Scooby Doo and the Mystery of the Missing Governor

It stuck out like a sore thumb amongst the news of Iranian voter unrest, the train wreck in Washington and, most importantly, John and Kate getting a divorce. There were reports that Mark Sanford, the governor of South Carolina, was missing.
According to the news, Sanford had taken off from the governor's mansion Thursday unaccompanied in a black SUV and had apparently turned his cell phone off somewhere in the Atlanta area. A little odd, I'll admit. However, what struck me as really strange was the quote from his wife that she "wasn't worried."
Eventually, the Governor was reportedly "found" within hours of the news hitting the 'net, although there hasn't been any word from the governor himself. Even so, quite a few questions remain.
First, why-if you are planning to run for the Presidency- take off on a trip by yourself on Father's Day weekend? Not exactly a way to instill confidence in the base.
Second, there's the whole thing of his supposed destination. The Appalachian Trail is a great destination, and it offers some great hiking and camping sites. However, if I were living in Columbia, SC and looking to walk part of the trail for the weekend, I'd go to Asheville NC to walk that part. It's much more scenic, and it's better than having to fight Atlanta traffic to try to get there.
And by the way, why did he have to go out of state to go hiking? The state's own tourism board has many suggestions of places to go for a nice four-day getaway from it all, governor or not.
Finally, there is this. Apparently, Gov. Sanford wanted to get away from it all, but still found time to twitter "SC's government structure fundamentally flawed ". If you were trying to get some peace and quiet away from your family, on Father's Day, and wanted so badly to be secluded that you switched off your cell phone and PDA in Atlanta, why would you feel the need to Twitter twice during your lost weekend in the remote woods of Georgia?

Whatever the reason, it has many people talking about his responsibilities as governor and his presidential aspirations, and not in a good way. Perhaps the last word on this should go to the governor himself. On a June 9 appearance on the Glenn Beck program, as he was talking about his refusal to take stimulus money for his state, Gov. Very sad news this morning about Ed McMahon. I do have to say, though, that when they started to announce his passing on CNN this morning, I thought they were about to announce Walter Cronkite had died. Rest in peace, Mr. Sidekick.

I have a bone to pick.. on the new tobacco bill.
First off, the big new rule about flavorings applies only to cigarettes and components of cigarettes. Not flavored cigars or cigar wraps that are popular for rolling up some weed. Not flavored pipe tobacco that my grandpa used to always smoke. Not the mini-cigars like Capones that have cognac flavored wrappers. Hell they don't even apply the no-flavor rule to fuckin' chewing tobacco which is FAR more dangerous than cigs in the short run.
In other words, this bill does next to nothing to address the issue of flavored tobacco products other than eliminate most foreign competition ESPECIALLY Djarum, an Indonesian company. As far as I know, the ONLY US-made brand that has fruit or spice-flavored cigs that will be impacted by this is Camel (#9s & their turkish/arabic blends).
Also, I smoke cloves exclusively now. Not all the time - it's a kind of stop-n-go thing. I can't stand the taste of regular cigs and menthols are too buzzy. You don't usually find cloves at a gas station either - you have to go to a specialty store, package store or cigar/tobacco shop. They're already a couple bucks more per pack than other cigs because they're imported. And aside from the trendy younger crowd, the only people who regularly smoke them are connossieurs who like the taste, foreigners or naturalized citizens (particulary from Asia or the Middle East), or those with such foreign heritage. Why not just limit their sale to cigar shops, which are already kinda rare and usually a lot more serious about their clientelle?
This is a gift to Big Tobacco, nothing less. They don't give a shit if they can't market light cigs or those nasty neon-pink Camels anymore - they'll have more people to smoke Marlboro Reds and Newports.

I know it is the WSJ, and we don't know if these stories are true, but this is one story from Iran:
When Mr. Alipour didn't return home that night, his parents began to worry. All day, they had heard gunshots ringing in the distance. His father, Yousef, first called his fiancée and friends. No one had heard from him.
At the crack of dawn, his father began searching at police stations, then hospitals and then the morgue.
Upon learning of his son's death, the elder Mr. Alipour was told the family had to pay an equivalent of $3,000 as a "bullet fee"—a fee for the bullet used by security forces—before taking the body back, relatives said.
Mr. Alipour told officials that his entire possessions wouldn't amount to $3,000, arguing they should waive the fee because he is a veteran of the Iran-Iraq war. According to relatives, morgue officials finally agreed, but demanded that the family do no funeral or burial in Tehran. Kaveh Alipour's body was quietly transported to the city of Rasht, where there is family.

Considering how bad it could have been, 9 deaths is, while not okay, is better then I expected for an incident like this. The pictures look horrible though

I didn't think they were either until I started to look into them a bit closer. While driving to work, XM165 ran a promo for Glenn Beck's show promoting the former repeat airing at 3 PM that's been pulled for Randi's show which is really stupid since they were promoting during Randi's show the show that no longer airs at that time. Glenn Beck actually airs at 9 AM on 165. Dave Ramsey runs from Noon-3 and then it's Randi and some other rightie is on after her. When Momma's on in the morning this is the XM talk choices on at the same time;
