Evening, folks...a fine visit to the State House was had by all.
Some snippets...
There's a painting of Abraham Lincoln here in Doric Hall that's called the "$5 painting", because the image on the portrait was used for the $5 bill. (allegedly.) The resemblance is stunning, though.
We stood right inside the "front door" of the State House, which are used for only 3 ocassions...when a regimental flag returns to the Commonwealth, for a visiting head of state, or for the "Long Walk", when a retiring governor leaves his office for the last time.
Also in Doric Hall were a number of cannon captured on the high seas by the USS Constitution during the War of 1812, and one of the so-called "Concord Cannon" that were at the Old North Bridge in April of 1775.
We went upstairs to the Senate, which was not in session. In the chamber is an astonishing piece of history, Captain Parker's rifle. While it may not have fired the "shot heard round the world", it certainly answered in reply.
We also saw the "Holy Mackeral"...the current Senate Chamber used to be the House, and when the Representatives moved to another part of the building, they took the "Sacred Cod" with them...so the Senators commissioned another carving that now hangs over the chamber.
We went upstairs to the Governor's Office, and his Chief-of-Staff came out and promised to try to get us in. While we waited, we looked in the conference room next door. There's an interesting table in there, original to the State House, that's made up of 13 parts that correspond in size to the first 13 states. Pretty neat.
Unfortunately, the Governor couldn't see us, so we went on to the House chamber and the highlight of the tour. The House was in session today, but they let us on the floor in the middle of a roll-call vote. There was Sal DiMasi, defender of gay marriage, speaker of the house, within an arm's length of me. The chamber came to a halt as we were announced and recognized.
We trooped back out with the official state photographer for a photo with our Reps and Senator...then it was back to the Governor's office for another try. Unfortunately, his office was now sealed up tight, so we were unable to see him. We did admire the paintings of the former Governors...except Mitt. As the guard somewhat snarkily pointed out, "we don't have his portrait because he hasn't had time to sit for one yet."
There's certainly a ton of fascinating history here in my own backyard...I was really glad to have a chance to play 'tourist' in my own city. Not to mention it was a brilliant New England winter day, and we also had a pleasant walk across the Boston Common to where we parked the car...

I also have had my feeling that this war is going to bankrupt the country. The occupation of Iraq is bringing this country down the same path the invasion of Afghanistan did to the USSR.

I thought they were moved to Syria like Sean Hannity says.

It was from an Infomercial review site. It said that it was a ripoff because the membership fee is so high and you don't really save that much money especially the extra shipping and handling charges they have for delivery.

I was going to cancel the Sunday Obama thing because my friends weren't able to come over on Wednesday to help me clean up / organize. Yesterday I had absolutely no one that had signed up.
I went to the website today to cancel and I've got a nearly full house!!!!!
What the hell am I going to do now?! I even skipped the conference call because I was going to take my name off the list as host?!!!!

As long as they have places to sit you can just explain that you just moved and hopefully they will understand.
Just as long as the bar is filled.

Yeah, but I haven't even been able to *get* my lovely bar yet!
:(
No one's been available so I can pick it up.

It sucks when no one's around to help out. Believe me I know.
Hopefully something will work out for you.

Actually my friends have been really helpful to me but I don't want to strain friendships. My upstairs neighbor had said he could help by borrowing a friend's truck but that friend has been in the hospital unexpectedly and I haven't been able to come up with a substitute idea.
