My grandparents came from Europe before WWII.
My Maternal grandmother had 8 brothers and sisters. They were told by my great-grandparents to not speak English in their home, even if it was broken English.
My Mother was born in 1945, a few months before VE-Day. My father was born on the fourth of July a few years earlier. Both of them are first-generation Americans. After the end of the war, while the world learned of the Holocaust, the anti-German sentiment was understandably high in the United States. My grandparents were born in Germany. All four of them. I am of German descent (2nd generation). I am utterly appalled at what happened last night.
My maternal Grandparents were told to go back to where they came from. My father recalled as a child of being told the same thing in grade school. he was bullied because his parents were German.
Ilhan Omar is a wife, She is a mother. She is American and she is a member of Congress, This is her response after the Trump and his rally chanted: Send Her Back:
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.
