Black Friday
Author: BobR    Date: 11/26/2010 14:00:27

Today is Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving when retailers finally get their balance sheets out of the red and into the black. As the years have gone by, the big-box retailers have pushed the envelope further and further, and the crass commercialization of Christmas has become harder and harder to stomach. Last year and especially 2008 were hard on businesses because people were losing jobs, money was tight, and everyone was scared to spend money. This did not help the economy improve. Things, however look better this year.

According to Bloomberg, consumer AND business spending rose in October. This is good, because job creation requires people and businesses to buy products and services. Increased spending means increased demand which means increased job opportunities. In turn, when those people are hired, they spend, and the cycle keeps moving towards a stronger economy and lower unemployment.

Record quarterly corporate profits are also a sign the economy is improving, although the money doesn't seemt to be "trickling down" in the form of higher pay for the average worker or new jobs. Why? Because all those profits are staying at the top of the executive ladder, and being realized by those with the means to invest in the stock market. That makes taking part in the profit party increasingly difficult for the average person in the middle class.

But there are some bright spots for middle-income America. Small business growth is improving as well, which means that small business owners are making money, and that means jobs. Small businesses also have another advantage over large corporations - their profits stay in the community (or state), where they contribute to the local economy. Check out this chart here. It shows that $73 of every $100 spent at a local business stays in the community, while only $43 of every $100 stays when spent on a non-local alternative (ie: big box stores).

So what should the consumer do? In response to Black Friday, there is a movement (supported - oddly - by American Express) to get consumers to embrace Small Business Saturday. Instead of sending your spending dollars to a corporate office in another state, buy products from locally owned businesses. It will help your neighbor, and it's a lot less stressful than dealing with the thundering herds at Wal-Mart. You may end up spending more money (or having to buy less), but you'll feel better about it, knowing that it will make your town a better place to live. At least you don't have to get to the store at 3:00 AM to make sure you get one of the 10 teaser items advertised before they run out 5 minutes after opening.

Of course - you can extend this idea to year-round. Buy vegetables from local farmers at a farmer's market (or ask your grocer if they buy locally). Go to a local hardware store instead of Home Depot (I LOVE ours). Eat at a Mom & Pop restaurant instead of Olive Garden. Bank at a credit union. Shop for clothes at consignment shops, or other boutiques. Sure there are times when it's just not possible, but trying to support local businesses is always the right thing to do when you can do it.

I will not be participating in the consumer feeding frenzy today. Tomorrow, I will support a local business. I hope you will too.

Well, I don't normally listen when Hal is on...but seeing that this is the first time in almost 2 years that I have been able to connect to the ol' StephStream at work, I'm in for a while today.

HE's not too bad, I gotta say.

So you are working today?

I'm at the day job....just started, new guy, etc. That's the insurance industry...people were in the ER yesterday, the bills need to get out.

I am NOT at the store tonight, though. Friday night is blocked out for my Scout meeting, so I won't be braving the black friday crowds. I will be out and about this evening, though. It's the tree-lighting ceremony on Waltham City Hall Plaza tonight, and my Pack has led the city in the Pledge of Allegiance the last few years.

And, a shopping tip from someone in retail: I personally have no control over what the warehouse sends to our store. No matter how badly you personally want an item, I can't conjure it up out of thin air if it's not in the building, OK?

I made a short appearance over at the HalStream but the chatroom was just too busy.

The wife is working over at Lego today (4AM to 4PM) and it will likely be nuts, but she likes working with the kids & stuff. So I stay home and try to bond more with the kitties, but they're more interested in sleeping. Fine, that's probably their normal daytime mode anyway.

We were awakened this morning by crashing noises in the bedroom, the sound of paws moving very fast and lots of hissing and snarling. Lucky was still on the bed, dead to the world. So I suspect Sophie came out of her room to look around and Cleo chased her. Oh well.

File under "Ah-DOY!!"

WASHINGTON: Sarah Palin is drawing criticism from around the world after declaring that the United States has to stand with "our North Korean allies."

Palin's gaffe, made Wednesday during an interview on Glenn Beck's syndicated radio show, was quickly corrected by her host. But it drew immediate fire from liberal bloggers, who cited it as an example of the 2008 vice presidential candidate's lack of foreign policy expertise.

Newspapers in Asia and Europe are repeating the criticism. The Times of India says Palin "did it again," while London's Daily Mail says she "may want to brush up on her geography."

The conservative U.S. website The Weekly Standard came to Palin's defense, pointing out that "she correctly identified North Korea as our enemy literally eight seconds before the mix-up."

"Hello, I am having difficulty walking upright and using my opposable thumb today."

Good morning everyone. I'm spending the holiday weekend working 13-hour shifts at the salt mine both today and tomorrow. considering MSG has live games in the afternoon and evening on both days. At least today I have doubletime plus holiday pay since I need lots of money after all this car crap and I still have to get a new battery.

So, if you look at my FB page from yesterday, one of the photos is of young Javi and a couple of his distant cousins.

The elder of the hellions was just diagnosed with Scarlet Fever. (She spiked a temp during the course of the afternoon yesterday.)

We're all gonna die.

Sophie has ventured into the living room. She's now perched under our cat "tree". Lucky is sleeping nearby, oblivious to everything. Cleo is sleeping in the bedroom and obviously doesn't know what's going on, or she'd be out here now.

In early today....heading home early.

Fortunately, the rain has stopped and the sun is peeking out; we're headed to City Hall Plaza later this evening for our tree-lighting ceremony. I sure hope the Republicans make everything better so we can light up the entire common again. One tree under the gazebo just doesn't cut it. (last year.)
