Not the Address of a Lifetime
Author: BobR    Date: 06/16/2010 12:30:22

There was a lot of anticipation heading into President Obama's oval office address last night. We wanted facts and figures, we wanted to know what the plan was for BP, for the oil still leaking, for the oil already in the Gulf. Some people wanted tough words, some people wanted details. All in all, though, we were left feeling a bit let down.

It's not that he didn't provide information. He told us:

  1. He "assembled a team of our nation’s best scientists and engineers" immediately after the rig sank, which contradicts naysayers that he dithered.

  2. They've "directed BP to mobilize additional equipment and technology", showing leadership in the face of BP's incompetence.

  3. Efforts will "capture up to 90 percent of the oil leaking out of the well" until the relief well is drilled.

  4. He restated that "we will make BP pay for the damage their company has caused" and "do whatever’s necessary to help the Gulf Coast and its people recover".

  5. We now have "nearly 30,000 personnel who are working across four states to contain and clean up the oil"

  6. "Thousands of ships and other vessels are responding in the Gulf"

  7. He's "authorized the deployment of over 17,000 National Guard members along the coast"

  8. Over "five and a half million feet of boom has been laid across the water"

  9. They've "approved the construction of new barrier islands in Louisiana to try to stop the oil before it reaches the shore"

  10. They're "working with Alabama, Mississippi and Florida to implement creative approaches to their unique coastlines"

So that's all good information, right? So what was the problem? The problem was that he blurted all that out in the first 5 minutes. After that, he went into vague generalities and "hopey-changey" feel-good pep talk. He finished it up - not with a recapping of efforts taken and plans to deal with the situation - but with prayer talk. While that may resonate with a certain segment of the population, it does nothing to reassure those who prefer we use science and creative thinking to solve our problems.

He did mention a "long-term Gulf Coast Restoration Plan", which is tantalizing, but provided no details other than it will be a collaborative effort with federal, state, and local authorities and experts.

He also mentioned that he "established a National Commission to understand the causes of this disaster and offer recommendations on what additional safety and environmental standards we need to put in place." That's good, but again - a gem buried in the fluff.

He also took a swipe at Republican "business-first" policies, saying "[the MMS] has become emblematic of a failed philosophy that views all regulation with hostility". He went on to mention that Ken Salazar was tasked with cleaning it up, but it hasn't happened fast enough, so they are bringing in a new person to head up that agency.

After all that, he went on a long rambling discussion about the need for getting off oil. It had the feel of a campaign promise, more than a specific plan of action. It drowned all the previous information in a sea of words. The capper was the aforementioned religious pandering.

Going back and reviewing the speech, I am somewhat reassured that he did indeed cover a lot of information. It just didn't feel that way watching it in real time. It felt unfocused and finished weak. Coming from such a great orator, it was a disappointment.

Morning, comrades.

No joy in Mudville today. I did not watch the President last night....was being a provincial Bostonian and worrying about an insignificant sporting event. (in the big picture.)

You know the more I think about this address last night, the more I realize that the biggest failure was the punditry from the right AND the left. The words were all there, but they didn't want to listen, they wanted drama and showtunes.

This was about where we go from here, and it was a clarion call to change this nation's energy independance. The last time a president did anything like this from the Oval Office was 1979-- Jimmy Carter.

Will America FINALLY listen?

wow - the hyperbole from Jim and Chris is getting monotonous. There is a difference between "constructive" and "destructive" criticism.

I like it.

I also wonder if he should have waited until after his meeting with BP today so that he could report the details.

Good morning everyone.

Nice to know Sarah Palin is working hard for that big paycheck at Fox News and I do wish Obama used TriSec's speech.

Look, this speech wasn;t great, but for the love of god, he touched on HUGE issues.

One of them being peak oil -- something that no other president has ever has the nerve to talk about.

Did they want him to look like The Rock playing Barack Obama on SNL? Do people not realize that this is SO fucking huge that it is almost inconceivable, and the President has pledged to do everything he can in the Gulf, and ALSO said he was going forward to change the way this country uses fossil fuels?

I don't know what people want anymore. I don't. Maybe they really want Superman as president.

Comment by Raine on 06/16/2010 16:23:12
Ok the 20 billion escrow account was set up?

This is a good thing, right?

Comment by Raine on 06/16/2010 16:36:32
*sigh* ok, I have to rant a bit, and If I am wrong, please tell me.

Thom just said he was GLAD to hear the Nat Guard was being deployed. I found that disturbing to hear coming from him as I have known What that they were there right from the start. It was weeks - WEEKS ago that he deployed those 17,000 service members to the gulf. Hell -- I posted a link from the DoD yesterday.

And here lies a big problem, for me. Progressives like Thom, (and others - like Olberman), complain about the lack of reporting from our media, and claim to be the ones who are willing to carry the torch, and yet, in this case, they have done the opposite.

It seems as tho suddenly the President isn't progressive enough for them, and they have chosen to not do the research that the MSM should be doing, the same research they claim they want to do.

I could be wrong here, but I am terribly disappointed by the progressive media at this point. I would have hoped that they would have gotten this information out there.

Comment by TriSec on 06/16/2010 17:11:59
I have not been watching the US media. I've been with the BBC for oil spill coverage from the very beginning. Very in-depth, and they seem to have better access to the area, too. Some of their video coverage is mind boggling.

Interesting to note, Mr. Obama is coming across as *too* forceful in the British media, where our side of the pond doesn't think he's doing enough.

Go figure.

Comment by Raine on 06/16/2010 17:20:50
Ok seriously--- SERIOUSLY?

What the F*CK is up with Thom interviewing the proprietor of the Moonlite Bunny ranch?

Comment by Raine on 06/16/2010 17:22:33
ok -- Seriously, Thom has LONG said he wanted Obama to be like FDR -- TODAY he wants him to be like Jimmy Carter?

I'm getting f*cking dizzy here.

Afternoon all!

Went to the doctor this morning.. muscle pull it is! He said it should take a week or two to pass, gave me a script for Naproxen and sent me packing. I can keep my walking routine (in fact he encouraged it) but if it flares up I need to go back right away.

Prescription naproxen, as I'm finding out, makes me very very drowsy..

Just heard Congressman Mike Capuano (D-Somerville) on the "Nightside" podcast from June 7.

I say again, for the record: the wrong candidate won the senate primary. He would have crushed Scott Brown.

I do hope he runs again in 2012.

Yup, pap is right -- he told BP -- 20 million dollars, up front and Now. That is huge for a president to do that.

I can't believe I am saying this, But DAMN I'm glad I turned Ed Shultz on. THIS is what constructive criticism is about.
