Reefer Madness!
Author: BobR    Date: 04/21/2010 10:41:45

Yesterday was April 20, just another day on the calendar for most people. For others, though, the date carries a certain significance. What I am "reefering" to is that it's a day that just goes to pot for some people, where they have joint sessions and end up in the weeds.

Okay - I suppose that's enough with the puns... I'll just pull out a box of stoned wheat thins and... D'OH!

Seriously though - yesterday's date (4/20) is a subculture term for smoking pot. According to lore, it was coined in the early 70s:
The term was coined from a group of teenagers at San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California, United States in 1971. The teens would meet after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke marijuana outside the school.

Since it's also a convenient date, there are pot festivals nationwide on that date. Some involve the use of medicinal marijuana, and some are just promotions for legalization (including groups like CAMP, although in typical stoner fashion, they are putting theirs off until May).

My favorite 420 is made by Sweetwater Brewing in Atlanta. It's a delicious, crisp American-style pale ale. The company denies any reefer connection, but their trucks are covered in tie-dye art, so who are they kidding, really?

Marijuana was criminalized back when hemp was made illegal because W.R. Hearst felt it was too competitive with his paper business, and "bought" the legislation. After that came over-the-top scare campaigns like "Reefer Madness", and obscene "mandatory sentences" that sent young people to jail for possessing a single joint.

Today's culture still seems to be undecided about what to do with pot. Some people and companies realize that when consumed at home in modest quantities, there is no more to fear than someone having a cocktail after work. Some companies have taken it step further. A hotel in CA has announced it is "pot friendly", where guests are welcome to toke up in their rooms. I do have to wonder about the smoke detectors, though...

Still - despite marijuana being in the forefront of culture for over 40 years now, legalizing it still does not seem to be a good idea to a lot of people. A CNBC poll shows that 55 % of Americans are against legalization, while 33% are for it (the other 18% were too stoned to answer... Kidding!). Despite the valid argument that legalizing would increase tax revenues and decrease crime, still only 1/3 of the populace thinks it should be legalized. The splits occur along generational lines, so it's like that as time progresses, so too will the attitudes toward legalization.

So whether or not you celebrated yesterday, we raise a bong and say... um... what we were we talking about?....

Greetings, Comrades!

Well, in the spirit of today's blog....

Well over a century ago, there was a vast Matayabas empire on the island of Mindanao. Acres and acres of marijuana were grown, processed, and sold to the highest bidder.

It was Uncle Sam....the Navy used it to make rope.

My Grandpa (and namesake) would have gone into the family business, but he was a pretty smart man, and even in the 1920s saw the writing on the wall and came to the West Coast about 20 years before Japan destroyed everything.

According to my father, grandpa died in 1979 cursing the Japanese with his last breath.

BTW, I am *so* glad Dr. Maddow has a national show so she can share Senator Brown (R - Retahded) with the rest of you all.

His only saving grace is that it's only until 2012, not a full term. Maybe Congressman Mike Capuano will run again...

Isn't that new "show me your papers" law pretty much one of those things Manassas got in trouble for a few years ago? I suspect there will be challenges

I doubt it is, Manassas was just trying to take control of overcrowding issue - this new one is far more insidious

Morning all!

I've taken a bit of a turn.. decided to scale back my "recreational" internet use at the office. Partly because it's interfering with my work, and partly because... well damnit I have the same routine checking websites each day that takes about 10-15 minutes!

That is the KEY -- one can only be stopped if there is reasonable suspicion of a CRIME. -- being an undocumented immigrant is a CIVIL offense, NOT Criminal.

And that is why What they are doing in California is not constitutional.

Alright, I'm off my game today. I just spent 20 minutes researching a problem that doesn't exist.

3061439 is not the same report as 3061349.

PEBKAC error.

This is the Arizona law. Apparently right-wing douchebags feel that Mexican Drug cartels are running rapant in Arizona especially in Cochise County. Nice that they are doing this in a county named after a Native American leader considering how they have been treated by the whites who immigrated to this country.

I've pretty much stopped listening to Thom, except yesterday when I left the station on and walked in on the climate change denier, who'd he have on?

Might be a good couple of days to go planespotting....a BA 747 just flew over me whilst I was out for my constitutional. They rarely fly out of Logan at this hour. (Trust me on this.)

I'd wager it'll be busy for at least a week.

Scoop: I did hear about the letter....and I've actually visited those gravesites. Very low-key indeed, as a proper New Englander would have.
