Mercenary Ideologists
Author: BobR    Date: 06/29/2011 11:12:49

I know I've written about this before, but perhaps it's time again. The Democrats in general (and President Obama in particular) are expected to take shots from the right-wing. That is all part of the job. What makes that job harder, though, is all the flak coming from the left. In particular, it's from the "Professional Left" who seem to have nothing better to do than inflame the emotions of liberals and progressives who wanted to see a quick turnaround from the 8 dark years of the Bush presidency.

I'd make the analogy that the ship has been slow to turn, but Obama was taking shots from the left within the first 3 months of his presidency, and it has not let up. One of his most vocal critics is Hillary Clinton supporter Jane Hamsher. She and her FireDogLake site (along with brother-in-arms Glenn Greenwald) have been harping non-stop since he's been elected.

She happens to be on my shit-list now because of her site's recent fact-challenged attack on AARP. All one needs to do is read AARP's own words on the matter, but how many of her readers will take the time and energy to do that? AARP has long been on the side of Medicare and Social Security, but the facts don't matter when she sets her sights on a target. Why the sudden interest in AARP? Perhaps because they won't take her advertising?

Is it really all about money with them? Are Jane's positions driven more by money than by beliefs? What are we to think of a "progressive" that takes money from Republicans, then works with Grover Norquist and trashes Democrats?

The end result is a cynical disillusioned liberal electorate that loses interest in campaigning for Democrats, and in some cases doesn't bother to show up and vote. The meme I hear from people who should know better is "Democrats and Republicans are all the same. They are both corporatists helping the rich".

Both the same?... Really?... Let's do a quick comparison, shall we?

Here are some of the things the Democrats have done since President Obama came into office (on both a national and state level):
  • Passed the Affordable Care (health care) Act
  • Repealled DADT
  • Used stimulus to keep the economy from cratering worse than it has
  • Ensured extended unemployment benefits remained in place
  • Ratified START treaty to reduce nuclear warheads
  • Got marriage equality passed in New York

Here are some of the things the Republicans have done recently (both national and state levels):
  • Pushed to kill the Affordable Care (health care) Act
  • Passed anti-gay marriage amendments in 30 states
  • Took steps to kill unions in several states
  • Tried to redefine rape
  • Pushed to defund Planned Parenthood
  • Pushing to kill Medicare and Medicaid

OH MY GAWD! - They ARE both EXACTLY THE SAME!!

Please...

The enemies of progressive and liberal politics are not Democrats who are not "progressive enough" - it is the Republicans. Any energy wasted on tearing down those on our side just strengthens the them. It is energy that can be better used to keep the horrible regressive "policy over practicallity" legislation of the right-wing zealots at bay.

The problem isn't Democrats who are trying to get whatever they can, and end up having to make deals. The problem is the Republicans, and the Professional Left that helps their cause by playing on the emotions of the left. Miranda at W.E.E. See You wrote a great piece on this topic yesterday:
There are too many Professional Dissatisfied Voices in the media and not enough real people. The self-identified progressives I see generally don’t represent real progress- meaning a real attempt to shift old social and political paradigms by finally solving problems instead of entertaining circular arguments. They represent retaliation and revenge for whatever they perceive to be the ills of the current political state. And that’s fine, but it’s not progress; it’s war. The war is for ideological superiority, not some actual, achievable goal.
[...]
the purpose of these mouthpieces and manufactured movement leaders is NOT to encourage progress, but to ensure the perpetuation of false dichotomies and time-wasting tug of war battles.

I encourage you to click over and read the entire thing.

The bottom line is that the "Professional Left" does not make money by being happy clappy Kum Ba Ya liberals. They make money by dashing off angry screeds that end up raising similar emotions in their readers. Their targets are whoever is in power, regardless of ideology. There may be some purists out there, but from what I've seen, they're mostly mercenaries.

Pass the salt.

I know exactly where that is - heard it was only a car fire though, no wonder it shut down 66. Try to stick to the less crazy roads - though they can get just as crazy some days

Amen, bobber Amen. It is especially interesting that the blog post from AARP addressing Hamsher is from 2009, April 11 actually. It was at that time the HCR bill was in a few house committees being debated, and crafted. By December she was actively working to get FDL members on board to assist in killing the Senate version of HCR. What does is t take to become an FDL member? A *friends* package is 45 bucks.

You will recall, I wrote about the professional left last August. This needs to be told over and over again, that their are people who say they are grassroots when they are simply not.

Then there is this -- and this -- and finally, this:
Nor does she pull the Overton Window left. Instead, she has become a divisive force within the Democratic coalition. Her ire is reserved only for Democrats at the center — and with the coordinated triangulation of such people as Grover Norquist, who wants to drown the government in a bathtub. She seems to get along with fringe right wingers very well; she endorsed Erick Erickson upon his hiring by CNN, calling him an “honest broker.”

Don;t even get me started on Arianna Huffington. I don;t mind pushback, what I don't like is being dishonest about it. That is a real problem to those who are really fighting for change. It divides us. -- As you said, that is only going to help the corporatists.

They actually believe what they say, that makes a big difference.

They don;t have PACs and they don;t pretend to be something they are not. There are a lot more people out there like them, Charlie Pierce is a good example. He often has opinions that I don;t agree with, but they are reasoned and well thought out.

Even KArl Frish -- who runs a COMPANY is a good example, he isn't pretending to be something he isn't.
They aren't leading the charge to provide misinformation.

Here is from WaPo Local, Contractors... It appears to be contractors.
A federal grand jury in Alexandria has been subpoenaing witnesses and records relating to the scandal at the nation’s most venerated military burial ground, sources said. The investigation, conducted by the FBI and the Army’s Criminal Investigation Command, has been underway for at least six months, according to sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

it was pretty easy, although I still need to work out the consistancy.

First I made the Tahini, Roast sesame seeds @350 until they look toasted and them mix it with some olive oil in a food processor. (you can make a bunch of this it lasts for a while in the fridge)

Then I roasted the Red pepper for about 50 miniutes (about 15 before, if you want toss some garlic in ) Let it cool, and peel the skin of the pepper and remove the seeds. Crush the garlic, slice the pepper and toss that and a can of chick peas and the tahini in a food processor. Add some salt and pepper and lemon juice to taste and your done! Vwa La!

Mmmm...wonder if it's worth a call to our erstwhile Senator's office to see if he knows anything more. (I've said it before; I have no reason to doubt Sen. Brown's sincerity on the Arlington issue...yet.)

Wednesday is still Prince Spaghetti Day around these parts...I've got baked ziti, garlic bread, and a nice California Red ready to go this evening. :-)

Interesting developments in the Kabul hotel-attack story this am.

BBC is reporting that a NATO helicopter was involved; they shot all the attackers when they got on the roof and started hosing the surrounding buildings. American media reported that the Intercon was the primary foreign hotel, but BBC says it was popular with locals and few foreigners were staying there.

The Martha-fest came because she's got a snobby attitude and women were driven mad to try and make everything perfect and Martha-esque. Martha won it back though by just sucking it up and doing her time instead of fighting it like so many of the wall street men did. I can respect her for that.

There was a place in Atlanta called the "Havana Sandwich Shop" that was an Atlanta institution for a number of years. It was run by some Castro-escaping expats, and they were phenomenal. Add some fried plantains, black bean soup and a creamy mango batida and it was heaven.

Sadly, the place burned down in 2008, but I hear they reopened in 2010 (after we moved).
