Cleaning out the drawer of the blog mind...
Author: TriSec    Date: 02/26/2011 14:26:31

Good Morning!

I've got a couple of snippets of ideas today, not really enough to make a blog out of, but stitched together they will bulk out the morning. Of course, I offer the usual apologies to Bob Ryan....from whom I shamelessly steal this theme from time to time.

We'll start today in the religious realm. Some of you may have been privvy to a brief conversation Raine and I had via blog about the Unitarian Church. Ever since becoming a "recovering Catholic" in the wake of the child abuse scandal, I've been a bit rudderless in that regard. Bouncing around from church to church, never really feeling at home at any one. I've been long fascinated with the world of Islam, and have been studying it (and even making feeble attempts at morning prayer) without actually taking the leap. But one thing I have always listened to since my earliest iPod days is the Daily Encouragement Podcast, posted every weekday morning by a modern couple living in Amish territory.

They try their hardest to interpret the Christian Bible for today's world...and very rarely do they let politics or current events affect what they have to teach. But this past week was one of those times. It was an offhanded remark about the pirates that killed those American missionaries this week..."no doubt, peace-loving Muslims".

That's an awfully broad brush. I have traded emails with the minister before, mostly on spiritual matters, and I almost sent him a screed about his categorization, but I didn't. But it sure rubbed me the wrong way this week. *grumbles*

* * *

But speaking of Muslims, don't ya know there's a war on? Another of my many podcasts that I pick up is the "Old Time Superman Radio" podcast via Laser & Sword Magazine. (Curiously, this is also run by a raging right-wing tool out of Idaho. We've traded emails there, too...but only about Superman.) In any case, ol' Superman is busy saving the world in 1942 from Germany and Japan. But that's not the issue I want to look at today. How many of you have dusty and forgotten savings bonds in a drawer someplace?

During WWII, a titanic effort was made to push War Bonds. Of course, it was for all the right reasons....patriotism, helping the soldiers, paying for war material, and something more nebulous, that feeling that we were "all in this together" somehow. My said Superman podcast is bookended by War Bond ads aimed at the children audience...they could by a war stamp for just 10 cents, which meant 5 50-caliber bullets, or enough fuel oil to carry a destroyer one full mile closer to it's objective.

In any case, seeing how far in debt we are now, and how sorry the economy is...imagine if we financed our current wars through a war bond program starting in 2002? The budget gap might be smaller, and when the economy sank two years ago, all we needed to do would have been to liquidate all those war bonds and presto, cash in hand to foster spending and jump-start the economy. Of course, like everything else it could be done today, but there's no political cojones on either side to do such a thing.

* * *

Finally this morning, not really a blog idea, but more of an observation. We've just had this awesome event in Christchurch, New Zealand. (used in the traditional definition.) The devastation and human losses are incredible, but it's got a sad air of familiarity about it. Just a hair over a year ago, we stared dumbly at the TV, but the images were from Port-au-Prince.

Remember what we said we were going to do then? Even though the US has not volunteered any aid or resources to Christchurch beyond rescue teams at this point, we should all remember this day and look back to New Zealand in a year's time.

New Zealand is white, prosperous and english-speaking.

Haiti is poor, black, and has a variety of tongues.

Who do you think is going to be in better shape in a year? (2 years for Haiti.)

Regarding the earthquakes, I will have to sadly agree to the tacit observation that Haiti will remain unchanged, and New Zealand will be well on the way to recovery.

As to the war bond, I'm not sure how that helps. Isn't that essentially deficit spending, except that the bond holders are ostensibly American?

Especially when you consider that area in New Zealand already had a 7.2 quake last year.

When you read magazines of the WWII period there are also mentions of scrap iron drives, tin can drives, paper drives, fuel rationing coupons, not to mention shortages of just about everything electronic - all for the war effort. What do you think would happen if Gung Ho Joe and Jane Teabagger were asked to give up their old pots & pans or maybe drive a few MPH slower or a bit less, or ask that little Scott and Sarah Teabagger not get the latest toy because we needed to fight those Muslins?

Just remember how many old Warner Brothers cartoons made references to the war effort and rationing as well. There were a lot of jokes about not being able to get meat because you didn't have the right card or it was a rationing day.

there is sadness in the Hudson Valley and amongst my family and friends today.

He is no longer presumed, and has officially been identified.

Dr. Firaldi was a family friend. He was my grandmother's podiatrist and (tho not at the same time) employed both of my sisters. My sister-love is his current office manager. Dr. Firaldi leaves behind a wife and two beautiful daughters.

The Puoghkeepsie Journal reports:
38-year-old Michael Faraldi of Germantown -- was the only person aboard the jet, which crashed into the ice in the Hudson River just north of the Kingston Rhinecliff Bridge and is partially submerged.

Faraldi's body has not yet been recovered as 20 divers were working at the scene. Faraldi took off from Nashville, Tenn., in a 1969 VAC Strikemaster jet.

The cause of the crash is unknown, but it appears to be accidental, according to officials.

A state police helicopter flying over the partially frozen river saw "no signs of life" at the crash scene, according to Sgt. Robert Warner of the state police in Millbrook. Capt. Patrick Regan, who is at Charles Rider Park in the Town of Ulster, on the river's western shore, said it appears that the pilot has died.

State police divers a few minutes ago were getting ready to board an airboat and preparing to cut through the ice, which is a foot thick, with chainsaws.
I am so, so very sad.

Right now it is a wait and see. I don;t think they recovered the body, yet. I may go up once we know more details. They are going to a friends house tonite.

It's just shocking. A day filled with so much joy, fighting for women's rights, fighting for workers rights and for freedom in the Middle east...

I just couldn't keep dumping this all on Bobber. I could not say anything until his name was released, and he was officially confirmed ....

That's totally understandable

Everytime I've lost someone I've always wanted to share something about them, its normal

Shoulders always there for friends to lean on

Oh, dear. I saw the crawl on NECN earlier this evening. Honestly, I don't even know where that is, but I'll be sure to check now.

Small world.

He was the only damn deadhead I knew that was a conservative. OH --- how I loved sparring with him. Back in the darker days, when I was working at the X-tra mart, he'd come in a few times a week. He would joke about my sister (the one who worked for him at the time -- my second sister is working for his practice now) , and try to stir me up over politics. He was always gracious. He was a guy that we wanted conservatives to be... (I hope that makes sense)

He was a deadhead -- I used to tell him you can't be a deadhead and a conservative all your life, you gotta make a choice eventually. Somewhere around here I have a CD he gave me of some show in the 80's.

It's just sad. He was a doctor, he helped people. He's gone. 2 little girls lost a daddy. It's amazing how you think about these things when it cuts so close to home.

I've been waiting for you, Tri. I Kinda thought you had heard about this one. The Airport he was going to land in is across the river from the Aerodrome in Rhinebeck. I suspect you may have heard about his plane. It was used in a few air-shows.

Just too damn close to home.

I'll be posting my pictures from the Pro choice rally tomorrow, We went to the rally in DC for the unions, and then ended up at the WH for the middle east solidarity rally. I must admit, I wasn't really in the picture taking mode by then.

Either way, I loved that I was there! I LOVE LOVE LOVE living here.

For tonight, they have called off the search for his body. They still have not found the cockpit.

My sisters (both of them) will be going into the office tomorrow to begin to make the phone calls to his patients.

I know this is selfish, But hearing the pain and sadness my sister's voices is the just so hard. I honestly want to soak it up for them. I know I can't.

its not selfish, its being a good sister and friend and a support system that they need
