With all that has been happening, there are huge and important news stories that never make it to the nation's conscience. Yesterday we could clearly say that the White House is a superspreader -- and it's practically a ghost town. That's perfect for Halloween, but deeply problematic for the governance of our country.

As many of you know, we have a long-standing subscription to the Washington Post. We live in the region and it serves our needs locally as well as nationally. When the New York Times broke the first story about the occupant's taxes, along with the story that he owes $421 million dollars to unknown creditors, I decided to take advantage of a $1 a week basic digital subscription to the New York Times so I could read these articles in full. I have access to all the news content they release. It's worth the price to be able to get behind a paywall. This is not an advertisement, but rather more reason to support journalism.

Yesterday, a story broke that should have consumed every person with a moral compass to the point of tears. The detention policy is worse than I could have imagined.

‘We Need to Take Away Children,’ No Matter How Young, Justice Dept. Officials Said

It's easy to forget we still have families separated in cages. It's easy to forget that they are detention camps. It's easy to forget. I don't think it's because I want to. It's because it is almost too much to comprehend with all of the other inhumanities that this administration is a part of. This story however, is a true shock to the system.
“We need to take away children,” Mr. Sessions told the prosecutors, according to participants’ notes. One added in shorthand: “If care about kids, don’t bring them in. Won’t give amnesty to people with kids.”

Rod J. Rosenstein, then the deputy attorney general, went even further in a second call about a week later, telling the five prosecutors that it did not matter how young the children were. He said that government lawyers should not have refused to prosecute two cases simply because the children were barely more than infants.
From the report are the following bullets points the NYT reported:
Government prosecutors reacted with alarm at the separation of children from their parents during a secret 2017 pilot program along the Mexican border in Texas. “We have now heard of us taking breastfeeding defendant moms away from their infants,” one government prosecutor wrote to his superiors. “I did not believe this until I looked at the duty log.”

Border Patrol officers missed serious felony cases because they were stretched too thin by the zero-tolerance policy requiring them to detain and prosecute all of the misdemeanor illegal entry cases. One Texas prosecutor warned top Justice Department officials in 2018 that “sex offenders were released” as a result.

Senior Justice Department officials viewed the welfare of the children as the responsibility of other agencies and their duty as tracking the parents. “I just don’t see that as a D.O.J. equity,” Mr. Rosenstein told the inspector general.

The failure to inform the U.S. Marshals Service before announcing the zero-tolerance policy led to serious overcrowding and budget overruns. The marshals were forced to cut back on serving warrants in other cases, saying that “when you take away manpower, you can’t make a safe arrest.”
Where are these babies? When they were deported who took them in? the chances that they were victims of human trafficking are high. The idea they came with their parents to seek amnesty here for the very thing they are likely victims of now is deeply ugly and reminiscent of atrocities that we built museums to warn the world about.

Jeff Sessions needs to be tried in an international court for crimes against humanity. The carnage, racism, cruelty and lack of any human decency from the Republican party needs to end.

Do not vote only because you life depends on it. Vote because millions of other lives depend on it.

Resist.
