With trial of ex-cop murderer Chauvin going on yesterday, it seemed like anything else would be buried. However, everyone's favorite game show "Republicans Behaving Badly" had an extra-special episode yesterday entitled "Matt Gaetz Is Said to Face Justice Dept. Inquiry Over Sex With an Underage Girl". This story - broken by the NY Times - is being picked up and repeated (yes, it's "gone viral"):
Representative Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida and a close ally of former President Donald J. Trump, is being investigated by the Justice Department over whether he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old and paid for her to travel with him, according to three people briefed on the matter.

Investigators are examining whether Mr. Gaetz violated federal sex trafficking laws, the people said. A variety of federal statutes make it illegal to induce someone under 18 to travel over state lines to engage in sex in exchange for money or something of value. The Justice Department regularly prosecutes such cases, and offenders often receive severe sentences.

Just a quick reminder that the shovel-faced republican U.S. House rep from FL raised eyebrows while palling around with a teenaged boy who he claimed was his adopted son, despite there being no evidence of it:
... Matt Gaetz claims that Nestor is his adopted son. There are no adoption papers to support this claim, and Nestor has a whole-ass father who is alive and well and hasn’t given his son up for adoption. Yet, no one has truly questioned the nature of this adoptive relationship that doesn’t include an actual adoption.

He was also the lone vote against a human-trafficking bill in 2017. His claim at the time was that his vote was against expanding government. The Republican-controlled Senate didn't see it that way, and received a unanimous vote of approval.

There is some speculation that this investigation into Gaetz's activities with a 17-year-old girl is an offshoot of an ongoing investigation into a FL tax collector's arrest for child sex trafficking. That person - Joel Greenberg, seen here in a photo with Gaetz and convicted criminal Roger Stone - has an ugly story all his own:

In August, federal investigators added charges that Greenberg had used his government position to commit identity theft and accused him of sex trafficking a child.

Investigators said they found several fake IDs inside Greenberg’s home, and accused the tax collector of improperly accessing a state database to access personal information of people he was in “sugar daddy” relationships with, including a minor victim between the ages of 14 and 17. Greenberg allegedly made the fake IDs to help “facilitate his efforts to engage in commercial sex acts,” according to the indictment.

Also from the Wapo article:
On Tuesday, the case against Greenberg, 36, gained national prominence after the New York Times reported that it had also sparked a separate criminal probe into allegations that Gaetz had sex with a teenage girl.

Just for fun, here's another picture of Gaetz and Greenberg hanging together:

This certainly has all the markings of a plea bargain: low-level pol busted, then suddenly higher-level pol is under investigation. How long before Gaetz's best-bud Gym Jordan faces the consequences of allowing a doctor to molest the athletes under his care?

It's always the ones trying to make a name for themselves that end up doing so for sordid gross reasons.
