Report from an Edwards Rally
Author: BobR    Date: 01/30/2008 13:15:42

From Guest Blogger (and 4F member) Faye (m-hadley):
======================================
This morning I got up, checked my e-mail over my morning coffee, posted an entry to my blog that I had written the night before (see the following critique of Bush's last SOTU address), and headed out the door to a rally being held in North Tulsa at the Transportation Workers Union Local #514 Hall. The rally was being held for John Edwards. I realize that I may be perceived to be somewhat of a flip-flopper on my presidential choice for 2008. As I have explained to anybody who will listen, I know myself too well, and I know that once I choose a candidate, it will be very hard for me to switch my allegiance to another candidate come Convention time in Denver. So although I have posted entries on my blog that suggest that I am supporting Barack Obama (and I am impressed with his eloquent style, his vision of hope and unity, and his ability to inspire us to be our very best selves), and I have been vocal about my misgivings about Hillary Clinton, I am also a realist, and I know that whoever gets the nod in July from the Democratic Party is the candidate I will support in November. I have survived the ravages of a senseless, remorseless, ugly, and fear-based republican administration, and I will not in good conscience support any candidate that even hints at continuing any of Bush/Cheney's horrendous policies. So I went to hear Senator Edwards this morning, in large part to thank him for taking the time to stop and visit with a group of supporters here in Tulsa, Oklahoma (admittedly not the center of anyone's political universe), and once again and in person to applaud John Edwards' consistent message that this country has a huge problem, and at the root of the problem is a growing chasm between the ultra-rich and the very poor. John Edwards' "two Americas" theme is one that he has been espousing for many years, and it rings even truer today than it did when he first pointed it out to those of us whose situations are more comfortable than many other people's lives.

I was proud to be standing in the Tulsa Union Hall holding up a John Edwards for President sign, and I was prouder still that fellow Tulsans reserved their loudest applause and their longest standing ovation for Edwards' remarks about his plan to get the U.S. out of Iraq. It may be the "economy stupid," but here in the heartland of America, it is not completely lost on Okies that the economy here is inexorably tied to an ongoing and indefensible occupation halfway around the world. As I stepped out of the Hall after shaking Edwards' hand (twice), I was met with a very strong wind (40 mph, I later learned), and I thought that this breeze will blow clean across this country and sweep away the garbage that has piled up over the last seven years. It will sweep into power a new and better adminstration and things will change.

I just want to say to all of my friends and acquaintances who are so worried that the fight between Billary and Barack is going to tear the Democratic party apart - relax, we're Democrats, we pick and poke, but in the end we're not going to allow a republican, no matter how wealthy or devious he may be, claim the (White) House that will be ours in November. Viva la revolucion! Si se puede! Yes we can, and we will. Can't you just taste the change in the air?

Here's a link to the Fresno Bee's endorsement of John Edwards.

Faye, dunno if you noticed (and good morning btw! ) but over by the *actions* Portion (upper left corner) you should have a link now that says *can Create Blog* entries. I meant to tell you that last night, but I got in pretty late myself.

The first box is for the blog itself, and the second is for a quick summary that auto uploads When one of us does the *digg* on the website.

I was thinking about copying your entry for Bob anyway, but I wanted to make sure it was alright with you!

on the CNN website:

An Edwards aide said that he does not plan to endorse either Clinton or Obama, at this time, but he may do so in the future.

Another Edwards aide said he is not dropping out of the race due to his wife's health. Elizabeth Edwards announced last year that her breast cancer had returned.

FRom the latest Blog entry , posted at 2 am this morning: WASHINGTON - Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards postponed campaign events in Alabama and North Dakota to make a major policy address on poverty Wednesday in New Orleans, where he launched his presidential bid 13 months ago.

Campaign officials said Edwards wants to highlight the fact that President Bush did not focus on New Orleans, still reeling from Hurricane Katrina, during his State of the Union address. North Dakota and Alabama are scheduled to vote Feb. 5.

In a news release, the Edwards campaign called poverty "the great moral issue of our time." In recent days, it said, "national discussion of important issues like ending poverty has given way to sniping and personal attacks between the two front-runner candidates. Ending poverty and fighting for the middle class is the cause of John Edwards' life -- and he will urge the nation to refocus on this important issue."

Mudcat Saunders, who was campaigning for Edwards in rural Georgia, a Feb. 5 state, said Edwards wanted to refocus his campaign on poverty.

Advisers said Edwards was continuing his campaign to the 22 states holding nominating contests on Feb. 5, despite losses in the first four contests, in hopes of picking up more delegates. On Saturday, he finished a distant third in his native South Carolina, whose primary he won in 2004.

Some people close to the campaign said Edwards also was disappointed that poverty got little mention in Democratic reactions to President Bush's address, and he sees the New Orleans speech as a chance to refocus attention on the problem.

The insiders said Edwards continues to raise money at a respectable pace, although not at the level of rivals Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.

The Edwards campaign said he will attend Thursday's Democratic debate in Los Angeles. After speaking in New Orleans on Wednesday, the news release said, Edwards "will volunteer on the Habitat for Humanity project at the Musicians' Village" and then fly to Atlanta to address a Georgia Democratic Party dinner.

Georgia also votes on Feb. 5.

Edwards campaigned Tuesday in Jefferson City, Mo. He told a small crowd that he wants universal health care, a quick end to the Iraq war and economic policies geared toward helping the working and middle classes.

After all the talk from so many real progressives arounf this country, after all the talk of wanting real change, after all that talk... we have 2 condidates, that are status quo.

Nothing seems to be changing in this country. Nothing. People SAY they want change, they pay it lip service, and look at what we get.

I am just depressed this morning. Very depressed. I feel like someone kicked me in the stomach. OVer on the website, everyone is shocked. EVERYONE.

HE did not run out of money. The campaign ahas been getting a lot of money ... 4.8 million dollars last week alone.

Well, it'll be interesting to see who is still on the ballot in this Commonwealth.

Despite our endorsement, I've been hedging my bets. I don't know if Bill Richardson will still be listed, but I'd imagine it's too late to reprint ballots without John's name.

I had a thought about crossing the lines and voting for McCain so Romney would lose, but a recent poll shows him far and away leading this state.

So now I'm down to Edwards or a blank ballot.

And Star...don't not vote. Go. Turn in a blank if you have to, but make the effort!

I won't vote for Hilary; I just can't do it. And Obama leaves me feeling...vague.

Comment by Raine on 01/30/2008 15:09:26
The Atlanta Campaign office just called me back, and confirmed the news. The have recieved no other news, and are saying that this was a press leak.

She also asked me to pass this on to everyone... She said thank you for our support, and that we should be proud that it was John who has driven the debate and the issues that are now finally being discussed in this campaign. we All can be proud of that.

I broke down crying with her on the phone...

Comment by livingonli on 01/30/2008 15:09:59
Good morning all.

Maybe I'll vote for Gravel now.

Oh, poop.

I'll probably vote for Obama just because it's not Shillary although she will definitely take New York.

Morning!

Heard the best story this morning, one of the local stations had Grace Slick on, they were asking her all sorts of questions about her life and rumors from back in the day and they asked her about going to college with Patrica Nixon.

She said they didn't actually go to college at the same time but they both attended Finch and graduated from there. Anyway, Patrica was having a tea at the White House for all the graduates and sent an invite to Grace, under her maiden name. Grace called Abbie Hoffman and told him they were going to the White House. They got to the gates and security stopped them saying she was a security risk even if she had an invite. Grace said security was right to stop them even if they didn't really know why cause she had a pocket full of acid that she was planning to drop on Nixon.

It looses something in the retelling but to hear her tell it, it's hysterical.

The problem is the establishment of the party itself is controlled by the money machine which doesn't want someone to really upset the system. This is the problem when so many of us voted Democratic in '06 hoping that something would be done about the criminal behavior of the Bush Administration and they folded like a road map.

Raine & others,

I am confused and bummed out this morning too. After yesterday's rally, listening to John, cheering him on, and being so very inspired by him, it seems so wrong that he is leaving the race. I feel like crawling in a hole, but I'm scheduled to go intoINDN's List office, so that I can learn how to maintain their contributors files. So I guess we must go on...

Probably because we were. They wanted the candidates with the most money and the safest positions. They weeded out anyone who was considered "too left" by ignoring Gravel, excluding Kucinich and now discounting Edwards. Unless there is a change in the media and an end to the endless barrage of propaganda we are screwed. No wonder why I end up watching the international news services and only watching Olbermann of anything on the main news channels.

The current Tory Government hasn't been too receptive to American war resisters compared to the way they were during Vietnam. They stopped Code Pink activists from crossing the border and are denying refugee status to deserters from the military although there is a movement within Canada trying to get the Government to allow them to stay.

I'm living in boxworld right now........

Still sleeping on a futon - which frankly is more comfortable than my mattress and I'm seriously considering just chucking the mattress and box spring until I can get a new set.

No TV yet - I have a feeling the reception is going to be less than watchable. A friend recommended going with satellite - apparently one of them might have a deal for about $25 a month that includes local channels, two news channels (can we say MSNBC?) and one sports channel (wish I could exchange it for either Animal Planet for my Mom or Comedy Central).

Just got phones and DSL about an hour ago.

Need to get *something* to give me privacy but also sunlight. I'm on the first floor and all the front windows point straight to the street. I've lived in the 'burbs for so long I'm not quite used to the foot traffic anymore.

And I've got a list of repairs about a mile long for the landlord, but his handyman is out in San Diego helping his daughter set up her new home. One thing I'd *really* like is a thermostat that at least tells me what the indoor temperature is......

Good morning, bloggers!! (Okay, still morning in Chicago - I have been ill.)

I try to avoid double posting, but I wrote something over at UNN that expresses my feelings about the news on Edwards. I have not picked a candidate in the primary, because being stuck in Northwest Indiana, I get to vote in May. However, I would urge Edwards supporters and Kucinich supporters to not abandon hope. If we want change, then it is up to us to be the heralds of change.

BREAKING NEWS!!: Edwards drops out!

[quote="SensiScholar"]Under this scenario wouldn't an Obama/Edwards ticket look nice?

I'm guessing we're all clear on what we need to do - defeat the Shill!

Yes, an Obama/Edwards ticket would look nice. Obama would benefit from Edwards in many ways, and this would be a charismatic ticket as opposed to what we will likely see on the Republican side. (McCain and Romney are not likely to inspire many people.)

I think that an Obama/Edwards ticket could have coat tails and may help to swing new members into Congress - something we desperately need. By contrast, I think a Clinton ticket would have anchors instead of coat tails, dragging down candidates for Congress.) An Obama/Edwards ticket could bring in independents and new voters, many of whom feel disenfranchised.

I realize it is easy to say that there is no hope, but I have learned that sometimes you have to convince yourself to have hope. (Sometimes, this has worked. I think my Dad puzzled his doctors by living as long as he did.) So, I think that of the two Democratic candidates left in the race, Obama is the one who is more likely to respond to progressive voices. (Other candidates have responded to progressive voices in office such as FDR, whose 1932 platform was not as progressive as the New Deal became, or LBJ, who listened to Martin Luther King, Jr. - how I wish he was still among us - and pushed forward civil rights legislation although he knew the Democratic Party would lose the South.)

Yes, it is possible that Bush may cancel the elections. Or that an asteroid may hit and plunge the world into a new Ice Age. However, I think we can try to campaign for the more progressive of the two remaining candidates now and in November, helping shape the debate and the issues. I fear that Hillary Clinton will give progressives no seat at the table (well, maybe a baby chair) and I know that the GOP would lock us out of the room. I realize that I have no authority to speak for millions of Americans, but at the risk of sounding arrogant, I think that there are many who say that we are ready to take the rights that have been stolen and to bring this country to a better future. As my sig says, quoting a great sage who lived some two thousand years ago, "If I am not for myself, who will be? If I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?" In the end, it is up to us - to at least make our voices heard. If we fall silent out of fear, are we not guilty of doing what we criticize others for - retreating into our own lives and declaring ourselves powerless before a political machine that would rend the Constitution and declare meaningless the sacrifices that countless generations of men and women have given on behalf of our nation and the principles that we have proclaimed as our highest values? I choose not to be silent. I choose not to be afraid - even if reason can find arguments to live in fear.

I can't speak for John Edwards, but I think that he and Elizabeth want us to have hope - not just for the Democratic Party but for America and the world. Indeed, it was an expression of their hope that lead to a campaign that raised many vital issues, and I think that John Edwards will still have a part to play in this election cycle. (If Edwards does not want to be Vice President, imagine what he could do as attorney general in bringing justice to this country.)

So, why despair? Ultimately, a campaign is not about a person but about ideas - and I think Edwards' ideas will be influencing the debate this year.

Mourn as it is fitting and human.

However, you show the wisdom to be ready to make a change. Life is about possibilities and I like to think that while we breathe, we still can make a difference.

On a positive note, think of the good that John Edwards is doing today by having his campaign end along the Gulf Coast - reminding America of its responsibility to our brothers and sisters there. So, I will have to say that John Edwards is leaving the campaign as a class act - putting the issues front and center. He and his supporters should walk with their heads held high even as they seek to find ways to continue to make a difference. Similarly, I think that the campaigns of the two remaining Democratic candidates should treat Edwards and his supporter with great dignity. So, feel sorrow if you must, but also feel pride over what you have done.

Please hear what I said,

I am not leaving!

I’m staying where I’m at, thank-you very much.

And as long as I stand upon her soil,

She will be my land of the free.

As long as I believe what I believe,

You will see the meaning of brave!

I will not under threat of tyranny or mob,

Toss the place that I love in the ashen pile of lost causes,

And walk quietly into a meaningless mist!

No, I will stay, and you will listen.

You will not lecture me about values!

You will not receive the exclusive rights to my morality!

Please hear what I said.

For where ever I stand upon here soil,

I am the deep well of my beloved country’s finest values and highest morals,

Fairness, compassion, wisdom, strength, commonsense, tolerance,

And you shall tremble before them, for they are righteous!

So let the cheers for my demise die this night in a million throats!

Let the gloating turn to great and frightening doubt!

For I am not leaving!

My beloved country needs me now more than ever she has before.

And I pledge my allegiance to that what she still is,

And to that great and shining day that she has yet to live!

Nader, blech! The man did NOT build up a party infrastructure after 2000 and seems to be desperately trying to undermine his own accomplishments. So, I have to ask if we can afford a vanity candidate who seemed to cut into the numbers of Democrats.

Comment by Raine on 01/30/2008 18:22:41
Nader said he filed papers with the Federal Election Commission and launched a Web site after Dennis Kucinich, a liberal Ohio congressman, announced his decision to withdraw from the presidential race last week.

He was set to announce that he had formed an exploratory committee Wednesday, even before former Sen. John Edwards made it known that he'd be ending his candidacy. But with Edwards — who has made economic populism and ending poverty cornerstones of his campaign — leaving the Democratic field, Nader said, he feels his candidacy is more urgent than ever.

BArack said : let me say a few words about another american who has called us to a common purpose. John has spent a life time to give a voice to voiceless and hope to the struggleing... he consistantly made us focus on who matters...

Barack said this during a campaign appearance.

Aww, fuck.

If Nader runs, we may as well all head to Miami and wait for the next boat to Gitmo.

F*ckers.

Please note, this was not live. This was on a TV interview.

F*ckin Nader - he ain't gettin' one thin dime from me.

I was out running errands. I had to go to the post office and drug store so I only caught a little of the speech. Anyone know why he was leaving the race or he didn't say?

Comment by Raine on 01/30/2008 19:29:34
No one seems to understand why today he decided to drop out of the race, he had already made media buys for the next week. I jsutr wish I understood, why today. I could have understood next wednesday, but today, it seems so strange.

LOL! They just showed John after the speech having a martini at a bar...

Good for him. He deserves it.

I saw earlier that he officially entered the race in NOLA a year ago, so perhaps he thought this was the appropriate place (and time) to bring it to an end.

Comment by livingonli on 01/30/2008 19:33:21
Are you guys still going to go to the party affair tonight? I think you should go anyway and push the cause and maybe we can find out what the Democratic insiders are thinking and hope they don't plan to stab us in the back.

If he still gets deleagtes for the nomination, someone is going to have to earn that support.

Just saying.

Commentary From Ted Rall:
John Edwards isn't just the most electable Democrat—he's the best choice. But the media is starving him of the oxygen campaigns require in order to thrive: coverage. Shortly after placing second in Iowa, the Project for Excellence in Journalism found that John Edwards received a puny 7 percent of national media coverage. Clinton and Obama got between four and five times more; their poll numbers were nowhere close to that much higher than Edwards'.

"The media goes to this very engaging story about a legitimate woman candidate and a legitimate candidate with an African-American heritage, and that drives up their fund-raising numbers," Elizabeth Edwards told Time. "Then the media folks say, 'See, that proves we were right to focus on these two candidates'... It's enough to make you tear your hair out."

But there's more to the Edwards story (and non-stories) than reporters dazzled by Clinton and Obama—contenders who, though they don't seem likely to make political history, add a bit of demographic flavor. There is no precedent in memory of the news media freezing out a major presidential candidate to this extent.

The New York Times' own public editor conceded that his paper had shortchanged Edwards. "In Iowa ... John Edwards is close behind Clinton in the most recent Des Moines Register poll," Clark Hoyt wrote on Nov. 18, "yet The Times has given him comparatively scant coverage. Clinton and Obama have been profiled twice each on the front page since Labor Day, but Edwards not at all this year. Throughout the paper, The Times has published 47 articles about Clinton since Labor Day, only 18 about Edwards."

"I don't track our coverage by quantity," campaign editor Richard Stevenson responded. "In a qualitative sense, we've covered him pretty thoroughly, and there is more to come."

There wasn't.

What's really behind the media animus toward Edwards," Jeff Cohen wrote for AlterNet, "is his 'all-out courting of the liberal left-wing base' (ABC News) or his 'looking for some steam from the left' (CNN)."

When the media gets tough, read the overseas press. Kevin Drawbaugh, a reporter for Reuters, knows what's up. "Ask corporate lobbyists which presidential contender is most feared by their clients," he writes for the British wire service, "and the answer is almost always the same—Democrat John Edwards."

Drawbaugh quotes Greg Valliere, chief political strategist at the Stanford Group think tank: "My sense is that Obama would govern as a reasonably pragmatic Democrat ... I think Hillary is approachable. She knows where a lot of her funding has come from, to be blunt." Edwards, on the other hand, is "an anti-business populist" and "a trade protectionist" who "would be viewed as a threat to business," he said.

Stockholm Syndrome. This country collectively suffers from it, I fear.
Loyalty to a more powerful abuser — in spite of the danger that this loyalty puts the victim in — is common among victims of domestic abuse, battered partners and child abuse (dependent children). In many instances the victims choose to remain loyal to their abuser, and choose not to leave him or her, even when they are offered a safe placement in foster homes or safe houses. This unhealthy type of mental phenomenon is also known as Trauma-Bonding or Bonding-to-the-Perpetrator. This syndrome was described by psychoanalysts of the object relations theory school (see Fairbairn) as the phenomenon of psychological identification with the more powerful abuser. A variant of Stockholm Syndrome includes cases of abusive parents and abusive siblings in which the victim, even after entering adulthood, still justifies the family abuse.

I just got this information from someone who on a conferance call with the edwards, please note that these are the notes the person could take.

I just hung up from a conference call with supporters of the Edwards campaign. Both John and Elizabeth spoke.

Some of my notes:

Elizabeth Edwards introduced John:

"...I felt in 2004 that we left the campaign without leaving a mark... not this time... a lot of the policies on the table are the result of John..."

John Edwards:

"We were just and righteous and correct in what we tried to do for the country..."

Decision not about money, wants to unite the Party, believes McCain has the Rep nom locked up. "My withdrawal was not money driven... had nothing at all to do with money... it was based on my belief that continued battle was not going to serve our country well... when it's a two person race someone emerges quickly... it's very clear to me that McCain is the Republican nominee..."

"...I wish you could understand how hard this is inside of me..."

Poverty will be the issue on which Edwards will continue to push for concessions. "I have not endorsed anyone... I pressed them (Obama and Clinton in conversation in the last few days) on details of what they would do about poverty... we have very detailed commitments from both of them... both of them have given me their word to do certain things if elected, at the convention... "

No endorsement before Tuesday. "I will be meeting with each of them... there is no chance it will happen (any endorsement) before Tuesday, or even after... "

Take a breather and don't make any support decision yet. "I'm counseling you all to keep your powder dry... to take time, take a deep breath, don't be in a hurry (in choosing who to support)..."

"It's impossible to know what tomorrow holds..."

That's what I wrote down and I think it covers the key items discussed.
still not making any sense ... but it is a start.

I guess he wants to see who picks up his issues before he endorses anyone.

Comment by BobR on 01/30/2008 22:55:36
One thing Raine and I both noticed was his wording during his announcement. He said "I am suspending my campaign"... he did NOT say "I am dropping out of the race".

Does this mean he may jump back in? Is he not dropping out so he can continue to pick up delegates and use them for leverage later?

The timing of this is very weird...
