Pale In Comparison
Author: BobR    Date: 11/24/2010 04:22:46

There was a time in the not-so-distant past when being a national politician carried a certain amount of dignity. Sure the "sleazy politician" is a stereotype, and somewhat well-deserved, but that generally revolved around the job itself. Politicians were celebrities for their political actions, and when their personal behavior raised eyebrows, they were often shamed out of office. These days it seems that the cult of celebrity is not only tolerated, it is used as a PR tool to enhance a candidate's profile.

Nowhere is this more evident than with Sarah Palin. The one-time part-time governor of Alaska had her own little fiefdom in Alaska until an operative in the Republican party tagged her to be John McCain's running mate. Before you could say "expense account", she was posing, spewing soundbites, and shopping for clothes. Since the 2008 election, she resigned as governor and played a game of "will she or won't she?" with the press over the 2012 elections, like some sort of political strip tease. She's been a FAUX News commentator and reality show "star". How does any of that make her electable? I just don't get it - you'll have to ask her fans.

I use the word "fans" for a reason - it comes back to the cult of celebrity. Voters are so jaded, lazy, self-centered, and incurious that they'll vote for their representative in government as if s/he were a competitor on "Dancing With The Stars". Past political history? Leadership? Intelligence?... That last one is a liability for a lot of voters - "someone they could have a beer with" seems to carry more weight.

DWTS does seem to be some sort of crucible for the Palins and their cult. It's well-known that her daughter Bristol has been on the show. Despite her mediocre performances, she keeps getting voted to stay on the show. Is it because of her talent? Of course not; like it's older cousin American Idol, it's the American public that decides who stays and who goes. In short - it's a popularity contest, not a talent contest. And as we've seen, the Palins are long on popularity and short on talent. One talent they DO possess is to get their loyal fans to participate, whether "Operation Bristol" is an official organized operation or not.

Sarah Palin is trying to keep herself in the water cooler discussions for another season by pushing to get Christine O'Donnell (whom she campaigned for) on the show as a competitor. It's doubtful that will happen, but it is very telling about Palin herself. She likes to use surrogates that will indirectly reflect on her without her having to take the risk. This is why she only appears on FAUX News to answer questions directly. As a response to a question about being interviewed, she responded that she wants to "clean up journalism", positioning herself as an expert because she went to 5 colleges college for journalism. Does she suppose Katie Couric or any other journalists didn't? Will she grant that same assumed expertise to President Obama (re: government) because he was a Constitutional scholar? I think not.

One has to wonder what her next move will be. Her daughter Willow appears to be tainted goods because of her anti-gay slurs and allegations of vandalism. Perhaps her son Track? He's in the military, so that will look good when he gets out. Nothing like a proud mother posing with her "hero" son. Daughter Piper is way too young to be of much good to her ambitions.

Which begs the question: what exactly does she really want? Is it power?... money?... celebrity? Some combination thereof? Which one is simply a means to which other's end? Whatever it is, despite the wishes of Barbara Bush, there's no keeping her down on the tundra when she's seen the glitz of national TV.

That's a shame - because she has none.

Hi, everyone! I hope that all the bloggers here and those dear to them are doing well. Happy Thanksgiving!!!

To my surprise, I am off today and will be heading out in an hour or so to run my errands before the holiday. I will be visiting my sister in the city.

Remember, it is okay on Thanksgiving to tell people to get stuffed.

Regardless of what we feel about President Obama, I think that a case can be made that the only significant social and political change comes not from politicians but from the grass roots applying pressure for change. We saw this with abolition, woman's suffrage, the labor movement, the Populist movement, the Progressive Movement, the New Deal, Civil Rights, and in so many other movements that changed America and the world for the better.

Robert Kuttner, co-founder and co-editor of the American Prospect, has an interesting article called "Saving Progressivism from Obama" in the Huffington Post. In it, he argues that it is up to us to create a movement for progressive change and hope that politicians will join the bandwagon. (I will generally count on politicians to join movements, if for no other reasons than keeping their jobs or getting into office as well as saving their hides.)

Here is an excerpt:
Saving Progressivism From Obama

My audacious hope is that progressives can move from disillusion to action and offer the kind of political movement and counter-narrative that the President should have been leading.

I doubt that it makes sense to run a left candidate against Obama in 2012. The history of these efforts is one of failure that only weakened the Democratic nominee, whether we recall Ted Kennedy's doomed primary challenge to incumbent Jimmy Carter in 1980, or Ralph Nader's run in 2000.

The closest that the progressive movement came to realizing this strategy was of course in 1968, when Lyndon Johnson decided to abdicate in the face of mass protest. But in that tumultuous year, we had a surfeit of anti-war candidates and a real movement. Even so, we ended up with Richard Nixon. This year, it is hard to think of a plausible candidate (Howard Dean? Russ Feingold?) who could unseat Obama without further weakening the Democrats in the general election.

So our task is to step into the leadership vacuum that Obama has left, and fashion a compelling narrative about who and what are destroying America. Our movement needs the passion and single mindedness of the Tea Party movement, and it helps that we have reality on our side. If we do our jobs, we can move public opinion, discredit the right, and elect progressives to office. Even Barack Obama might embrace us, if only as a last resort.

Greetings, comrades!

Planning tomorrow morning's kitchen assault with military precision....for whatever reason, I'm at the store tonight until 11. I don't imagine it will be that busy or messy that we'll need to be there to the bitter end.

see now I never learned to like saurkraut - in fact unless its pastry, I don't like much of the food of my ancestors, well the German ones that is. Anyone know what food they had in Bohemia? not joking that's the country that's listed in some of the family records

The last caller on the show made a really valid point (that Raine has made to me privately before) - use dogs to sniff for explosives. That will be more accurate (and WAY cheaper) than anything else.

Retrieving them from shelters is a bonus.

It's a little sad that Steph poo-pooed it

Considering that Bohemia was part of the Czech republic, you might look into Czech cuisine

Wouldn't be so sure about the dogs...yesterday a couple 'pointed' on some random suitcase that was headed to Nigeria (at KBOS). The Delta freight terminal was evacuated and everything inside re-searched. Eventually, they discovered that it was nothing more than ordinary linens.

Don't know what the dogs picked up, and fortunately it didn't affect the passenger terminal, but the point should be that nothing is foolproof.

But having seen many, many, many dog demonstrations....if professionally handled, dogs are a great icebreaker and kid-friendly. That would go a long way towards making the security theater easier.

Mornin' all & Happy Fri...err.. yeah whatever.

So yeah the pie recipe said to cook it 50-55 minutes. When I checked it at 45 minutes, the top of the pie was COMPLETELY BURNT.

I is not a happy camper.

seriously though I work with someone who's husband now manages on the programs using dogs with the TSA and homeland security - those animals are amazing and incredibly trained

National Opt-Out day is looking like a fizzle. At least locally.

I must disagree with you, dear Raine. "Gate Rape" is an altogether and fitting name for what we're being subjected to. It should make people feel uncomfortable and uneasy to call it that. Maybe it will lead to change.

I understand your reasoning for opposing it, however.

(and in a side note, perhaps our side has got one right in the "naming wars". See also gay/same-sex marriage and global warming/climate change. "Porno Scanner" is a stroke of genius, IMHO.)

Hi folks.

Finally awake. There was a bit of madness last night because one of the HD encoders melted down during the Knicks game so the audio on the HD feed wasn't leaving the building for most of the second half.

And I slept through Momma running the show into the ditch.

Ok, I gotta say this, and I say it with love.

Rape is an act of violence. This is not and act of violence.

This is invasive, wrong and even humiliating -- It's an invasion of our civil liberties and I can and have even madee the argument that it is unconstitutional -- but it is not rape. Ask anyone who has the unfortunate experience to have been raped.

It is not gate rape. Using that term desensitizes the term 'rape' and it's victims for political purposes. Using what Rape victims have gone thru to make people who have not in order to make them feel discomfort is a terrible strawman.

Rape victims didn't get to choose, unlike those that are flying.
Rape victims weren't warned of what they were to endure.
Rape victims have a lot more to worry about than personal privacy being violated.
Rape Victims have to worry about being diseased.
Rape Victims have to worry about pregnancy.
Rape victims are subjected to phycological and physical violence.
Rape victims are deeply scarred emotionally and in many cases it takes years to rebuild that trust if ever at all.

I can go on, but I really feel very strongly about this -- calling it Rape-gate is not cool.

This TSA issue is bad enough -- it is terrible -- but it is not akin to being raped. Trust me on this one, it isn't.

Well, once again an opportunity is missed to get a name right from the start.

I will, however, as gently and tactfully as I possibly can, note that your outrage is exactly the kind of passion that is needed to get the policy changed. Using such an inflammatory term for it may be wrong, but that's what will get noticed. Alas.

I'll grab the stick and zoom us up to 10,000 feet for a second....if the Tea Party can make stuff up and get enough backing to take back the House of Reps, what is it about our side that when we have truth and outrage together, we can't do a damn thing with it?

But I digress.
