Stimulus 2.0 -- or how I learned to love the lie.
Author: Raine    Date: 07/09/2009 12:39:49

Yesterday, above or below the noise and the din of the Jackson Palin Media channels was another discussion that political wonks seems to be having. It was talk of a second stimulus. With questions being bandied about cable news, online media and the blogosphere like 'will we need a Stimulus 2.0?' and 'are we spending enough?' to the constant drumbeat of how 'the stimulus has been a failure', I was wondering where this idea of a Stimulus 2.0 came from. I have watched the President, I have paid fairly close attention to what is going on. I simply couldn't recall where the meme came from.

Poking around, asking a few questions, as I am known sometimes to do, it turns out that it came from -- you got it --- the media. The title of this article With a Caveat, Hoyer Says He's Open to Second Economic Stimulus sites the following from Steney Hoyer
"I think we need to be open to whether we need additional action. We need to continue to focus on bringing the economy back to a place where we're not losing jobs."

Hoyer made no specific proposals for a possible additional stimulus. Others have suggested extended unemployment compensation benefits and a payroll tax holiday.
In that very same article, Harry Reid stated that there were no plans for an additional stimulus. Then there was this last paragraph:
But on Tuesday, according to news reports, Laura Tyson, a member of the president's Economic Advisory Panel, said that while the current stimulus is of an appropriate size and includes "a significant amount of investment in long-term growth," another may be necessary to put the economy on the right track. Speaking at an economic forum in Singapore, Tyson said she was expressing her own views, not the administration's position.
Whew-- so glad we got that tiny piece of truth out of the way... or did we? Understandably, there has been talk that more work needs to be done. Hoyer and others have stated that additional actions could include extending unemployment benefits, releasing more of the stimulus money sooner, passing new tax cuts, payroll holidays, etc. Everyone is saying it is too early to be talking this idea. It seems as though the meme of a Stimulus 2.0 is still out there thriving.

The Republicans are going to have a talking point field day with something that is not true. During his June 23 press conference, the President stated the following:
Q: Thank you, Mr. President. If I can just return to the economy more generally. When you were selling the economic stimulus package, you talked and your advisors and economists talked about keeping unemployment below 8 percent. Last week you acknowledged that unemployment is likely to reach double digits, being 10 percent. Do you think you need a second stimulus package?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, not yet, because I think it's important to see how the economy evolves and how effective the first stimulus is. I think it's fair to say that -- keep in mind the stimulus package was the first thing we did, and we did it a couple of weeks after inauguration. At that point nobody understood what the depths of this recession were going to look like. If you recall, it was only significantly later that we suddenly get a report that the economy had tanked.

And so it's not surprising then that we missed the mark in terms of our estimates of where unemployment would go. I think it's pretty clear now that unemployment will end up going over 10 percent, if you just look at the pattern, because of the fact that even after employers and businesses start investing again and start hiring again, typically it takes a while for that employment number to catch up with economic recovery. And we're still not at actual recovery yet.

So I anticipate that this is going to be a difficult -- difficult year, a difficult period.
So about 8-10% of the package has been spent, the President, Harry Reid and others have not stated we need a second one, and still the meme continues. It's my understanding that the bulk of the original package was to be spent in 2010, as people thought things of this sort were supposed to get really bad. Both the President and Vice President said things are worse than we thought. Joe Biden stated on July 5th that is was premature to think of a new stimulus bill. I will let others pontificate on those issues. The ship is, in my opinion still turning around, This chart is a nice little visual. The media seems unable to report subtle things that might require nuance to tell a complete story.

Stimulus 2.0 is a media created story. It a classic example of political projection. It frustrates the heck out of me, because this is just the kind of thing that the GOP will grab onto like a rabid dog. You think the teabaggers aren't going to go nuts about this? There is no second stimulus right now. The only people pushing this idea are the media. I just googled Second Stimulus and there were tons of stories all starting out with the question: Is another Stimulus needed?

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it." For our corporatist media-- This seems to be a truth.

:peace: and
Raine

One more thing that is really pissing me off about this stimulus thing is that the Money that HAS gone to the states isn't being spent. How pray tell is that The Presidents fault?

This is going to be our job for the next 4 years - grabbing the talking points from the jibber jabberers, find the source and the truth, and then feed it back out into the atmosphere. I am way past sick of the pseudo-legitimate media using the FAUX News model of "some say" as a way to report out and out lies as if they were the truth.

From Massachusetts:

84.389 Title I Grants to Local Educational Agencies $165,204,537

This is part of my beef with the City of Waltham right now. The school budget was off by just $4m. Didn't we get any of the stimulus money to help close the gap? Not to mention the $15m in the city's "rainy day fund"?

Nay, the mayor came up with a complex scheme to bump up against the prop 2 1/2 cap and raise the property taxes without actually bringing it to an override vote, while at the same time laying off 130 teachers and gutting the school administration.

Fortunately, City Council overrode her and restored the budget. Which has touched off the anti-incumbent backlash in town right now. (Mayor and School Committee, primarily. Although every City Council seat is challenged this year, too.)

I wouldn't necessarily say it's a Christian thing - it was more a Roman or Egyptian practice, though the Jews did own slaves as well.. Of course, the Romans did eventually adopt Christianity. I just think it was more of an accepted practice at the time when the bulk of the Bible's events take place, and you have to take that into account when interpreting the stories and lessons it contains to today's world society where slavery is, for the most part, no longer practiced or acceptable.

Very true.

Slavery in the bible is far from the slavery of the founding of this country. Those enslaved then were often on the losing side of a war. By the time this country was founded, the slaves were just random people who were kidnapped.

If that makes sense at all...

Let's discuss 2 arguments that have been proposed against healthcare reforn:

1. A government health care system would be terrible; just look at [insert any industrialized country here]

2. If people were offered the option of public health insurance, no private insurance company would be able to compete.

If #1 were true, Why worry about the private insurance companies? It would seems to me that people against a reform would be happy...

Yes, he's juvenile and crude, but the genius of his comedy is showing how other people react in uncomfortable situations. Howard Stern used to do that with the Stuttering John bit, where his reporter would fake a stutter, the interviewee would soften up because he felt sorry for him, and then John would toss the zinger. In particular, I remember him asking Imelda Marcos "when you fart, do blame it on the family dog?". Watching her face transform from self-important pity to shock to outrage was a thing of beauty.

Of course - this works best on those that are full of themselves. I squirm a little when Cohen does his thing on unexpectant regular "nice" people. I loved it in "Borat" when he took down the holier-than-thou preachers and the obnoxious frat boys; it was less enjoyable when he was pranking the nice people in the south that invited him to dinner.

Actually, my fear of needles came from that exact incident.

Because they were going to "Operate" that night, i wasn't allowed to eat anything. and that meant since lunch, I had barely eaten.

and since they didn't know how severe the damage was to my arms. they didn't want to put the IV there, so they put it into my leg. And about 20 tries it took them. because, Random hadn't eaten, so the veins had shrunk making it hard to hit.

Random doesn't like needles...

Two ER visits for me:

1st) I gashed my thumb with a knife and ended up sitting in the waiting room with my thumb in a glass of iodine watching an entire Braves game before they stitched it up.

2nd) I broke my knee and waited at least 6 hours before they x-rayed it and confirmed it was broken. They slapped a brace on it, and told me to get to an orthopedic surgeon the next day to schedule a surgury.

You can go to the head of the line in the ER very easily.

No matter what the injury or complaint, call for an ambulance and tell them you're having chest pains.

I used to be an EMT; we knew people were abusing the system this way, but you have to take the patient at his word. If you think he's faking and it turns out he's not and he dies...

Rich/Republican's heads set to explode

WASHINGTON—House Democrats working on President Barack Obama's goal of health legislation are narrowing in on an income tax surcharge on the highest-paid wage earners to help subsidize insurance for the 50 million people who lack it.

Pushing to complete a comprehensive health care overhaul plan by Friday and bring it up for committee votes next week, House Democrats abandoned earlier money-raising proposals, including a payroll tax. They met behind closed doors Thursday to fine-tune the details.

Rep. Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said he expected to have a draft bill on Friday.

"The leadership's doing meetings with lots of members to hear their concerns, talk it through. But legislation doesn't come together until we actually start working on specific amendments on specific language and that's what we'll do next week," said the California Democrat.

The action in the House stood in contrast to the Senate, where Democrats edged away from their goal of passing health care legislation by early August amid heightening partisan controversy over tax increases and a proposed new government role in providing insurance to consumers.

As discussed in the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, the surtax would apply to individuals with adjusted gross income of more than $200,000 and couples over $250,000, according to officials involved in the discussion. Most spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks were private.

Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., a member of the panel, said the panel is looking at a surtax around 3.5 percent.

"The Haters" have already taken over the comments forum, but as I noted:

Lest we forget, during WWII, the highest wage-earners were taxed at nearly 90% to fund the war effort. Was it socialism then?

It all depends on what your priorities are as a society.

Good morning, bloggers! Excellent post, Raine!

Well, I wrapped up my online AZ Constitution course, so I will check on the grade in the next day or so to see if I need to take the final. (I went with the pass/fail option.)

If you know anyone else in Phoenix who is looking for work, Monster.com is having a big job fair in Scottsdale tomorrow morning. While it is not education, I will check it out.

Several media sources are reporting that there are massive protests in Iran, with a strong response by the police.

I would urge people to check out the Iran Uprising Blogging (Thursday July 9) for many stories and videos.

Here is an excerpt from the Reuters story:

Iranian police fire in air to disperse protesters

By Parisa Hafezi

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Riot police fired in the air to disperse pro-reform demonstrators in central Tehran on Thursday, nearly four weeks after a disputed election triggered mass protests across Iran, a witness said.

Police detained several people among hundreds of protesters who turned up near Tehran University in defiance of a ban on gatherings for the anniversary of violent student demonstrations in 1999, the witness told Reuters. Another witness said police also used tear gas.

It appeared to be the worst outbreak of unrest in Tehran since security forces last month quelled days of opposition protests over the June 12 election, which moderate opponents of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad say was rigged in his favor.

Even though Thursday's rally was a far cry from those that erupted after the vote, it was a sign of continuing discontent among at least some opposition supporters, who took part in the demonstration despite a heavy presence by the security forces.

Look I'm sick and freaking tired of these callers and pundits and all bitching cause we didn't turn into of fucking magical fairyland the minute or the first 6 months that Obama was elected. EVERY PERSON elected to the office of President GETS 4 YEARS, to try and shape the country for what they believe is the betterment of the people they serve.

Just because we don't have pixies to brush our teeth for us, or elves to bring us sweet tea on the the veranda, or a unicorn in every home does not mean the have reached fucking failure!

I, a democrat from the time of the first mock voting we did in elementary school, even gave Bush (both of them) the benefit of the doubt. I'm an AMerican its what I do. I trust that the people in charge have there shit together enough to make sure that our beautiful country isn't put in danger.

I'm sorry for the swearing but I'm really sick of people saying how disappointed they are cause they only see with single mindedness.

That just goes to show you that it's easier to break a country than fix it. He was in office 8 years, but the country has been broken since September 12.

Stay on the beltway, Sir. Even two years from now 95 will most likely be under construction. Better to avoid the aggrevation.

WHOA.. The very house I live in has gone national.

Projo.com - RI Tea Party group kicked out & BANNED from Bristol Fourth of July Parade

Shit.. it's on Freeperville.

My landlord is the person who ran the Float Committee for this year's parade and is the person who threw this idiot out. He did it because they were handing out fliers (copies of the Constitution) from their float. In turn, this psycho bitch GAVE OUT HIS PHONE NUMBER IN A MASS EMAIL TO HER TEA PARTY PSYCHO FRIENDS and said she was kicked out for handing out copies of the Constitution. She also lied and said that another float was handing things out and they were not penalized.

He's been on phone patrol all day and all night, received non-stop calls from mindless GOOperatoms across the country including a veiled death threat from some retired General in South Carolina (who eventually turned around, apologized and said he would support the committee financially AND break all ties with the nutjob who runs RITP, has been defamed on two radio hosts in the state, and has been asked to give interviews on local television and radio.

Yikes. Good thing I'm goin' to visit my mom this weekend! I'm gonna make sure we lock the doors for now on too.
