The Court and the Jesters
Author: BobR    Date: 2016-02-17 11:50:49

Here at FourFreedomsBlog, we try to be topical when possible. Sometimes, though, a big story occurs and it's only several days later that a writer gets a chance to post some thoughts. Such is the case of the surprise passing of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. We got the news this past Saturday, and it is now 4 days since that political bombshell detonated all over the cable programs. In this case, though, sometimes a little distance is a good thing, as it allows the knee-jerk reactions to bubble up and form a scum on the surface.

Good Morning.

We're going to go back a few weeks and clear a couple of older stories from my cache.

At the end of January, veteran Barry Coates passed on with little fanfare, like so many before him who served without ever expecting recognition or reward.

Good Morning.

Well, you're all not really my target audience for this one today. I will be doing a rare thing and I'll tootle my own horn and pass this along to the book of face.

February 8, 2016 was the 106th birthday of the Boy Scouts of America. In the days following, there have been a number of stories circulating around the Book of Face asking the same thing - Is Scouting still relevant?.

Total disconnect

The GOP insanity continues. On Tuesday, President Obama released the final budget of his presidency. On cue, the Freedom Caucus Tea Party Lunatics decided they were going to do things their way, ignoring long standing traditions and ignoring the new Speaker of the House

Get The Lead Out
Author: BobR    Date: 2016-02-10 12:22:16

The Flint Michigan water crisis is bringing to the forefront something we rarely think about - the effect of lead on the human body. It almost seems anachronistic these days. Humans have known about the problems of lead poisoning for centuries, way longer than we've understood germs, or the basic structure of the solar system. It's amazing that despite knowing the problems for over a millennium that we done so little to eliminate its dangers from our lives, simply because it is so useful. We used lead in paint to brighten the colors and lead in gasoline to enhance the octane ratings. We finally smartened up and eliminated lead from paint in 1978 and from gasoline in 1985.

That's why it's so maddening that due to cutting corners to save on costs, the people of Flint, Michigan have been poisoned by their elected (and appointed) leaders. It's worse than that, though.

Good Morning.

Let's talk about dogs this morning. Many of us have furrier four-footed friends about the house. As "Man's Best Friend", they've been companions, beasts of burden, and dogs of war for untold centuries, if not millennia.

As I was looking over the many different issues of the morning, and recovering from seeing a human animal hybrid last night, I came across an article that helped me see things in a perspective that I wasn't able to do before.
