaded while I was here.

Well gang, I'm heading up to the store in a bit. I'm starting a new job there Saturday, and we need to finish CPR and First Aid training. (gee, I am *so* worried about that.) Plus, I hope to get a couple more miles on the road in the bus tonight.

Oh it has been unseasonably chilly here as well.

Comment by livingonli on 05/21/2009 22:33:41
It's a nice day here for a change. At least I was able to get outside for a bit even if it was only to go to Target, the drug store, and get some pizza.

It's still going to take a lot (winning the lottery would be nice) to get me out of this funk.
