Crazy Wrong
Author: clintster    Date: 2010-06-24 12:03:38

This summer, as I spend time with my son and watch the World Cup on TV, I have also gotten a new addiction: Watching the beginning of Glenn Beck's FOX News show to see if he's snapped yet. It's not easy, and I am not sure how I might be able to tell, but with his falling ratings and loss of sponsors, it seems more and more that we might soon have a real-life Howard Beale moment.

http://www.eduwonk.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/spinaltap_edith_503.jpg

While waiting for the inevitable, I have noticed that as his ratings dip, he has ramped up the crazy. Not a day goes by where he doesn't accuse Woodrow Wilson of trying to destroy the nation from the 1910s. He has also taken to trying to connect various non-scandals in the administration to various modern communists, anarchists, fascists, and any other -ists he can think up. Most importantly (at least to him), Beck has also taken up valuable TV time to promote himself and his sponsors, thinking that these endorsements can only help him. Whether it's shilling gold, begging people to DVR the program, or hawking his new "political thriller", Glenn Beck just gives people a nervous "Riiiiiight" moment.

The breaking point, however, came earlier this week. Beck was introducing his show, and began to talk about the oil spill. Apparently, like so many other FOX News hosts, Beck puts the blame for the spill on the President. Like other FOX News hosts, he doesn't believe that we should put a hold on drilling because of the incident. Unlike other hosts, however, he went the extra mile to prove that offshore drilling is safe and efficient. After all who are you gonna believe, baby - him or your lying eyes?

There have been over 50,000 wells drilled in the Gulf of Mexico -- 50,000. Four thousand of these wells are deepwater wells. Seven hundred are ultra-deepwater wells. How many major incidents before this one? Zero. Now there's only one. That is a success ratio of 99.998 percent. That's a pretty good record, don't you think?

I bolded the numbers above because not only did Beck say it, he had these numbers displayed on a monitor which, surprisingly, was not covered with chalk marks. I found it curious that Beck would make such a claim. A 99.998% success rate? I did some research to validate this.

There have been a number of blowouts, explosions, and collapses that have occurred over the past few decades. This site catalogs some of the more notable ones. Although the site is meant to be a showing of oil rig disasters throughout the world, it does feature several that have happened in the Gulf of Mexico over the years:

Ensco 51 - March 1, 2001
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1151/760896840_8af58c3e5f_o.jpg

CP Baker - June 30, 1964

Ixtoc I - June 3, 1979
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1149/761014476_d0d00cc40f_o.jpg

The last one is particularly important. When Ixtoc blew out in 1979, it took 10 months for the well to be capped. Petroleum was on the beaches of Mexico and Texas for years afterwards. Pemex, the Mexican oil company that operated the rig, spent $100 million dollars on cleanup, but refused to pay compensation for damages, citing sovereign immunity. Thousands of Kemp's Ridley sea turtles (an endangered species) were airlifted from their nesting grounds in endangered beaches to safer areas of the Gulf. Ironically, over 150 Kemp's Ridley turtles have been found dead in the aftermath of Deepwater Horizon, and there is no reason to believe that the carnage will stop there.

Even if you do not count the many other "lesser" incidents that have occurred in the Gulf over the past decades, these incidents were all disastrous for the Gulf in their own way, and they are all currently being dwarfed by Deepwater Horizon. But assuming that Beck's percentage were true (which it is not), the fact does not mitigate the impact that these spills have had on the environment. Arguing that offshore drilling is safe despite this (these) spill(s) is like arguing that George W. Bush kept us safe from terrorism, except for 9/11, and the anthrax killer, and numerous IEDs ignited in Iraq and Afghanistan, and...

In conclusion, Beck is absolutely wrong about the spill and oil rig safety. As he continues to spout misinformation, propaganda, and conspiracy theories, he will continue to shed viewers and listeners. It may even end up that his proposed rally on the Washington Mall (on the anniversary of MLK's "I Have A Dream" speech) attracts fewer attendees than his recent movie event "The Christmas Sweater". Of course, it will be the fault of President Obama's Chicago mob, combined with the Communists, the Fascists, labor unions, Woodrow Wilson, ACORN, Media Matters, Stephanie Miller, Hal Sparks, Ryan Seacrest, the makers of dry-erase boards...

NOTE: While preparing this blog entry, I encountered a BSOD. I won't say it's anything but coincidence, but...

Morning, comrades.

Tornadoes forecast for around these parts this afternoon. Ending up over the rainbow would be good, but the way things are going, I'll probably get a two-by-four through a window, then the vortex will strip the meat from my bones before depositing me in the pond down back.

Say, if Mia Hamm had married the Earl of Sandwich instead of Nomaaaaaah, would she be "Mia Hamm-Sandwich"?

This is how I see a progression of events in this case -

Ask nice for them to stop.

IF they don't stop give dirty looks.

If they still don't stop - kick back

Well, my ride can be repaired. Cheaper than buying a new one, I suppose...but not by much.

Going to have to raid the IRAs for this one; not enough credit left.

I feel your pain - I just spent 1200 to get my brakes fixed and by 4 new tires last weekend.

This is all still to fix what NTB did 2 years ago when they took me for 1400 and still didnt' fix the problem.

Good morning, bloggers!

Clinster, thanks for an excellent blog on the Man Who Would Be God (the Rudyard Kipling reference is particular appropriate to Beck, defender of corporate empire.) I guess that there are not enough problems in the world, so Beck has to invent demons to keep us distracted.

I went to a job search related seminar last night, and we were evacuated to a hallway for a tornado warning when the sirens went off. Fortunately, everyone was fine and I made a few good contacts. Now to transfer all this into meaningful work, a place of my own, and a semi-normal life.

Raine, hang in there. You are in my thoughts and in my prayers today, as are Fran and Monty.

I suppose the hell of it all is it may have been preventable. I've deferred an awful lot of maintenence because I couldn't afford it; I've been fixing things as they broke. (Witness tires and brakes last year.) Although I *did* have the timing belt inspected this spring, and it was pronounced OK. That wasn't even the one that broke.

I could not have changed seats as the train was packed with an earlier cancelled train from baltinore. Wow those people were just incredibly self centered.

Tri, I am glad you can get the car fixed.

And the train is leaving the station!!

Here's something interesting.

This is exactly what happened to mine.

Different model, but probably the same engine.

And my mechanic says he's "heard about this", but apparently there aren't enough cases to warrant a recall.

Words of wisdom: If the brake place tells you you need new calipers, tell them you'll get a second opinion. You almost never do; it's a ripoff. They'll say they won't guarantee the work if you don't do it, but what they are trying to do is restore your brakes to brand new car condition. That's unnecessary.

Usually you just need pads, and maybe the rotors turned. If the rotors are badly warped (resulting in pulsing while braking), then they might need to be replaced.

I will never go to Brake-O again.

Good day everyone. Good thing central air is on since it's 92 degrees already and I never would have been able to sleep.

Comment by BobR on 06/24/2010 16:16:02
btw Clinster - regarding today's blog: Beck saying "only 1" disaster in the Gulf is also like saying we "only dropped 2 bombs on Japan" at the end of WWII.

Av-dorkiness for the day...

First Flight for the Fokker Eindecker....that pioneered the interruptor gear that allowed MGs to be fired through the propellor arc. (circa wwI)

Two significant crashes occured on this day..

EA flight 166 at JFK in 1975...in a wind-shear. This led to the development of doppler radar that we all take for granted today.

The infamous B-52 incident at Fairchild AFB in '94. (You'll recognize it if you see the picture.)

And it's Elison Onazuka's birthday today.

My wife waits for me after work at Panera Bread in Watertown so she can surf while I'm on my way. Today I stayed inside and had a salad while it poured outside. The Masspike and 128 had large standing puddles of water on them.

Here at Chez Rabbit....just barely wet. Good for the kitties I suppose.

My kittie was outside in the rain. Tried to call her in, but she went and hid.

I was more worried about the kitties being scared by the thunder. They never go outside. They've learned that Outside = Vet.
