Black Friday - Stop the Insanity
Author: BobR    Date: 11/25/2011 14:11:44

The day after Thanksgiving has traditionally been a big shopping day, as it is the "official" start of the Christmas season. I remember as a young teenager with a paper route, I hated that day because it was the fattest paper of the year with all the sale ads. This is the day that all the big sales begin.

Supposedly, the term began to be used in the mid-60s in Philadelphia to describe the traffic snarls. It began to spread beyond Philly in the 70s. Even in the mid 80s it wasn't well known, although by that time the name was being attributed to retailers' bottom lines moving from the red into the black.

In recent years, the term could also describe the hearts of some shoppers (not to mention the executives that make descisions for the retailers). Stores initially began opening at 6:00 AM, then 5:00, then 4:00... This year, several large store chains opened at midnight. This means that low-paid workers had to abandon their families on Thanksgiving day to prepare for and get to work so that they could work through the middle of the night.

This applies to shoppers too, but they do so willingly. Perhaps it's partly a sign of the financial times, or perhaps it's greed or competitiveness, or the idea that saving $20 is worth several hours of inconvenience. It's often not worth it, unless you are one of the first in line, and buy only the deeply discounted item(s).

In recent years, the knowledge that retailers are gaming the public with "loss leaders" has resulted in a feeding frenzy leaving people injured and one even dead. This year, the violence became somewhat topical.

In California, apparently taking a cue from the over-zealous cops trying to break up Occupy protests, a woman pepper-sprayed others in the store. The police called it a "competitive shopping incident". That is a phrase that should not exist in the English language.

In Milford, CT, a fight broke out in a Wal-Mart shortly after the store opened. There are few details, but one can easily assume that it was between two people trying to get that last DVD player available at the "door buster" price. Although comically portrayed in the move Jingle All the Way, it's not really funny in real life.

As the day progresses, we will likely be hearing more tales from the front lines, as local stories trickle out to the national news feeds.

It's time for this to stop. This is within the hands of consumers to stop it. Many will say "I have to - I can save more money this way". Actually, you can save money by buying less. It's not necessary for every Christmas to be bigger than the last. It's not necessary to buy everyone you know a gift. It's not necessary to give your child everything they asked for and then some.

It would be better for the economy (and retailers) if people shopped all year long, and put items aside in anticipation of Christmas. It would be better for all of us if we eschewed big box retailers and shopped at locally-owned stores, buying products made in America (when possible). We can simply buy less and make up the difference with hand-made gifts. If I gave my sister the choice between a pair of gloves and a package of home-made pasta and a jar of home-made sauce, she would choose the latter.

Before the Black Friday stories get any blacker, it's time for Americans to set aside their "competitive" impulses, and not give into the hype. If a deal is good for only one day, and only for a limited number of items, then it's not a good deal. At least - not good for the country.

If was going to start a business outside of retailing and I showed up to a meeting with potential investors with a business plan that said I was going to make all of my profits in the last quarter of the year, I would be laughed out of the conference room.

Some snippets from this Commonwealth....

Mass still has a blue law on the books that states that most retail stores can't open before midnight on Thanksgiving. There was some pushback on that by the chains earlier in the month, but in the end they relented and most opened after the midnight hour.

But some found a way around the loophole; several stores had somebody on the clock and they were passing out numerical order "tickets" to folks standing in line and would be taking them back in order after the stores opened at a more normal hour. My own brother and his wife stood online for 5 hours at Best Buy (Danvers, MA) to get one such ticket; they left immediately after dinner yesterday to do so.

As for the Bean...since the Maine store is open 24/7, black Friday isn't that big a deal. The local sites (mine included) opened at a 'reasonable' hour of 6am today. We only had a couple of 'doorbusters' good through noon, but other than the early hour it's pretty much business as usual for my store.

I may rail against the Chick-fil-a chain for their rightwing stance, but at the same time I admire them sticking to their guns and closing on Sundays. If more companies did the same, maybe we wouldn't be so crazed around here.

Exactly!

I can't believe people were shot this year. Shot, tased, and pepper sprayed. Wjat the hell has our nation come to? I don't really mind that people use the day to get a jumpon shopping, but to use it as a business model is just a sick indicator of the times.

As an aside, I am so grateful we were able to attend the National Tree lighting ceremony last year. This was the tree last year:
http://ph.cdn.photos.upi.com/collection/upi/d9d34425c0df8143875b5e12d0286690/The-National-Christmas-Tree-Lighting-in-Wasghinton_1.jpg

They are still having a ceremony and concert this year, but the tree that is growing there now... It's is really miniscule:
The current National Christmas Tree replaces another Colorado blue spruce replanted on the Ellipse in 1978. Damaged by a wind storm in February 2011, the 1978 tree was replaced by the current tree the following month. The newest National Christmas Tree measures approximately 26 feet, 4 inches - and growing!

We walked past it a few weeks ago, and while it wonderful they replanted it, it just looks so small.

If there was a strong retail workers union I don't think this nonsense would be happening. Walmart opening last night at 10 was just unseemly. It shows a total lack of respect for what is the the most American of holidays as well as the workers.

I have to agree with you on Chickfiliat. Yeah they are owned by right wing Christian zealots, but they put a principle above profit.

Morning all. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

Medical report.....

It was a very weird Thanksgiving without Dad at home. We (my brothers and sister & family) had dinner at my younger brother's home, then we visited Dad. They are still working to get all the "numbers" under control, but were shooting to get him into rehab today. My brother brought some of his raviolis to Dad for a special treat. He's still in a lot of pain, and the extent of his activity is sitting in his chair for short periods.

Anne needs to get another cortisone shot in her back, it's up to the pain doc to decide when that happens. She can get around reasonably well with her cane, but standing for long periods is out of the question.

Pulled the remnants of Lucky's bandage off and it doesn't look as bad as I feared. Got some sticky gauze and made a new bandage for him. Naturally, he feels violated so he's off sulking somewhere (after he got a bunch of treats). Wait until I have to put the little sweater vest on him that my wife got.

To the subject at hand

I have never had any use for Black Friday, especially the standing in line for hours for a chance to get some cheap Chinese made crap (when it's quite possible that said crap is already spoken for). Now I have to worry about someone whipping out pepper spray (and from what I understand not getting arrested for it). Ugh

This is horrible.
CBS Affiliate WRAL reports officers had responded to a 911 call Monday night about a man who had fallen off his bicycle in the parking lot of a bank. The caller told dispatchers that the man appeared drunk and may have hurt himself.

When Police Officer John Turner arrived, he saw Roger Anthony pedaling along 10th Street and followed in his patrol car. Turner put on his sirens and lights and yelled for him to stop, but Anthony continued to ride away, police said.

Scotland Neck Police Chief Joe Williams said Turner saw Anthony take something out his pocket and put it into his mouth. Turner got out of the car and yelled for Anthony to stop. When Anthony didn't, the officer used a stun gun on him, causing him to fall off of his bike.

Anthony was transported to Pitt County Memorial Hospital, where he was declared brain dead, his sister Gladys Freeman said.

He was taken off of life support on Tuesday.

Freeman said her brother suffered from seizures and had trouble hearing.
Can someone PLEASE tell me why he needed to use a taser, considering the nature of the 911 call? it was a call made out of concern for a person.

A DEAF man.

Wal*Mart probably still made money on them.

Given the viral nature of the intertubes, if any of these animals tried to give these as a gift, the recipient would know it was only worth $2.

I'm not sure what sadder - that he was forced by his girlfriend to take her or that he feels that he would lose his job if they found out (not sure if its because of the seizure or that its because he went to see the sparkle ponys)

Ok, this isn't funny anymore.

A tired Target employee on her way home from working an early morning Black Friday shift lost control of her vehicle in Pahokee this morning, drove into a canal and nearly drowned.

The woman, who has not been identified, drove into the canal at 7:46 a.m. and called 911. She described to dispatchers her ordeal - her car was sinking into the muck and she could not swim, said Palm Beach County Sheriff's spokesman Teri Barbera.

Deputy Frank Mayo, also on his way home after working his shift, quickly got to the canal near the intersection of Muck City Road and Connors Highway.

He pulled off his gunbelt and jumped in. The desperate 36-year-old woman was clinging to the car which was sinking in water up to 20-foot deep.

She clutched Mayo, dragging him down into the water, he said this morning.

"If I drown, I can't help her," Mayo said.

Mayo pushed her away and came up for air, expecting to see the woman come up as well. When she didn't he searched the water, found her and grabbed hold.

"I reassured her that I wasn't going to leave her," he said. "I couild tell she was really panickly."

Two more deputes arrived and threw a rope into the water, and pulled the two out.

The woman was treated at Lakeside Medical Center in Belle Glade and released. She declined to speak with reporters.
