Stop giving them ground.

Last September I wrote a post entitled: They don't represent me. in it, I stated
So many people marched for Civil rights in this nation. People died for the cause. So, the questions I have are: Are we going to let a group of people who want to drag this country back to Jim Crow days frame a debate that they created? Are we going to let a small group of white people decide the direction of this country? Are we going to allow for another civil war to happen? The question I ask of myself: am I going to let those people represent me?
The answer remains the same: they don't represent me. Last June I wrote:
They are ratcheting up this environment of fear and hatred, toward our administration, towards abortion rights activists, towards women, towards Blacks, towards Hispanics, towards Jews, towards Muslims, towards liberals -- towards anyone who isn't a white conservative it seems. We've written about this on the blog before.

When a man is killed at a museum that is a memorial to remind people of the horrors of hate-crimes, we have a problem. When radio hosts defend murder we have an even bigger problem. Domestic Terrorism is alive and well in America. I wish that the right wing could understand that. Instead, it appears they support it.

Things are getting dangerous out there. That DHS report was correct. There ARE those who would undermine this great nation and make it less secure by justifying their own violent agenda by whatever means necessary. They would seek to create terror in the hearts and minds of those they find disagreements with. I have said it before, and I will say it again, it is Domestic Terror. Those that are complicit in fanning the flames of hatred regarding this terror must stop denying culpability. Words matter.
This is not a "best of" blog. It's a reminder that while some in the media are finally beginning to understand and report on this issue of racism, hate and violence since last April -- I am deeply concerned it is too little reporting and a bit too late.

We are coming up to the Anniversaries of the Waco Siege and the Oklahoma City Bombing. It's easy to remember those two deadly historical events, but what's easier to forget is the rhetoric that led up to both these incidents. In the two blogs I cited above, both posted on Facebook, conservative acquaintances took serious umbrage to the points I was trying to make. Consistently, people on the right tell me these are just isolated incidents and they are not connected in any way. I believe many of them do believe that. They believe it because they themselves do not feel like this is something that represents them. The reality tho, is that it does, Every day more and more it does. You can see it on the streets and in the words spoken in the Halls of Congress.

I can understand why people don't want to believe that about a party they claimed to be associated with. It is far more comfortable to say these are isolated incidents and that they do not represent a person's ideology. The problem, however lies in the fact that we have had too many instances of conservatives inciting violence. Far too many. Just yesterday, we heard of Death threats on Bart Stupak's life, Threats to the brother of Rep. Perriello (intended to be to the representative himself), assassination threats of Children of Rep. Slaughter, A right wing blog has asked tea Party protesters to show up at the home of another Congressman as well. Rachel Maddow did an amazing job of documenting this last night, and when the video becomes available, I will add it to this blog. Even Shep Smith over at Fox is wondering about this.
"What we do know is that when leaders on either side of the aisle go with this over-inflated rhetoric and they tell us it's the end of the world, it's Armageddon, the Marxists have taken over Washington, it's the end of the world as we know it, we're moving into socialism," he said, "when they say things like that, that maybe some of them don't believe, and then the fringes believe it, and then they go out and do stupid things...Well, I mean, it's all kind of tied together isn't it?"
Here is the point that I have been trying to make for years now, words matter. How they are used, and how they are manipulated so people hear what you want them to hear. The right wing is very, very good at this. And when I say the right wing, at this point, I AM talking about Republican members of Congress. I saw them thank the Tea Party. I saw them use incendiary words that are usually used to incite anger and violence. They are using those words to do just that.

Sadly we on the left, in blogs, messageboards, facebook and twitter often reply to these actions and words with snark and sarcasm. I am the first to use humor in any given situation, but it is becoming increasingly clear to me that the more we do that, the more ground they gain. It is time that we confront these people with words that mean something. We need to try to make people understand that our humor in these situations are not meant to excuse this behavior. John Stewart and Stephen Colbert can do this -- they are professionals. Even then, they are often reaching out (albeit unintentionally) to those that already agree with them. Not a single conservative watching either show is going to sit back and say -- 'Hey, I think he has a point. I need to stop abetting this behavior.' Most often, they sit back at night and believe in their hearts that they are the exception, not the rule. Stewart and Colbert are not changing hearts and minds about this impending tipping point in this nation. It's not their job.

AND-- it is nearing a tipping point. Until the media, along with people like you and I start taking the threats of violence seriously, it will get worse. Make no mistake about it, people like Glenn Back, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, Sarah Palin, Steve King, Michelle Bachmann, Pete Hoekstra, and many others who claim to represent the conservative movement are upping the stakes. Even if they don't believe what they are saying, they believe they stand to gain from it. There are people in America who hear the words and are reacting to it thinking that they have something to gain from it as well.

Sarcasm isn't going to stop those people from following through on their threats. When we snark, I truly believe it is important to follow thru with explanations, because the snark DOES come across to these people as tacit approval for their behavior. It is easy to point fingers and blame, but in the way we go about trying to rectify this horrible situation, we must be responsible and not add to the issues. Don't get me wrong, I am not calling for anyone to stop using humor as a way to release steam. I would go insane if I didn't have a sense of humor about all of this. I am asking that we do more. As impossible as it seems communication and explanation do work. Non-violent resistance works.

Think about this: They really don't seem to have the comprehension that what they are approving of is violent and hate-filled, so why would they be shamed into thinking otherwise with the use of sarcasm?

and

Raine

Morning

You know I don't recall people all the left going to the extreme's that the people on the right have been going to when we didn't win our arguement (there might have been a handful but nothing like this craziness)

tech question -

at home I have my laptop and wireless router all set up but I seem to have problems holding a wireless signal - is there something general that I should check out when I get home to stop this annoying occurance?

Where is your router in relation to where you are using the laptop, Mala.

router is upstairs hooked up to the main computer, laptop is downstairs with me

Metal is your main enemy when it comes to wireless. That metal could be in the form of house wiring, the HVAC vent pipes, or metal supports in the building frame (or any other number of things). Try moving the router to another location downstairs - sometimes a foot is all you need.

Bob, you're horning in my trouble shooting action! Distance isn't an issue, but I'm being thorough. So I agree with Bobber, there is something metallic tween the laptop and router.

Make sure there are no cordless phones (especially the 2.4GHz ones) near the router or laptop.

Well, I have a duct that runs down a wall from the office to the living room and I have cordless phones - so ya'll are tellin' me I'm screwed for getting my signal to stay?

Comment by BobR on 03/25/2010 13:38:34
It's way past time for the media and politicians to speak out against this violent language and actions. I'll give Boehner some minor props for saying so on FAUX News, even if he DID temper it with "they have a right to be angry", and his outburst Sunday night on the House floor.

It needs to be a LOT more direct and loud. These domestic terrorists out there need to realize that they are NOT helping their cause. The Republicans MUST disavow them and their behavior in the strongest of terms.

when I rearrange the office I may be able to get away from the duct work more but how far from a cordless do I need to be?

Would a flat screen tv also interfer with a signal - my neighbors just put one up on party wall

While I love the Declaration of Independance it is not a governing document

The flat screen isn't a problem. We have our wireless router right next to the TV.

as to the phone, I cannot answer that.

Questions with no answer:

Wouldn't making death threats against members of Congress normally be concidered seditious or revolutionary acts?

Suppose the President calls out the National Guard to ring the Capitol in order to protect the Congress from a perceived 'act of war'? Wouldn't that start the rebellion the tea party so desperately wants? (Would they win? Do they have tanks or an air force?)

About Baby-Killers....how many babies died today from asthma attacks, or cancer, or hell, even simple trauma because they didn't have insurance and their families couldn't afford the proper treatments?

I don't know what it is. You know how much I violently, desperately hated George W. Bush and everything he represented. I don't recall being motivated to call members of Congress and threaten them, or throw bricks, or whatnot.

Maybe it's because I don't read the Bible. Maybe it's because I have an education. Maybe it's because of my upbringing. Maybe it's because of the brotherhood of Scouting. Maybe it's because I have an ounce of common sense.

I don't know what it is.

(No offense to any Bible-readers present. I read it too. Just musing.)

Comment by Raine on 03/25/2010 14:29:36
TriSec -- when we lost elections -- we mobilized when they lost elections they resorted to violence.

I cannot tell you how disgusted I am. We spent a glorious day on Sunday at the Capitol.

And we did it in the very midst of people who were truly filled with hate, that says a lot about the power of love -- they did not ruin the day.

I will say this, tho -- they are serious. They use the bible as a shield -- they don't even understand what they are saying. They use the 2nd amendment as a shield -- they don;t understand the constitution.

They use freedom as a shield and they don't get that they are trying to shut down freedom for everyone that isn't like them.

When engaged they have nothing but sound bites and vitriol.

It DOES border on sedition, and death threats, to the best of my knowledge have always been illegal -- whether you are a U.S. representative or not.

Comment by TriSec on 03/25/2010 14:54:50
Listening to the Stupak calls on TRMS right now.

Screw the FCC - they should play all these threats unedited and take the fine so we can truly hear how disgusting these people are.

Comment by livingonli on 03/25/2010 15:18:09
Good morning everyone. I wonder if they started rounding up the people who made the death threats would shut the teabaggers up or would they just get more insane than they are already.

this goes right to the point I was trying to make -- WORDS MATTER.

What the heck did they think they would accomplish using phrases like “locked, loaded and ready” ?

Thank you for this link Will. I cannot believe that they did not know what they wrought. I will however give them credit for disassociating themselves from the rhetoric. I would like for them to take responsibility for being a part of creating this atmosphere.

If a Minuteman Group (especially THIS one) has decided it is too much, then we should take heed.

Well, I just tried to call Congressman Stupak's office to say thank you...no surprise, they're not picking up and his voicemail is full.

So I called Ed Markey and asked him to pass along the word.

It's just as important for supporters to call in as the haters...maybe even more so.

So give 'em a call, willya?

I might send a fax if I can find the number.. that might help take the edge off.

Well he did the parody of it on The Simpsons a number of years back.

Bart: What's this?

Lisa: One of those campy 70's throwbacks that appeals to Generation Xers.

Bart: I wish they would have another Vietnam to thin out their ranks a little.

Both ways of communication are critical

It is important that they know they have supporters -- even if we disagree on the particulars. I know I keep mentioning being there on Sunday-- but I know in my heart that theses people on our side of the aisle appreciate knowing that they are doing the peoples work. They deserve our thanks JUST as often as our displeasure.

And -- seeing what they are going thru -- I say double down on the support part.

Mala using the cordless phone at the same time when you are using the router that's the problem since they are on the same 2.4 ghz frequency. Just don't take any calls when you are watching TV and using your laptop.

Raine, thank you for an excellent blog today. I hope that everyone here is well.

Here is an article that Mike Malloy referenced yesterday from the JewishJournal.com site.

Tea Party dangers ahead?

BY ROB ESHMAN

It will take a while to know for certain whether the Health Care Reform Act helped our country or hurt it. My sense is that, as with many pieces of sweeping legislation, it is the imperfect beginning of an important journey.

But one immediate upside to last Sunday evening’s vote is the wet blanket it threw over that dangerous volksfest called the Tea Party. I am no more paranoid than any Jew born after the Holocaust needs to be, but the Tea Partiers raised my internal homeland defense code to orange. Maybe not burnt orange, but at least a deep carrot.

It started with the television images of Tea Partiers disrupting meetings, shouting down Congress members at town halls. As a Jew, the only place where I expect to see that kind of rude, anti-democratic behavior is at a Knesset debate. Elsewhere, it alarms me.

The Tea Party gathered steam, gaining momentum as President Obama stayed mostly behind the scene.

It is a good article, and shows how many forms of hate are arising in the Tea Party movement.
