The Pendulum Swings
Author: BobR    Date: 02/29/2008 13:31:29

We went to our first Drinking Liberally last night and had a blast. There were some lively people there, discussing things both political and non-political. I got into a rather intense discussion with a fellow named Maurice we'd met previously and who was previously working on a senator's campaign, and is now working on the campaign of Rand Knight in an attempt to unseat Saxby Chambliss.

As I write this (and you read it) let me just say that a lot of this came from Maurice (quite the student of history), so I'd like to give credit to him in advance. To some extents, I am acting simply as a stenographer here...

There were two major memes to the discussion: political cycles and empires. Of empires, he pointed out that most nations that are older than us (Greece, Italy, England, France) have gone through the pain of the collapse of their empires, and their reticence towards violence and acceptance of a certain amount of socialism reflects that. The U.S. has not; thus it rejects socialism as interfering with growth motivation, and still embraces violence as means to an end. Micheal Moore's movie "Bowling for Columbine" asked the question "why are Americans so prone to gun violence?"; it seems our pre-collapse mindset might be the answer. We have not yet been humbled.

The other interesting aspect of the discussion revolved around Obama and the current political zeitgeist. He used the example that back in 1980, the country had just gone through the Equal Rights movement, the Women's Rights movement, and a social revolution that brought "accepted" drug use and rampant sexuality. The country - he asserts - was ready for a change, for the pendulum to swing from the left to the right, and Reagan was the right person at the right time to provide the promise of that change (and to some extent deliver it). Clinton gave us a slight reprieve in the middle of it, but it's been said (and repeated last night) that he was the best Republican president we've had in recent history.

So now it's been nearly 30 years of conservative rule, and the country is ready for the pendulum to swing back to the left. We've seen the results of conservative rule - disenfranchisement, greed, a heartless callousness to the poor, control through fear, and just general nastiness. Our collective spirit needs to be cleansed; we need to feel like we are helping each other rather than hoarding.

The time is now and Obama is the man for the time. His message of "change" and "hope" aren't just campaign slogans, they are the reflection of the desires and demands of the American people. Maurice feels that Obama is smart enough to recognize the swing of the pendulum, and know that he is the one that can actually make that change occur. If he could be transported back in time 8 years, it's unlikely that he would enjoy the same success because we weren't ready.

We are ready now. We are ready for change. We are ready for hope. We are ready for the swing of the pendulum.

Very nice blog post, BobR.

I must admit, when he first announced his candidacy I was sceptical and felt that Obama was jumping the gun. I didn't think this country on the whole was ready or even grown-up enough to accept an African American president - let alone a nominee for the presidency. I truly *wanted* to feel that we were, but my doubts pushed me the other way.

The lesson has been learned and I *am* ready for the hope that Barack Obama represents.

Now I just need a bumper sticker for my car.

Morning folks!

'twas a little quiet last night, so I'll post this again. I'm really, really, going to have to learn Maine history if this whole thing works out...

Comment by TriSec on 2/28/2008 9:12:42 PM

Evening, folks...a fine visit to the State House was had by all.

Some snippets...

There's a painting of Abraham Lincoln here in Doric Hall that's called the "$5 painting", because the image on the portrait was used for the $5 bill. (allegedly.) The resemblance is stunning, though.

We stood right inside the "front door" of the State House, which are used for only 3 ocassions...when a regimental flag returns to the Commonwealth, for a visiting head of state, or for the "Long Walk", when a retiring governor leaves his office for the last time.

Also in Doric Hall were a number of cannon captured on the high seas by the USS Constitution during the War of 1812, and one of the so-called "Concord Cannon" that were at the Old North Bridge in April of 1775.

We went upstairs to the Senate, which was not in session. In the chamber is an astonishing piece of history, Captain Parker's rifle. While it may not have fired the "shot heard round the world", it certainly answered in reply.

We also saw the "Holy Mackeral"...the current Senate Chamber used to be the House, and when the Representatives moved to another part of the building, they took the "Sacred Cod" with them...so the Senators commissioned another carving that now hangs over the chamber.

We went upstairs to the Governor's Office, and his Chief-of-Staff came out and promised to try to get us in. While we waited, we looked in the conference room next door. There's an interesting table in there, original to the State House, that's made up of 13 parts that correspond in size to the first 13 states. Pretty neat.

Unfortunately, the Governor couldn't see us, so we went on to the House chamber and the highlight of the tour. The House was in session today, but they let us on the floor in the middle of a roll-call vote. There was Sal DiMasi, defender of gay marriage, speaker of the house, within an arm's length of me. The chamber came to a halt as we were announced and recognized.

We trooped back out with the official state photographer for a photo with our Reps and Senator...then it was back to the Governor's office for another try. Unfortunately, his office was now sealed up tight, so we were unable to see him. We did admire the paintings of the former Governors...except Mitt. As the guard somewhat snarkily pointed out, "we don't have his portrait because he hasn't had time to sit for one yet."

There's certainly a ton of fascinating history here in my own backyard...I was really glad to have a chance to play 'tourist' in my own city. Not to mention it was a brilliant New England winter day, and we also had a pleasant walk across the Boston Common to where we parked the car...

Good morning everyone. :coffee2:

I also have had my feeling that this war is going to bankrupt the country. The occupation of Iraq is bringing this country down the same path the invasion of Afghanistan did to the USSR.

Both Keith Olbermann and I only caught a little of the Daily Show (I'll catch the AM repeat) both seem to have made the same observation as Raine has that Bush is coming across as someone not playing with a full deck. (with possible chmeically induced results).

Mornin' Everybody,

Today is the big PowWow here where I work - I wish you all could come and enjoy a traditional gathering with a free supper (Corn soup, fry bread, cobbler...). I likely won't around the blog much today - the PowWow kicks off around 3:00pm and will go until 11:00pm or so. Before the PowWow we are hosting a Native Pre-Law Day for students who are interested in Native law, so it will be a busy day...

Having a wee dram of Scotch before calling it a night...

How's the weather there tonight?

I guess that's the difference when you're an early bird and I'm the one who works the late shift.

Aww, fuck. The coppers just rolled down the street, apparently they've just declared a snow emergency. Gotta go move the car.

That's no fun. They don't do that in my neighborhood. They just give you a ticket if you leave your car out overnight. Or if you live on a dead end like I do, the plows just block you in.

Bah, if I see so much as one car on the street tomorrow morning, I'm calling it in.

They announced a ban last week too, but never towed. Couple that with the crappy (re:non-existant) enforcement of the parking policies in my apartment complex, and I had to park over a half-mile away in the overflow lot.

Bastids.

I wish they would enforce the traffic laws by-me. I see too many people making u-turns on double yellow lines or making turns into and out of stores even though there are signs forbidding those turns.
