Stupid Season, again.
Author: Raine    Date: 06/02/2011 12:50:17

With a year and a half to go before the 2012 elections, we have officially entered stupid season. I think I am getting burnt out on stupid, be it Chris Christie using a state helicopter to show up at his child's baseball game, anything associated with Sarah Palin, Herman Cain, Rick Scott, Eric Cantor, Pawlenty, -- right now I just have little patience trying to talk of the stupidity of what is going on. I don't want to talk about them. I do anyway because I believe an informed people makes for a healthy government. I still care. We are in our fourth year here on this blog, with another few spent at our former home, it's been more than a half a decade that we've been doing this, and yes I still care. Sometimes, I just get tired.

What floors me most is the fact that so few people seem to care. So few people seem to be curious about what is being done to the middle and lower class in America. We try to educate here on this blog. There are many places on the internet that do the same. Sometimes it feels more like a fight against disinformation rather than for enlightenment.

How do we change apathy into engagement when we are seeing more and more radical candidates? Allen West seems radical, but he is but one of many fringe people in office right now. They are not just radical, but ill informed and dishonest. They show a callous, reckless disregard for people and the safety of Americans. They choose corporations over individuals. They don't care if people go to bed hungry.

These are the people who either want to run for office or seek higher positions in government. They are bullies and people who have disdain for the political process. They don't even seem to enjoy governing. They don't seem to care for constituents. Such attitudes doesn't engender activism or participation in a populace. Apathy breeds more apathy -- and that is dangerous for a Democratic Republic like ours. This is not what the founding father wanted for our nation. If they did, they would have created another monarchy that did not require or encourage the masses to participate in governing.

Like I said, I am feeling a bit burned out. I'm sure I'll get through this as I often do, but sometimes, I just need a break from stupid season. Is there a pill for that?

and
Raine

Rare storms struck this place.
Gusting winds, crashing thunder
Remember the dead.

We had a Midwest-style outbreak here. While Massachusetts gets one or two tornadoes per year on average, this was an "unusual event". The Globe has already posted a story by some 'expert' that denies a link to global climate change or any other weather patterns. It's not even 24 hours yet...jump the gun much?

For a visual reference, dial up a highway map of this Commonwealth...look out west, the block defined by the CT state line, I-91, I-90, and I-84 encloses where everything happened yesterday.

Then read this.

Would any of our NE representatives care to chime in?

I know they aren't common, but Tornadoes DO happen in NE and upstate NY. I lived only a few miles from the Bershire tornados in the Nineties, and was IN one in Saranac lake.

And then there was the Tornado in Atlanta a few years ago. Common? No -- but not unheard of. Besides, aren't situations like this precisely what the National Guard is for? I personally think a rapid response is a good thing, so am I missing something here?

Dealing With Republicans
by BooMan
Wed Jun 1st, 2011 at 04:06:25 PM EST

It doesn't matter what Jared Bernstein says. It doesn't matter what Paul Krugman says. Or the president. They aren't listening. They are not going to listen. They are going to crash the car into the ditch. And, you know, like it or not, we're all in the car.

Some of them believe their own bullshit about supply-side economics. Most of the rest are well-paid to pretend they believe it. A small remainder know better but are afraid to counter the party's position.

We can use all the statistics in the world, appeal to every historical parallel, bring out every expert, cite every non-partisan study, and it isn't going to matter. We will not convince them that their way lies destruction.

And there is no stopping them. When Reagan's tax cuts ballooned the deficit, they forgot it happened. When Poppy's tax hike fixed the problem, they were happy to see him go. The success of Bill Clinton's economic recovery act did not impress them. They learned nothing from Dubya's destruction of the global economy. They didn't change their beliefs or behavior after getting drubbed two straight times in 2006 and 2008. They just doubled-down on the obstruction and the propaganda and the poison, and repeated a now well-worn pattern of exploding the debt only to turn around and blame the Democrats and social programs for the deficit.

They can't be taught through reason nor through electoral defeat. They will not argue or negotiate in good faith. Science means nothing to them. College education is suspect and institutions of higher learning are teeming with un-American disloyalists, socialists, and atheists.

Minorities and gays are eating away at the fabric of our society. Food Stamps are consuming our entire budget. The Muslims are coming to impose Shariah Law.

Do you have a solution for dealing with these people? Because, I don't.

Boston Globe coverage

Lots of useful links and graphics on that page, too.

SPRINGFIELD — Tornadoes tore through Western and Central Massachusetts yesterday, killing at least four people, injuring an untold number, and reducing schools, churches, and homes to splinters along its destructive path.

Governor Deval Patrick declared a state of emergency throughout Massachusetts and ordered up to 1,000 troops from the National Guard to help with rescue efforts. He said at least 19 communities had reported damage and he asked officials in those towns and cities to close schools and keep nonemergency personnel home today to allow work crews to clear streets.

“We are in an emergency situation,’’ said the governor in a news conference at the state’s emergency management headquarters in Framingham. He said there had been reports of looting in Springfield, and he described the damage from the storm as extensive.

“We are hoping and praying and working as hard as possible to keep the fatalities limited to those four’’ already confirmed, he said.

Two of the deaths occurred in West Springfield, one in Springfield, and one in Brimfield, officials said. State Police said 33 people were injured in Springfield alone, including five seriously, in a storm that rapidly spread darkened skies across the state.

In Monson, residents described widespread damage that made the Central Massachusetts town look like it had been bombed. On some streets there appeared to be as many trees fallen as were still standing.

“There’s got to be 10 to 20 houses that are just completely gone,’’ said Heather M. Dickinson, 39, a resident who waited out the storm on her porch.

She said two churches in the small town had their steeples blown off and roofs had been torn off municipal buildings. She said the supermarket on Main Street was “wiped out’’ and several cars had been flipped over by the strong winds.

When the tornado came by, “it sounded like a . . . train coming in,’’ she said. She saw hail the size of golf balls. “We didn’t realize that it was a tornado until it was too late,’’ she said. “Everything is gone.’’

Destructive, deadly tornadoes are uncommon, but not unprecedented, in Massachusetts, and are typically the product of warm, moist air at the surface colliding with colder air aloft. The result can be explosive, as residents of Great Barrington can attest. In 1995, a Memorial Day twister killed three people hunkered down in their car.

One of the nation’s most lethal single tornadoes took aim at Worcester in 1953, killing 94.

Morning

At Chez Rabbit we mostly got rain and lots of lightning, in fact most of the 2nd period of last night's game was plagued with nasty pixellation and other digital garbage. The cats spent a lot of time under the bed.

Mostly I was just frazzled because I had to drive into Watertown to pick up Mrs. Rabbit at work. Traffic was much worse than usual. Left work in Burlington at 5, got home around 7:15.

I fished some obsolete lighting fixtures from our trash bin and I've strung them up on my desk and created a little light show.

Rumor has it that Sarah is bringing her Derp Parade to MA and NH today.

The local media got to show how absolutely worthless it is. From reports of "there has been widespread damage to buildings, trees and pedestrians" , to "Don't worry, you'll see the entire hockey game". It doesn't help that the local NBC affiliate probably is the worst of the 4 majors here and they probably had their 4th string news readers in studio.

Heard that the average is 2.5 tornadoes in MA per year. So we're way above average already.

Oh before I go, did you know having an informed electorate is a special interest? So says my penis of a governor Rick Scott. he used his line item veto to zero out state support of public broadcasting because it's a 'special interest!' I say he is the worst governor in America. he encourages his staff to use private, non-government email accounts to avoid the state's open government laws.

Mornin' all..

Just about 22 years ago we had a tornado incident in my hometown.. This thing literally touched down two blocks from where my mom worked at the time. The thing that I most remember was the sky - it got incredibly dark, then turned green and started hailing like crazy.

Comment by Raine on 06/02/2011 14:06:31
From think progress: (two items in the morning briefing tell a VERY big story in my opinion)

House Republicans “postponed a Wednesday vote on Rep. Dennis Kucinich’s resolution to end U.S. involvement in the bombing of Libya because they were afraid it would pass.” The House GOP will hold a meeting today to discuss the Demcratic congressman’s resolution and may decide to bring it up in the future for a vote.

Yesterday, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said President Obama did not “technicially” violate the War Powers Act by involving U.S. troops in Libya. Boehner said GOP leaders pulled a bill to withdraw the troops because “the House wasn’t ready to decide the question” and will meet today in a “closed-door meeting” on the issue.

Basically, and IMO, TECHNICALLY CONGRESS violated the war powers act by not doing thier job.

I think he was terribly surprised. Sometimes, Kurt, for all his confidence seems to not be very confidant that he can truly be loved by others.

He often seems surprised when his father and stepmother stands up for him.

Not only that, but their ignorance is showing. A brief search of two Qu'ran portals online yielded no results on the prohibition of entry into paradise if one is "contaminated" by swine. In fact, the only reference at all is the forgiveness of Allah if one is forced by necessity to eat of said swine.

In five locations in the Qu'ran, all worded the same:

[2.173] He has only forbidden you what dies of itself, and blood, and flesh of swine, and that over which any other (name) than (that of) Allah has been invoked; but whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring, nor exceeding the limit, no sin shall be upon him; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

However, polytheists, idolaters, and unbelievers *are* prevented from entering paradise, "for theirs shall be a painful chastisement."

One would hope that she might actually learn something today, but since the story notes they piled into two SUVs, that would seem highly unlikely.

She gets under my last nerves. What she did this weekend still has me pissed off.

She can't even get the name of the Statue of Liberty right. I want very much for the media to stop acting like she is a politician. She a reality personality. What she is doing now will at the very least be featured in Bristol's reality show.

She has no respect for our nations history. She's a media strumpet. She's not even worthy of being called a whore -- and before people get the panties in wad:
whore (hôr, hr)
n.
1. A prostitute.
2. A person considered sexually promiscuous.
3. A person considered as having compromised principles for personal gain.

intr.v. whored, whor·ing, whores
1. To associate or have sexual relations with prostitutes or a prostitute.
2. To accept payment in exchange for sexual relations.
3. To compromise one's principles for personal gain.
She never compromised anything that is worthy of making herself a whore.

She is without moral compass. She is a narcissist. And that is her right as a person, I just wish the media would stop pretending she is a viable politician. She is a propagandist.
