Yesterday the Quake in Chile hit home because I have a friend who lives their part-time. It turns out he is okay, thank God, but for those hours when we first heard of the disaster we were at a loss of what to do. My partner and I watched the news and tried to contact him but were left waiting to hear from him. It's painful to have to wait while watching the devastation on the news. I imagine how much worse it would be for the family members waiting to hear from spouses and children, or from a fiance waiting to hear from their partner or waiting to hear if your Grandparents are alive. It's a long wait.
Things like this make me so grateful for things I take for granted. Even silly little things like facebook, which is, oddly enough, how my friend made contact with the outside world at first, and we found that he was safe.
Communication have come a long way since I was a child and we had those fabulous rotary dial phones. (Remember when you hated having to call a friend that had lots of long numbers like '8', '9' or '0' because if you made a mistake you'd have to ....... START FROM THE BEGINNING! That's right, youngun's, there was not 'CLR' button on the rotary dial phone).
Eventually, we got the push button phone (many of which came in different colors other than black, like Avocado Green). And eventually we had the advent of the beeper which became the status symbol of Wall Street brokers and pimps, both of whom would still have to trek to a pay phone to return a call.
Now, there is no excuse not to have many many friends and to stay in touch with them. So, so many ways. And ways to meet new friends as well. (Though, one should always be careful).
So, your homework assignment for today is to reach out to someone that you haven't heard from in a long time. Check to see if they are okay, what they are up to and to share something with them.
Corny? Perhaps. But as you know, I am a corny person.

Sorry I didn't say anything earlier, VJ. IT been a helluva day. The icing on the cake was that my wallet went missing and someone decided to charge $120 in metro cards on one my debit card. ThankfulFramerica (for all the bad, they are very good at stuff like this, and I am grateful) had already put a fraud hold it. Those charges are not my responsibility & a new card is forthcoming.
Also thankfully there was nothing of else important in the wallet, that I suspect either fell or was procured from my bag or pocket. It just sucks.
In regard to your post, I sadly learned last nite that a friend that I meat thru Facebook, and was very fond of, lost his battle with leukemia. Your post today could not have come at a better time for me. It's not corny at all, I had another friend say this yesterday on FB: "You know what I love about FB? You never know if you are posting for your own benefit or for the benefit of others. I love not knowing! Either way it's fun!"
To which I responded: That's the beauty of everything, if you think about it.
Every day is a chance to reach out to people we care of. In these times, it really fulfilling to reach out to those we have lost touch with, for these very ideas.
Facebook has made it easier, buy even before I joined, every Christmastime, I always made it a rule to fine one friend that I lost touch with, just to tell them I still care, even if life or miles have drawn us apart.
It's not corny at all, it's what unites us.

Awesome blog today VJ - sorry for not getting to it until this late in the day. As Raine said, it was a crazy morning, a busy afternoon, and then hockey.
I am grateful for the internet and sites like this (and facebook) that allow me to keep in touch with those I love the world over.

Raine, wonderfully and beautifully said. Not the stuff of your debit card being stolen, that sucked. When I found out the Mikal had passed, I was saddened. I had a long talk with him about a year or so ago when I found out he and my dad went to the same college. Small world, right?
