Cap? What Cap?
Author: Raine    Date: 05/17/2010 12:44:01

So far BP has failed to cap the oil gushing up on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico. The original Containment dome failed almost immediately, and the second smaller cap, also known os the "Top Hat" has now been scrapped in favor of a big tube to suck the oil up and onto a a ship.

Speaking of caps, the GOP blocked raising BP's Liability cap Why? Because the Company Promised To Cover Damages
Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) suggested on Sunday that raising the cap was unnecessary because BP had given him it's word that it would cover the costs of the spill in the Gulf.

"I've offered supportive legislation to expand it also," the Senator said on ABC's "This Week." "But BP people repeatedly stated at the hearing and have told me personally, they are going to be responsible for all legitimate claims that are made against them. So I think we need to watch that closely. [snip]

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) made much the same case as Sessions on Sunday. During an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press," he argued that BP would "be held to" its promise to pay for all damages.

"They ought to pay for it and they will pay for it," McConnell said.
So no caps on the Spill, and no caps for BP -- despite the cry from Americans and the Administration to have liability caps removed. Once again, the GOP has decided to side with corporations over people. So what now? The Long Tube solution is being touted as a huge success by BP -- One problem: It's not a success at all.
Yet even as the company reported the success after weeks of fruitless efforts, scientists warned oil that has already spewed into the Gulf could have dire consequences for the environment. Computer models show the black ooze may have already entered a major current flowing toward the Florida Keys, a researcher told the Associated Press on Sunday.

The contraption used by BP was hooked up successfully and sucking oil from a pipe at the blown well Sunday afternoon after being hindered by several setbacks. Engineers remotely guiding robot submersibles had worked since Friday to place the tube into a 21-inch pipe nearly a mile below the sea.
Also being touted by BP is the success of funneling 20% - ONE FIFTH -- of the oil out of the gulf...
BP chief operating officer Doug Suttles says a mile-long tube has been collecting more than one-fifth of the oil that's spewing into the Gulf of Mexico from a blown-out well.

Speaking Monday on NBC's "Today" show, Suttles said the tube has been siphoning more than 1,000 barrels a day, or 42,000 gallons. BP has estimated about 5,000 barrels a day, or 210,000 gallons a day, has been leaking out.

He says they hope to be able to collect more oil as they ramp up the effort but they won't be able to get all of it.
What? Let's go back to what Senator Jeff Sessions stated yesterday on ABC's This Week:
They signed as the responsible party, in other words, when they got the privilege to drill in the gulf, they said 'we will be responsible for all damage to the beaches, all clean-up costs.' Then the question is how far beyond that do they go, and other consequential economic or other damages. They have said they will be responsible for paying them. They should have more than enough money to pay them. And we expect them to pay every cent."
So what part did I miss?

I didn't miss anything, while BP is bragging about reclaiming 20% of that it's also saying that they don't think they can get all of it. What part of responsible have I missed? BP and the GOP STILL don't seem to comprehend is that it's not about the amount of money it's going to take, it's about saving the Gulf, the wildlife and the livelihoods of the people along the Gulf shores. Instead we are being told that the Company are going get as much oil as they thing they can, based on some arbitrary goal.

And speaking of 20% -- How do we even know that is true?
Oil has been spewing since the rig Deepwater Horizon exploded April 20, killing 11 people and sinking two days later. The government shortly afterward estimated the spill at 210,000 gallons — or 5,000 barrels — a day, a figure that has since been questioned by some scientists who fear it could be far more. BP executives have stood by the estimate while acknowledging there's no way to know for sure.
BP stands by the estimates, the estimate keep changing, the GOP still seems to trust them, and we are hearing more and more of the Loop Current and the massive plumes that are under the water. From NPR:
Working on a research vessel called the Pelican, scientists have found enormous plumes of oil in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Some are more than 10 miles long and 300 feet deep. To find out why the oil is lurking below the surface, host Guy Raz talks with Vernon Asper, a professor of marine sciences at the University of Southern Mississippi, from aboard the boat.
So when is this going to end? Why am I reminded of this quote from 2008?
In a statement, the White House said President Bush and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki had spoken by video link on Thursday, when they had agreed "that improving conditions should allow for the agreements now under negotiation to include a general time horizon for meeting aspirational goals – such as the resumption of Iraqi security control in their cities and provinces and the further reduction of U.S. combat forces from Iraq."
BP is still making money. The GOP is still having it's coffers filled with lobbyists from the oil industry and the Gulf is still dying. We aren't getting answers or solutions to this unprecedented disaster.

This is so beyond unacceptable it isn't even funny. This is not success, it's criminal negligence. 1000 barrels a day is not good enough, especially considering 1000 barrels a day was the original amount BP told the Federal Government was leaking. That means 4000 barrels are still gushing from the ocean floor. So all BP has done was to meet it's own original estimates. All they're doing is moving chairs around the deck. A month later, and all they have done is gone back to exactly where they wanted to be when we first learned of this leak.

Good thing the GOP still trusts them to do the right thing. I certainly don't.

Raine

Morning, comrades! Somebody please pass the Advil?

Only your loyal TriSec could suffer a shoulder injury whilst working in a garden slightly larger than a coffee table.

But everything is in....sunflowers, tomato, cukes, green pepper, basil....and flowers out front in my little triangle. I'll post some stuff up to flickr later.

I know I'm a few days behind on this...just listening to the Friday Keithcast about BP's underestimate on how much oil is actually leaking....

Ya know, the President should just suspend all offshore drilling. Today. Right now.

I'll pay $10 a gallon for the short-term if I have to, as long as the rest of the US wakes the hell up.

(Are you listening, Cape Wind Nimbys?)

We seem to be a rather sluggish group this Monday....maybe we shouldn't have partied all weekend?

partied? I gardened, grilled and had a community yard sale and clean up .... I'm tired ...

I also worked a yard sale this weekend.. my landlord's BFF is a bit of a antique hound/hoarder and he decided to break the cycle. He did great tho - we sold about 1/3 of the stuff he had, and another third was either given away or hauled off to the dumpsters.

Scout Dork moment today...

It's the 110 anniversary of the lifting of the Siege of Mafeking during the Boer War....the defenders were led by Robert Baden-Powell...who would go on to found the Scouting movement 7 years later.

A belated good day to everyone.

My weekend was busy with work. To add to the fun, because of Hockey Night Live and fixes I didn't get home until 2 AM last night and then I had to get up early this morning to go to the doctor since I had a 10:15 appointment. The good news is I did drop 4 pounds but my blood sugar numbers are up so more tweaking there. At least I am not having the problems with the lows that I had last year. And to add to the fun, I had to go to work early today as well. Thank goodness I have Tuesday and Wednesday off except it's supposed to rain both days. At least I'll have an excuse to go see Iron Man 2.

As I mentioned in the Blog, these fuckers are trying to tout 20% as a success. All they have done was met there own self imposed expectations, and screw everything else. It's all about the money -- and nothing else.

It's depressing. I will say this -- at least Katrina got the attention in the media it deserved.

Well, I guess we have a couple of weeks to hit the Cape and a whale watch or two before it gets up here.

I just had a terrible thought -- What if BP is acting like they are trying to clean this mess up, but are really trying to kill it all off so they have an excuse to use the gulf for drilling forever?

It's also called a dead Zone.

I'm a little freaked out that Randi is now talking about this.

Good evening, bloggers!

I had a long day subbing, but I am hanging in there. Raine, this is an interesting blog. We are taxing our environment to its limits.

I am not making the following story up nor is it April Fool's Day.

Oceans' fish could disappear in 40 years: UN

By Sebastian Smith (AFP) – 7 hours ago

NEW YORK — The world faces the nightmare possibility of fishless oceans by 2050 unless fishing fleets are slashed and stocks allowed to recover, UN experts warned Monday.

"If the various estimates we have received... come true, then we are in the situation where 40 years down the line we, effectively, are out of fish," Pavan Sukhdev, head of the UN Environment Program's green economy initiative, told journalists in New York.

A Green Economy report due later this year by UNEP and outside experts argues this disaster can be avoided if subsidies to fishing fleets are slashed and fish are given protected zones -- ultimately resulting in a thriving industry.

The report, which was opened to preview Monday, also assesses how surging global demand in other key areas including energy and fresh water can be met while preventing ecological destruction around the planet.

Save me, save us from tomorrow.

On a lighter note, here is a somewhat tongue-in-cheek look at immigration and how some fictional characters might fare.
