Avast, ye scurvy dogs! Let's be drinking our Orange Juice now!

It's also "Giles Corey" day, our longtime patron saint was pressed to death with large rocks on this date in 1692. Yeeouch.

Something interesting from the Palm Beach Post this morning....limiting class size has forced the district to hire more teachers.

Imagine that...smaller classes, better education, and more jobs. Who knew Florida was capable of such things?

And now heading into aviation geekery...

The trim tab caused the Reno crash? Really?

The trim tab is not a critical part of the aircraft....many planes fly without one, primarily older or instruction aircraft without an auto-pilot.

What the trim tab does is make minute adjustments in the elevator, primarily at cruise speeds, so the pilot doesn't have to have pressure on the control column to maintain level flight.

What may have happened though, is when the trim tab departed from the aircraft, it caused an unexpected control flutter, which at 50 feet and 500 knots, there was simply not the time or the maneuvering space to figure out what happened and recover in time.

Scoop, great choice! It is this sort of paradigm shifting thinking that really helps us come up with creative, out of the box solutions. :frothes as he continues with corporate speak:

The class size thing is one of the 80 bajillion amendments to the state constitution. Our crazy-assed, dick-headed (literally, his head looks like the glans of a penis) governor hates it. As does the snively lick-spittle GOP super-majority in the state assembly.

I'll have to read the Circus Fire account later....it's a "pet disaster" of mine. It's been creeping back into the public eye of late, but for a long time it was virtually unknown.

There's a couple of astonishing books out there about the disaster.

Adam West, frat brother of Poppa Mondo and incorigible poon hound when he was hanging out at the Sigma Chi chapter at Whitman College.

Comment by Raine on 09/19/2011 14:36:09

That was a very good read.

I loved this quote most of all:
The emotional trauma of public tragedies tend to wash over communities with a stunning force and then slowly dissipate with time, as memories grow dim. The most meaningful residue and the most enduring legacy of a preventable tragedy, therefore, can often be found in the law, a medium by which one generation can transmit its hard-won lessons to future generations.

and in the meantime, this is what the GOP is pushing:

The House approved a special interest bill today that would make it easier for corporations to ship jobs overseas in retaliation against American workers for exercising their fundamental labor rights.

The bill, dubbed the GOP’s Outsourcers’ Bill of Rights (H.R. 2587), would remove the only meaningful legal remedy available to workers if a company illegally moves operations or eliminates work because workers engage in protected activities like forming a union or collective bargaining.

Sit down before you read this one, then PLEASE pass it around to EVERYONE.

Rep. John Fleming (R-LA) appeared on MSNBC with Chris Jansing this morning to attack President Obama’s new deficit reduction plan, which includes some tax increases on the wealthy. Taking up the typical GOP talking point, Fleming said raising taxes on wealthy “job creators” is a terrible idea that kills jobs because many of these people are small business owners who pay taxes through personal income rates.

Fleming is himself a businesses owner, so Jansing asked, “If you have to pay more in taxes, you would get rid of some of those employees?” Fleming responded by saying that while his businesses made $6.3 million last year, after you “pay 500 employees, you pay rent, you pay equipment, and food,” his profits “a mere fraction of that” — “by the time I feed my family, I have maybe $400,000 left over.” Watch it:

I just double checked with Bobber on this on. After watching the video -- where he says he gets 600K 200 of which goes to feeding his family... So we subtracted 600K form the 6.3 million and divided it by 500.

WITHOUT counting the costs of rent, equipment and food -- that means he is paying those 500 people 11,400 a year.

IT would actually be significantly less. So he is probably lying.

or he is woefully underpaying his employees.

Considering at the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 his employees should be making (assuming if they work 40 hours a week) $15,070. So he is either running a sweatshop, or he doesn't have any full time employees.

Exactly.

Something is just wrong here. HE should not call himself a job creator if he creates part time jobs -- that don't pay a living wage.

I hate this kind of news. One thing I REALLY REALLY wish was that when HCR was put into place -- I wish we could have gotten rid of COBRA and required employers to carry Health insurance for 3 months after a termination.

What happened?

I gotta call her to get the specifics.. she says she made a HUGE mistake about three weeks ago (during the hurricane weekend?) and her management was PISSED. She says she apologized & pleaded with her manager to not term her but they did it anyways.

GDI she has medical issues too and they cancelled her insurance immediately. I really hope they don't deny her unemployment insurance..

Don't they have to provide COBRA by law?

That's nice Ralphie, you've made a new friend. You are totally irrelevent, so who cares what you think about Palin.

This is the guy who is looking to primary the President.

Did you see this from WaPo?

Liberal activists and academics displeased with the Obama administration’s handling of several issues popular with progressives say they are seeking candidates willing to mount a primary challenge against President Obama next year.

The group, led by consumer advocate Ralph Nader and scholar Cornel West, said it faults Obama for the escalation of military campaigns in Afghanistan and Pakistan, for extending tax cuts first enacted by George W. Bush and for his actions during the recent debt ceiling negotiations.

P's OS. Once again, Nader is trying to make himself relevant -- I despise him, I really do.

And to be honest -- I admired Cornell West for a long time, but he looks like that Crab in a pot.

I don't dispise Ralph, I pity him.

Yes they do. Even if you get fired, you're entitled to buy the insurance for 18 months. That's Kennedy's doing, one of the sub-categories of the HIPAA legislation.

It looks like the Red Sox are fighting back for round two.
